Here's Some Resident Evil 5 Play Footage

Here's a behind the scenes look at upcoming Resident Evil 5 with a few glimpses of it in action. According to the game's producer Jun Takeuchi, the theme for this game is light and shadows. Bright sunlight increases the division between darkly shaded and sunny areas. Also, going from the light to the shade, makes it hard to see. Vice versa is true as well. That's the visual motif for RE5. The above clip is fresh from the Capcom 25th anniversary DVD that's packaged with the new issue of Japanese game mag Famitsu.

  • looks good

  • It seems a LOT like RE4 with improved shaders and gimmicks etc.

  • Why do all the zombies always have time to shave?

  • xbox version looked soo much better...

  • I haven't played RE since RE2 - so can someone tell me what's with the bubbling corpses?

  • @RandolphCarter: Thought that too. All the movements and animations look like they were carried over.

Ok, I'm a bit worried now...given the controversy about race that is already surrounding this game (see older Kotaku posts about it, several hundred comments long...), the theme is "light and dark"?

I'm not arguing for the game's creators being racist, I don't think thats a conscious thing in the making of this game at all, but I can see already that what looks to be a masterfully produced successor to the classic that is RE4 is at risk of being obscured by this perception.

  • From the looks of things, the fear factor now comes from knowing who's a zombie/infected and who's not.I just hope they have more terrible one liners, they made the game funny as hell.

  • I'm getting so hyped about this game. As for the "xbox version looked soo much better..." was that a joke or were you actually being serious??? You would have thought after this long people would have given up flaming the other console.

  • @QuickPick: Xbox version?

I'm calling it now, the "light/dark" gimmick will only be used during the first five hours of the game and will be completely forgotten about shortly afterwards. I was slightly disappointed that the village level in RE4 was the most intense part of the game and it happened in the first hour of gameplay.

  • Video doesn't work for me! www.gamevideos.com is down too.

  • He was only playing the game using the 360 controller, OMG the ps3 version is BUGGY!!!!!!!!

  • @QuickPick: The game has not come out yet. How can you tell which version look better? Another PS3/360 bashing, why can't they stop?

  • @amida: It's boring now isn't it. Damn simnpletons :D

  • @wizardofoz85: hmm, judging by the replies to quickpick's post I guess I'd better clarify by saying my controller post WAS a JOKE.

  • i wish i spoke Japanese

  • @Meldy: in resi 4 it wasn't anything to do with the story, just there so you didn't have hundreds of corpses cluttering the place.

  • I don't like that he's on the right hand side of the screen all the time. I'd prefer he was in the middle until you needed to aim. A minor nit pick though.

  • it's looking really cool. i really hope that they can get this game out this year.

  • *note to self* srcasum cannot be used when in kotaku comments

  • @Brian

Gamevideos (hosted by 1UP) will not show up for alot of people, is there any other place where this video can be seen?

  • Needs lightgun support. I loved RE4 on Wii, don't think I can go back.

  • @amida: because they are idiots, they don't have any cognitive ability other than calculate fracture into fanboyism(idiots).

Calculate Fracture: 2 and 2 together.

  • I'm not sure I understand the light and dark thing. Is it supposed to be simulating the fact that when you walk from a light place into a dark place, it's hard to see until your eyes adjust? This is very similar to something the HDR Source Engine did...anyone play the demo level Lost Coast? I thought that effect was very subtle, but a very nice touch.

  • Am I the only one who's a little dissapointed that Capcom has cahnged the artstyle again. I wish they'd stick to the Reamake style. Like they did in Re: UC.
And Chris sure has incredibly HUGE arms now.

  • @ruslander: Logically yes

  • I really enjoyed this behind the scenes video.. it's lot better than those eye-candy pre rendered previews.

  • @DaiMacculate:

Your bringing up the racism argument again over the mention of 'Light and dark'?

It's unfortunate that people like you exist. Racism is a leftover of a previous generation kept alive by people getting all upset over trivial issues such as this.

If you ask me, the modern day racists are the people like you who attempt to start these arguments on behalf of everyone. That woman who initially started this nonsense was a complete and utter moron. Her only interest was to gather attention. As is yours.

Taking Resident Evil as an example; in previous games the zombies have been white. I'm white and I never took offence. So why is this new game suddenly considered racist? It's because of the leftovers from a previous generation.

What we need to do is stop making a big deal out of this shit. If you swear in front of a little kid, he's going to learn how to swear. If you start making a computer game with black people in it out to be racist your going to teach that same kid about racism.

I know that there are racists in this world, and there is nothing wrong with teaching our history and letting people know about racism in the past but mass media controversy is not the way to do it.

So, shut the hell up and go complain about boobs on the telly or something.

  • @SolDieR: The animations in this video are probably just place holders, I guess they are still doing the mo-cap for falling down dead etc.

  • need more footage.... now!

  • For those that say it looks like a glorified RE4, i say "YAY!" heh. Really though, they are going to do so much more for it (...speculation on my part... before a troll finds this and says "but j00 d0n't n0 th4t!!!lolZ!!1"), but it looks amazing already. And in reality, if they'd release episodic content for RE4 for the Wii, they'd get TONS of money from me :)

I lost many upon MANY hours on RE4 for both the 'cube and the Wii, and i'd do it again in a heartbeat.

  • @will: I think he's just worried because thats how the media will see it, and they will. Anyway i totally agree. But if i were Capcom i'd just put in a black protagonist and save myself from all the trouble. Oh well gotta admire their integrity.

  • As excited as i am about this game, i'm a little disappointed that they haven't changed the 'zombie' death animations at all since RE4. It's a little thing, but it's noticeable.

  • @SolDieR: Beat me to it ^^;

  • Oh, sorry for the double-post, but for the racism speak...

Isn't it a bit more of a problem that someone sees "light and dark" and automatically thinks "WHITE AND BLACK OMG!" instead of the fucking sun and lack of light?!
Man, i could go on for a few more hours on this...

Too bad i don't have some sort of place that doesn't filter my thoughts, which millions of people can read on some sort of web thats interconnected... almost like a superhighway for information.

    Maybe some day...

  • Man, these guys would be perfect making a 28 Days Later game!

  • YES GAMEVIDEOS I'M 86 YEARS OLD, LET ME WATCH THE DAMN VIDEO.

  • graphically its looking pretty damn sweet. But they really need to get some new animations going on there.Im sure theyr probly just using the animations of 4 temporarily....at least I hope so.

  • great game play!

  • i thought this was a ps3 exclusive?

  • Uh-oh. A game in which the scares are derived from it being hard to see stuff? No thanks. Playing those always gives me freakin' headaches from squinting at the screen.

Unless it's a subtle effect. In that case, sure.

  • Damn... Looks like they are still using the Gamecube stand-in-one-spot-spinning-controls. GIVE ME SIDESTEPPING FFS!

  • Did anyone else notice that Chris Redfield has clearly been using steroids?

  • I don't think that they're using RE4s animations. That would be a complete waste of resources. Animations need a skeleton and that needs to be rigged to the model. Often during the rigging process you make changes to the 3d model of the character, since you discover parts of the mesh that don't work that well with the animations.

And once you make changes to the mesh, you'll need to change the UV layout and very often the textures as well.

Building a character model, rigging it with a skeleton from a 4-5 year old game and then doing everything a second time with the new animations... Maybe they did it with very early builds for rapid prototyping of gameplay elements and settings, but I don't really thinkt that they've got any old assets left in the game at this point in development.

But that doesn't mean that those animations are final. Allways remember: Every game looks like shit until it doesn't. And then you box and ship it.

@will: Did you read my post at all? I said I "feared this perception". It is not my perception, it comes from other people on the internet, this site and others. Most notably the site "Black Looks": [kotaku.com]

Ctrl-F my comments in that thread if you want my full opinion on the subject, and please learn to frackin read before you go off on someone, there is enough hate in the world as it is ;)

    Oh and

Racism is a leftover of a previous generation kept alive by people getting all upset over trivial issues such as this.

Living in Greensboro, NC (google "88 seconds in Greensboro" if you need context for that), I have to completely disagree with all the assumptions behind that statement; Racism has been with us for thousands of years (read the Bible for just one example), and it will not die out this generation, nor likely the next several. That has nothing to do with RE5, just I find your statement completely ignorant of the reality of the issues surrounding Race in the United States and the world in general.

@The_nub_next_door: I appreciate that somebody did see what I was getting at. I thought about that too, but in a way that would be bowing to what I agree would be unjust pressure. My main thing is, Capcom needs to be looking at how to make it clear in press statements and interviews that the focus of the game is zombies and saving the villages/etc from them, not mowing down people based on skin color. I'm just not sure using "light and dark" as a theme or the game is a positive step towards that goal, or that Capcom is fully aware there would even be a potential problem here ;)

  • Am I crazy or are those the exact same death animations from RE4? Meh, they'll probably change, but even if they don't, I like them, so I don't mind.

  • @ShirtGuyDom: Objection. Asked and answered.

Been reading that Jack Thompson court coverage a little too much...

  • Leon now looks with those huge arms like 80s action hero.

  • Light and dark?

    "Look to the cookie!"

  • RE4 only with better graphics.
    Not that i'm complaining though.

  • Glorified Resi4 you cry? What the Howard the duck is the Halo series then? Who cares, its a winning system, and at least its in a radical new setting, don't fix what isn't broken.

I'm sure I shall enjoy it for its gameplay and what shall pass as a story and I couldn't give a quack what anyone else says.

Also yes, ok, I watched Howard the duck ... again, I'm not proud.

  • @4zdenek: Its not Leon. I wish it were because I loved the character design on him. This super human character looks like he is from gears of war without the armor on. Any way this is the game I am most looking forward to.
