Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness comes out this spring, and while Xbox 360 just have to worry about when to download the game, PC, Linux, and Mac users have other worries. How much is this game going to cost me? Is my computer powerful enough to run this monster? Will I be able to perform a Hyper Ultra Extra Combo Extreme? Fortunately the latest press release from Hothead Games answers the first two questions, announcing a price of $19.95 and some relatively modest system specifications located after the jump. As for the third question, just check out the latest screenshots to catch a glimpse of the mystical H.U.E.C.E.. Magnificent, I say!

Going for the Blizzard approach with system requirements I see. Making a game accessable rather than technical.
Very, very nice, PA. I applaud you, and will buy your game.
very stoked for this.
Really am looking foward to this game.
I do hope that Twisp and Catsby will be playable characters in terms of party members. ;D
I hope they put this milkshake on Steam. I'll be the first to drink it up.
This looks amazing, and if it has the same writing as PA does (i.e. by Tycho) then it's gonna be hilarious. I love Paper Mario-style RPGs.
But what do I need for it to run on my 360?
@Witzbold: What about classics like Div, Chuck, and Jesus?
I'm constantly impressed by what seems to be a very elaborate character creation system. This is a sure-buy for me! :D
Even though I don't like turn based RPGs, I'll still get this.
Lalala! So happy! It's coming, it's coming.
*Dances in a field of flowers*
I could not be more excited.
@Erwin: What about Ann, Galahad, Frank, the Cardboard Tube Samurai, The Customer Service Bot, and Jim?
On a side note, is anybody else's commenting acting wonky?
They should totally send this game to the XBLA. I think in episodes it could be wedged under the size limit.
Or hell. Throw em all on the PS3. Either way, if this turns out to be a great RPG, it needs a console/handheld release.
"this spring on these platforms and via Xbox LIVE® Arcade"
I knew my idea to have it on the xbla sounded very plausable for a reason.
*facepalm*
Read the whole thing next time Kayce.
Hmm, now this begs the question of 360 or PC?
This is something I can play, with recommended specs even. For once, not a power hog.Now doubt Gabe and Tycho did this intentionally, and I think it will pay off.
Score on the low system requirements. I can't wait for this!
@Aethyr: Brawl. Add me.: Tycho did a lot of the writing for this, so it's guaranteed to be golden.
@Aethyr: Brawl. Add me.: Tycho's definitely doing the writing, although I'm not sure if he's doing it all himself or if Ron Gilbert of Monkey Island fame is helping him with it.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this, my only concern is whether to get it for my laptop or on XBLA.
I'm definitely not going to play a game based on a boring web comic.
Annarchy is in it, what more does it need?
@Komrade_Kayce:
Ah the powers of art direction over technical smoke-and-mirrors!
When I found out that it was semi-real-time-turn-based, I was kinda shocked. Since most of the screenies before suggested it was a straight-up beat-em-up.
But once I saw the system in action, I loved having all the activity going along in the interface. It's hectic, yet tactical, I love it!
Prolly getting this for PC though. I can't imagine reacting fast enough using a gamepad and not the good ol' mouse-keyboard!
@Stormrider: From what I understand (read: Heard on podcasts/read online) Jerry wrote damn near every single word of the thing, including item tooltips.
Ron's role included almost no writing, rather, he helped turn Jerry's storyline into something less novel-y and more game-y. (Which, I imagine, is far more complicated than it sounds.)
@Clarke: So, was it good? The contrarian orgasm?
I must say I enjoy the amount of chops this game employs. Will probably pick it up just because it's PA. And if it sucks call them (tycho) hypocrites on all they they stand for.
Want it. But don't want to buy a new compy to do it. Sadly, my MacBook is not gaming ready. But... Maybe when I pick up my X360 once all the bad apples are knocked out.
I may end up getting this game just for the humour. I'm not really into turn-based combat...it will be a close call. I'll probably buy it at a later time when it is even cheaper.
This is going to be really great - I truly cannot wait.
Finally.. a game that I can run on my 4 year old PC!
@2NinjasTapedTogether: Your MacBook can easily run it. Even my 4-year old Powerbook will.
I sure hope the writing is more old-school Penny Arcade, rather than new-school, funny-once-a-month-or-so....
It's so frugal even I can afford it! And if my computer can't run it because of all the stupid manga I got from Johnny, then my girlfriend's computer certainly can!
Double yay!
Good to see it's on the cheap side. And the system specs are awesome. Finally, a new PC game I can actually play at good settings...
Now all Im wondering is if I'll be able to install the game on my Macbook and XP desktop with only one purchase.
I guess I'll get it now it's coming to Linux.
I'm going to PAX too, which I'll surely regret. It might be best to just walk in for an hour and leave, since I'm sure it'll be full of fanboys. All I can say is that NCSoft better have PS3 demos or I wasted $40. I might go to sakuracon this weekend too just to have something to do... and in that case I'll walk out due to annoying furries no doubt. So far none of the shows in town have been very interesting.
The Sam and Max approach to system requirements - ie make sure that people can actually play it. Combine that with the game style - adventure meets RPG - and this is a must buy for me.
Someone needs to make a Kotaku-based video game.
Here's my pitch:
Genre: RPG/ 3rd Person shooter/ -insert whatever is popular with the kids these days-
Kotaku tower is hit one day by a mysterious blast(!!). Brian Crecente wakes up to find everything destroyed and all the other Kotaku workers missing. There's a message on the monitor explaining the circumstances and how to save one of the members (other clues are left after saving each of them). The Kotaku members all help Brian by giving him power (~magical powers~) by commenting positive/original/intelligent comments. Then there are those idiots that give idiotic comments (FIRST!!!!!) which slowly drains Crecente and his team's power (At the beginning, there are more idiots than good). They would have been banned, but Witzbold has become a brainwashed zombie and with his hammer of destruction, works for the evil that has destroyed Kotaku tower.
Then there are other brainwashed members that are well distinguished on Kotaku (irishninja, papabear, etc) and Brian along with his team must fight them in order to return them back to normal.
Will Brian save Kotaku? Or will he fail against the evil?!!!
**SPOILERS**
- Cute cats are everyone's weakness
- Jack Thompson is a secret team member
- Phil is a boss that'll throw blackballs at you
- Witzbold's hammer is epic
- One of the Kotaku members will DIE (T-T)
- The evil boss is Crecente's twin (this will forever haunt you Brain ;p) [kotaku.com]
@goldwings: A Kotaku game, huh? That reminds me; is it me or do the names "Crecente" and "De Marco" sound an awful lot like Spanish pirate names?
sellouts.
@goldwings:
1. Can you defeat Phil with gum?
2. Can the soon to be corpse be an intern?
3. Can Prinnies become zombies?
4. If poison can't kill Crecente 2, what will?
5. Is Multi-Tap the Limit Break?
Linux too! Sweet! Perfect for laptop travels and quick gaming during boring meetings.
@Mongoosekun: THat's right, you're better than everybody else at the conventions and I'm sure they'll be really lucky to have you there. Mr. Popular.
@npa190: With the amopunt of thought it took you to type that, you could have imagined a grape or something.
@2NinjasTapedTogether: Did you even read the system requirements? All the current gen and older gen Macs will run this perfectly fine... *poke*
@eastx:
I think a pea would be more within his range =/
I wish they Had and Hadn't made this game... I also wish they had finally gave their characters voices. I understand their decision not to, and that it would probably kill the image some people have already self developed for them. But, that is what voice acting auditions are for.. No one thought Mario would sound like he does now, back in the day, But it really does suit him. And by something as simple as giving their creations a voice could propel them to bigger and greater things. On another note, I guess the basic RPG sytem type play is to be expected. I'm not too into that genre (but thats just me, don't pay any attention to that). But it would have been fun to play this game and giggle at "here & there" puns they'll definitely have, without having to read a speech bubble.. But I'm only one man, one opinion. What does that matter?.
So does this mean that the 360 file size limit of 150 megs will finally be tossed out?
You know what's sad, neither of my 2 computers could run this, but my wife's laptop could. God I need to upgrade.
Big ups to the developer for getting this to run on G5 Macs, I haven't upgraded my computer in a while and didn't think I'd be able to enjoy the game. Nice work!
Why's it rated M for Mature? Lots of blood and violence? Language? Sexual stuff? I hope not.
My love for Penny Arcade has waned considerably over the last few months, but I think I'll still check it out, if it really does hit XBLA in Spring. Hopefully it's early Spring and not late Spring.
Yes! My crappy 64 MB Mobility Radeon 9600 quietly sneaks under the gate!
I'm in!
@dawimp523: they are well-known for throwing the f-bomb around in their comics. i'm sure the same holds true for their game.
looks like i'm not in the minority when i say i'll be picking this up day one on XBL!
This is my most anticipated game of 2008. That is all.
I wonder when this game is coming out in Europe.
I applaud their use of branded power-ups ala Bioshock.
This game is looking so awesome now... I was worried when the first screens hit but no longer have the ph33r
@Mongoosekun: Don't try to have TOO much fun now. That would just be darn right unethical.
PA mentioned that they were having release date issues with because the game was going to be sandwiched between two potentially huge titles. All of that leaves one to speculate...
Is this going to be released in early to mid May? It seemed like it was hinting between GTA IV and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed*.
*This was mentioned back when The Force Unleashed was due out in May.
Hm... should I buy it on the 360 for the achievements, or on PC for the superior controls and resolution?
I'm just wondering, but if this weren't created by the Penny Arcade people, would it get half the amount of praise it has based solely on it's gameplay merits?
@lazyartist:
Sure. Good gameplay+turn based rpg+humour is a win in my books. Just look at Earthbound, one of my favourite games of all time.
@eastx:
I'm just too old to put up with much screaming and annoying behavior for more than maybe an hour. It's the same reason I quit going to the theater.
@Komrade_Kayce: Good points =]
@Mongoosekun: I find fanboys annoying in general too, but the social aspect is one of the biggest parts of a convention. It is people convening, after all. Still, even if you don't expect to make any friends there (aww), it's best not to be holier-than-thou about it.
Ugh. Red noses.
@Dag: This is an RPG, not an FPS, so doubt that the mouse+keyboard combo has many advantages. Actually, from the videos, there are instances where you have to repeatedly slam on a key, which seems more suitable on a controller.
