Oh, it's tacky. But it's tacky in the best way. This Xbox 360 controller mod places LEDs under the buttons, adding a bit of Vegas glamor to your otherwise dank and sweating gaming marathon. It's not a simple mod, but if you have the time, the glue and the xacto knife, the linked tutorial will walk you through every step of LEDifying your controller. It even has instructions on how to hook the giant Xbox button to your rumble motor, creating a rumble lighting effect sure to send you into a blissful epileptic convulsions.
Oh, and because LEDs are uber power efficient, you shouldn't see a noticeable drop in battery life. Hit the jump for a hot night shot.

Cool... I want to do that.
I already know the button locations,not sure what the point is.I guess some people like this stuff,just doesn't do anything for me. I do appreciate the skill involved though.
lol at choosing red for the ring part!
I think every controller should have a slight glow under the buttons. Not necessarily in colour, because I think that looks a little annoying on the 360 pad. The PS3 pad for instance wouldn't die from a well placed white glow under the PS button...or the other ones for that matter. That's what I always liked about the 360 pad by the way (the glowing guide button).
LEDs, the epitome of tacky.
RROD!!!
lol Now your 360 controller can get RRoD too!
RROD!
awesome!!!
i thought the SIXAXIS was supposed to glow in the middle too... and Llama... wow, haven't been on that site in forever, since i stopped using xbox...
@RPGr:
how ironic...
@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!:
what's cooler than a light emitting diode????? very few things...
oooooooooooooooooh. like a bitchin'lite-brite.
@RPGr: heh, /agree
I might actually do this with one of my controllers. Then I could play Mass Effect/CoD4/Bioshock in the dark with the glow of the TV illuminating my apartment and the soft glow of LED lights reflecting the gleeful joy in my soul.
Perfect, because my normal play experience is in pitch black rooms...with light absorbing walls...with the screen turned off.
"Oh, and because LEDs are uber power efficient, you shouldn't see a noticeable drop in battery life."
What kind of batteries are you using with your WIRED Xbox 360 controllers?!
I'm pretty certain you could do this on the old xbox controller also. Those buttons are actually pretty frakin huge if you take one apart, tons of space for a light. Although I think it'd be a lot nicer if they weren't so bright it seems like it'd be distracting.
I would like to do it for the Y X B and A buttons so I could see them in the dark well I don't stare at my controller to play but it would look cool, the rest can stay I would just want that.
@LittlestLamshi: An organic light emitting diode.
@LittlestLamshi:
Perhaps a light-emitting two cunted hooker (to paraquote Yahtzee)?
It looks cool, but it seems like a waste of energy ~
@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!:
damn you, bioluminescence! damn you!
I wonder why the Xbox button is red and not green?
But it looks like a baby's teaching tool when it's like that.
It's .... beautiful.
And Darthearl beats Sweet Tooth by a few seconds and two exclamation points!
I want one like that, but I'd be too afraid to risk screwing up a $50 controller.
@skrame gives himself a star ☆: RPGr is the real winner here, friend
@Al Bino: three btw ;)
See, now doing stuff like that is awesome! I rather people use their time to do creative personal stuff like that over Cheating during Online Matches or glitching for Achievements.
Mods to make stuff look cooler is good.
Mods to take advantage of others online is douchebaggery.
I think it looks fucking awesome :)
This will be immensely helpful since I never learned where all my buttons are via muscle memory.
@Darthearl: Yes that's the very first Joystick RROD, probably not the last one either.
@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!: LEDs, the epitome of tacky.
LOL, so true. Still in subtle ways (the Wiimote controller selector or a power light) they are quite functional and nice.
The hardest part is drilling out the back of the buttons so the light has room
@Clarke: Didn't you read where like fifteen people made the same joke at the same time? Clearly it's the RROD!
Hmm... Maybe I'll make this with my friends controller and convince him that his controller just got the RROD...
friggin sweet. Although if I even tried that, I'm sure I would screw up somewhere down the line.
Why did they put white lights behind the buttons? I don't like it. They've done it better before.
@Spiderbait:
Try to explain this to Microsoft's customer service. "Um.. Yeah, my controller had those red rings of death. Yeah, my controller. Nope, the 360's fine, but the controllers obviously broken!"
Isn't this like... the oldest mod ever? I know I saw this as an OG XBox mod too...
Speaking of RRoD, my 360 was acting up this weekend and I have a Best Buy Service Plan, so I took it to my store. They swapped 360's with me and gave me $53 store credit because it is cheaper now. My friend did the same thing a few weeks ago and didn't get any cash back. Anyone else take one back there lately?
the only time i actually LOOK at my controller is when i pick it up.
so, this would be rather pointless for me, but looks like a fun experiment.
Man, talk about OLD. This was 'news' soon after the X360 launch. I modded one of my wireless controllers (without the surface mounted leds, though) from these very instructions years ago. But I'll check the site if they ever figured out how to do this on a wireless without a separate on/off switch.
If anything, this would have been a great 'monday' article. Certainly is bringing out all the very original and funny comments.....
That colored effect is really Vegas.
But can you turn it on and off because that could get very annoying...
This has been around for a while now, so I'm glad it's finally getting the exposure it deserves.
This has been around for more than a while... This was done right after the xbox was released... With in a couple months.
@Blinkstale: I liked the various mods I could do on the original Xbox. Most controller cables had translucent plastic for the breakaway piece. So I added LEDs to the plugs to match the colors used in the corresponding controller. Made 4 player matches easier IMO.
As long as it's not overdone (look at any little '94 civic on the road today) a couple LEDs can be a good thing. A PS3 controller buttons could use some lighting via a couple white LEDs (looks for dremel).
@Struct09:
Thank you for being the only one beside me who noticed haha
This is pretty awesome, moar please, except with Wii and PS3 next time!
Ugh. This is tacky as hell.
I can see it now 360 fanboys going all Joy Division. Lol
although led modding fills me with revulsion, for some reason this looks good.
"LEDs are uber power efficient, you shouldn't see a noticeable drop in battery life" - sentences like these will see LED-ing up everything bar my nostrils in the next few years. Just cause i can.
Wow that's a lot of meticulous work. Count me out. I'd pay a few bucks for someone to do it for me. Where do you get the LED's though?
I wish I knew how to do stuff.
Also, before you do this (or do any other LED mods), not all LEDs are created equal. Colors such as blue are much brighter than say, red or yellow LEDs. So your multi-colored LED controller won't as sleek as you hope.
To anyone thinking about doing this: it's really easy, I modded one of my PS3 controllers and a few other things (in a classy fashion) with LEDs and putting the subject back together with minimal extra pieces is the hardest part.
Maybe MS thinks the controller is not ugly enough as it is now.
@ksins5: What?
That's it, I'm going out to buy practice controllers for this very purpose.
@enewtabie: Yeah I liked it enough to try this out, the first one came out horrid, however my second attempt was a triumph. Also, I have been trying to get my fiancee into gaming and she was having troubles remembering where the buttons were in the dark LEDs = Problem Solved.
@Struct09: The picture was taken from llama's site not his personal controller.
For anyone who is interested read through llama's other mods for the 360 great stuff I made it so my controller has the RRoD when they turn on, pretty funny when other friends come over to play.
YES! Now I can still play my 360 if the power goes out
(I'm a hunt a peck sort of button pusher).
@jchasse: think about what you just said....
MS should had released controllers with this already. Just make a switch on the controller to disable the backlight buttons.
I bought one of those mod packs and did it myself. It worked great for
