How's Vista SP1 Working Out For You?

Hey, PC gamers, how's Vista's first service pack treating you? Some people are saying all kinds of nasty things about it, but then nasty people on the internet are so much louder than nice people on the internet, so they might just be full of shit. Especially when you consider that many tech sites are now reporting the service pack brings big performance gains, with ExtremeTech giving the example of framerate increases of up to 20 frames-per-second in World in Conflict and up to 46 frames-per-second in Crysis. Those yet to make the jump shouldn't leave XP behind just yet, however: most benchmarking results are showing that these improvements only serve to bring Vista...almost level with XP on performance. Good news for Vista gamers, then, but for XP users, carry on, it's business as usual.

  • Works perfectly fine. File copies and network transfers are faster. Otherwise no difference. That is to say, it's running swell, as it has been for the last 6 months!

  • XP SP2 is working quite nicely, oh wait...

  • Still with XP. Don't plan to switch until it becomes a necessity.

  • The stupid thing refuses to install for me. I've given up trying to install it.

  • @Taco Bell™: Same here.

  • not to play games but everyday stuff it runs as smooth as it did before. I may have to play Starcraft I and report back later lulz.

  • I haven't had a single problem with it yet. My BFG 9600GC OC worked perfectly. To tell you the truth, if you have a computer that is fast enough to run Vista then you won't have many (if any) issues. 4GB ram, E6600 and that video card run Vista like a champ.

  • I hate Luke Plunwhatever

  • Its going to be tough or nearly impossible to take out winxp, there is still a lot of impromevemnt to see on win xp, it may survive vista...

  • I don't game on my PC, but it seems that just after booting my system I get severe lag sometimes. I'm talking about clicking an icon and having to wait 10 or more seconds for a response.

  • I use XP SP1, does that count?

  • @sUKi: win xp 32 bit get better fps in crysis than vista, vista 64 and win xp 64...

  • Still on xp too. I'd probably be using vista, but apple can't bother to make proper drivers for it because it'd go against their ad campaign *grumble grumble

  • O its great, my computer now randomly freezes and I must hold the power button to restart. Customer support is no help....

    Specs

Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1
    Intel Quad Core Proccessor 2.4Ghz
    3GB of ram
    640 Gb HD

  • You can have my XP when you pry it from my cold dead drive.

  • @AlKusanagi: erase temp files from your hdd...

  • sp1 gave me my first non hardware related blue screen since win98

  • Vista SP1 won't show up on my list of updates available. I probably have an incompatible driver.

But if Vista only *just about* reaches the level of XP's performance...why would I not use XP instead? I know very well of the advantages of Vista by the way. Just...they never did it for me.

Ah well, I've still got my Corporate Volume Licence, might install it on a partition in a few months.

@Sentouki: Fuck off and don't comment then. Hating nonsense is not something we need here.

  • Linux anyone? ... anyone?

  • Image of Erwin Erwin at 09:32 PM on 03/25/08 *

Fine. I only have basic games on my drive because all the games I want to play don't want to run on Vista (Pre-2000). As a PC it's just fine though.
@Sentouki: Okaaay then... I'm going to stand over *here* now... not that you should worry about anything falling from above, no!

  • @t0yrobo: You mean the ad-campaign that claims that the Macbook Pro is the fastest laptop running Vista?
Yeah, I guess they really don't give a damn.

  • The most advanced game I play on this thing is Half-Life 2. Never had problems, still don't.

However, my computer used to crash at least once a week. Since SP1, it hasn't crashed once. That's great.

I have a Vista lappy and SP1 dosn't wanna show up at all. However WiC and a few other games run pretty good (for a laptop) on it already, wish I could see how good it gets with the patch... Come on MS!

    @Sentouki: Random Comment ftw!

  • @lifeinthefridge:
Maybe up the RAM to 4 gigs? I hear Vista needs a lot of memory to run well.

In any case, I hated Vista so god damn much that I spent a grueling week downgrading to XP. I've got an HP laptop, and HP doesn't even offer drivers for my model. I had to to a dozen different sites to get the drivers I needed, and sometimes they weren't even for my specific model. Still runs twice as fast as it did on Vista.

It's fine, notice no real difference. Mouse is still a tad laggy but eh, it's vista. I'm not expecting anything great from it. It's used for light gaming at best and given the load of ram hog vista is, this patch seems to have made it slightly better

  • @TOCATL: Did that yesterday and it still happened to me today.

  • Image of Candlejack Candlejack at 09:39 PM on 03/25/08 *

@TheEngineer: Rocking the Goggles: Nah, 3GB is way sufficient, even for Vista x64, which uses more than x86.

  • XP SP3 releases mid-April and has shown to increase performance by 10%!

  • As with all Windows operating systems, there is a "sweet spot" when it's the one and only good time to upgrade to the newest OS version. It's usually a few years after a new OS's debut, after they've worked out the bugs, which is coincidentally about the same time the truly annoying and often times very fatal bugs from the previous version start appearing en masse.

Needless to stay, I'm holding on to XP for now. I haven't been given a reason to upgrade; I've been given several not to.

  • Boot-up takes longer to load everything. Other than that I see no differences at all.

  • Haven't tried it. My alloted ram for fusion doesn't allow it, and I personally only use XP when I need the compatibility. What's the point of using Vista when I find XP better for what I need it for. Not sure if my parents updated yet (does Vista make you?), or if they'll notice a difference in their facebook browsing. My boyfriend says it makes a difference, the biggest one being his webcam no longer works. But really, any improvement is an improvement, I just won't be noticing it.

The only diff I see is that it says I have 1.00 GB of RAM instead of 0.99 GB.

Besides that everything is the same.

  • It really doesn't matter how horrible or wonderful Vista had been at launch, the response would be exactly the same. People love to hate MS, and nothing will change that.

Vista is Microsoft fixing everything that has been wrong with Windows for years, as opposed to simply trying to trump XP's stability. Indexed searching and all the dialog rewrites have made it the most user stable Windows ever, but gamers are going to hate it until MS gets it to at least the same level of stability as XP.

Once that happens and people stop crying about it, you'll notice all the compliments about things like the ridiculously useful indexed searching bar start to flood out as they should have at launch.

  • It works nicely here.

  • Windows Vista = Windows ME 2
If you know what i mean.

Lets wait and see what they will do with Windows7, but for now ill keep my XP sp2 + inspirat2. ([www.vista-inspirat.net])

  • Working fine here. The poo-pooer's of vista are just wrong. Sorry. :)

  • I've never had any problems with Vista or SP1. Obviously it doesn't perform as well as XP but that's to be expected, no version of Windows performed as smoothly as the last one without upgrading your hardware. The difference is that Vista took 6 years after XP to come out so all of a sudden you had this huge leap in hardware requirements, whereas before new versions were being churned out every year or so which was a much more reasonable change.

  • @Sentouki: Thats blasphemy territory there sir. Although its not as close as banning.

    (or is it?)

  • Image of ca$h ca$h at 09:53 PM on 03/25/08 *

don't know, avoiding it like the plague.

  • @Bobby McPresscott:
alright. tell me when that is and THEN I'll upgrade. And I really want to play my stuff in DX10. I do. The increased system resources really bother me though and up til now there's been no reason to upgrade. Lower compatibility and decreased performance? No thanks. And as to your indexed searching, didn't ms just still that from apple?

  • I'm using Vista and I think it works great. Only problems I've had are with finding things like the configuration for my microphone on the computer. I still haven't found the RUN button or any thing like that so that's a problem.

  • @AlKusanagi: Then bad news, you have a virus :S...

    @Bobby McPresscott:

"Indexed searching and all the dialog rewrites have made it the most user stable Windows ever"

Your opinion friend. I myself hate using Vista and so do my brothers, one of which had it pre-installed on his Dell because the option for XP cost more. I think the new menu scheme is horrible and isn't user-friendly at all compared to XP. Plus there's way too much shine on the OS, I really don't need my desktop to look like bubble-wrapped LEDs.

I feel the problem with Vista is that instead of making the OS more stable, they just added a shitload of extras onto the OS to make it look a bit more like OSX and to make it look nicer. Plus not to mention that the OS seems to alienate anyone who didn't just buy a computer and has 3+ gigs of ram. Just my take on it though.

  • So far, so good. I've been giving it a pretty good run for its money with Gears of War and Bioshock. Also playing a bit of Oblivion. Don't really notice any improvements over pre-SP1... but I didn't have any issues pre-SP1 anyway.

  • I plan on sticking with XP until 2010 when the new OS from Microsoft comes out and I can play Starcraft 2 on my new Microsoft surface :)

  • too bad that ever since i've downloaded it explorer.exe and rundll32.exe have been crashing like mo fuggaz. Hopefully Service Pack 2 will be better!!!!!!!! but then again, doesnt matter for me because i'll have probably installed xp by then.

  • My Vista computer died. It's over there. Being dead. Unrelated to Vista though, as I've tried to put two different OS on it on two different drives, swapping around SATA ports on the motherboard and everything...no dice.

And of course it's about three years newer (AKA brand new) than the computer I'm writing this on. *sigh*

  • I got Vista, but I can't remember if I got the SP. So if I did, I notice no difference. If I didn't, that explains a lot.

  • Working fine so far. Though Portal frame rates took a dump. I can't tell if this is an issue with SP1, the nVidia Beta drivers I just installed, or the last update I got from Steam. -_-

@schizogony: To save bandwidth MS pushes its updates out to only a certain number of users at a time. You can either wait you turn or you can download SP1 directly for Microsoft's download center.

@Spiderbait: Search is the new Run. Just type the app name in there and it'll run.

@AlKusanagi: Its normal for a computer to lag a bit right after you boot it up, since you have to wait for all your startup apps to load. If you can't wait the minute or so for everything to finish loading up then I suggest you shut down some startup apps. msconfig is your friend ^_^

  • Let me know when they offer Vista Lite, stripped down to the essentials(I consider XP Home to be about 80% essentials) and shows results of doing double as well as XP currently does.

Regardless, I'm keeping a hard copy of the Windows XP Home installation CD, th CD key, as much support guides as I can for it, and at least one of my computers will always be running it.

  • I took the plunge and switch to an iMac last week. And I'm much happier because of it.
