When we first saw screens of Sonic Unleashed, it was pretty clear that we were looking at something that was only feasible on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. No offense intended to the GameCube Turbo, but Sonic and the Secret Rings didn't look this good. Chatter about a sensible Wii version has been making the rounds since first screens and video sneaked out, but it would appear that Sega is planning to unleash more Sonic love on every viable platform.
Retailer GameStop is currently listing Sonic Unleashed for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as well as the Wii and PlayStation 2. All listings are labeled with November 4 ship dates, along with platform appropriate pricing.
Thanks for the heads up, Daniel!

Gamecube Turbo. I haven't heard that one before. Good form.
November 4th 2009 would be better. Take all the time they can to make this not suck.
Gamecube Turbo? LOL
When will they bring back Chao? I liked raising them =(
"GameCube Turbo"
LMAO . . . that's great.
MAKE BELIEVES REBORN!
Sorry, couldn't help myself. Either way, here's hoping it's good.
It technically IS a GameCube Turbo, but I just hate how people call it last Gen. Does graphics really determine the generation it belongs in? Generation just means the next incarnation of the console/portable.
I can see it happening, seeing as Sega is currently in the midset of releasing ALL games on ALL systems.
As a Wii owner, I would also be happy if this were the case (I'd be even happier if the game turned out as good as people are hyping it to be).
wow im impressed.
It wouldn't be far fetched that whichever engine they are using can be scaled up or down depending on the target platform.
This being SEGA I'm sure they split the codebase into 360/PS3 code and PS2/Wii code.
I'll wait and see, as a HUGE Sonic fan I want a fun Sonic game and this looks like one.
Gamestop listing a game for a console doesn't mean anything.
Didn't they list a 360 MGS4 before already?
They just add those in randomly.
@Mini-Boss: my thoughts exactly.
November so far sounds good now, GOW2 + Sonic Unleashed.
Sega had me hooked at that teaser.
Purchased! could it be a downloadable game?
Pity the wii, the PS3, the 360 and the Ps2. More dreck.
@Polywhirl: I remember some site having Super Mario Galaxy for the 360. But I think that was a joke and not a mixup...
It looks fun. It looks like a blend of old and new. Lets hope it is made of great quality.
God damnit, the Wii has got a lot of graphic-power. Just hasn't been "unleashed" yet.
Yes! Now I can buy this. Thank you Nin- um, Sega.
@Mlata: Hey, whatever helps you sleep at night.
@Mlata: Doesn't change the fact that a 720p output is impossible for the Wii. I believe that's what they were referring to.
Hmm... PS3 or Wii...
This is the first sonic game I've wanted since I was crushed by the disappointment that was Sonic Heroes.
@Mlata: so sad....by the time its "unleashed" the wii2 turbo with a gamecube attached to it, will be out.
@Polywhirl: Agreed. Gamestop loves playing the guessing game, just so they can throw the games up on a "coming soon" list, hype them like crazy, and push pre-orders on everyone who comes in. And hey, if the game turns out not to be coming out for that system, then they can only hope that those who pre-ordered it will forget about the money they already put down.
Free money! Everybody wins! Except you, but whatever.
I just hope the Wii version isn't a half-assed port of the ps2 one.
It's fairly close to the first, I wouldn't be surprised if SU is a joke.
I would not be surprised! I will never forget how GREAT Sonic adventure stages looked the 1st time I saw them, or PSO low poly but awesome texture. I knew right away that Sonic team has one of the best texture designers at hand.
Heh. Turbo. Imagine the Wii would actually have a Turbo button. Or the GameCube in that case. "Unleash the full potential of your GameCube. Turn it into a Wii at the hit of a button, overclocking the CPU by 10%!" :D
Joking...
Please let Sega Superstar Tennis not be an example for this game... that game sucks even more than the previous Sega F$#"ups.
I will be happy if the new sonic doesn't just plain suck.
I wouldn't get my hopes up - Gamestop isn't exactly the most reliable source. And if Unleashed were to come to the Wii, it would have to have a huge graphical downgrade. No way is it gonna look that good.
@Moonshadow101: The Wii does have great graphical capabilities, mind you not as good as the PS3 or 360. However you should not judge the Wii by the PS2 ports it has been given, bear that in mind they are ports, which would mean that pretty much none of the games assets would have been changed but if you think of the Wii specific titles(AAA titles, not the lastest brand cash in) they look great. Nameley Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, GH3 and No More Heroes to name a few
I foresee a "superior" Sonic Unleashed on 360 & PS3, and then a watered-down Wii and PS2 version.
@cameleon: No More Heroes has a great style going for it but graphically it looks like shit. Keep in mind I loved the game enough to turn a Travis pic into my avatar. And Metroid Prime 3/Super Mario Galaxy are all over the place when it comes to visuals. What do I mean?
In Metroid Prime 3, start a new game, and play through the GFS Olympus. Beautiful looking stage, technically (and artistically). Then go to Bryyo. Great place artistically, but outside of some cleverly used bloom and HUD lighting effects, it looks pretty meh.
In Super Mario Galaxy, go to Gusty Garden Galaxy (which has my favorite video game music of all time, just thought I'd add that). Fucking beautiful. What with the high poly count and the great draw distance, you could fool yourself into thinking you were looking at a 360 game. Then, beat the level and go back to the main hub. Horrid looking place.
The Wii has power - I'd just like to see a developer utilize it consistantly. Sega will NOT be that company. Why? 'Cuz as a developer, Sega and Sonic Team are fucking lazy. Mark my words - as much as I love the Wii, this WILL be a PS2 port. Sega is just like that.
@cameleon: In particular the PS2's biggest weakness is its inability to do single-pass multitexturing, while the GC could do something like 8 textures per pass. (The Wii probably even more.)
ugh.. ever since Sonic Adventure the series has gone downhill. Why not make a direct sequel to the old skool sonic games!? Why all these crappy new characters and this Eggman crap!? Pffft...I'm glad I'm not into the sonic games anymore. It's because of all this crap the series is ruined. Though I will give this one a chance. BUT! It better be a direct sequel to Sonic and Knuckles or else I'm snapping necks!
@cameleon:
It's a GC with an overclocked CPU/GPU and more RAM. Great graphical capabilities? not quite. Better than the GC, PS2 and Xbox? Yes.
lol...Turbo XD
@NeoSnake4/ねおっなけ4: wasn't his name always doctor eggman? they just changed it to robotnik for the earlier american versions of the games.
@ph15h: Then the original gameboy went through about 100 "gens" with all the slimlines and colors and whatnot... I guess that makes the PSP a 108th generation handheld, and the slimline PSP a 109th generation, especially since the new PSP does have more ram.
I wish they'd stop making PS2 games... The PS2 honestly needs to die to encourage growth of the PS3, which still isn't doing THAT great even if sales have picked up for it a lot.
NO!
Release it on the 360 and PS3. Then release a game built from the ground up for Wii, THEN port it to PS2.
@Fatass of Kickassness: No way, Sega sucks Nintendo's dick now, at least Sonic-wise.
PSP gets PS2's castoffs and DS gets new titles. 360 and PS3 have to share and Wii gets its own title. See Mario and Sonic, Brawl. It may be down to the Nintendo platform's unique attributes as well but it seems like Sega likes always doing something special for Nintendo
I'm going to be very angry if this game sucks. I wonder if I should preorder it next week or just wait a little longer.
The Wii/PS2 version will probably be the same thing.. and suck.. but hey! It's new Sonic, so it'll suck on the 360/PS3 too :P
I find this somewhat interesting, because it essentially means there are going to be two different different incarnations of the game running different engines. After all, I would find it surprising if the PS2 version was running the same engine as the Xbox360 version.
It'll be interesting to see just what the differences are between the two versions. I mean, even given that the levels aren't going to be dramatically different, there should be differences in models, textures, frame-rates and possible bugs.
As for the game itself, it looks darn good at a glance. It's pretty difficult to screw up 2D Sonic game play, so there's a very good chance that the game will be fun to play. Though I am still hoping they don't go too hokey/gimmicky with the plot, it wouldn't ruin the game play, but I would still prefer a return to the simplistic un-intrusive Sonic plots that we had during the Genesis era.
REMAKE SONIC 3 & KNUCKLES, YOU BASTARDS!
I'm hoping that this game is good.
Really? It's going to be for the Wii too? I just hope it doesn't end up being like GH3 on all the systems, where if you played the Wii version and compared it to say, the XBox 360 version, you could noticeably tell the differences in quality. (Graphic quality, that is) If they can make it as lovely for the Wii as it is for the PS3, I'll give them crazy kudos.
@Fatass of Kickassness: Hey, Secret Rings has the best graphics of any third-party game on the Wii. Graphics have tended to be the least of the new Sonic's problems.
The Wii's technical drawbacks are massively overstated and lead lazy developers to cut the graphics using that as an excuse. Nintendo and Sega have proven them completely wrong.
The video and pics looked alright, but they were leaked video and pics. I'm pretty sure most of the camera work for the gameplay was just to show off the stage or something preset that the camera does when you're going up loop-de-loops. We still have the behind-Sonic view, but the real question is if they reworked the engine to let us go get secrets without the camera being all like "Hai guys wut are you doin?" Oh, and if Sonic turns, we turn with him. Not all this "THE STAGE IS THAT WAY!" crap we've been dealing with.
That scenery sure look purty though.
Anybody else think the Wii version is going to have crappy graphics?
@Shaverdian: Of course.
I have so many hopes for this game that somehow i can feel that i'm going to get a huge disappointment!
oh and im happy its going to be released on the ps2, i dont know if by november i already have a next gen, im not very in the mood to buy one, so far with some good exceptions next gen games have been so uninspiring to me, x360 have already two years on the market, ps3 and wii one year, and only a few games interests me, thats somewhat disturbing!
Seems more like "more sonic hate" considering how much Sega seems to enjoy dropping hints that each new Sonic game is actually going to be good before running it into the ground in a mess of idiocy.
Gamecube turbo?
Classic.
I'm gonna rechristian my little beloved white box with that name.
probably more suitable anyway, since im still playing mose gamecube games on it, as i missed out on that era (had a Dreamcast at the time!)
But seriously, i hope they Sega would be sensible and try to put some effort into the Wii version, i don't have the time to buy another console just for one game.
i'm more likely to fire up my Dreamcast then to touch another Sega game, so it better be good, srga you hear?! BETTER!
Sonic hate..... bothers me. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the most recent Sonic games were disappointing. However, the sheer amount of, vitriolic hate spewed and Sega/Sonic, is simply awe astounding to me.
I mean, hate, is not an emotion that comes easily to me. To me, the emotion feels, uncomfortable, if not outright unnatural, and it's actually a huge struggle for me to hold onto the emotion for more than a couple moments.
So when I see a game I don't like it, I simply toss it aside and forget about it. I figure that it wasted enough of my time already, without me fixating on it for who knows how long.
So when I see so much Sega, Squaresoft, Microsoft, Sony, etc hate, it simply astounds me. How is it possible to hold onto such emotions for so long? How is it even helpful to do so?
I dunno, I guess I simply do not get it, and as such it bothers me.
Im looking forward to Sonic Unleashed. Hope it turns out good, Ive always liked Sonic and his cast.
ugh.... should have proof read my last entry. Let me try to rephrase that in a concise manner.
Hate is unnatural to me, therefore strange to me, therefore bothers me. Thus the Sonic hate bothers me....
....wow, I should try thise entire concise thing more often.
Wii version will be 5 levels but 100 minigames!
@WolvenOne: You're expressing your inner feelings in Kotaku, in a game topic.
Sorry to say, buddy, but this isn't the most appropriate place.
If it is going to push the capabilities of the PS3 and 360 then a PS2 and Wii version would be shallow version of a complete game. Watch them throw in mini games in the Wii version.
@Ashurahori:
I'm a very open fellow. Besides, my inner feelings concerning the habits of, many video game fans out there, isn't exactly, off topic.
I remember when I used to play the old skool sonic plus read the comic books AND watch the tv series on the USA channel. Those were the days.
