The release of SOCOM Confrontation via the PlayStation Network this fall may have the mass appeal to be a digitally distributed "killer app" for the PlayStation fan base, but Sony has plenty of unique offerings over the next few months, some of which we are already intimately familiar with. Echochrome and Wipeout HD haven't been lacking in exposure, but MTV's Stephen Totilo goes hands-on with two more PSN originals, Elefunk and PixelJunk Monsters Encore to get a handle on what's next for the Store.
The dates MTV provides for the next four PSN showpieces match up pretty well with the leaked release schedule from a few weeks ago.
According to the report, it would appear that Echochrome may very well be bypassing a UMD release, opting for a download from the PC and PlayStation Stores. The hard copy release in Japan didn't exactly light a fire under the PSP community.
Quickie previews for the uninitiated await.
PSN Next Wave Revealed — WipEout HD, Echochrome, Elefunk, PixelJunk Monsters Encore [MTV Multiplayer]

I wonder what the encore is all about. EIther way Im so excited about Socom. I want to freeze myself for it. Also anybody know anything about Elefunk.
I do wish that psn is capable of seeing more PSn games. Is there a reason why they don't have more in the pipes. I assume they have a list coming for fall. I guess we have to wait for E3.
Talking about E3 would it hurt you Kotaku guys to have a party in Los Angeles when you guys are here. It will be great. Oktxsbye
PSN games ftw! Shame the store updates are so lame.
Wipeout. HD. Gief. Nao.
I want that thing so bad. Don't even care about echochrome. Or SOCOM. Just want my F-ZERO copy. Man. Where are you, May (according to leaked schedule)?
Echo needs an xbla arcade release, but I have my doubts it will happen.
I just think indie titles should hit both download services, PSN and XBLA. It helps spread the game via word of mouth if more people can play it.
(note: kayce is in no way shape or form trying to suggest the playstation doesn't need its exclusives. he is merely suggesting games like geo wars, rez hd, super stardust, pixeljunk and etc be on all services for everyone because of how A+ they are.)
Some awesome quality games coming to PSN this year. Cannot wait to get my hands on SOCOM and wipeout. Should look sick on my 52" XBR5
Will the echochrome release for the Ps3 include all the levels since the PsP release failed? Or is it still only going to be the first half, for some insane reason?
Pixeljunk Monsters is awesome. I hope the expansion pack comes out soon. My GF is more addicted to it than me and she's having some serious withdrawal.
Is there any chance at Pixel Junk for PSP? I was on the train today and realized how much I would like that.
Socom will own my soul.
@bangbangblah: If you mean PixelJunk Monsters, it supports remote play. I know that probably doesn't help on a train but up here near Seattle, we have ferries and they have high speed internet. So there are options. I am planning on rebuying fl0w when I get my Kratos PSP. I LOVE that game!
Hopefully the poor Echochrome disk sales doesn't mean that it's not doing well at all, because that would be a shame.
I love Pixel Junk Monsters but I wish they would focus on there new project. Eden (i think it's called that) looks like a really good game and am eager to try it out. Echochrome is a must...building bridges for elepants can wait. (Then again, knowing me I'll download it for downloading sake!)
@Komrade_Kayce: "Echo needs an xbla arcade release, but I have my doubts it will happen."
Yeah, especially since it was made by Sony's Japan Studio.
lets hope they arrive on time.
I understand technical difficulties, but when you have a week to test, there isnt much excuse.
hurry up Wipeout HD.
@leimeisei: And thats a Kansas City shuffle XD
@leimeisei: Hahaha! Classic.
@leimeisei:
But see, I wish little shit like that didn't matter. Im all for consoles having to have their little big name exclusives (I hate the practice, but I understand it), but wheres the harm in getting an underdog more light if you put it on every system?
Or even if they went the 'neutral' path and did a low system req's pc release.
Just because a lot of the indie hits on the xbla are ms sponsored, I wouldn't spit on them if they wound up on the PSN. It just means more of my friends can get a kick out of some awesome stuff. Stuff they havent even heard of.
Hell. Just make the sequels exclusive after you get a playerbase going. ;)
@Accordion: As a professional tester, I'd like to state that a week can be woefully inadequate, depending on the size of the project, the number of defects, the testing framework, the team size, etc...
@Komrade_Kayce:
I say all this because I feel retarded buying a PS3 for nothing but PSN games. Seriously. Its got a bucket of content I've played and loved and makes me want to buy one, but really now.
Blu Ray Player - Check
HD Big Name Game Gaming - Check
Not giving a shit about either of those two things and saving up monies for two months now just to buy an 80 gig so I can play some downloadable games that could have been produced on my 90's era PC? - Check
How stupid do you think I felt when three months into owning my 360 I realized I had dumped more time and money into the arcade titles than the brick and mortar games I picked up. Hell, my Wii is FULL (and then some, ty 2gig sd card) of virtual console titles, yet I only actually own two Wii games (Zack and Wiki, Elebits).
Maybe I'll feel less retarded if I hold out till MGS4. Thats something I have a good feeling inside me that I'll play to completion and love every minute of it. Then I could say 'look! I play PS3 games!'
:(
@AverageJoes: But therein lies the problem -- no ps3 for me!
I played the Echochrome demo, and it was almost mind blowing. The PSN is really doing some cool stuff now and I'm really exited to get my hands on these upcoming titles. That is if I got money in the bank...
Operation Broken mirror comes out April.
check PS Blog
:)
i've been playing Echochrome for PS3 and PSP for a week now..The DEMOs that is. They r really unique and a must try if you have a Japanese account. It's games like these that will make me turn on my PS3 and not the craptastic multi-port games those I will be getting on my 360.
@Akmed: Check PS3 fanboy (don't judge me) it has a video on there.
Good. i'd rather download it than go buy it anyway.
As much as I love Pure and Pulse, it will feel so good to play a Wipeout game on a big screen with real controller, again.
@Komrade_Kayce: I know exactly what you are tlaking about. My xbox has around 25 arcade games on it, but only 6 "disc" games, and my Wii has about 11 VC games, but for discs I only have No More heroes and Endless Ocean. I just picked up a PS3, and one of my first thoughts was to get a shit-ton of PSN games.
I relented and bought Ratchet and Clank. But really, just playing the tiny downloadable games makes sense.
With the combination of games costing 60 bucks, me not having an infinite amount of time to play them, and 90% of disc games being play-it-safe sequels... downloadable games find their niche. A very addictive niche.
"Hey, I have a few hundred points left.....well, maybe I'll add some more and grab N+..."
it is DEFINITELY a shame that there aren't more PSN games.
i am REALLY loving their size and scope, and price.. playability.
i could buy like 5 - 8 smaller PSN games for the price of 1 regular game.
i dont have to put in or take out any disks... its SO accessible and awesome. i love the PSN games.
what we REALLY need is N+
@joelface:
Yeah, N+ is definitely a buyer, even if it was free on the PC. I think the game would work beautifully with the ps3 dpad (works pretty damn well with the 360 nub, but not dpad).
But this Pixeljunk... it was Balance in Lifes recommendation to me, I forced my friend to pay out some dollars for it and found it fucking incredible. I can only imagine what this expansion would bring.
@baxterpunch:
Maybe thats the appeal of the downloadable arcades to me. Easy to get into/out of, plus usually a nice combination of depth and simplicity. I guess I just dont have as much time anymore for 40+ hour games, unless they're on a handheld (cause I can take those anywhere).
I really want Echochronome. It's one of those games that really appeal to my sense of "peaceful".
I played the echochrome demo and thought it sucked. But even then, I still want more games like that and flOw.
@Bearskopff: The post on the Pixeljunk philosophy was a few weeks back, but essentially the creator said that each game has a limited time frame and team size, so games are kept small and manageable while they have multiple games underway. I'm sure the PJM expansion has no bearing on the development progress of Eden beyond, say, minor stuff like QA timeframes.
I love Pixeljunk Monsters. It's probably the most played game I've got, other than SingStar which all my friends practically demand I ship over to their houses on a regular basis. It's got a fantastic 2-player co-op mode on it too... it's SO addictive, I've lost count of the amount of times my friend and I have played levels perfectly until round 18/19 (or 20) only to get stormed by spiders, some sneak through, we lose our shot at getting a rainbow... and immediately restart for another shot at it. Best £3.50 I spent in ages, but would love to see an online co-op mode and perhaps a versus mode for it.
Am (sort of) liking Pain too, although only really the "Mime Toss" mode. The main mode is horribly flawed, but "Mime Toss" is very good indeed.
@Bearskopff:
yeah, i was kinda hinting kotaku to show it lol.
seriously can't wait. too bad it's the 17th... :(
i'll have the MGO Beta by then. at least i think. 1.3 patch looks good as-is
@Komrade_Kayce:
I know what you mean... arcade/retro games taking less time and having a nice depth/simplicity balance.
Another thing I like about them is the ability to "get into a groove" and just sit down and engage the game at the gameplay level as opposed to taking in huge cutscenes of plot, or getting hung up on a boring puzzle (or just badly made level!) that holds up the game.
The kind of games I like most have a simple mechanic with a ton of room to refine technique, like Beatmania, Geometry Wars, Gran Turismo, Puyo Puyo, Skate and so on.
Sorry, but Echochrome being download only is ridiculous.
I will *not* buy DL only games - and I want to play Echochrome. :(
@PooPooKaKaBumBum: Echochrome is the perfect example of why you should get behind downloadable games. If it was released on physical media (and I think the PSP version illustrates this) it'd be more expensive.
Echochrome (demo from Jap store) was boring mate, you are missing nothing. However I think you should reconsider your 'no downloads' stance as many of these smaller games would never get released on a BluRay disc.. talk about overkill!
@Sharpfish: Obviously we don't share tastes pal ;)
no we dont :) the demo infuriated me with it's slow control and dodgy 'sucess detection'.. half the time you didn't even need stuff lined up (only almost) and would win. it just felt like it should be a free online flash game to me, a technical curiosity rather than an enjoyable and REPLAYABLE full game.
However i'm sure the full game IS far better than just the demo, for me Pixeljunk monsters was a far better/replayable/enjoyable cheap download title. :)
@PooPooKaKaBumBum:
Same here. If it does well in Japan and they don't release a UMD here, I'm importing it. If it does poorly in Japan, I'll import it before it's hard to find and probably before they announce the formats here (summer?) Downloaded games are rentals. I want to play on both of my PSPs, lend it out, and play on any PSP I buy in the future in case of breaking current ones, regardless of whether I still have a PS3 to transfer it from.
TBH, I've downloaded it already and there's no language barrier at all, but I buy good games. It's just a matter of whether I can get a US UMD or if I have to get the JP version.
Wipeout HD please. Very few racers are as fast paced as wipeout...its just one of the best. Socom is lookin cool too...
I really want Wipeout, though its a little disappointing that HD is re-using levels. Well, more than that. Its disappointing that they're re-using levels from Pure and Pulse only. I would love to see levels like Gare D'Europa or Manor Top make it in.
I really want Wipeout HD. It looks amazing so far and I never played a Wipeout game.
