Sony Computer Entertainment notified some of its customers today, warning them that there may be the "possibility of unauthorized access to personal information" via the PlayStation Store for PCs. According to the consumer alert on PlayStation.com, "passwords of a small percentage of PLAYSTATION Network users may have been changed through unauthorized access, making it possible to view users' personal information and/or use the Wallet for the PLAYSTATION Store."
The company recommends that PSN users log in to verify that their passwords have not been altered.
In the notice to customers, SCEA recommends that those who notice "irregularities" with their accounts get in touch with Consumer Services at 877-971-7669.
Notice to PLAYSTATION®Network Users [PlayStation.com - thanks, William!]

interesting, very interesting
"warning them that THERE may be..." come on MW get it together man =p
Still as with all PC things this was bound to happen sooner or later. You can't keep good hackers away
I think Michael has been compromised.
isn't xbox live network bad enough to trip the information and losing account work.
Well this is just ducky, because I've been having connection problems with logging in ever since the last firmware. I've been ABLE to, just sporadically.
@ dexterr,
Wut?
@Maldron: Whelp, that said, I guess I'm okay for now.
Hmm, this could be bad.
WTF. not acceptable sony. NOT FUCKING ACCEPTABLE.
this happened at my bank recently too.. and that was pretty scary too, i'll admit.
THIS JUST IN! AN UNNAMED SOURCE WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE A HOMELESS PERSON OUTSIDE K-MART JUST LEAKED THAT XBOX LIVE ACCOUNT USERS WILL BE RECIEIVING A CHANCE OF HAVING THEIR ACCOUNTS COMPROMISED 12-16 MONTHS AFTER THE PLAY STATION NETWORK VERSION!!
RUMOR CONFIRMED!
@TheModernDaySinner:
A time traveler who wishes to remain anonymous confirmed it on my end, too.
@SuperMaxZero: Oh no! My secret pin number! ((1077))
Somehow this comical image comes to mind:
Inbox email.
"M$ HOW DO U DO THIS SECURETEE THING SRSLY HEALP LOL."
April's Fool, or is it too early for that?! :P
Somebody needs to tell Agent Hunt that there are easier ways to get Super Stardust HD.
I thought this was a US only problem, but it's on the Japanese site as well, and most likely all the others [www.jp.playstation.com]
Just don't use public PC's for acces the PSN store
Skynet is active! Its just seeding its profile database now, better watch out!
UH-OH!
Question, did anyone else get this email, i was a little unsure if it was legit as it was asking to link to my PSN account.

@GFX-187: Never got that e-mail, that site will steal your password. Stay the fuck away from it, that's standard phishing fare.
My suggestion would always be to go to the official Playstation site and read what it says there. But I've received NO such e-mail, and I too post on the Playstation Boards.
@Sparx: My family has been shamed by my use of "their."
Just checked. I'm clear, and good to go.
@joelface:
It's never acceptable, but it's not something that companies plan. Also, compromises happen every single day at banks (I work at one). Scary stuff alright, and it's getting weirder each year.
*ding*

So this is only for the PC PS store dont' know.
@GFX-187: OMG...I got that E-Mail as well. Do you think it has something to do with the fact that I'm in the US and made a EU account anyways even though the options weren't there for a US account setup? Oh well I didn't link my account so I guess it is lost now. I really just wanted to get Demos and crap that didn't make it to the US or JP.
@JorgieX: im going no where near their link especially when my PSN account is concerned. anyway theres always other forums i can visit.
OH CRAP! I must quickly log on to my account, enter in my password, and go try to play Army of Two online! What...it doesn't work? Oh wait.
Tom Cruise is in ur PS3
I'm not going to rip on Sony for this, because almost any company that has ever had account numbers stored on a server has been compromised at least once. Even those that are dedicated to nothing BUT account numbers and transfers (Bank of America, PayPal, WaMu Bank...) Even XBL has been breached, however briefly, a time or two.
Shit happens, it sucks, but at least they caught it and are getting people informed about it.
@Majorasblaze likes to dance dance dance yeah:
I find the prospect of Tom Cruise in my home in any capacity much scarier than any account intrusion.
/my couch would never be the same
Kotaku, I love you guys, but your site's system needs a serious overhaul. This disappearing posts thing needs to be fixed. I am all but driven to given up on posting on this site at this point.
@joelface: @Covert_Knight: @TheModernDaySinner: It seems everybody forgot that MS had a security leak a few months ago.
This is more Sony proving PSN is just as good as Xbox Live at being compromised.
@Polywhirl:
YES! Equality at last!
I checked mine, everything is fine.
@PapaBear434: I don't know about being breached but I know people were tricked into giving out their info.
@Polywhirl: see message: okenny :)
I'm sure this is reactionary on most peoples part as Xbox LIVE has become some kinda benchmark but this kind of stuff shouldn't have to happen regardless of where it may or may not have happened.
@okenny :): @okenny :): [kotaku.com]
It's largely the same situation. We have no statement from Sony claiming they were hacked. That means it's probably the same exact thing that happened to Live.
Either way, it sucks.
@Polywhirl: Well the issue you referred to for Xbox live has been resolved as what I stated earlier. People should log in and check their PSN account even if they haven't been duped into giving up their user information. This problem, from the description, suggests that this issue is a little more out of the user's control (I'm speculating now) and may be more then a simple phishing scam. I thinking something happened internally... maybe an employee stole something. It really does suck.
@TheModernDaySinner: no more fucking caps for you.
---
Hmmm I guess its time to check my PSN account. Granted I forgot what my friggin pw is.
Can it get any worse for Sony right now?
@Polywhirl:
I dont think XBL was breached. It was a case of social engineering. IE the human was the weakpoint in the encryption (being support staff, or the user themselves)
Id guess the same is true here. Social engineering broke the system, not hackers.
