The hard-working gang at Plastic, demoscene creators of the PlayStation 3 semi-interactive demo Linger In Shadows, have released the video they showed at this past weekend's Breakpoint. While not a game, the interactive demo is said by the creators to be released to PS3 owners at some point in the future via the PlayStation Network as an illustration of the machine's technical capabilities.
A YouTube version is here for those who prefer their videos a bit blurrier, with the original AVI currently being hosted at Scene.org. Thanks to Blake and Bent for their help in getting the video up.

Amazing? Confusing? I kinda hope it's more of a tech demo than an actual game.
really, really beautiful. i hope they put it out in PSN.
that head looks like SOTC...
Wow. SOTC. Nice tho.
So, This is what my PS3's dreams are made of.
Yeah, SOTC on drugs.
I was thinking Twilight Princess.
While I think it is certainly interesting, I'm having a hard time finding the point.
I prefered the rubber duckies.
So this isn't going to be a game? It's just a way to flex the PS3 hardware muscle?
I don't get it. Why not just spend the time and money on making a game.
What is up with that flying dog?!
Video was cool lookin though, I enjoyed it.
Will I sound like a cynic if I say I'm not that impressed. It doesn't show off as mcuh as I was expecting, like maybe some mroe in-depth reflections. It's cool but hardly noteworthy. I agree with the other people who said they liked the rubber duckies better.
Yes, more tech demos to show off future "potential" and "capabilities". Color me unimpressed.
neato.
Yawn. If they want to do a good demo, they should study a few more late-80s/early-90s Amiga techno demos. This wasn't terribly impressive on a technical level to anyone who's ever seen a single previous or current generation high end PC graphics card manufacturer demo and, IMO, pretty boring plot-wise.
Looks like something from the Grudge
Looks good. I hope they spiff up some of those textures. The rock and concrete looks a little flat, especially by Oblivion standards.
That made no sense whatsoever.
WTF!?! Colossus head FTL!
That was just weird. Why would they release that by the way?
@Mr.Waffleton: Will I sound like a cynic...
Yes.
i'm not that impressed by this at all. I've seen much better stuff from other games on the system.
How is it interactive? If they pull of something interesting, then I'll be... interested, I guess.
Flying dog. Flying dog? Flying dog! What the hell?
I...don't really know what the hell is going on.
So... this is a CG production crew on devil-ether?
Where is the pope-fucking?
That poor basset hound...
Cats Vs. Dogs = Shadow Demon Vs. Robots?
WTF?!
Very cool anyway. I'm sure it'll look even better on a TV + whatever "interactive" means.
hmm
like others have said some looked nice...but over all.
meh
Metal Green Solid 4, KillGreen 2 and now Linger in the Green. WTF!
Also that pixalized face of the girl reminds me of Monkey Island.
It's like the monster from LOST vs. those robots from the Matrix. I don't quite understand what I just watched, but at least the graphics were nice.
My guess is that you fly around as something (the black cloud, the panda, the cat, the dog, or the Shaows of the Colossus octopus) and just knock shit over in the environment, and it looks pretty.
um? That dog looked pretty horrible. And the cat's tail movement looked unrealistic at one point. They just don't move like that. nice graphics, but I thought the animation needed some work.
Does indeed seem to be something that focuses on Art. But alot of people are screaming how beautiful it looks and that this game ...ehum demo will show the Cell's true power. Maybe i just need to see the trailer in propper HD but to me KZ2 and MGS4 looks better.
Poor dog, I guess he choose wrongly. Perhaps this is living, or something.
Anyway its a good graphics demo.
Was this supposed to impress me? If that's the case = epic fail.
@ManjiKengo:
Maybe because it's a tech demo from the demoscene ([en.wikipedia.org]) and not a developer who has millions of dollars behind him?
How is this impressive? First off, it's called Linger in Shadows, so where the Hell are all of the shadows on much of the structures throughout the demo? Secondly, what's with the clouds moving so jerkily. I mean, everything else is quite smooth much of the time, but the clouds move in a really jerky fashion. Lastly, seeing as how the overall appearance is rather drab and lifeless, especially when compared to actual games that I've played, I don't even understand how this is much of a tech demo.
And what's "semi-interactive" about it? What do you even control?
PS3 does brown really well...
I have to admit, I'm not impressed. I'm a Demoscene fan from way back (Future Crew FTW!) but this was just wankery. Getting amazing things to run on limited hardware was sort of the Demoscene point. This is more like a promotional stunt than a proper Demoscene release.
People should really click the demoscene link at the beginning of the article to understand what this is. If this is being rendered in real time, I'm impressed. The "better stuff" you see in games are pre-rendered cutscenes or use shortcuts that result in that weird texture pop-in like in the Unreal 3 engine.
A little strange. Doesn't look any better than a typical MGS4 cutscene. I agree that time and money could have been spent better doing something more worthwhile, but if this is the blueprint of some crazy game then the concept is intriguing.
No bad, but I've seen stuff from the PC demoscene that's more impressive.
I only watched the video to see the head that looked like one of the colossus. Now I think I was better of not clicking it(so boring)and in the world was going on?
Garbage. Unlease they start developing games this unique for the PS3 this video (although artsy and cool in its own right) serves no real purpose; plus the models all look like ass.
Why did the dog have to die? That's fucked up.
@VoodooCream: I believe I agree. It looks a lot like a cutscene from MGS 4. That's a good thing, but as a showcase of the console's power, it's a bit superfluous considering the existence of MGS 4. I wonder in what ways it is interactive? I think it looks like it could be another cool PS Eye screensaver type thing, but I don't think it is.
That looked pretty cool, but I want to know how big it is. They got that into 64KB, I'll be REALLY impressed. Somehow I don't think so. :)
I'd like to see 64KB demos on PS3 - no need for a complex download process, just click on it and one second (on slow DSL) later, boom, it starts. Lots of processor power for decompressing the hell out of things, too. OK maybe some larger size would be more realistic but...
@ElReyMysterioso-PBUH: OK so although it looked great it wasn't earthshattering (but you'd need to see it in full res to judge - is it 1080p?), and the music is crap, and it's presumably too long given that that video is just cuts, but in fact if you look at their webpage you'll find out that Plastic was (supposedly) founded by two Amiga users, so I expect they're aware of the successful Amiga demos...
Looks pretty cool, but the stuff 've seen in games like MGS4 seem to flex the PS3's muscle pretty well.
I wouldn't mind running this on my PS3.
@Girbun: Best bit! I hate dogs.
Cool, I like how they avoid cliche and created something truly original and quirky.
And?
Is this the 'almighty ps3 demo'? Admittedly it's not HD but i still want those minutes back.
Sigh, cling to it fanbois, cling...
A community college student called. He wants his sophomore art project back.
@Girbun: Would u rather see the cat die? the cat's cute~
They killed a puppy right in the trailer.
Nooooooo!!!! Doggy!!
why?
@TrettOff:
boooooo
Thats at atleast Graduate.
looks like MGS4/MartrixR.
Shadow of the Colossus? Nah. I hope not.
MGS4 looks better.
unimpressed - this is lame
What is this?
What did i just see?
Why?
That was wicked!
@quen: And how can you hate all dogs? Jeez.
I was kind of hoping it was 'Smokey' from Lost, and that it would devour the dog.
*shrugs*
I'm not sure how relevant this is..
you know I am really sad and tired of all these sweet "TECH" demos that Sony has made to so called inspire and showcase the power of the PS3. The thing is that we need to keep in mind that even though most tech demos run on engine and harware the demos are not dynamicly controlled in real time the demos are coriographed as to say ok run demo like this and it runs it. That's why we have not "yet" seen and real games with this calibor of special affect and/or graphic renders. So for now this might as well be a realtime CG animation demo. Like the ones you can download from the Nvidia Tech Demo site.[www.nzone.com] be careful with the demos if you choose to "TRY" to run them if your rig can even handle the Tech Demos.
Start making fun games for the PS3, and all these tech demos will start meaning something. For right now. This is white noise.
Kinda underwhelming. By no standards bad. But not that great.
Give it some time people, the PS3 is just a year old.
