Darwinia on the 360 is a "possible future release" no more. Developers Introversion have, after the ESRB leak the other day, come out and officially announced the project, which is to be called Darwinia+. You'll get two games for the price of one: Darwinia, and the multiplayer Multiwinia: Survival of the Flattest will be bundled together, and while at the moment that's all Introversion are saying, quite frankly at the moment that's all we need to be hearing.

Hopefully this does well enough that Introversion does two things:
1)Port it to the PSN
2)Release DEFCON and Uplink as well
What the crap is: Darwinia
They have my money. I love these guys!
a good xbox version of defcon would be welcome too.
@zoesch: There is no way uplink would work on a console.... first of text looks horrible on standard def tvs.... it just not going to work. if any game screams pc exclusive, its uplink
@Amazon_Chris:
It's a strategy PC game that was released on Steam a while ago if I'm not mistaken.
I played the demo, but it wasn't my cup of tea. Although I found it interesting that the project is named Darwinia+.
...cue N --> N+
perhpas this is a new trend.
That subtitle is irritatingly twee.
But it's Darwinia, I can't stay mad at it for too long.
fun game but got to complex to fast for me.
@cubed2D: True but there's options for displaying text properly on SD displays (Otherwise how do you think 8-bit computers managed?) and perhaps it could be adapted as a multiplayer-only game.
awesome, now the problem is I don't have a 360 :(
I never realised why Defcon (an Introversion game too) wasn't released on systems other than MS Windows? It's simple enough to be ported to a freakin' cell phone or even a flash game and addictive enough to drain the battery life out of your phone in hours.
Sure hope it comes out on XBLA...
mmm.... another game I could get for free in the PC is now forcing the XBL users to pay for it? tsk...
DEFCON is an awesome game, the atmosphere is so eerie and ominous, you really DO feel like the world is at your fingertips.
Somehow, I still think that many people will overlook DARWINIA on the 360. It's a shame too, I've heard good things about it, but never had the time to check it out.
@Gambare: Well you know, I heard that piracy is illegal... TSK TSK. I also missed the part where they force you to buy the game if you don't want it.
@zoesch: Ahh yes, there is ways to get text to display quite well on tv screens, and computers of ye olde days managed quite well by makeing the font massive. You could do that if you really wanted, but it would change the way uplink looks quite a lot.
I just dont think you could port uplink to a console without either completely ignoreing users with standard def tvs, or changeing the game so much its not the same game anymore (no small text, no keyboard, ect)
@Gambare: Darwinia costs $20 for the PC, I don't see how it can (legally) be free.
@rospaya:
mmm... I bet you never heard of bonus points in sites like fileplanet, XBL doesn't have any plans for free games or bonus points.
@cheesecake000:
tsk... I never mentioned piracy, read above
@Gambare: Either way you put it, in the end it's not free. And you didn't consider the bonuses you get with having the game on the Xbox...
Anyway, what are the chances you'll get the game free? Slim to none.
IIRC Darwinia ran on Mac, Linux and Windows. It was probably written over OpenGL. So I doubt it would be hard to port to the PS3 if they wanted.
I don't get why people complain so much about paying for games on XBLA. So what if some (flash) games are free on PC...the develpers DO have to make money somehow, and if XBLA is an outlet to do that, then good for them. $10 isn't a lot of money for a fun gaming experience.
Darwinia was a fairly good PC game, but I don't think it deserves the praise it got. There are some fun mechanics in there, but the AI is really stupid.
One word:
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Multiwinia
Fullofwinia?
Darwinia is a tale of digital entities. That tale is not show as text or images, but has gameplay, you play the tale. The preset is interesting, and remind me Tron stuff. T
@Gambare: "XBL doesn't have any plans for free games"
I have 13 XBLA games, out of these I've only bought 1 :)
@Gambare:
unmmm XBL HAS had promotions on free games.
You know who's interested in Darwinia?
Me.
You know how interested I am in it?

I had a friend make that for me a few months back.
Sadly though, I don't play on Live. But I still beat the tar out of the single player game on the PC. Even broke it in a few places by teaching my Squaddies how to scale nearly vertical cliffs in order to rain hot death from above.
how about ... for ... PEE SEE ?
If you have a local Big Lots, check the videogame section. They've had Darwinia for $4-6 since last year. Pretty sure there's currently one copy left at the one by my house...as well as a copy of DEFCON for $6.
You might also be able to find a cheap copy of Darwinia at Circuit City. It was clearanced out some months ago.
darwinia is a perfect arcade release, but i couldnt get into it on pc. its not enough like other rts that i could bring my decades-long skill to bear on it.
defcon on the other hand, is a game i had nightmares about. ive never played a game that affected me so much. the atmosphere is so strong. it should be played at least a couple times by everyone in the western world.
Darwinia is an excellent game. The virtual reality premise is pretty believable and creates an immersive mood. Actual gameplay is fun as well.
@Gambare: I'm not sure if you actually could get darwinia for free anymore. I do remember playing it as a free download a few years ago, but that might have been the Beta.
Anyway, I just bought a physical copy of this from Fry's a couple of weeks ago for $10. Now I'm wishing I hadn't. I could have had Multiwinia! Oh well, it was worth it just for the excitement of playing darwinia again.
What a good game.
