Personal Story: I've been waiting over a year for my Japanese "Art Of Okami" book to ship. Don't think it's ever going to happen. In its place, though, I guess I can console myself with Okami Art, a nice little act of fan service put up by Capcom for lovers of all things art and Amaterasu. It amounts to having the gates to the game's press assets thrown open to the public, with some fan art and snazzy widescreen wallpapers tossed in for flavour. Seems simple, but serious fans lap this kinda stuff up. Classy move, Capcom.

Some really beautiful work. I have the official artbook in high-res scans and the amount of detail put into the seemingly simple brush-stokes is incredible.
I highly anticipate the release of Okami on the Wii - maybe strong sales will make them produce some sort of sequel.
@Kiriphii: That would be nice, but how good would it be with Clover studios gone and everybody moved to different projects? Okami is easily one of the best games of last-gen and a must buy for Wii owners, especilly if you liked Twilight Princess.
Okami on the next-gen systems would look amazing, but in a way I would be glad if this game was a one off classic without any shoddy sequels.
I'm really excited about the upcoming Wii version, still haven't played the PS2 one, I was in a bit of a money crunch when it came out, and by the time I got back to where I was buying games regularly again the Wii version was all but confirmed, so I figured I'd wait and give that money to Capcom when it releases, rather than giving GameStop 15 bucks or whatnot for a used PS2 version :)
Also agree that some games are best left without sequels, though determining which ones those are can be hard for even the most experienced gamer, let alone a bunch of "soulless" corporate types who actually make many of the decisions on what games get sequels or not based on profit potential and nothing else ;)
I agree with cubabit, Okami would be better off without any sequels.
Okami is art. We don't want to turn "art" into "tart" by creating rubbish sequels now, do we Mr. Lucas Arts? Yes, I'm talking about Monkey Island 4, Mr. George Lucas.
I really wish more companies would release their press assets (through fankits or whatever else) to the fans... Even most of their press vaults or gamespress don't have a lot of it, and those are out of the way methods. :/
Udon was supposed to release the Okami artbook in America a while ago, but it's been delayed for years. [www.amazon.com]
They're releasing a MegaMan Zero art book very soon though: [www.amazon.com]
Oh sure, now I see that all that information is already available on Capcom's site :/
Looking at all this stuff reminds how great and charming Okami is. It's a shame they closed down Clover. I'd love a sequel. On the other hand, it's not as the story was left unfinished (unlike Shenmue) and I agree that, sometimes, it's better to make it once and leave it at that, than ruining the art by making uninspired sequels. Still, if a hypothetical Okami 2 weren't uninspired, then I sure would love a sequel. After all, when something is great, it is only natural that one craves for more, is it not?
And Okami has produced some of the best artwork I've seen in videogames. If that book weren't so expensive, I'd buy it.
@Carroceiro: $40 for an artbook? That's cheap my friend!
My love for this game is crazy awesome, I'm buying the game (again!) and the art book whenever it's available.
@LionheartAce: It may be cheap for you, but you're clearly rich. After all, only a person who has so much money that doesn't know what to do with it, buys the same game twice.
I, however, am not rich and I value my money.
I don't really know how much artbooks usually are. Maybe this is actually cheap FOR an artbook, but 40$ (plus shipping expenses) is a whole lot of money to just look at a bunch of pretty drawings and be done with it.
man, i need to finish this game finally
Personally I'd really like to see some art of Ammy in a human form. I'd like to see how the slightly goofy human art would mesh with the obvious coolness she has as a wolf.
All this does is remind me of all those emails I've gotten from Amazon asking me to re-approve my order every time they push the art book's release date back. Thanks, Luke. ;_;
It is nice to see them releasing some more stuff and trying to hype the game for the Wii release. This game deserves more attention from consumers.
I too ordered the Art of Okami book over a year ago (January 2007) and have waited and waited and waited for the book to ship. Maybe the Wii version of the game will get the book-publishing wheels turning again.
In the meantime I will make my own low-res art book from the downloads.
Now where did I put that hole punch and glue gun?
thanks, new wallpaper for my new laptop.
new game for my wii coming soon, considering i never played through it for ps2.
I wish it hadn't been delayed. I'd really like to play Okami now.
Thank you for the link I've need a new wallpaper for a while on my computer. My son came home from school and said "Wow Mommy, that's beautiful". I'm going to have to play the game with him. I've also been happy to see Nintendo Power has been covering this game a lot in their Magazine. Hopefully people will pick it up.
@Kinburn: Oh yeah all the UK mags are covering it a lot too!! but then again they covered No More Heroes a lot as well...*gulp*
Still that art...wow amazing
@excel_excel: Are you trying to diss NMH?
It's only the best mature game on the Wii (that isn't a port).
@Carroceiro: Well, that's in light of how most artbooks are really in the $60 - $100 range . . . sometimes more, depending on the artist and rarity. But, yeah, $40 is still a lot of money to consider for a 'picture' book, but of course it depends on what the individual gets out of it. I, for one, would readily spend that money because I feel like I can enjoy the book for a long time.
Great to have the art as wallpapers, though! I always loved the really detailed, traditional style they used for the stills during narrative sequences and whenever you meet a new monster.
Udon now has the date for the art book for early May 2008 and they also have a preview of some the pages:
It seems like they might actually publish it this time around. Capcom is also having a contest of some sort with the fan art.
Ah, the Art of Okami might be in limbo for a long time, but you can still satisfy your Okami Art tinglings with the "Okami Official Complete Works"! All 279 pages of artbook goodness is available here ~ [www.play-asia.com]
Still, if there's another art book due to come out, I'll have to nab that one, too ^_^
@cubabit: cant disagree with that.
its a beautiful game, much love to capcom for them wallpapers.
