Zounds! Based on the monstrous success of Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, the PSP reached impressive hardware sales heights this week in Japan. It came very close to outselling every other piece of hardware combined, with nearly 130,000 units, some of which were bundled with the latest Monster Hunter expansion. Here's how the hardware battle went down during March 24 to March 30.
- PSP - 129,986
- Nintendo DS - 58,916
- Wii - 48,785
- PlayStation 3 - 11,206
- PlayStation 2 - 10,296
- Xbox 360 - 1,547

Shit!
@slomo788: My thoughts exactly.
@Michael McWhertor: Lol Zounds!!!
Good God! The PSP's a monster.
By the way, I seriously want to meet the people who are still buying PS2's.
Crisis Core would be about 300 times less popular if the FF series wasn't tagged on to it. And I would have a better chance of getting it as I wouldn't think it's just exploiting FF7 fanboys.
Only 59,000 DS? This isn't Japan.
I wonder how big the sales would've been if Crisis Core and this came out on the same day.
Time to pack it up nintendo, you had a good run.
@uranutan: but...it wouldn't exist if it didn't have FF 'tagged' on to it....
Looks like everyone got owned this week.
Wow! I love my PSP even more now.
I hope the new PS store has more PSP content.
@TOWER_JUNKIE: I see what you did there... lol.
Congrats PSP, but sadly I'm not even slightly interested in both Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy. Sigh, that's OK though, because I got Jeanne.
@Kyle81:
Yeah... oh, wait.. Monster Hunter 3 is coming to which console again?
...
Thats right.. Wii.
Heh, good job PSP. Prove your just as strong as the popular handhelds before you and engrave your place in history.
Hmm, seems like the main consoles need some new software to pick up those units. They're all falling a little lower.
Wow, the PSP may have been late getting to the party, but it's totally wearing the lampshade now!
LOL @ the 360 sales. :p
Go, PSP, GO!
And go, handheld gaming, GO!
@uranutan: And you can't be serious when you say your perception of FF fanboys is what's stopping you from playing the game...I mean, bit of a limp reason. Why let that get in the way of you making up your own mind?
wow ... and i bought my psp this week but it was more for god of war . Im not really into final fantasy thing . I guess a lot of japenese bought the psp for final fantasy :)
Wyld: I can't wait to see what that'll do to the Wii's sales. The damn thing is flying off shelves right now I guess the Japanese are going to be going straight to Nintendo's factories to snatch a console.
And slowly the pie chart begins to form a big black pacman.
PSP: 360! I crush you with memory stick!
@excel_excel: I mean, if it were a game with a separate story and characters rather than a continuation of the overdone FF7.
@pylon_trooper: I don't have a PSP. This would be a good reason to finally get one, if the sales were because it's a really good game and not because it's a sequel to a well established franchise with millions of dedicated fans.
@TOWER_JUNKIE: Trust me, you don't.
@Kyle81:
PSP has a great week and it deserves it. But the DS is the best selling game system (handheld or console) in Japanese history. The game is already won.
It's as if its slowly devouring the competition...
Wow the PS3 did weak this...week. Yes.
My hat is off to the PSP though!
holy fnizzle
Damn, Monster Hunter may eventually get to Dragon Quest "only release it on a weekend so people actually show up to school and work" status.
Wow!
Ah, so that's what a metric fuckton of sales looks like...
@uranutan: You don't get millions of dedicated fans simply by releasing shoddy games. In any case, it's possibly the best action RPG out there, at least on a handheld. Are you saying all the reviewers are fanboys?
Monster Hunter for President!
-Niric
JEBUS!!!
@Kenology:
@Wyld:
You all can't be anymore dense could ya?
LOL at the 360 and PS3
Handhelds for the win
@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!: Don't worry. by the rate the Wii and DS has been selling I wouldn't be surprised if just about everyone in japan owns about 1 Wii and 4 DS's
I shudder to think what the pie will look like when Monster Hunter 3 comes out on Wii.
I think this has something to do with mixing a successful series with the whole Portable thing, like Kojima Jr. said. I don't think Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii will be as popular as it was on the PSP because it's not Portable.
@Kyle81:
Just a heads up, sarcasm on the internet doesn't work as well as you think.
In fact I am actually crying dramatically while typing this. I feel I have conveyed the emotion well.
@Acunia:
Not even a 1/10th of Japan has a DS yet actually :)
Honestly I believe Japan is oversaturated by DS's already, I mean there are 3 Ds's for each person in the world... and 5 copies on Brain age and Nintendogs attached to each one..
How long has it been since it has sold this many in one week?
Also, look at the 360 sales compared to the PSP sales. Just look at it
@subnet6:
Pacman with a multicolor mouth.
It looks like someone ate half of the pie.
@nintendog66:
Look above you. People really believe Japan is saturated with DS's. Again not even a tenth of the population of Japan own a DS yet. Since this hasn't gotten through to people yet, I will say it another way:
90% of Japan's population do not own a DS yet
Wow. Can we all start calling the PSP a success now?
@Hrist:
I'd say it's been a success for a while, even before the PSP Lite came out. It's just that the DS was an even bigger success. The PSP has worked out its own little niche, and the DS the same. I own both of them for a reason.
Sony should request Capcom to make a Monster Hunter for the PS3, forget MGS4 and FFXIII, Monster Hunter would be the savior!
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
You can say it any way you want, but it won't make it true. About 1/6 of Japan owns a DS. I don't know if that's saturation, but at that point, I'd expect sales to slow a little bit. Considering the DS is still selling 60 thousand a week, it's pretty amazing.
damn. that pie chart looks like if the psp section was eating up everyone else
@Hrist:
I don't know why anyone has called it a failure in the past year and a half. It's sold very well, especially considering it's competing against the DS, and Nintendo has dominated the handheld market since it's conception.
