Research: PS3 To Drive Blu-ray Market, Sell 13 Million Consoles By End Of '08

New research from analysts at Strategy Analytics says that the Blu-ray equipped PlayStation 3 will drive adoption of the format into 2009, with 29 million homes expected to have at least one player by the end of the year, 13 million of those from console sales. The report goes on to predict that standalone players will lead the charge at some point in 2009, with 132 million homes Blu-ray capable by 2012. That factors in PCs, dedicated players and consoles.

Authors David Mercer and Peter King write that Europe will be the largest market for Blu-ray players—they do love their PlayStations—with the US and Japan placing and showing.

I just got No Country For Old Men on Blu-ray in the mail from Netflix, which is also probably not that interesting unless you're getting Blu-ray royalties. Or you're a stalker.

  • 13 million consoles total, or 13 million consoles in 2008? I'm not clear on that since wasn't it said that the PS3 was at something like 10.5 million as of febuary?

  • 13 million WTF??
The PS3 is at 10 million today, it'll sell much more than 3 million by end of year.

@Part-Time-Viking: Yeah if it's not 13 million in this year those would be abysmal sales.

  • And I just recently bought my first blu-ray. "I am Legend" $18.95 at Amazon.

Hmm, this may be weird, but I STILL don't have a Blu Ray movie. Hmm, I should get on the ball with that. Have a PS3, HDTV, yet not a single flick. -_-

  • Image of Candlejack Candlejack at 03:54 PM on 03/26/08 *

Just 13 million? That seems too few. My estimates are another 3 million in the next 4 months, and another 3-4 until the end of this year. We should see a huge boost when MGS4 launches and when Killzone2/Resistance2/LBP are closing in.

  • I popped into zavvi today and asked about BD Live. Two words - Fucking oblivious!

Anyone here know of any BluRay movies that support it yet?

  • Yeah I'm confused too, either way doesn't seem plausible when you factor in that A) they probably won't double their console sales to date in the span on one year and B) with all the hit titles lined up for this year and early next year it will certainly sell more than a couple million.

  • @Nirolak: abysmal isn't the term I'd use... Extinct came to mind.

    @Magic Emperor Anima:

    You, sir = FAIL!

    XD

  • @Magic Emperor Anima: Is transformers available on Blu-ray yet?? that movie rocked!

Well its pretty obvious, if you consider the PS3 as a blu-ray player its price is fantastic

  • I love how these analysts follow the popular trends, one minute they are talking about the doom and gloom of Sony and the next they are singing their praises.

  • @Bearskopff: I was under the impression it was a "near-future" thing. As in the technology is now available but it might be a few months before movies start coming out with the functionality. Could be wrong though - I'm not a Zavvi employee ;)

  • strange.. i got an email from a company called Redbox. they rent out movies for a dollar a night. It was a survey about blu-ray. Would I rent blu-ray over dvd if availible, would I be willing to pay slightly more for blu-ray rentals. if blu-ray cost more to rent would i still prefer them to lower cost dvd rentals.. guess the format is really taking off.

  • No Country For Old Men was great, oy. And you all better watch it. Got it, Friendo?

  • Ahh analysts. Pointless creatures.

  • Haven't really jumped on the Blu Ray bandwagon yet. I've got a PS3, but only one Blu Ray movie (and it came with the PS3). The quality is definitely nice, but I have no interest in shelling out the kind of money it would take to maintain a hi-def movie collection. It's such a money sink, and in xx years when the next great format comes out, the cycle will start all over again. It will be more appealing when Blu Ray movies start going for budget DVD prices ;)

  • @excel_excel:

    Of course it is:

Unless you mean the Michael Bay movie, which isn't possible since you said "that movie rocked".

  • @Magic Emperor Anima:

Can't go wrong with Planet Earth, Ratatouille, Blade Runner, or No Country for Old Men. They're all great movies and their all fantastic bluray transfers with perfect picture and sound.

  • Additional 13 million just for the rest of the 2008 year.
They said they expect 29 million blu-ray players to be sold in 2008, and of the 29 million 13 million will be console sales in 2008.

    So, that would be 11.8 million PS3 (current) + 13 million PS3 (for 2008) = 25 million PS3 total sales.

  • Image of Saint Anima Saint Anima at 04:02 PM on 03/26/08 *

@Mr.SithNinja: Sheesh. Heh, well I obviously thought of the PS3 as a game system first rather than a Blu Ray player, so maybe I have the right set of mind as of what I want from the system.

@excel_excel: Hmm, I'll probably rent Transformers if it's on Blu Ray.

  • Enjoy "There Will Be Blood". It was a pretty fuckin awesome movie. Expect Javier whateverhisnameis to haunt your dreams with his crafty guns for the next week.

  • @Kazzahdrane: I heard there was one or two releases already. Not too fussed. I'm sure I can wait. I think I'm more surprised they had no idea what I was on about. Oh...and then I asked about PlayTV. According to them I have to import from America if I want it now. Ummm...how many things are wrong with that!?

  • @imaballa: That's what I'm thinking, but the report isn't too clear.

  • Image of Saint Anima Saint Anima at 04:04 PM on 03/26/08 *

@silkylove: Heard good things about No Country for Old Men. Ratatouile looks nice too, and would be a nice flick to watch with the missus. Yeah, time for me to pick up some movies.

  • I think it's 13 million more sales. That or they're being very pessimistic.

  • Just like the PS2 helped DVD along. Especially in Japan.

  • Just waiting till June for the MGS 80gig bundle then I will be buying one.

Honestly I dont care that much about B-Ray right now...probably in the future but for now its not the selling point for me.

  • @Magic Emperor Anima: "Heard good things about No Country for Old Men."

That just sounds like you saw the Academy Awards.

Yes, it's a great, different, slightly twisted movie. I can recomend it, for sure.

  • @Tye-The-Czar: Eh, it was ok. There were a couple of interesting moments, but as an action movie it lacked action and as a drama it lacked story. I was quite disappointed b/c I expected better than ok. Hopefully, There Will Be Blood actually lives up to the hype.

@greeble: That was another disappointing movie. I'm going to try streaming The Omega Man from Netflix at some point. I think there was a lot of potential w/the premise and I'm hoping the old version(Omega Man) is better.

  • @yashichi8bit:
Yeah, MGS is still by far the largest selling point the PS3 has for me. I'm not a big movie buff.

  • Image of Saint Anima Saint Anima at 04:13 PM on 03/26/08 *

@jesp3r: Actually, nah. Heard about it through people just talking about how good it was. I haven't seen the Academy Awards in a couple of years.

  • @Bearskopff: I believe the first BD Live disc is going to be Walk Hard.

@Magic Emperor Anima: If you have a nice sound system as well, Kingdom of Heaven is just jaw dropping on BD. Plus, it's the extended cut so there is actual character development. Also, the transfer on Unforgiven is just fantastic.

  • meh, i'm not a movie guy, i'd rather play games.

  • Quick question; when you go to the cinema, and watch a movie (the last one I saw was No Country for Old Men, excellent film, Go McWhertor), what kind of resolution is the film? Or isn't there a resolution, as it's on film? I have no idea, but was wondering whats the difference between Blu Ray plus HD TV and cinema quality...

  • @smitty1123: Nice one

  • @Magic Emperor Anima: i just got my first movie
I am Legend,(ps3 came with talladega nights) looks freakin awesome on Blu-ray.
    since im only getting:
    -mario kart wii
    -gta 4: LE
    -mgs4: LE

from now till june, i will be filling that void with more movies.

@DesmondHume: that would make more sense. they are at 10 mill mark, so 13 mill should be pretty good numbers.

  • I totally believe it... I want a Blu-Ray player now that HDDVD has failed... and its probably going to be a PS3 i'm getting... why not? right?

  • Eh... I just don't see it happening myself. Sure, Blu-ray might've won the format battle, but that doesn't mean that the PS3 is going to be the lowest priced Hi-Def player for all that long. In fact, I would bet that there's already standalones in the works now with a $325-289 or so dollar range being planned for the upcoming holidays. While it might spur sales of the PS3 from now into the later half of the year, I just believe that there's no doubt going to be some competition much sooner than 'some point in 2009'. Though maybe I'm just looking at it from a US prospective.

Then again, maybe the drop of value in the dollar has made it unlikely we'll see a big push for a lower price now, since what company really wants to try even harder to make less money? I would assume then, perhaps they aim for the Euro market.

  • @Spartan1308: Omega Man is fun if you dig 70s Heston flics (Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes, etc.). It's still a crappy adaptation of Matheson's book though. Probably the "most faithful" adaptation is Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price. It's good, but all three blow the ending.

  • @Magic Emperor Anima: you're not the only one (there's goes that argument that ps3 is only good as a movie player). Although, i am gonna pick up "I am Legend" on blu ray. i want to see that alternate ending.

  • @silkylove: Seconded on the planetearth set and bladerunner. Usualy when i'm watching a movie i've seen already, it's kinda like background noise. Watching bladerunner on blueray with a friend of mine, we couldn't pull away from the screen. I just meant to show him the intro so he could see the quality of the transfer, but we watched the whole thing. Furthermore, it's nice to finally see the version sir Scott intended without the studio mucking things up

  • @imaballa: Actually, the article says this:

"...with 29 million homes expected to have at least one player by the end of the year, 13 million of those from console sales."

That's not 29 million sold in 2008, that's 28 million in homes by the end of 2008, which counts Blu-Ray players already in homes. So I think they mean 13 millions PS3s sold total, not in just 2008.

  • @Krondonian: This link has some good info about your question. Short answer: Film is not the same since it isn't digital. Better answer:

    [filmschoolonline.com]

  • The main PS3 selling point BluRay wise is the fact it is currently the only one that is upgradeable via the net.
Thinking about it. Sony should really make a song and dance about that. Surely it would help with revenue.

  • You know, I could have sworn I saw a quote on this site from a Sony executive that said they projected by the time the PS4 went into production, they wouldn't even be using disc format. This story makes an allusion to it, but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

Anyway, why does anyone care about Blu-Ray if Sony themselves might be dumping discs? I knew back when the format war broke out that there was a potential for getting burned and honestly, my warning lights haven't turned off yet. I'm fine with my DVDs and digital downloads, thanks.

  • They only expect there to be 13 million PS3's by the end of 2008? That seems low. There are already nearly 11 million. So, in the first 1 and a quarter years they can pull off 11 million, but after that for the next 3/4 of a year they can only do 2 million? Just seems to me that there will be more than 13 million PS3's in people's homes by the end of this year.

  • @smitty1123: I Am Legend actually ended up reminding me of some basic parts of 28 Days Later, but just much more bland. I do enjoy the 70s Heston movies though. Heston is only in a couple of them, but I have the old Planet of the Apes collection. I've seen Soyent Green and it was pretty interesting to watch too. A lot of what's interesting about that one is just seeing what "futuristic" looked like to people in that time period.

"Nearly 30 million homes are expected to have some sort of Blu-ray device this year, whether it's the PS3, a PC drive, or a standalone player. PS3 is expected to drive the Blu-ray market until 2009..."

This means 30 million "with some sort of" BD device!

  • Yeah, that 13 million figure is a little strange. They must mean 13 million addional units in 2008, not total units. That seems a little high to me. Although, I'm sure holiday '08 the PS3 is going to sell like crazy with LBP, MGS4, R2, KZ2, and GTP all out on shelves, plus people many more people will be upgrading their home entertainment system to hi-def.

  • @exaggeration17a:
You can't find it because no Sony exe has said such a thing!

  • I don't really care about bluray (odd that a high definition format has 'blur' in its name...), but I'll get a PS3 the day they allow the European market to buy one with BC.

    Bastards...

  • No Country for Old Men. Really an underated movie. I don't see why so many people hated the ending though it was freakin perfect..

  • @Tomeeboy: @Magic Emperor Anima:
There were tons of Buy one get One Free's at places like Amazon and Toys R Us when HD DVD was still alive.
I was gonna link you guys to this: [www.jr.com] since they had Blu Rays for $7.99 - $13.99, but the deal was over the weekend I guess.
I'd say keep on checking Amazon.com because they just had a buy 2 get one free, and the prices are dirt cheap to begin with anyway.

I bought shit loads of blu-ray during these sales because they were cheaper than DVD's. Now I just hope that lawsuit by the old lady few days ago won't kill off blu-ray, or PS3 for that matter =/ I doubt it'll happen but there's still a small part of me that's worried.

But yeah, even for games, Amazon.com is amazing when it comes to deals, so people really should check it out =)
