Good morning, campers. Thought we'd start the day off with some screenshot candy and a pointer to the first look at Gauntlet for the Nintendo DS. IGN's got the goods on the classic cooperative dungeon crawler, which introduced "Warrior ... is about to die!" into our inside-joke lexicon back in 1985.
Obviously, Gauntlet's addictive gameplay remains the same as the coin-op and its spinoffs, with upgraded enemies and AI. Graphics naturally are state of the art for the DS. But the real two-dot-oh for this Gauntlet, IGN reports, will be in the multiplayer, will full Wi-Fi support for linking up to three mates and the ability to talk to them over a mike. Everybody, all together now, "Elf needs food!"

very cool! this would be very cool for transit to and fro!
"Warrior ... is about to die!"
The wife still has no idea what I'm talking about when I say that. Heathen that she is.
warrior is about to die!
Holy Jebus did I hate that.. "Red Warrior is about to die!" then that beeping as my health/time counted down, right before being molested by 50 ghosts. :(
Fun times though. :3
lol someone else in this world uses that phrase! yehaw
Gauntlet was good for co-op as an arcade classic. But playing on the DS doesn't sound so fun, specially considering that there are other better co-op alternatives.
What a Great Game!
I can't wait to get together with my friends I used to go to the arcade with to play gauntlet!
Motherf'in Elf shot the food.
Blue Valkyrie needs food BADLY
@Fyren:
HA!
::hugs Owen:: Horray = )
now i can kill time with gauntlet with friends = ).
Gauntlet's always great, even single player is good for just level munching (similar people enjoy level crunching too :P ), don't normally like classic incarnations, but this one sounds excellent :D
YES! beautiful. I'm a huge fan of anything Gauntlet and Gauntlet-like.
must buy, day 1.
Maybe I'll get this for me and my girlfriend ... Gauntlet was always fun. It'll be neat to see what they did in this update. Some of the other attempts to update it were, umm ... less than successful.
Warrior is lonely
Warrior wants friends
Warrior gets friend codes
Warrior takes time to insert friend code.
Warrior is ambushed by monsters
Warrior ... is about to die!
Warrior dies.
Wizard needs food, BADLY!
and
Wizard is about to die!
oh, Five Iron Frenzy, thank you for reminding us of great quotes in gaming history.
what's with all the DS rougelikes? first shiren, now this?
It's of the same ilk, but did anyone here have as much fun as I did with Get Medieval? I'd like that brought back in some form, if we're going down the Gauntlet road.
Give the DS Gauntlet and Get Medieval for PSP.

+ Watch video
- Get Medieval...what Monolith did in their spare time on the road to becoming a FPS powerhouse.
Is it just me, or do the characters look too big? Part of the fun of Gauntlet is the amount of baddies on-screen, and this looks like you'll get about 20 baddies max at a time.
...but the online mic stuff sounds fantastic. All DS games should support online and chat.
Red Warrior Shot Food. Bwahahahah :D
I'm looking forward to this :D
Stress comes to the DS!
Fastest way to ruin a friendship: Steal a chest that your buddy opened with a key.
Campers? Jeez I've called that all weekend long in COD4.
The original Gountlet games were a pain in the ass difficult. Fun in the beginning but hard after about 30 minds. The makeover looks nice. Still, I'd rather see my online multiplayer remakes on a non-Nintendo console as Smash Bros has left a sour taste in my mouth.
Cooool!! Gauntlet woo!!
Oh sweetness, yes.
I wonder about this game's puzzle gameplay and RPG elements. Such potential!
I really hope it's as hard as Contra 4.
@remarK: i was just about to mention that song. but yeah, gauntlet from the arcades in the 80's is a big reason for me being a gamer, so outside of that abomination seven sorrows, its a series i follow, and will check this out.
My friend once came to the conclusion that the reason you're losing life when you stand still isn't hunger. You're aging.
Yes~! ONLINE-DUNGEON-CRAWLING-YES!!!
I was hoping for Wi-Fi multi on FFCC:ROF, looks like I can look forward to this instead then!
@ZinkO: The Game (the kind you just lost):
Don't forget the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, or Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja and its sequel... And there may be even more rougelikes on the DS I can't think of at the moment.
Oh crap it has deathmatch, TDM, and Treasure Horde, all playable online as well.
Sounds fun, but man, I wish Blizzard would port a version of Diablo II over to the DS! I'll definitely pick this up!
Not enough info yet, this game really crys out for dual analog control, and from the screenshots, is this going to be a vertical scroller now? Also missing (and from the 3D sequels ad nauseum) are the fun, bright cartoony graphics. Looks a little to "God of War" for it to truly be the Gauntlet sequel I'm hoping for.
@el_gordo: It's Gauntlet for God's sake.
What's that silly green meter - is that the health bar? Oh numbers where did you go?
Also, improved AI? How does "Spawn here, run directly for closest player" need improvement?
Hell yes. Do want.
Wizard needs food badly :>
4-player over Nintendo WFC?!?! DO WANT!
Use keys to open doors and chests!
Use magic to defeat Death!
Welcome back mauve valkyrie!
WARRIOR SHOT DA FOOD!
They better not mess this one up, Im definetly interested.
Wifi multiplayer and Voice over IP! I can't wait to check this one out.
I got sick of this game way back in 1993. Why the hell is it still relevant? Oh wait it's not...that's why it's on the DS...
Ah the 80s. "Warrior is looking up Wizard's skirt" always got a laugh at my arcade. Thank god the 80s are over.
@Tietsu:
It's more relevant than your arrogant and ignorant over generalizations.
@Tietsu:
Oh you...
@j13:
Agreed.
I can't wait, I was hoping the new crystal chronicles would have full wifi but when I found out it did not I took it off my list of must haves. This looks like an apt replacement.
@jayntampa:
Yeah, I'll play this with you, babe. :-)
@Tietsu:
just cos you've got an N-Gage...
