Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Bugs And All, Ships 2 Million

Bugs? Hah. Crippled online performance? Whatever. Paying full-price for an expansion pack? You don't give two hoots. Why? Because Ubisoft announced today that they've shipped 2 million copies of Rainbow Six Vegas 2, which when you consider the game's short gestation period and myriad of problems is good news for the company. Not good news for gamers, since it shows Ubisoft can release any old guff and get away with charging $60 for it, but hey, we're not talking about you. We're talking about Ubisoft.

  • online for the ps3 is fixed but bugs still remain

  • Sequels sell. That simple. I know a guy who buys games simply because they're sequel.
He bought R6V2, and I asked him why.
    His response:
"I don't know? Because it was good enough to have a second one?"
The funny part is that he hated the original one.

  • I bought this because I never played the original, so it's all new to me (and I love it). I can understand why people refer to it as an expansion pack though. From what I hear the graphics and gameplay are slightly upgraded.

Then again... wouldn't that make Halo 2 an expansion to the original?

  • They've also been advertising the hell out of it. I'm sure that helped.

  • At least Assassin's Creed was perfect.

  • Maybe I should possibly think about maybe considering borrowing this game.

  • I hate the "it's basically the same with some new textures and features" attitude. Who cares? The media loved the first one, and gave it all kinds of good scores. If another game comes along that does everything just a little bit better, it's "not worth the money." How does that make since? Game A is worth the money, while the sequel has more features, better graphics, and is more tweaked yet it gets a worse score. Example is Halo 3. Why dock some points for it being "halo 2 HD" when in reality it had Forge, Saved Films, more weapons, more vehicles, 4 player online co op, etc and isn't worth the price you paid for the second one?

Oh wait, there is an exception. Mario, Zelda, and Dragon Quest. Rabid fanbases do wonders to media "opinions."

  • I am ashamed to be a part of that 2 million, I thought the game would be so much more than it is. Boy, was I mistaken.

  • kinda glad I didn't get it, there's other games coming out soon that I should definately save up for. This game is a maybe when I get more money.

    Rainbow 6 Vegas 3 confirmed :(

  • So far my biggest let down of 2008, This game really did come off as nothing more then a glorified expansion pack to me.

  • I'm still boycotting Ubi for that Ziff bullshit. This was the game that would've come closest to me breaking my oath. Thankfully, it's broken.

  • @subterfunk: perfect at being tedious and boring perhaps

  • I'm not big on FPS's, and Call of Duty 4 is still keeping my attention, surprisingly. Maybe this will be my next FPS purchase when I'm done with CoD4, it doesn't look too bad, and I enjoy tactical based games more than run and gun games.

    @MrAkash: huh?!

  • @MrAkash: I also boycott Ubisoft

  • @Lot krotan (wut?): Halo has always been shit :>

  • Isn't this the same thing EA got crap for 2 years ago, and everyone said "Ya, Ubisoft is great because they don't do that" . . well, here ya go. Ubisoft just figured out what makes money.

  • @Lot krotan (wut?): Simple. Because they already played the same game for twenty hours.
If you're getting the same game again, why bother spending a dime on it? Go play the old one.

  • @okenny :):

That shit about Ubisoft blackballing Ziff because of their Assassin's Creed review. That's why there wasn't any preview coverage of R6V2 in Ziff publications.

I mean, I don't always love Ziff...but any publisher that pulls this needs to be blackballed by the gamer.

  • @Polywhirl: I can say with only a little bit of shame that my ps3 game collection consists solely of "game title 4" games

  • They say shipped, that doesn't mean...
    well, you know the drill.

  • Wow..2 million units..

Guess garbage does sell. Then again, consumers love giving money to fiddy and the likes.

  • @BlindedFTW:

I'm talking media, not average joe reviews. It's great that you think that all Halo games suck, that wasn't the argument at hand.

  • @Waka in Japan: Yea, but not too many copies are just sitting on shelves.

@droopy: You poor soul. Then again, I was shocked when I had realized that I had 12 PS3 games and 30 BR movies. I don't even know how I accumulated so much, except for the BOGO offers for BR movies on Amazon.

  • I wouldn't mind so much if the game wasn't actually in many ways *worse* than the original. The control interface, for instance, is crap compared to the original Vegas- I rarely had any trouble with the original, but I can't count the number of times the new one has gotten me killed. And how is it that NPC models actually looked better in the original? Was it so hard to make eyeballs not clip through characters eyelids?

Of course, I also wouldn't be so pissed if every review I'd seen before picking it up hadn't given the damn thing a 9.0 rating or better and a glowing description. Nice journalistic integrity, boys.

  • Grammar Nazi Dick Alert:

It's "myriad stuff". No "of". That is all.

To hell with Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Anything Tom Clancy isn't worth my time.

  • Proud to not have bought this game, but kudos to everyone who's enjoying it.

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 09:41 PM on 03/31/08 *

@MrAkash: I know about the controversy. What confuses me is that you seemed as though you were trying to boycott a noble effort but it caused you so much pain that you were relieved when you fell off the wagon... at least the the gist i got from what you said :\

The day I pay $60 for an expansion pack I will swallow a razor wire, pull it out of my ass and floss myself to death.

    Vegas 2 was...okay, story wise.

It takes place at the same time logans team is running through vegas. My fav level online is the theater.

  • Image of ManjiKengo ManjiKengo at 09:43 PM on 03/31/08 *

    @slomo788:

It's not really an expansion pack though...

granted 60 bucks for the vidya is pushing it no matter what.

  • @okenny :):

Nah, I was relieved that I heard the game was essentially broken and therefore the temptation was gone.

Next test? End War, or EndWar, whatever.

  • man...i not really interested in the series but i almost want to pirate the game out of spite >.>;;;;;

  • @MrBionic: both are acceptable: [en.wikipedia.org]

  • OOops. "myriad problems" Between reading it, and posting, my mind wandered.

  • thru dat...! I didn't even want this game, untill my buddies were all gettin it so I caved in. I am sooooo upset with myself in falling prey to hype. I returned the game after 2 days of crappy online for PS3 and the giant 3GB install. I will be forced to install a 250GB HDD and be done with the whole storage issue for a long time.

  • what were these problems so to speak ive played many hours and never ran into any?

  • @I Think We're Property:
"Was it so hard to make eyeballs not clip through characters eyelids?"

I guess so, especially with the UE3. Has anybody else noticed this? Mass Effect, Gears, and now Vegas 2. I'm just going to go ahead and say it. I fucking hate the UE3. A lot of it's games seem to have the same shitty graphical glitches. It can make good looking games like Bioshock, but it seems like there are more crappy looking ones. The original Vegas still looked a whole shitload better than this one.

  • @MisterSleep: How am I supposed to be a decent grammar nazi when they keep going wishy-washy on me? lol

  • @Lot krotan (wut?): Don't worry, I've caught flack from people before for a similar comment. I had made a criticism about how game reviewers pick and choose when they want to say that a game that is just a bit better than its predecessor means that it gets a better score and when it gets a worse score. Just look at SSBB compared to R&C. For SSBB, all the reviews went to the measure of "95% scoring Melee with small improvements: 100%" meanwhile for R&C, the ratings went more like "95% scoring R&C Size Matters with a few improvements= more of the same, so 90%." Reviewers can't seem to stick to a uniform dock the score points for being similar to previous iterations or rating the game as though it had no predecessors.

  • Image of ManjiKengo ManjiKengo at 09:48 PM on 03/31/08 *

@JesseLacey: I've had tons of framerate issues and random fuckers killing me without them even popping their heads out from cover; all I've seen were their gun barrels pokin through the walls. Perhaps that's just lag though.

Usually I play on the dedicated servers though.

  • @MisterSleep: Although, to be technical, the word *is* being used as an adjective in the article...

  • @slomo788: I'm going to hold you to that comment.

  • "@Lot krotan (wut?): "Game A is worth the money, while the sequel has more features, better graphics, and is more tweaked yet it gets a worse score."

Yeah, it really doesn't make sense. A lot of people liked the original for what it did. It would be dumb for Ubisoft to make a sequel to that game that did something different. If a sequel to a game I like is just more of the same, well, good! That means it's more of what I liked!

And Vegas 2 certainly offers up more. There's an all new campaign that took me and a buddy about seven hours to complete on normal. It's got a dozen new multiplayer maps usable both in deathmatch and co-op terrorist hunts. There's a couple new multiplayer game types. They even evolved the gameplay a little bit by adding in a sprint and bullet penetration.

But I'm not going to try and change anyone's mind about the game. If someone already finds the game's existence unnecessary, there's nothing I can say to change that.

  • That is pathetic. I mean, RSV is not a bad game, and I was going to buy this one, but when I heard from the previews, I said "This is exactly like the old one!" so I held out on buying it until I heard public opinion and I'm glad I saved me $60 on an expansion pack. No thanks UbiSoft, that money's going into the Warhawk expansion pack, cheaper, better.

  • It would be one thing to bitch about it being an expansion pack if the first one sucked, but it didn't. R6V was awesome and people wanted more of it. You don't fix what isn't broken. After all the games industry is a business, so why risk millions on a new IP when you already have a high quality one that can be expanded upon?

  • @jetsmanfoley: All I know is as soon as I saw the ad for this game on Mega64's website, I was sold.

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 09:53 PM on 03/31/08 *

@MrAkash: LOL... ok, I get you now :) I'm easily confused, I should have figured that's what you meant. I forget people normally don't randomly say screwed up things like I do :(

It's really unfortunate that companies like this rely on people not knowing what they're getting for the success of their game. At the same time that you don't expect a company to say things like we ship our games with bugs... its sad that they go through extra steps to have them concealed by trying to strong-arm the media to not expose the issues that would otherwise force them to please a competent game.

When this expansion is launched as a full game, it kind of says it all about what Ubisoft is becoming doesn't it? Ubi doesn't want to bought out by EA but they are becoming like EA in terms of how they strain the quality of their products to make annual sales marks. Sadly as this proves, as with Assassin's Creed, it works.

  • Nothing pissed me off more then enemies appearing into existence before my eyes, locked and loaded while my teammates refused to throw a smoke grenade where I needed it.
