Still don't like the design of the new characters
I'm still more of a fan of straight up 2-D sprites but I really do love the way they've managed to render all of these characters.
why does he look like he has a frying pan in his right hand....wait...that is a frying pan!
man, i think we found our new DAN.
@Captain Fury: Doesn't it look like the lucha libre is bow legged?
For some reason these new characters feel very out of place. Maybe I just have to get used to them or seeing them in action to shake that feeling.
So he's called "The Strong Guy"?
He has a frying pan because if you read the description of the the guy. He is a cook, which is just crazy. These guys do seem out of place but not more so then some of the guys in SF third strike i mean twelve was odd.
@Ashurahori: No he's called "The Strong" Theres no guy there.
I'd say it's more "The Strong One". I have to say, his name just sounds wrong in Spanish. Then again, Spanish isn't my first language, so maybe it doesn't sound wrong. But I think it does. Not wrong in a grammatically kind of way; just wrong as in stupid.
@Ashurahori: "The Strong One".
And what's up with that frying pan on his hand? lol, looks like it will be funny to use after all.
I have a question, it's semi-related to this. With this game or with SFII HD, let's say i'm playing online. If i have a widescreen TV and I am playing someone who has a standard TV. What happens when they do a jump off of the edge of the screen, like with Chun Li or Vega? Does it appear on my screen as if they are changing direction in mid-air? These are life's great unanswered questions..........
It's nice to see some more backgrounds, as well ... I won't be satisfied until Sakura is announced, though :D
El Fuerte vs. Dee Jay - Fry Pan vs. Maracas.
Book it.
doesn't virtua fighter 5 already have this character? He better have really corny lines too :) "Hot dog!"
@jayntampa: You uttered great words there...
Does every fighting game need to have a lucha character now?
Muy fuerte!
I so hope he has a move that uses his frying pan there. ;D
Is there a mexican in a fighting game that is not either a: a luchador or b: a bullfighter? (yes, I know bullfighting is Spanish, but Japan doesn't really)
Check out the mega huge chin on Zangief! Nice! It draws the eye away the bear wrestling scars.
@Schoolimangooli: I'm not your guy, friend...
@SAKY: away from*
I'd say capcom lost it's hardcore fighters to snk a long time ago. . . . .actually i've always played both but capcom is looking less and less interesting these days.
Mexican fighter...hmm...what next...vietnamese fisherman? he looks pretty funny. I guess that's SF style.
@MASOCHIST187: I would imagine that yeah, to YOU it would look like they jump off an invisible wall about 3 feet away from the edge... who knows.
I didn't know this game had an OFFICIAL announcement yet that it's even coming to consoles. My understanding was that everything we've seen of it so far is all the arcade version footage. IF and WHEN it is ported to a console will it look the same? Or are the specs on these arcade machines so beefy that the console versions will be downgraded?
@escopr: Hahaha. The only SNK game you *might* see at any notable fighting tournament is KoF '98. 3s, ST, and VF[5] dominate the scene. Heck, even games like Tekken, SC, GG and Smash Bros. (let alone Alpha 2/3 and CvS2) are more likely to show up than anything by SNK.
@MASOCHIST187: That question's already been answered for HDR: gameplay will not change for different screen modes. HDR uses "transparent" bars on the sides of the screen; you can see the background, but the actual edge of the gameplay area remains what it was in ST. SF4 will probably letterbox/zoom for 4:3 displays, but that's speculation.
I'd always considered Street Fighter to be more of a serious fighter. This just seems to be going the way of Guilty Gear or World Champions.
I like this guy more than any of the other new characters. I do prefer the SFIII style though, I guess I should give up on Ibuki, or Yun.
@emag:
The last MAJOR US Tourney had tournies for 98, RB2 and NGBC- admittedly small in the case of RB2 (very underrated game) but official. VF5, as much as I like the game, pales to NGBC in tourney attendance, at least in the Southeast US. (SNK tends to be most popular in the Southeast, and areas with large Mexican or Chinese populations in the US)
Personally, I'd rather they have used El Stingray instead (could have kept him mostly the same- since El Stingray had a Cannon Drill type move- to me that's a sign that Cammy is likely to appear at some point). Slam Masters/Muscle Bomber should have some representation in SF sometimes- throw in Gunloc or Scorpion if you have to.
I think we need to relax here- things will be fine. I like the design.
@ElMuerte:
World Champions? I've heard of World Heroes and Eternal Champions. Trust me, the design is a lot better then those two games.
What is he doing to Zangief? Sad!
Super pumped about this release... it'll be the reason why I go back to console for a bit...
I think he fits. SFII was basically a series of ethnic stereotypes crammed together. The spiritual Indian who practices yoga, the militaristic American, the bearlike Russian, the Chinese woman in the stereotypical getup, the effeminate Spaniard, the thuggish black boxer, etc.
More stereotypes! More! More!
@Carroceiro: I does not sound wrong. It sounds stupid!
"El Fuerte" is such a ridiculous name, even for a wrestler.
@FightingChance: Actually, bullfighting is a both a Portuguese and Spanish tradition (and is a few places in southern France too). They're both different, though. Spanish-style bullfighting is performed on foot, while Portuguese-style bullfighting is done on horse and we (I'm Portuguese) also have the extremely badass forcados. [en.wikipedia.org]

Plus, in Portugal, the killing of the bull in the arena has been outlawed (except in a town or two, which have been granted an "exception regime"), despite many people (at least, those who like bullfights) having the opinion that the bull should die in the arena.
Anyway, due to that, you'll find bullfighting in several Latin American countries and, yes, that includes Mexico.
@Hugoku: Yeah, that's what I said.
El fuerte = The strong
@Hugoku:
not at alll, is common, there are wrestlers in mexico named:
ultimo dragon
la parka
el exotico
huracan
el macho
and those are true wrestler names, just go to the arena mexico one sunday and you will see :P
...looks terrible.
oh I didn't realized before but it's "el fuerte" not of "strength" is el fuerte of "the fort" in spanish fuerte means fort too
@Han Daimond: He has a frying pan because they were going call him Nacho Libre but couldn't get the rights.
@Quilt:
agreed, they could do a better design of a mexican wrestlers :P but at least they didn't make a two meter blond mexican wrestler XD
The more I see of SF4 the less I like it. The new characters just seem too out of place for my taste, although with time I'm sure they will seem normal. I still can't get past the 3D aspect ether. This game should have been 2D, no question.
Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go hang with SNK and KoFXII. They know what I like.
@Gambare: I never said stupid names didn't exist. And I don't think "El Macho" will get far with that name. The rest are ok. At least they don't sound made up by someone who does not speak an inch of spanish (not even english!).
@Gambare: That's true, but it could be either. Unless you read somewhere that the character's name means "The Fort".
@Gambare: But i seriously doubt that they would go for "The Fort", that just doesn't make much sence since Fuerte as in fort is something that is not that used in mexican language (not that is never but not too much). I would bet whatever that they were going for the Strong One, makes much much more sense.
@FightingChance: T-Hawk from Street Fighter? Even thought he is a Native American his profile in the old SF games said that he is from Mexico.
did he send Zangief flying off of a crotch punch??
@valhum:
@emag: Wrong! There's no transparent bars in SF:HD. If you decide to play in widescreen mode, the game zooms in to fill the screen. The screen will occasionally pan up whenever a fighter jumps. The widescreen mode is optional, but expert ST players have said that they actually prefer to play the game in widescreen.
As for SF4, I'm assuming that the game will play with the black bars on top and bottom if played on a SDTV set since it is widescreen.
Its all cel-shaded.....hmmm.....HMMMM.....
I'm finally starting to get used to the new look.
Why couldn't he he be like 3 ft. tall? That's the mexico wrestling I like to see. Imagine an M. bison electric spin right through someones chest, coming out with intestines in his teeth. I guess that's more MK though. He could at least break some shins and get all the girls.
And you guys thought ABEL looked ridiculous...
Much as the character design is kinda dull, it looks like they can make this guy interesting through movement. Personality goes a long way.
I bet he will look fine in motion. As a Mexican, I don't find anything odd about his name. It's pretty simple, which is fine. Kind of like "Guile" as a name. <
