Do You Finish Every Game You Buy?

Ah, yes, Friday. The day of the week where we settle in, relax and just talk. You guessed it, we've got another round of TUD, (aka Tell Us Dammit) coming your way. For those not in the known, Tell us Dammit is our opportunity to learn more about you reader person. That way we can feel closer! And perhaps, even for a fleeting second, feel kinda bad when we ban your ass. Here's how it works: We ask a question. You answer it. So! This week, the TUD Giraffe asks:

Do you finish every game you buy?

Man, I am bad about finishing games. Unless I'm reviewing them, I find it really hard to complete the game. And it's not a time thing, but in a way, I guess I don't want that experience to end. (Sentimental and stupid, I know!) Usually, I start a game, get close to the end and start another one. Vicious cycle, that.

So reader person, what about you?

  • Darling, I don't even open every game I buy.

  • No. But I try, I swear.

  • *snicker*...................XD

  • Unless it's shit, yes.

  • i try to, but if they are to boring to finish or loose my interest then sorry i can't

    so no but i try.

  • can you even finish Chromehounds? That's a technical no. (as a lot of games)

As for finishing the single player campaign, no

  • I finish every good game I buy. Some may take a back seat for months, but eventually I get 'em done.

Except Actraiser 2. That game was fucking impossible.

I try. I really do. I have a tendency to try and beat a game 100% the first time around. Maybe that's why I never finish them...

  • Of course not, I would like to see you finish Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for the DS without commiting hirakiri. (I'm to cool to kill myself the emo way.)

  • BRIAN CRECENTE DOES NOT APPROVE OF YOUR SHENANIGANS.

  • I do not like games, I love games. What i do not love i do not finish.

I will always try to finish games, even if some arent as good as others, because i believe in a happy ending.

  • Eventually.

  • No. I buy games and sometimes don't play them with the intention that I will.

I've beaten most games I've bought.

I got 6 hours into Blue Dragon and stopped playing it. I got sick of forcing myself to play it.

    -------------------------------------

funny thing though......Notice how when we finish games we say "I beat that game"?

and when we finish books we "finished it" or "finished that movie"

Why not say we "Beat that book" or "Beat that movie!"?

"I beat I am Legend last week. I got the bad ending."

I try. But I have a bad habit of getting really into a game, then buying another one and not touching that one for months.

For some reason I always finish Wld Arms games MONTHS after I get them.

  • Unless they were a poorly done game, I beat em. Gotta make it worth it somehow, learn some new things along the way hopefully.

  • Mostly. The major exception is post-FF7 Final Fantasy games. They start to become boring about 15 minutes in, after which I'm able to stand the awful gameplay, ridiculous dialogue, and foppish clothing for about 9-10 more hours before my curiosity to see what stupidly insane plot twist the ****-wizards cooked up this time runs out and I go play something fun.

  • I still haven't finished Mass Effect, skate., FFXII (and I always finish FF). I just don't have the attention span anymore. Stuff like COD4/HL2:EP2 which are short and sweet seem to be my limit at the moment.

  • i did, up until kingdom hearts. now i have a ridiculous backlog that doesn't justify my mgs4/fes/ffta2 preorders :(

  • I will..... eventually. But recently there have been just to many good games out there! It is a great time to be a gamer.

  • Yes, well....almost...i couldn't finish neverwinter nights 2 because it was a complete mess , and halo 2 because it was too easy and too boring... ah, and gothic 3 also because im saving it for later
Anyway , i don't buy games, i have a friend that has a store soo, he let me take the games i want to play for a while
Lately im kind of slow, im only winning 2 games per week :(

  • For the most part I finish, unless they suck, but sometimes I sit on them for, oh, years *FFX*coughcough* before I get around to polishing them off. Others I blow through in like a day.

  • @ManjiKengo: because videogamesa are interactive.

  • Umm yea.............Most of them are finished any that I have that arn't it's either that I just got it or it's bullshit hard. hahaha

  • @Americo: Ditto to that.

For a while if I'm really excited over the game, I will cover ever nook and cranny trying to get everything in the game, but in doing so I end up getting bored after a while and give up at some point....
...or i get frustrated that that ONE guy keeps killing me before I get to the last heart piece and I throw my controller at the wall....

I beat the vast majority of them. The few I haven't mainly were because I was really near the end and my computer entirely exploded along with my saves... that or the game just wasn't any fun.

  • About 80% of them. Sometimes I just can't do it though, given the fact that I don't have as much free time as I used to and I dont want to use that time playing a game that isn't gripping me (struggling to make myself finish Lost Odyssey right now)

And I never play more than one game at any given time, with the exception of one handheld and one console game. I don't know if it is just me, but I really do not think it is possible for a human being to be as immersed in a game when they are cheating on it with other games.

  • Still have to finish Condemned too. Had it for about a year and still haven't got past the 3rd chapter. Just too damn scary. The only reason I brave it out for 10 mins at a time is because of the positive word of mouth.

  • I have about 400 games, buy about 5 more each week (usually classic games so don't assume I'm rich), and managed to beat like 2 a month. As of late, I'm beating at least one game a week and sometimes squeeze in two or three. I'm getting there... I think.

@Koztah: I just got through the Demon's Cave. I hated the game at first due to the difficulty, but I'm slowly working my way through it and loving it.

Ghouls n Ghosts or whatever the series is labelled as is also incredibly hard, but it's due to the horrid controls and not the fact the game is just tough. God, I hate when someone says they beat any of those games because the sloppiness of it all just pisses me off.

  • Not at all. I have typical games and w/e but a lot of them are music related ones which do not end really.

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 11:17 PM on 03/28/08 *

    @Marion517: Same.

When I have time I try to.

But most of the time I buy a lot of games just to see the design / game mechanics. Or how the series has evolved over time.

Unless its a real good game I usually dont clear it all the way to the end.

Not enough time to finish every single RPG I buy either. :x

Id say its about 50/50 ratio atm.

  • Yup yup! If I didn't, I'd feel like I wasted my money.

  • Image of Shindokie Shindokie at 11:17 PM on 03/28/08 *

SOmetimes. SOmetimes a game just gets a little boring or i have ADD

    lol. I guess it's a common question!

  • I generally get to the end of the games that I buy, but I often don't get 100% completion since my free time is limited. As long as I get the story I'm generally happy, even if I skip the sidequests and extras.

  • @ManjiKengo:
because movies and books are much more passive.in games your fighting something, conquering something yourself.in books and movies you read or watch someone else do it.

if i buy the game for multi player only(cod4,h3,mostly fps)then no but i beat all my single player games.also that reminds me i need to finish devil may cry 4 and lost odyssey before gta4 ><

  • Lets see, out of all my PS3 games (12) I have beaten Portal, Resistance, COD4, COD3, and Motorstorm. Oblivion takes too damn long (which is good too) and if Uncharted didn't have stupid wave after wave of fights that were randomly difficult that prolly would have been beaten awhile ago.

  • just like 50 % of them.

Hey kotaku, had you ever asked:From the systems you own, what is your favorite?(next gen consoles only).

  • It takes forever, but yeah, I like to think I do. Either that, or I have a save lying around with an underleveled character/team right before the final boss, and while I intend to buckle down and powerlevel at some point... I'm not sure if it will ever actually happen. Bioshock is a special instance- I became so retardedly reliant on the Vita-Chambers that the moment they were taken away from me... imagine a trauma victim unhooked from their IVs, times two. It's kinda pathetic, really- I can beat Devil May Cry (all- 2 was the hardest, because it makes you want to kill yourself), but not Bioshock.

  • Well, I have far too many games, but whenever I start playing one I don't quit until I finish it. I don't typically do all of the extras in games (just because I have so many games to get around to) but I try in certain games (like, Smash Bros. Brawl, which is going to take a while to get all of those trophies...)

  • LOL!

No, unfortunately out of all the games I own I've only fully completed... 30 sumthin games...some still in their shrink rap.

I should really stop buying games at this point.
    :(

  • I'm horrible at this. A handful are still in wrappers, such as Soul Nomad, Army of Two, a few box sets, Wild Arms 5, the latest Growlanser, and that new Metal Gear Solid Essentials. But I don't think that one counts! =D I've evened opened some because I really wanted to see the art inside the manuals, but never played them. The ones I do finish are ones that just suck me in 120%, or finish before I can decide if I want to keep playing it or not. Even really good games like Devil May Cry 4 is sitting at 50% complete because something else came out and I get pulled into it. I will definitely be seeing myself finish GTAIV and MGS4 though and I'm currently working on Crisis Core.

  • I try. Occasionally there will be a boss I can't be fucked to get past, or I'll just can't be bothered anymore.

I think we say beat because you usually do have a final boss to beat at the end of a game; something like Burnout, I probably would say finished or completed. Not that I ever have tried for 100%...but when I finish a solo tour in Rock Band, I say finished, not beat. Just me?

  • if i like the game, i always finish it.

its the crappy ones i leave alone

  • eventually... or at least i try.

if the game sucks, i'll usually sell it before i ever get around to beat it. but if the games good, i'll usually beat it quite fast (other then rpgs).

the problem is. once i DO finish it, it gets tossed aside and then the next game starts. i probably won't go back to it for another few years (if even)

  • today, i have just finished ratchet and clank future: tod after palying it for about 3 days.. i bought it day one back in october.. so yeah, i finish every game i play, eventually

  • VERY rarely. Handheld games (DS, PSP, Gameboy)I finish around 90%, but console and PC games, around 2%-5%. I shit you not.

I have a bit of a problem staying focused. Nothing medical, mind you, but I get distracted by shiny objects pretty easily, and then get suckered into long sessions of unbeatable games, like Guitar Hero or Madden, shortening the time I have to give to other games.

  • I have this disorder called V.A.D.D.(pronounced like van, but with a D at the end instead of an N) which stands for Videogame Attention Deficit Disorder. Here is a small example:

"Awesome Rainbow Six Begas 2!! Awesome, up to chapter five!" ((Puzzle Quest on DS comes out)) "OOH SHINY!" ((stops playing R6V2))

That's just a minor example of something that has afflicted me for so long. It's why I never finished Phoenix Wright(the first one) despite having fun with it. Every once in a while though, I will encounter a game that engrosses me so much that I cannot put it down until complete it, like any game in the Half-Life series. Whenever a new game comes out in a relatively close time frame, it seems to take my attention away from the game I am playing.

  • im embarass to say this but... i dont even finished CoD4!.
Since the day i bough it i just play it online,i play the single player like and hour and got me bored.

  • Games I buy, yes.
Games I rent, maybe, if it sucks, no.

XBLA games, never. I buy them, but never finish them.

  • @ManjiKengo:

Because in video games, you take a active role in achieving the ending. Hence, YOU yourself beat it. In books and movies, no matter how hard you flip pages, or how extreme you fidget in your chair, the movie or book will still come to an end. You're just a passive viewer there.

  • @Koztah: QFT

Although I try only to buy good games. Recent mistake: DMC 4. Sorry, just couldn't do it... I've been spoiled by God of War.
