Five World Records Up For Grabs in Brooklyn

screenshot3.jpgAh, the Guinness Book of World Records. In the 1980s game craze, I remember they started accepting video game submissions, so I rolled the score on Defender on the Atari 2600 (1 million points), snapped a photo and sent it in, either to Guinness or somewhere else. No one called, no one wrote. Glory delayed is glory denied.

Perhaps no longer. You can grab an official record this coming Thursday if you live in, or can get to, Brooklyn, N.Y. — and have mad skills in one of five classic arcade games. Guinness World Records is hosting a competition to coincide with the release of its inagural Gamers' Edition.

The five titles up for grabs:

• Fastest Time to Beat Five Boards on Ms. Pac Man
• Fastest Time to Beat Five Boards on Tapper
• Highest Out-Run Score
• Highest Ghosts 'n Goblins Score
• Highest Donkey Kong Score Without Using the Hammer

I like how the records are some feat within the play of the regular game — except for Ghosts 'n Goblins, which is so goddamn impossible that just getting the all time highest score is badass enough. Arcade-History.com says the record is 811,000 points. Good luck with that.

A news release advises that "the public at large is invited to try their hand at the joystick of destiny," provided you're 21 or over and have an ID. (Barcade is, well, a bar.) The event is 7:30 pm Thursday, April 10, and the location is 388 Union Ave., Brooklyn, NY.

  • 811,000 in Ghosts N' Goblins? Holy christ.

  • hey, i like owen already. keep up the good work!

  • Ghost 'n Goblins should be THE world record.
Seriously that's like the hardest game ever.

  • Way to start off the new job. But g'damn 811,000. Thanx, now i have to go and top that. I love challenges!!! That is a feature film in the making.

  • Is Guiness still getting their game records through Twin Galaxies? Is this just some special one time arrangement?

  • i like how they thrown in the whole no hammer trick

  • Ghost and Goblins that high!! damn i remember playing it on the genesis and playing and pausing the game for 3 days just to beat it, but the damn wizard at the end is a bitch!!

  • I'll be there next Thursday. Guinness World Records is a nice bonus being there, but I'll probably be to plastered to care.

  • Ghost and Goblins was designed by satan to crush my soul.

  • 811,000 points on Ghost and Goblins earns you the title of "The Man". That score is insane. I don't even think that I broke more than 100,000, or was it 10,000? Either way, that game still kicks my ass to this day.

  • "you are invited to try your hands on the joystick of destiny,"

what a great pick up line... 60% of the time, it works everytime.

  • nice, joystick of destiny here I come!

I'll pass on Ghosts and Goblins though, that game just gets me really pissed off :)

  • Out-run? oh hell yeah.

  • @Thorax: ...and mine's
can't remember how many times i go killed

  • Who still calls levels "boards" anymore? Last time I heard that term legitimately used was around 1993 or so.

  • I could barely get past the second level in Ghosts and Goblins that game makes me its bitch to this very day, can't wait to see if someone can beat 811,000

  • @Makidian: I dont know if anyone with the ability to score that many points would be able to make it.... They've worked themselves into some ungodly 24/7 practice schedule, or they're a robot and therefore disqualified...

  • I didn't even know breaking 200k was possible in GnG.

Beating that game was a marathon in itself.

  • I feel sorry for anyone that plays Ghosts n Goblins. :(

  • After seeing King of Kong, I have to say... someone needs to beat Kuh's score on DK without the hammer. He's Billy Mitchell's little bitch and he needs to go.

  • @Touy:

agreed. he was such a little weasel, especially when Wiebe is playing at Funspot.

  • Original Ghosts and Goblins?

It would be easier to steal a 3/4 lb. extra bacon cheeseburger from Rush Limbaugh during one of his many binges than to get that score!!!!!

Side note: if you liked G&G try Maximo.

Its based on the same game and is 3D. Its very fun and though not insanely difficult, it is still a fun game.

  • @Touy: Hah, that's one of the first thing I thought of.

At first I was like "Get King of Kong players to Brooklyn." But then, I doubt Mitchell or Wiebe could do it, they're probably so used to playing the game (Donkey Kong) with the hammer that it's like programmed into their brains to get it.

  • The SNES outing of Super Ghoul'n'Ghost wasnt easy either... but the original, indeed, what a nightmare.

I've seen "The king of Kong" and I reckon that neither Steve or Billy are human. And without the Hammer!?

    THIS IS BLASPHEMY!!!
    THIS IS MADNESS!!!
    THIS.. IS... OWEN!

  • As long as Twin Galaxies isn't involved this should be pretty legit.

  • i saw king of kong too. it was really interesting to me, but the thing i really took away from it was that i don't give a damn about anyone's high score unless i know them. thank you xbox live friends leader-boards.

  • @JohnnyChance:
not only that he's his little sidekick snitch that shitter, wiebe was the true master. billy was just full of himself thinking his so called "godly videotape" owned all.
Addtionally, he didnt even have the courage to face weibe in that one scene with his wife saying that he shouldn't spend as much time with certain people. such bullshit. he should have manned up & taken the challange. I'm glad weibe kicked his ass, he deserved it.

  • I used to do half decent in G&G, but trying it now makes me curl up into a ball and cry before I even finish the first level.

Just goes to show you how ungodly easy games are now, compared to back in the day.

  • According to TwinGalaxies, the GnG high score is 1'000'100 and Steve Donaldson is in second place with 811'000...

There's apparently a new tournament mode with no scores submitted yet.

Maybe Steve Donaldson is the Steve Wiebe of GnG. Time for a new documentary :) ?

(PS: Donkey Kong is for Juniors) '

Kidding aside, I don't know how the old scores are possible given the time limits in each stage. I would LOVE to see these runs.

Also check out the GnG NES speed run

PS: Yes, this game has been tormenting my soul for years. I have yet to beat the arcade version. Stuck in level 5 or 6 for now.

  • @cherrybomb:

yeah, unfortunately Billy has the record again. This time the game he played was in front of a Twin Galaxies judge, but not at a live event like Wiebe. Wiebe still holds the record for highest public score. Now all DK scores over 1 mil points must have a TG judge present to be valid.

Twin Galaxies did seem like an "old boys club", reluctant to accept new people into their inner circle at first. They seemed to come around towards the end of the film when they realised Wiebe was legit, and a really nice guy. I love how they sent him the letter apologizes for their behavior, and then the interview with Billy and I think his name was Steve (Billy's other buddy). The two are in a booth at Billy's restaurant, and Steve is talking about how nice Wiebe is, and basically implies that he should hold the record because the way he did it was legit. You can just see the rage behind Billy's eyes.

Of course, Twin Galaxies and Billy Mitchell both claim that the film did not accuratley represent some of the things that occured, but when you come off like such a scum bag, of course you are going to have problems! I'm sure what we saw wasn't 100% what happened, but people's personalities speak for themselves.

  • I played ghost n goblins arcade for an LP a while ago, but god damn that game is evil. When i played it through, using a TON of savestates i got a score of 377.900. Getting a score in the millions, without savestates, thats near impossible.

  • @Darkest Daze:

Thats the thing with current games. Looks but not too hard. I mean true hack and slash games were almost unbeatable. Now they jsut look good while you go threw the game.

  • @Captain_Duck. Thanks for posting this live comment. I think Ghost and Goblins arcade machines should come with a warning label:

' Warning: It says made by Capcom, but this game was probably devised by Satan himself'

I really wonder who was able to finish this game 20 years ago in an arcade: No Wikipedia, no instructions videos and online FAQs, no emulators and save states !?

Imagine beating the game with the wrong weapon, being sent back to Level 4 and finally getting the "This room is a trap..." message and back to Level 1 again.

Whoever gets a new world record on this game deserves a documentary movie on his own.

  • You want to see a real hard game? Try beating this game without dying let alone getting a high score.

This game makes GnG looks like a cake walk.

  • They need a title for longest level up run on these RPG's like Final Fantasy and such. I mean I remember playing FFVII for nearly 16 hours straight - buzzin off that Jolt Cola....

  • @this_will_be_fun:

    That doesn't makes sense.

It's quite pungent. It's a formidable scent. It stings the nostrils, in a good way. Yeah I gotta be honest with you, that smells like pure gasoline.

  • @Azure.. In my view, it's difficult to compare a modern manic shooter from Cave with a classic game like GnG:.

    1. Different genres (Manic Shooter/STG vs Jump and Run) requiring different skill sets

    2. Mushihimesama Futari was only released in Japan (and very expensive to obtain the board in the rest of the world) vs GnG that is easier to otain and play anywhere.

    3. Mushihimesama is only out for 1 year. Who knows how many will be able to beat it in 20 years looking back

I agree that almost all Cave shooting games are hard as hell, but it's not like there's a fair playing field to even get access to the original game outside of Japan.

  • You won't get records at Barcade. Most of their cabinets are sticky and worn from night after night of beer spillage and lots of wear and tear.

  • This article is a strange coincidence. I was playing GnG on Virtual Console last night. I quit after 9 tries, only making it so far as the tidal wave in the first level. :D I think the game needs an extended name. Ghosts N' Goblins: will kick your polygon-playing candy ass.

Anyone know if the PsP version is good?

  • A couple of us filthy Brits were at Barcade last weekend. Irrespective of this records night, anyone who loves their videogames should try to visit this fantastic bar. The 24 classic machines are all loved and well maintained, the range of beers is awesome and the punters bloody good company. If you want to spend a night somewhere that makes it feel like videogaming is the coolest thing in the world and that even 'normal' people do it - then Barcade is for you.

    Loved it!

As I say, we were there just a week ago and all the machines were top notch.

  • "You scored 50,000 points on Double Dragon!"
