Here I was thinking Dawn of War 2 would be officially unveiled next month. I totally overlooked the possibility that Belgian magazine PCGameplay would get the scoop a few weeks early, and be the first to get me all excited over yet another must-have PC RTS. First things first: Relic are bringing some of Company of Heroes' tricks over to the Warhammer universe, with units now able to occupy buildings and also use the same kind of pathfinding and cover AI as that found in CoH. Other important tidbits: both Marines and Orkz will be getting co-op campaigns (though other races will also feature), you'll need to take better care of your men (important squad leaders must be kept alive) and the environments will be almost completely destructable. Excited? Temper this awesomeness with news the game won't be with us until well into 2009.

Shouldn't it be Noon of War?
Im very excited, but then that all died when I saw "the game won't be with us until well into 2009."
D::::
Should be fun like the first series but WTB WH40K MMORPG! :)
Can't wait Can't wait!! will we finally get to see the tyranid?
Screw Starcraft 2, the real rts is coming now
Time for another WAAAAAAAAGH!
GLEE.
What's that about a six-squad max in the article? Sounds like a very different game from the original DoW.
Oh boy, can't wait! :)
The six-squad max thing worries me a bit. I'd need clarification: Do they mean six normal SM squads, or do they seriously mean you cannot have more than six infantry entities deployed at a time? That seems... odd. The first option makes perfect sense, from a geek standpoint. A Space Marine company typically contains six ordinary tactical squads, or alternatively, a typical game of 40k allows six troops selections. But what about Orks? They can't seriously limit me to only six mobs of boyz. Well, again, maybe only six basic ones, but specials have to not count.
Then again, I'm still thinking from the original game's base. I'm thinking of this more as a big patch than a sequel, which is probably the wrong mindset. Hell, maybe they're going to totally dispense with bases, have more of a "strike-team" feel than that completely contrived feel typified by armies building and defending field bases for absolutely no reason.
@Moonshadow101: Ummm I believe it's you can now select up to 6 squads at a time to control at once.
@Moonshadow101: OK, sorry, I've written that a little confusingly. Mag says you can control up to six squads.
@Kyle81: The link says "control." I'm assumed that means "have," because imposing a selection limit is like an console FPS deciding that only using the D-pad and two face buttons is the way of the future.
I enjoy CoH and all, but personally sometimes it feels a little too micro-focused. Not to mention the game still has a lot of balance problems (though the recent patch certainly helps quite a bit). Personally, once Starcraft 2 comes out, I won't be playing any other RTSes for a long time.
The only concern I have is whether or not they'll be keeping every race up until now in the game, I'd hate to think they'd drop some of them.
For those interested, here's the full artwork of the article pic. It was made for a comic book cover:

More importantly, though, I found some SCANS, and the screenshots look freakin' sweet (hint: remember how the first DoW intro movie looked?)

It's Orks, not Orkz. Though Orks might very well add a z for extra orciness.
SO WANT.
Oh snap I missed this earlier:
+ Watch video
@ggodo: Brunch of War?
Pretty goddamned excited to see what they do with this.
TYRANIDS PLEASE.
Tyranids FTW!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
OMG!!! THOSE GUNS ARZ RIP OFFZZ OF THE GUNS FROM STARCRAFT 2!!!
Thought I would say it before some other idoit says it. But damn that all sounds amazing I just hope there is more unit cuztimization ie actually play as a chaos army who worships Nurgle
I still want a 40k Epic RTS or turn-based game. :(
But this news still makes me :)
I wouldn't be surprised to see the Tyranids not make it on DoW2. They will need something for it's first major expansion.
But we need nids, they need nids or else it's going to lose more people to Starcraft 2.
I just really want to kill frigging Genestealers, I fail terribly at killing the sods in Spacehulk. Still, I'm loving this bring on the DoW!
Fewer squads with more customization hearkens back to the early days of 40K. I like it. Tyranids, especially if they do a few Space Hulk-type scenarios, would be the shizznit. My guess is they would be an expansion all their own.
All I want to know about this game, and the deciding factor to my possible purchase of it is: "Will I be able to play Tyranids?"
Give me tyranids of DOW2 can go fuck itself.
Afternoon of war.
STraight up, DOW and its expansions are collectively the only RTS game i've really loved, rather than merely respected. It's never left my HD, and i play it regularly. There's something flat out appealing about the lore and the spectacle of it.
Now with all the expansions the thing has god knows how many maps and 9(!) races that actually balance out pretty good. That's a major feat.
I hope they aren't intending to bring all those races to DoW 2 as well, and if they are, there better be Tyranids. There are some really oddball army decisions in DoW, like the Dark Eldar? You have everything and the kitchen sink, but you left out the faucet and put a phone in there instead. It's so strange.
I was told the excuse used to be "the engine couldn't handle the Tyranids", which makes no sense considering the OCEAN of troops the Orks can field. Traditionally, Orks are more numerous than Tyranids, so what gives?
Personally i think it may have to do with the Tyranids being such a heavily melee focused army, and so many tactics of DoW being based on ranged combat, i think Tyranids simply wouldn't be that fun to play with or against. So here's hoping DoW2 does some big updates to close combat.
Saying the screens come close to the DoW vanilla intro is fucking backwards. It definitely looks like a slightly prettier DoW, but it's no HOLY SHIT WOW APOCALYPSE.
@Sunjammer: Looks alot better to me.
@Zamzoph: That's Damnation Crusade by Boom! studios. It's a great series, half of it written by Abnett.
@Sunjammer: The Tyranids definiltey have big bone swords and scything talons but are far from just "melee centric." In fact I'd say the Orks are far more cqc based than tyranids. Their shooting stats suck, hard. But, if you have a mob of boyz with big enough choppaz they can screw up a loooot of armies. The tryanids have termagaunts, biovores, venom cannons, barbed strangellers, etc.
DoW isn't shooting based, it depends on the army. The Tau? Now they're definitely gun based. Otherwise, it's a fine mix between guns and cqc.
I think what they meant by the engine not doing Tyranids justice was the individual character models. DoW graphics are alight, but if they felt it couldn't render a proper Hive Tyrant in all it's glory, well I'd rather just not play as them untill doW 2. If they don't include Tyranids (simply because it's the last race they have left to do, and fans are literally screaming for them) they'd be making a huge mistake.
I'm gonna predict that we'll see Genestealers in DoW2 proper, as a teaser to the first expansion, kind of like Guard in DoW, and Necrons in... was it Winter Assault?
There's absolutely no way that Tyranids won't show up in DoW2 or an expansion, and I want some interior Space Hulk-like levels.
I really liked Dawn of War, right up until Dark Crusade. I enjoyed Dark Crusade, but the singleplayer was kinda flat, I thought. It felt a lot like I was playing some kind of multiplayer mode based on Risk except with AI and not people. Call me a stickler for tradition, but I rather like standard mission-based structures to RTS games.
And I'm not coming back to Dawn of War until I see 'Nids, and lots of 'em =D
It is gonna be dx10, and support multi core cpu. Like the 1st DOW, got me to buy a gaming PC. I think this DOW2 will be the game to get me to buy a new quad core, 3 SLI NVIDIA or possibly a quad CROSSFIRE ATI gaming rig PC. Better start saving now--lol
