For those of you who missed GDC, the Gears of War 2 tech demos are available for free on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. For those of you who either don't own an Xbox 360 or are too lazy to connect it to the internet, the Gears of War 2 tech demo is above. It's direct feed and sweet. Another clip after the jump.
That first video left me drooling. Literally. And I forgot what my birthday was for a few seconds when I went to watch the second one. UE3 is officially my new favorite engine.
I'm really impressed with the new fluid dynamics. Also the destructible environments are fucking awesome. What would be even more awesome is if you can actually shoot through floors after blowing the floor out.
Those destructible environments looked phenomenal! I'm itching to just chuck grenades everywhere to see that pristine concrete shatter just from watching the tech demo.
for some very weird and unknown reason that meat cube brought mental images of classic doom to my head. oh how awesome a current gen reinvention of the original would be...
anyway, that looks fucking fantastic. here's to hoping the sequel takes these elements and makes them into an innovative, great game.
I really loved the water effects, the way the light is reflected and how realistic it seemed when that pillar was plopped into the sea over the sunset. Here's hoping for some excessive toilet humour on the games release!
Speaking as a Playstation fanboy; now THAT's how you do a tech demo.
Though my PS-love is so deeply ingrained it doesn't make me want an Xbox - it just makes me want more developers to show similar love to the PS3.
And yes, the guy was extremely nervous and a hard-core geek, but I love an industry that puts THAT guy up on stage, 'cause they know he's the one who SHOULD be explaining it, as opposed to a slick, well-spoken, good-looking figurehead.
I'm lookin' at you, DuffMan.
(Duffman doesn't care.)
Well lets hope they can do all that on the 360. That tech demo was running on a PC obviously so it will be interesting to see how well it performs on a 360.
Hmm, they need some presentation classes or new ways to make them relax! While the first video was impressive, I didn't feel like it looked all that different than the previous 'version'.
The organic objects is my vote for current gen awesome. I wonder if we will actually see that in Gears 2 on the 360? Me thinks only the PC version. :( But I hope I'm wrong.
that was really cool.
I can't wait for that to come out.
The meat cube looked a little bit more like firm jello to me...but whatever i don't think that there will be to many giant meat cubes in the game.
@DigiMish: it's not just the upped light level it's the way the light bounces off of the surface, the reason the image on the right didn't appear as dark as the image on the left was because the light was actually bouncing off of the wall and illuminating his face and body.
but yeah that was a pretty sweet tech demo, Gears 2 is going to be awesome.
ACCURACY SNOB: This is an Unreal Engine 3 "Tech Update" Demo, not a Gears 2 demo. They hadn't even announced Gears 2 when they showed the meat cube. Of course Gears 2 will use UE3, and this new tech, but I would be shocked if Gears 2 looked this much like Gears 1.
Great engine, but i really hate the way it makes everything look like its made/wrapped in plastic.
Anyhow, i couldn't care less about GOW2 itself , since the 1st one was an overhyped, generic, testosterone-filled nobrainer, with dialogs written by a 11y.o...
Ok now i gonna go and hide, before GOW fanboys attempt to crucify me. =_=

Looks amazing....
That was one nervious guy.
This "Geary War" looks pretty good, but when is Tim Sweeney going to demo the improvements he's made for the ZZT engine?
Tim Sweeney is such a nerd =]
That guy should have taken a couple shots before going out there. Still, cool tech.
mmmmmmmm.... meat cube..... no.. wait a tick... thats pritty discusting
Advanced Character Lighting looks like they just upped the light levels. Not impressive at all.
Everything else is making progress, the UNREAL engine 3 is really capable of some cool things.
That first video left me drooling. Literally. And I forgot what my birthday was for a few seconds when I went to watch the second one. UE3 is officially my new favorite engine.
Honestly, that meat cube needs to be in more games.
@Falsoman:
He sure was. He did better than most of us would probably do thou.
I would hate to have to do that stuff.
Public + Speaking = No thank you sir
@JoBo: Portal 2 with the Companion Meat Cube?
Big cube of meat! Heh
Gears 2 is going to be Epic, truly.
I'm really impressed with the new fluid dynamics. Also the destructible environments are fucking awesome. What would be even more awesome is if you can actually shoot through floors after blowing the floor out.

didnt you show us this before?
Man, I feel for that guy. He was nervous as hell.
He did good tho... and the improvements on the Unreal engine look sick
@coin_operated_boy: Ditto on the Doom reference. I got the same feeling.
I really loved the water effects, the way the light is reflected and how realistic it seemed when that pillar was plopped into the sea over the sunset. Here's hoping for some excessive toilet humour on the games release!
The meat cube actually seemed kinda tasty.
I wasn't really looking forward to Gears 2 until I saw this video. Can't wait to see how they implement these new features.
Tim Sweeney's nerdiness makes Bill Gates look like Brad Pitt...
I was highly impressed with the improvements made, especially the destructive environments.

Excuse my french........FUCK I love me some tech demos. I can't wait to get hm and pray that have all that in high def. Thanks!
That was AWESOME how Cliff came into the GDC, I need me one of those bad boys for Halloween this time around.
I feel for that guy being up there, he couldn't get off the stage fast enough.
I cant wait to fend off the meat cube horde in GOW2. Nice tech demo.
Oooooh. That was so very pretty. I can't wait to play it, and blow large holes in pieces of terrain.
But seriously... a cube of moving meat? Eww. It was all... meaty.
That cube of meat gave me the feeling that they're gonna do a level inside the belly of a monster or something.
@hezz05: thats cause its still the unreal engine.
The only thing thats going to be different is that they might be able to fit a dozen enemies on screen or so compared to the 4-5 in the first game.
Destructible levels isn't that impressive anyways since its not even as robust as Red Faction and that game was released a long time ago.
Gears of War 2 is shaping up to be an average game especially compared to all the games already released.
Freaking shweet!
The organic objects is my vote for current gen awesome. I wonder if we will actually see that in Gears 2 on the 360? Me thinks only the PC version. :( But I hope I'm wrong.
Well, I might be alone here, but Syphon Filter Logan's Shadow had some amazing water. And that was just a handheld.
Still, GoW2 looks like it's got some good tech behind it.
He looks about as comfortable as a boner in church.
Sick.
Enough said.
hmmmmm soft body physics....
I hope they have a weapon that utilizes that technology. Something like the Bio-gun in UT.
Maybe a tactical weapon that disables enemies?
Who knows!
Meat cube got me hungry.
that was really cool.
I can't wait for that to come out.
The meat cube looked a little bit more like firm jello to me...but whatever i don't think that there will be to many giant meat cubes in the game.
did cliffyb say it would be gorier?
Very cool. Soft body physics demo was impressive (i.e. the meat cube). I'd like to see them use that for melee combat.
This tech is available for all games that use Unreal Engine right? Or is it just for Gears of War?
I noticed nothing about it having a story this time around. Guess the fanboys don't mind.
@DigiMish: it's not just the upped light level it's the way the light bounces off of the surface, the reason the image on the right didn't appear as dark as the image on the left was because the light was actually bouncing off of the wall and illuminating his face and body.

Destructable environments were neat, but I hope they remember to include physics. The blocks of rubble did not react at all to the explosions.
"now that i've shown you the new unreal engine, i'll need to change my underwear."
Weighted Companion Cube, move over. It's all about the Meat Cube now...
all i can think about is dead rising 2.... it makes me love life that that technology might some day be put into a zombie game. I can only wish
Meat cubes!? Thats awesome, because I see those everywhere in organic environments!
But seriously, some pretty impressive stuff.
