The guys over at Game Videos and EGM posted up this walk-through analysis of the latest, and last, Grand Theft Auto IV trailer picking apart what they see and all the little hidden details that look to make this game shine. During my visit with the Rockstar folks yesterday they told me that about 70 percent of the video was actual gameplay footage. Yes, that chase scene is actual footage. It took one of their guys hours to perfect that high-speed 180. I also love, love the rocket contrails. I hope to get my single player hands on impressions up later today. Check back.

The rocket trail is actually kind of weird. The rocket appears to travel in a straight path, but the contrail does a cool-looking corkscrew contrail. It would seem like the rocket would have to be traveling in the same fashion to not contradict the contrail.
But I'm being overly-critical. The trailer is awesome, and the game looks awesome.
Sorry to double post (or maybe not), but by "70 percent of the video was actual gameplay footage," do they mean that 70 percent was taken from gameplay and the other 30 percent from in-game cinematics, like when you get missions and such? Just trying to clarify.
It's great that it was in game, but I wanna see what it actually looks like to play the game. Perspective, HUD etc. etc. Will they release anything showing someone playing the game before the release?
@ShaneO83:
Do you really need that in order to make a decision? This is GTA we're talking about...you already know they produce quality.
@ShaneO83: @PhilESkyline: I agree that I'm going to buy this regardless. It's GTA, they're Rockstar, they know what they're doing. I trust it will be an excellent game.
Having said that, I too would like to see just what the HUD will look like (will we finally get a speed-o-meter when driving cars?).
Yeah, they all look like cutscenes to me. Nothing is in first or third person view but most things are like a reverse third person view....
@ShaneO83:
The Hud... is in your mind.
@PhilESkyline: I don't know if its a necessity, but whenever I'm checking out a new game, I try to find videos of actual gameplay by someone else, whether on youtube or elsewhere. Too many times have I been snatched by "in-game" footage only to find out that it wasn't a game that I wanted anything to do with. An example of this is the recent trailer for Tom Clancy's EndWar. The "in-game" footage was useless for telling me exactly what type of game it is. I still really don't know (haven't seen anything but that trailer). RTS? FPS? It matters.
To me, it's like the difference between reading the package on a box of food, and having a taste sample. You might be able to get a good idea from the picture and ingredients what it tastes like, but since my entire goal is to get something tasty to eat, i'd really like to, as authentically as possible, try to see what it's like.
Some things they didn't mention (in relation to the 3rd trailer):
The man holding the saw behind Niko is the same person with the same saw from the 3rd trailer where Niko and Roman are tied up while he demands to know, "Who are you working for!?"
Also, in the still images analysis, the image of "consoling a friend" shows Niko with the same person that slaps his face (while tied up in a chair - presumably from the aforementioned scene), and then later begs him to, "Stop shooting people, you maniac!"
Sure, all of the characters were in previous trailers, but I thought the new scenes directly related to those from the 3rd trailer and could merit being pointed out.
@jay427: Just because it's taken from gameplay doesn't mean the camera has to be situated where it will when you play the game.
Click.
STOP!
Ok.
How old are you?
99 years young.
Proceed.
Thank you. Interesting analysis. I thought the smoke trail looked right. Not that I've ever seen a rocket in action, but from the movies...you know...they've done that. They didn't really point out unseen things in the trailer the way Gametrailers previously did with an older trailer. The only thing I missed the first time through was that it was the Bank of America.
Also a bit off topic, but IGN Xbox 360 is going to have part one of a massive GTAIV interview up today with Dan Houser.
@Bluecell: *Bank of Liberty*
Idiot.
I'm nitpicking, but rockets don't leave "contrails". They just leave exhaust. A contrail is a trail of ice crystals; rocket exhaust is a trail of smoke.
@jay427: It's gameplay. In every 3D GTA game so far, the dev builds have been created with a detachable camera. The camera can be wherever Rockstar wants it to be.
No, if you want to be as nitpicky as I just was up above, it's not gameplay as you're going to see it while playing, but it is gameplay as in somebody is playing the game and the graphics are being rendered in-game.
btw, you'd be surprised at the way these videos are made. There's not nearly as much manipulation as some people think. It is literally hours and hours of trial and error to get the scene to go exactly as you want. Whoever's recording it is playing through it the same way you would.
@Bluecell: I was thiiiiiiis close to ganging up on you about calling that guy an idiot. And well...looks like I'm the idiot.
So help me god there had better be southpaw and legacy controls in this game.
@badasscat: I learn something new everyday.
its amazing that people can get paid for "analyzing" a game trailer.
I love the "falling down the stairs" scene. I was afraid that the ragdolls would be weightless, a la HL2.
@Gadgetron: I'm quite sure that their jobs consist of more than that.
this just blew my mind
If I can convince my wife to let me purchase a next-gen console, I will do so just for this one game.
Really, an analysis of a trailer? That is dumb... talk about the hype machine at work.
Need multi-player footage.. agh!
@NecronomiconUK: Multiplayer embargo is lifted in about two weeks.
@mgy:
But did you see the 180 in the Lambo...yes I know you did lol. It's a purchase without a doubt. Hoping for a midnight release and a call out from work the following morning lol.
Is it just me, or is Game Video's impeded vids horribly slow to load? Every single time I try, it takes almost half an hour to get five minutes of video loaded.
Did anyone else see the wanted picture of Niko's face on the newspaper as it exploded?
they should have shown the names of the vehicles... one looked like a bobcat, one was a huntley, and of course, the sanchez. was that the bansee getting chased in the airport? i think the Lambo was the infernus, or jester. idk, i play GTA too much, i know that. lol.
liked the part where he smashed through the barriers and cops to go to Bohan. my god that was some great graphics right there.
@Bluecell: Really? Bollocks :-(
I swear i was trying to hold myself but i think i will get a 360 for this game o_0
Ahhhhh...!* :O
*(the sound Jim Carrey makes at the diner in Bruce Almighty when he slides the sugar across the table using telekinesis.)
@Bluecell: I'm also 99 years old !!!
I'm also confused. Wait, this was original for the PS platform and now its going 360 only or delayed for PS3?
@SigmundTheSeaMonster: simultaneous release, iirc
OK...
Am I the only person that has trouble with Gamevideos.com?
I can stream a High-Def video from Gametrailers.com and it starts playing uninterrupted within about 10 seconds of opening the page...
Gamevideos.com... every video I've ever tried to watch on that site was Low-Def, and it'll play about 10 seconds of the video, then load for about 30 to 45 seconds, then play another 10 seconds, then load for 45 seconds... etc...
I've been trying to watch this video for the last 5 or 6 minutes, it's stuck around 25% ... loading indefinitely...
*hopes someone uploads to Gametrailers.com*
@SigmundTheSeaMonster: simultaneous release, but 360 has 2 exclusive downloadable episodes (think Vice city stories)
@Nside: I have the same problem all the time. Try downloading the full video on their site. It's faster :-/
That wasn't an appraiser. Looked like a deacon or some sort of church official inspecting a gem in a church.
Are they retarded? There all cut scenes...uh there prerendered. Although close to looking like whats in game its still prerendered. Half of what they say doesn't make sense. If you need someone who knows what there talking about working for you guys volomon@gmail.com
If you want someone working for you that's completely clueless: volomon@gmail.com
@Volomon: hey fool, GTA hasnt had a prerendered cutscene or uncut scene or any kind of scene since GTA 1 and 2. And those were FMVs so I'm not sure that even counts.
I can't believe they didn't call the 'Heat' references in the bank robbery. I got a chubber when I saw that scene.
Huge street shootout + useful cover system + pretty awesome looking graphics/physics/particles is surely going to kick some major ass?
the only problem I had with that video was...that dudes lisp!!
if that Lamborghini 180 is real in game action, i know what ill be doing most of the time in the LC, tearing up the streets with Lamborghini's
Did anyone notice that in half of the scenes Niko has an scar over his left eyebrow and in the others he doesn't? I'm guessing that it will be a big part in the story when it happens and maybe we could tell what parts in the trailer are pre-scar or post-scar. Example is the man slapping Niko, if Niko is consoling him before he has the scar and after he has the scar we could tell something went sour in their relationship. But I could be wrong, and that Niko had a scar in all those scenes and I just couldn't tell.
@Herbal23:
theres a reason no one knows ANYTHING about the 2 exclusive episodes...
microsoft wants EVERYONE to imagine these elaborate episodes that suit their gameplay style exactly...
..that way, anyone with both a 360 and ps3 will feel compelled to get the 360 version.
then when the episodes are explained, a large portion of those who got the 360 version MAY realize they don't want those episodes anyways, but microsoft already won by getting you to buy their version.
personally, i destest that kind of a thing. i actually resent rockstar as well, for accepting a deal that makes one version of the game seem less complete than the other, and then having the balls to sell it to us at full price, etc, with no apology or anything.
i mean, an exclusive is one thing... because no one is spending money to buy an inferior product, etc. but in the end, whatever. i'm still buying the game because i love gta that much.
@joelface: yeah, the reason being that they haven't even made them yet.
Awesome analysis! Pointed out a lot of stuff I missed. This game will rule the free world! Now, which console should I get, 360 or PS3? I'm so torn...
@TheHun: Actually, they have (for the most part), they just aren't talking about them.
@joelface:
Why shouldn't they charge full price for both versions? You're still getting the same game in the package. It's not like 360 owners will be getting the downloadable content for free. They have to pay for it.
@Randroid:
I have the feeling that a guy wearing a yarmulke is more likely to just be jewish than any sort of church official.
@PapaBear434:
You're not alone. I can only load the video about halfway before Kotaku does it's auto reload and I lose the lot.
Screw it. I'll just wait 30 more days.
@Koztah: Possibly. Depends on his relegious affiliation.
