The gang at Polyphony Digital has been talking up—and failing to deliver—car damage in Gran Turismo for what seems like forever. We know it's coming someday, it's just that Kazunori Yamauchi told us it was coming with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue when we talked to him at Games Convention. Didn't happen, though.
According to an interview with IGN, it may still be en route, via a software update. And it may be coming as soon as this fall. We will, of course, believe it when we see it.

I hate to say this, but...
Yamauchi, screenshots or it ain't happening. We've heard this point brought up so many times by now that the only way anyone's going to believe it is if he actually shows it off, even if it's just on a concept car they invented for the game.
But, but...the cars are so purty. -_-
Fall? Are you shitting me? That is AGES away. And what about private races and voicechat? That is more important to me.
I mean, I love the game. But I can't play it with my (real life) friends who bought it basically for that purpose including PS3, online? Are you for real? Goddamn, PSN.

@Candlejack:
Your other option is to wait for GT5 to be released, or you know, they never add damage ever.
Fall may be far away, but it's closer than anyone expected. In fact, people weren't expecting it for prologue at all, and maybe not even in the full release of 5.
@ceilingfanboy:
That's pretty much my feelings about this.
Why is everybody so upset about what amounts to a demo version? You know what is included and what isn't.
I know it's $40. Don't buy it. If nobody bought these GT Prologues, then they'd probably stop charging such an outrageous price.
I admit, it is a decent amount of content. But it's 2/3 the price of the full game. And if there's so much work to be done to get to the final version then, to me, it seems to be overpriced.
@AverageJoes:
How about this reasoning:: 2/3rd's of a game for 2/3rd of the price? (Plus the Blu-ray documentary)
FUCK YES. FUCK YES!!!!!
That would be all.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: I pick thee, GT5!!!
@AverageJoes:
Thats kind of a negative... and silly way of looking at it. Picture all these big hit games coming out, of which we all wait months and months for with expected delays. I know i for one would of loved to be able to get my hands on a taste of GTA a year or so ago.
But thats besides the point. The game has more content then a lot of full racing games out there. There is plenty to do. 16 player MP is a blast with or without damage and there is more free stuff on the way. Nobody is making you buy it, but i tell you what, i payed twice the amount for games like Hellgate London & Splinter Cell Chaos theory, and didn't get half the satisfaction i do from this game.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Ok. That's fine. But that would mean the game would have 9 tracks and 105 cars or so. Was it that hard to read that I said it was overpriced and didn't really have 2/3 the content of the final product?
I mean what the fuck are you trying to say?
5 iterations of the game and they still don't have what Forza 1 on the original Xbox had. Wow.
@ryivanV2: How is it silly? Everybody is complaining aboot damage and not having this or that. It's a demo, an unfinished version. but these people are acting like it's a finished product. It's not. So to complain about a voluntary demo that you're paying a lot for is silly to me.
Not seeing why people are moaning at prologue you'll get more hours of entertainment out of this demo than you will out of all the other shooter you've bought this year.
@jynxce: What? Crap gameplay & a small fanbase?
My apologies AverageJoes, didn't know quite what you were getting at. Besides, most of the people who complain about the lack of damage are people who don't even own the game. Or a PS3..
I don't want damage, I always crash and end up having to reset my car which wastes precious time. I want speed, speed and speed.
By the way, I got this game for £18. How can you NOT buy it at that price?
I have no idea why but the UK got the best deal on this game. It was 40€ in Germany and appears to be a ripoff in the US as well.
Call me when the FULL game is released, then we'll talk.
@jynxce: You're kinda late to the party. This is thread about damage coming, not the announcement that Gran Turismo doesn't have half-assed damage like Forza.
who wants to bet we will not see a damage dlc anytime soon, or better yet, AT ALL for gt5p
@ryivanV2: I understand AAA games cost a lot. I personnally, am on the fence. I know more content will be added. But I am put off by the grinding required to unlock cars, etc.
I'd like to contribute to their funds for developing, but at the same time, it's $40. If it were say $20 or even $30, I'd have an easier time. Especially since, being a demo, they can add and SUBTRACT at will and I'd have no recourse.
Plus, from what i hear, the old AI problems and the aforementioned race "grinding" to unlock cars are still there. the worst part from what i've read is that you really need to grind for at least 8 hours before you can get a decent car to take online and then you have no way of choosing race options. It kind of sounds to me like Mario Kart DS all over again, which is a bummer.
@ryivanV2: As a matter of fact, I love the GT series. I had most of them on my PS2 like most racing enthusiasts. I'm not going to bite my tongue because they're severely lacking in updating their franchise with little more than they had in the earlier revisions.
Plus, I'm talking about the game, not the console. Try not to become so attached emotionally to your console of choice and bring the system when it's not even about that...
That seals the fate of the full game to be released NEXT year. Damnit. I do agree with the Forza comment above. I wish I could have gran turismo's graphics with the tuning modifications blended with Forzas damage and paint and body customization.
@AverageJoes: You are spot on there (with the last paragraph, don't care too much about the rest to be frank). It took me forever to get the F430 only so I have the *possibility* to beat Class A or Series A whatever it's called. And I can't even do that cause I either suck or it's usual to be unable to overtake 15 supercars in one tiny lap.
At any rate, you can only race in beginner's class online (with any car type luckily) until you beat all the singleplayer races. You can't even take on Time Trial before. You are castrated to 2 tracks (off the top of my head) in multiplayer.
@Sollus: I appreciate that you actually got what I was stating.
I don't give a rat's ass what console the game is on, as long as the devs are doing their best to outdo their closest competitors. For GT, it is Forza and I want to see them push past what they accomplished.
See, competition is good for the gamer when you're not emotionally attached to your console or EA...
@jynxce: forza fucking sucked. fact.
@Sollus: I would say GT's graphics + physics + tuning mods + total number of cars + number of cars on track + interior view with damage better than Forza and its paint and body customization.
@jynxce: I am almost convinced that you are insinuating that GT has to catch up with Forza in terms of improvement and it's not the other way around.
Can we stop with the half finished PS3 games being released? If the game isn't ready, why not wait and release when it is and disappoint fewer people.
*goes and plays forza (1). ohh, last gen damage.
Seriously guys, they're both menu-based driving simulators with physics. What the hell is this massive gap between the two that keeps being alluded to but never defined?
@slomo788: Maybe you're right... then maybe it doesn't matter that what I say it's going to fall on def ears.
If there a feature missing that some gamers may question, correct it if your competition has implemented already.
Is that that difficult to follow or understand?
@jynxce: The question is not whether or not GT should have damage. I think no sane person can deny that. But Forza is not a model. If GT tries to follow Forza, the series is going backwards.
Man this game is SO gonna turn into Burnout Paradise now with damage + US online players. Hope people have enough manners and delicacies to create/stay in rooms if they wanna play bumper cars and see crashes, and not ruin the online game for everybody else.
geez, a bunch of people hating on GT5.
Damage or not, I look forward to the prologue. To the people who thinks the price is ridiculous, don't buy it then. People who are car enthusiast will buy it like it or not.
You know what's over price? Virtual Console games, yet people still buy them
@slomo788: Forza 2 has better damage simulation than any driving game I've ever played. And I've play a lot of driving games. (I fully admit that there's probably some ridiculously bad PC game that has better damage, but to call Forza's half-assed is...slander.)
@DoubleV: $5 too much to pay for a game? Yet more proof of the "average gamer is ridiculously cheap" theory I've come up with.
I can get a Big Mac Meal at McDonalds for $6. That's a dollar more than an NES game. Now, which one will give you more hours of enjoyment?
@dowingba: A ridiculously good (and superior) PC game actually. Called GTR 2.
@dowingba: The only things where GT is not crushing Forza are damage and AI. At least for damage, I expect an outstanding improvement, true to the series.
Even Forza 1 had damage and that was LAST GEN. For the real GT5 I hope they actually focus on realism in every sense of the word not just making cars look pretty. Cause I was actually planning on buying a ps3 for GT5(not the prologue bs) not if they aren't including damage though
@ca$h:
I just said what the gap is. The stupid game is claiming to be the most realistic racing simulator in the world but yet I can go in to corners slamming off opponents to make the turn easier or I slam a wall just to get no damage but a stupid 5 second delay. That's not realistic and I'd like to be able to modify my cars exterior as well thank you.
What will happen:
1. Download the patch.
2. Disable damage model.
@slomo788: There's another place that GT is not "crushing" Forza. It's in the entire presentation. (Granted, I don't know how GT5 is set up.) Forza is presented to you as a game. You level up and unlock new events, etc. GT is set up as if you're really living the boring life of some driver.
Here's where Forza shines: you can progress through the game as you would any other video game. And yet it still has all the gear-nerdy stuff that GT series has (only you can switch out and mod even more stuff). Also, I consider Forza to be more of a "simulation" whereas GT is clearly leaning toward the arcade-side, as far as actual driving is concerned. Not to mention, Forza's difficulty is fully customizable, which is freaking great.
In Grand Turismo 4, you can spend weeks racing the same events over and over because you haven't yet met one or more various arbitrary requirement to "advance" (not that you really "advance" in GT4...you mostly just...buy more stuff). I've probably put 30 hours or more into the license tests alone in that game. It's sickening really.
I love both games, but they each have their pros and cons, and they each fullfill different niches. Personally, I get alot more enjoyment out of Forza.
wait....1080P+60FPS,plus damage ....im gonna bet my ps3 will catch on fire from all this hd-car-damage-nougaty-goodness..
@Sollus:
I was asking the people claiming Forza was crap compared to GT without even slightly justifying their position, but your answer will do :)
@dowingba: Yamauchi already announced that GT5 will try to be more casual to minimize the frustration that the GT series has always had. But as far as simulating goes, GT wins. Forza may add a touch of realism with damage, but it's not sim-like. This is like comparing Call of Duty 4 with Resistance (or Halo 3, to not hurt anybody's feelings). Resistance has vehicles, and is better to introduce someone to the shooter style (very debatable, I know), but CoD4 is better in terms of realism.
I was under the impression that GT never had damage not because of technical limitations (as a lot of folks seem to be implying), but because the car manufacturers play hard ball with Sony when it comes to damaging their oh-so-pretty cars.
In any case: meh. I was never all that impressed with GT. Always struck me as a half-assed car rpg/spreadsheet simulator. I don't think any racing game can call itself "realistic" until it matches the brutally unforgiving model in Papyrus's decade-old Grand Prix Legends.
