Their are no lack of options when it comes to Tetris freeware clones, but this one, well it has a pair of worthwhile twists, its psychedelic presentation notwithstanding. Tetroid 2012 plays with the formula by adding other familiar block-busting elements, including an inverted play field that turns the mechanic on its head, switching to Arkanoid/Breakout style play. A fantastic concept. Add to that the soundtrack which features a collection of 21 electronic artists and you'd be a fool to pass up the download. More details and download links at Simon's blog.

Hmmm, pretty nifty. Downloading...
Kinda cool, but I wouldn't recommend playing it on the 21st of December.
@Spiffyness: HOLY CRAP! Why such a big file?
Whoa. That looks sweet. I shall download.
why's it look like it's underwater?
Looks really cool reminds me of meteos for some reason
That looks kewl, I will check it out
Neat. Needed more video sample. Will download when I get back to my own machine.
Looks awesome, downloading right now, can't wait to give it a try.
I needed a Tetris game for my PC. I disliked others I have played.
now this I would like for XBLA
@JakeDunn: Don't say that! There's already a Tetris for XBLA. People who buy that shit are the reason we have 30 chess games on there.
Holy crap that looks amazing. Downloading.
@NotAZombie: Why?
This tetris is unique and interesting... moreso then others.
I personally would like it on XBLA, that would be great.
Just played a bit... It's an interesting and fun concept, but goddamn it sure hurts my eyes. Unfortunately the "focus in and out" shader causes your pupils to continually refocus to the point that you'll suffer pain from straining so much. Beware!
And I normally never feel sick playing games. Ugh. Still though, kudos to the interesting mashup of gaming.
isn't that a Telefon Tel Aviv song playing on the video?
@Kaemon: You know why I wouldn't like it right now on XBLA? I can play it on my computer, for free.
This somehow reminds me of ROM CHECK FAIL.
Erm...Tetris with a slight twist. Greeeaaaaat....
(Meh)
Wow... awesome presentation... love the blurs and static and overall unsettling atmosphere.
So it is named Tetroid 2012 and it has 21 electronic artists?
December 21st, 2012 anyone?
Hmm.
INFO: Recommened that player takes ecstasy while engaging in Tetris experience. Pills not included.
Runs like crap on my "monster" PC!
they should've put a scrolling line a la Lumines with group destroying. That would be totally rad.
This gave me a headache like whoa.
Boring!
Lots of cool concepts, but making it seem like I'm drunk when I start doing well is not nice. Mr. Driller coming to save the day is something that should be in every tetris game though. Oh and the music was pretty terrible. It was kind of cool picking out the original tetris music from the really abstract techno stuff, but it wasn't enough.
It hurt my eyes and it was the scariest Tetris game I've ever played. It would be better if you didnt have to play for what seemed like 10 minutes to get to better gameplay. But, the scary part, yeah felt like the entire time I was hearing the ambient noise of some horror film.
The background reminds me of a crappier looking program of the trippy classic PC program "AcidWarp." Also, I'm thinking if those seizure warnings that are in all game booklets have any truth to them, this is the game to prove it!
Jesus, why is the file so big for just a tetris variant?
Well, I'm impressed. I really am. And not just by the file size.
The gameplay looks interesting, but the electronica might not warrant a download for some people, and although a figure of speech, calling them fools is unnecessary. Nothing irks me more in a game post/review than someone's thoughts on the music, especially if it's a popular genre. If it's ambient or orchestral, I don't mind it, but I hate being pushed a type of music rather than trying to enjoy it for myself. There are some exceptions, of course, but they are few and far in between.
@ForgotMyKeys: And some folks find the damndest things to complain about. Like you said yourself, it's a figure of speech; moreover, McWhertor's particular use of the phrase is making a broad general statement about the game's presentation--i.e., he's praising the quality of the game, and not calling anyone a "fool" because they might not necessarily like electronic music. Could the average reader infer that McWhertor likes various types of electronic music, and therefore enjoys the soundtrack? Yes, probably. But it takes a whole different breed to imply that he's trying to push his opinion on you.
All that said: fuck you, McWhertor. Now I've got a headache the size of goddamn Texas. The game is great fun--until your eyes start bleeding. Urk.
You owe me some internet aspirin :)
Thats Something i would most definitely Play I love both tetris and Arkanoid so I'm set when it comes to this game! Now what Patform is this on that might just be my issues.
I liked it, but it lacks a way of trowing the pieces immediately to the bottom (like pressing up on tetris ds) So I found it boring.. i read like two books waiting for a piece to fall down (yeah, I have short attention span, so what?)
@JustThisGuy: I have nothing against McWhertor or his choice of music, I happen to like some electronica. It's obvious he's not calling anyone a fool for not liking electronic music. And I realize he's not trying to push it either. My statement was general as well regarding the issue. I actually had a GameSpot review in mind, and perhaps I poorly used this post as a vehicle for my rant, but my personal preference still stands that reviewers should generally abstain from commenting on the choice of popular music in video games. You seem like an intelligent guy and rather than insulting me, you could have criticized my rant.
huh...I just tried playing it, and the control system is messed up. it's like the UP is being held down and you can't move anything. anyone having a similar problem?
