Mario Kart Midnight Launch At Sam's Club

samslogo.jpg Looks like warehouse club chain Sam's Club had so much fun at their Super Smash Bros. Brawl midnight launch, they've decided to do another one, only this time for another game, because otherwise it would just be silly. Mario Kart Wii shall be the focus of this midnight launch, the second in Sam's Club history, with players and parents of players able to line up at stores across the country on April 26th to await the stroke of midnight and assuage their driving ambition. Don't have a Wii yet? A Sam's rep has informed us that every location will have at least 15 consoles on hand for the event, so you can kill two birds with one stone. The chain promises tons of copies on hand for the event, but you can always preorder at their web page, just in case. What they are trying to say here, is they want Sam's Club to be your video game store. Just don't try walking in without one of those membership cards, because their security will take you the f*** down.

Yeah we'll see! WE'LL SEE WHO TAKES WHO DOWN!
April 26th?? ohohoho I'll be glad to get this first bwahahaha! THIS IS FOR SMASH NOT HAVING A RELEASE DATE!!....not worth it though

  • Isn't Sam's Club owned by Wal-Mart?

Wouldn't surprise me if the big W was running something similar. Of course, a midnight party would be a little strange for a store that's open 24 hours a day, but you get the idea. Hopefully they'll have some Wii's on hand too...perhaps then I can actually buy one.

I wonder if we will get a midnight launch here in the UK, or a 'day-before' one like we did for Super Mario Galaxy?

  • Fuck, are they going to sell them in 15 game packs?

  • I can't imagine a game that would have me waiting up until midnight to get it. Am I the crazy one?

  • Image of Sparx Sparx at 07:15 PM on 04/03/08 *

So are they bypassing the membership card thing to let these people in or is it members only like always?

I needed an excuse to pick up another five gallon tub of mayonnaise.

  • For Mario Kart... Umm.. are they having games going inside or something..

@Islandkiwi: huh?? any huge game man! Smash Bros Brawl, GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, heck I'd wait after midnight no prob for them!

  • @excel_excel: That's what many people do. Wait after midnight, until daytime or so, to pick the game up.

  • @Islandkiwi: @excel_excel: The last game I went to a midnight launch for was Halo 2, and it was worth it. That game was pretty goddamn awesome. Way better than Halo 3, in my opinion. Halo 3 would be better if they remade all of the Halo 2 maps for it. Anyway, I'm definitely, absolutely, for sure going to a midnight launch for MGS 4.

Oh, and yeah, Please God let there be a midnight launch for MGS 4, and not none of the bullshit I had to go through to get a copy of Orange Box when that came out for 360... the local store didn't get it on release day so I had to go searching... it sucked. So hopefully MGS4 is going to get shipped early & street dated, or I'll have to wait until the end of the day to play it like I did with Orange Box.

  • Security will take you the f*** down?

    Fart? Funk? Flip?

Now I'll be up all night.

  • @TheEngineer: Hates the UE3: That's actually the funniest thing I have read all day. Just letting you know.

  • Comment on Mario Kart Midnight Launch At Sam's Club Well, if you want a Wii console from Sam's, you better get there really early. When I went to my local Sam's for SSBB, I was the only non-employee waiting to get in. Everyone else there were store employees waiting to buy a Wii with their employee discount, still in uniform, just sitting around inside the store after their shift ended. What's really sad, is that I had to explain to the Store Manager what the controller icons on the back of the SSBB game stood for, as well as explain what comes in the Wii console package. Talk about knowing the merchandise one sells.

  • @JaggedToaster:
    Ha, really? Thanks!

  • When I bought SSBB at the first midnight launch, they didn't ask for the card to enter the store, just when you checked out. And I didn't even have a card, I borrowed my friend's who is from South America and like a foot shorter than me. Even though the picture on the card is low quality, you can clearly tell it's not me.
But they didn't seem to care.

  • they used to let people in as a guest.
has all that stopped, because that would make them worthless.

  • Hey guys, long time reader, first time commenter here. I just signed up just now so I could share my thoughts with you guys for once, and hopefully do so in future articles. :)

You would think that a store in UK would've announced an upcoming Mario Kart Wii midnight launch party sooner than this, since the game's pretty much round the corner here... I guess the Mario Kart Grand Wii will have to do.

  • Riiiiight. Because who doesn't think Sam's Club when it comes to midnight video game launches?

  • @Cogito:
Walmart isn't doing any sort of "event" for it, but they'll probably still have the game at Midnight. I know, because I went to the midnight launch for Brawl at Sam's Club and then I went to Walmart right afterwards to get an SD card. They had a whole bunch of copies of Brawl. I'm sure it will be the same for Mario Kart, but it's cheaper to get it at Sam's Club if you're a member.

  • @Sparx: When I went to the midnight Brawl launch at Sam's they let customers purchase a membership at the same time they purchased their Wiis.

  • @excel_excel:

The only game I'd wait for at a midnight launch is Nina Gaiden II. On the subject of Mario Kart Wii I don't think it deserves a midnight launch because it doesn't have as much hype as Brawl.

  • I actually do alot of my video game purchasing at Sam's club, if I am going to buy the game at launch. The price is usually at least $5 off retail for any new games (mario kart is $44 as opposed to $49), and they usually have decent stock.

I picked up a copy of the PS3 version of COD4 there for $40 on launch day because someone had opened the plastic.

  • Costco has good prices on games on launch date.

Costco is also, ethically a much better corporation than WalMart/Sam's Club. [abcnews.go.com]

I have a strict vow to never let Wal-Mart get a dime of my hard earned money.

  • @suburbancowboy: Their business is crippled as a result, I'm sure.

Weird. Sams have night crews that are darting all over the stores with forklifts. You'd think there'd be some sort of conflict there. Y'know, forklifts and pedestrians.

  • @suburbancowboy: not only is there no costco here, i've never even seen one.
it's also not my job to monitor the ethics of huge corporations
in relation to their employees and employees of those who provide their product.
my only concern is how they treat me, and walmart has the best return policies ever.

however, i'd rather buy games from a game store.
therefore i tend to shop at play n trade.

@Fireblast: Nina Gaiden II?? God don't tell me there doing a crap Dead or Alive spin-off!
I kid, I kid! ahh well its your opinion but still I'd take Smash Bros releasing in europe this year early than having Mario Kart release at all!

  • Cool that's my birthday.

  • I doubt security will care. I waited in line all night at Sams Club the night the Wii first came out and they let me just buy the membership the same time I got the Wii (1 of only 6 they received that morning). Of course that wasn't a midnight launch so I was there til 10:30am.

@suburbancowboy: I've never seen a costco here in Iowa. And as a 3rd shifter for the last 4 years, I plan to keep supporting Wal*Mart for as long as they are the only place open all night to buy just about anything I need.

God bless the 24/7 business hours.

  • I worked at the Sam's Club 6242 Location on Night Crew for three years. I was the Hardlines forklift operator, and one of the best drivers of the stand-up, narrow-aisle forklifts you'll ever see! Being extremely farmiliar with their forklift procedures while "members" are in the club, I can assure you they will most likely drop (get down from the racks) all of their freight that they need to work on for the night at 9pm when they arrive, and cease all forklift operations while members are there. In regards to membership policies: At my club, they were quite strict. I remember at the XBOX360 launch, some kid wanted to buy one using his dad's membership card. My manager said his dad needed to be present in order to make the purchase, so the kid had to call his dad and have him come to the club. These people pitched a tent and had heaters and everything. We made fun of them on our cig/lunch breaks!
