Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm getting pretty sick of seeing Doom/Quake games show up on everything from calculators to refrigerators too, but this port is a little special. It seems to support both multiplayer gaming and tilt controls. If it's not being faked, it looks like you move around by tilting your i Pod touch in different directions. Now that's pretty friggin' sweet.

It still doesn't look very intuitive to me..
So how would you strafe? Change weapons? etc? Tilt control is cool but it feels quite limited.
I think it looks really cool, but it seems like you can't look up or down since tilt forward/backward is used for running. I guess sidestep is out, too. Still, this is a cool idea and I'd love to give it a try!
Looks about as much fun as readjusting the rearview mirror, too.
@mahjustin:
dude its easy... tilting controls where you walk... everything else should need more keys, and a joystick to look around.
Could the iTouch be the next major handheld gaming console?
Film at 11
great - take a 3D game and make it completely 2.5D. Might as well have used Doom....
Nice idea however and multiplayer is cool
so if u want to run forward for a prolonged time u basically wont be able to see the screen as ur tiltin it away from you??
This is really, really cool. The implementation of the tilt controls seems really well done.
I like how everyone goes ga ga for things when they have a weird control scheme like tilting. "OOOOOO. You tilt and that hows you left!" Then you actually have to do that while playing and you become Stephen Hawking playing a Wii game. Tilt controls in an FPS are just asking for frustration. Was Lair fun? Ok then.
I was not aware that the iTouch HAD tilt sensors... Was I just missing that somewhere?
nice technical achievement, but the controls seems absolutely unplayable
Can you jump? Strafing could be bound to touching the edges of the screen...
@TalKeaton: Game Design Major: The iTouch is just an iPhone without the phone.
What's with everyone slagging off some guys little side-project? As it's obviously not an official ID thing, surely negative criticism is a bit harsh? Respect to the guy for pulling off a cool little idea.
@TalKeaton: Game Design Major:
Come on, Keep up with the times.. Non-Tilt is like so 90's...
@Agies: And without a bunch of the productivity software (unless you want to pay $20 for it), and the headphone jack moved to the bottom.
They'll probably implement strafing with finger sliding or something. The iPhone/Touch are multitouch capable so I'm sure it will be possible.
Still looks a bit fiddly though.
THIS PRODUCT IS NOT CALLED THE ITOUCH!!! It is called the iPod Touch. If this blog is supposed to be professional, at least get the names correct.
@Agies: OK, let me reiterate. I was not aware that the iPHONE had tilt capabilities, let alone the iTOUCH.
:) Better?
I hope people know that is it called the iPod Touch, and NOT the iTouch. Apple spends millions on brand awareness, people should at least get the name correct
Sounds like a big major f'ing headache to me.
I would like to see you rail anyone with pinpoint accuracy on that platform.
haha - furthermore - it just doesn't translate well when you have to go against other people --
the dead zone is going to need to be super small for it to work in such a fast pace game like Quake.
so - what have we learned today?
FPS [that aren't doom] + iPod/iPhone tilt = Suck.
I've forgotten how I thought Quake 3 was the ultimate in graphics that would never be surpassed. EVER.
Silly me.
@PapaBear434:
Yeah, I did the same with Sega Bass Fishing. What?
this man easily gets my respect. crappy controls or not, i'd put it on my ipod touch.
Unplayable.
It's an interesting concept, although one possible drawback is getting blinded by glare.
@BaseVilliN: Sure looks like it.
Like what everyone else is saying: neat idea, but one that has too many drawbacks to make any sort of legitimate insinuation that an iPod Touch could become any sort of portable gaming system. Still, amusing though.
This would work for Doom but not sure so much for Quake since you need to be able to look up and down etc.
It is not, and has never been, an "iTouch."
How hard is it to type five extra characters? It's an iPod Touch!
good concept, but who the hell want to play fps on a cell phone using tilt control to aim? it got absolute no accuracy to speak of.
@TruPhan:
The iPhone/iPod touch can become just as much of a gaming system as the DS, it just needs the right games, and they will come. I mean EA wouldn't be developing Spore for the damn thing if they didn't think it was a viable game system.
As for bashing the controls of Quake 3, think of this as a proof of concept or prototype. Sure you couldn't play Quake 3 against others who are using a mouse/keyboard, but what if someone develops one exclusively for the iPhone/iPod touch platform so the playing field is leveled? It's not hard to see this tilt control being feasible with a bit of work. It has the potential to be far more accurate than a d-pad or even the PSPs analog stick.
Shenanigans!
its not an iTouch, its not an iPod Touch, its not a Touch, its an iPod touch. Get it right.

@jeffg:
You mean 4 extra characters.
@OmegaKulu:
Really? You know this how? The accelerometer built into the iPod touch and iPhone is very accurate from my experience. It's just a matter of good software to take advantage of it.
@BaseVilliN:
I'd like to see how well you play any shooter as two players at the same time using one game controller in each hand. My guess is if he were only trying to play on one iPod touch, he'd do much better.
People don't do this stuff with the intention of actually making it a playable game. They do it just to see if they can.
I want to see him rocket jump! And plasma climb. And grenade jump.
@Doomstalk: Annnnd wrong! Jailbreak your itouch and you have acess to everything the iphone has..except the phone of course.
Old news is old.
For this I shall have to put on my skepticals. I'm thinking if you're tilting the screen you won't be able to watch it properly, but obviously I'd have to try it before passing any real judgement.
@madgunde:
Ermm EA make games for the Mac and the Mac as a gaming system is laughable tbh. EA are just going where the money is, nothing more, nothing less.
It's pretty nice seeing them port it with the tilt controls... however I doubt people will want to go through the learning curve to play it at all. They should instead, get Quake II working... then we'll talk.
@TalKeaton: Game Design Major:
Yeah, you know you can turn the iPhone on its side while browsing the web or viewing pictures, and it automatically switches to landscape mode and back? That's done through an accelerometer, just like in the Wii Remote. Apple only used it for that one purpose, but game developers can go crazy with it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks like Quake 1, not 3. I would imagine 1 would be easier to port because it didn't have the built-in wasd+mouse functionality as it was too early for FPSs at that point.
iPOD Touch. Say it with me people, iPOD Touch. Not iTouch, that just sounds like you want to molest kids. Ipod Touch.
okay, it looks cool and i applaud the creator(s)
@madgunde:"It has the potential to be far more accurate than a d-pad or even the PSPs analog stick."
this, however, i totally disagree with.
yeah, the wii-mote has such potential with its pointer.
the pointer, however, is dependent upon the "sensor bar."
as you may already know, all said bar does is spray infrared light;
but what it achieves is a reference for the wii-mote's sensor
so that it can create an aiming-accurate pointer on screen.
That control looks awkwered and horribly limited.
I remain unimpressed.
That looks so annoying.
Its not like i can accurately tilt my Ipod to an exact degree to get an accurate shot in the heat of combat.
