Netflix recently polled its members to see how interested they would be in the online rental company streaming movies to TVs via the Xbox 360, Reuters is reporting.
Netflix declined to tell Reuters whether the survey was an indication that a streaming service, rumored to be bound for the Xbox 360 and PS3 since October, was imminent. The spokesman did say that Netflix was interested in getting its movies to consumers' TVs "in as many ways as possible."
Now word if the survey addressed the possibility of the service coming to the PS3.
Seems like a good call for Netflix and maybe could allow Microsoft to get out of the video rental business, settling instead for a cut rather than the whole shebang.

Typo in there somewhere.
the it crashes.
But what about people with the tard pack xbox?
I'd prefer this to Microsoft's current service for one reason and one reason only: Sony Pictures movies would be available.
Seriously, the console war should not limit what movies we should be able to watch. It's like Sony only letting their movies play on Sony TV's or something ...
Streaming in Firefox sure would be nice.
Brilliant. More ridiculousness of paying to rent a movie on a console for an overinflated price
I've been a Netflix subscriber since the beginning, and the only way I'd use this is if there's no additional charge. M$ wouldn't go for that, unless Netflix eats the charge on the back end.
As it is, we only use Watch Now for TV series, because Netflix doesn't offer subtitled anime or DVD extras.
@DARTH_TIGRIS: Shh...don't give sony any ideas...
@smitty1123: IEtab
I've rented a few off of Live, and I dunno ... I'm not a big fan. Perhaps Netflix will offer some innovations in the download business.
@balls187++: I meant natively in Firefox.
Why would Microsoft be getting out of the video rental business? They seem to be very pleased with how it's been doing.
'settling instead for a cut rather than the whole shebang.'
Microsoft rarely 'settle' for anything other than absolute Orwellian control.
this would be fantastic if I could do this on my ps3 browser. I've been hooking my laptop up to my hdtv for instant downloads and it's a real inconvenience since my ps3 has an internet browser. I've e-mailed netflix for months about this and I'm glad they are considering it. I don't know about implementing it for xbox, but for PS3 it is just such an easy solution.
I'd definitely use this, especially if streaming TV episodes are carried over.
The Netflix CEO is on Microsoft's board, so seeing MS get preferential access to this is no-brainer.
This would be pretty awesome
I would use this only if it's free to use..like their web based version. I love to use it when I'm bored.
But if I have to pay another fee just to stream Netflix to my 360, they can go to hell. I'll just use my computer for it.
Why would the studios do this through Netflix or some other middle man?
If they put up the movies on there themselves they get a much bigger slice of the profit.
I like the picture
Surely this is one area where Sony can pulverise MS given that they have film studios etc?
If Microsoft wants to get into the digital distribution of movies, they *have* to get on-board with this. Otherwise you need some sort of OTHER set-top box (PS3, if that much is true) to get Netflix going via streams. Owning both consoles, I couldn't really care which one (if not both) it's available for, but it seems really really really important to Microsoft and their "we're not doing Blu-Ray any time soon" mentality.
@pot3ntial2suck: but how would you get the movie from the PS3 to your TV?
@ErskinPig: Pulverise is an understatement!
I assume this would be based on the current streaming guidelines which equate to 1 hour per dollar spent per month -simply an expansion off PC to XBox. This would be beautiful. I haven't used any of my streaming time at all yet. I just don't want to have to watch things on my computer.
No ps3 love? phfff not interested.
I like Netflix -- one of the few companies that I pay ever month with satisfaction instead of anger.
I mean, LOWERING their prices after 6 years of successful operation? That's rare. Then offering limited streaming for free, followed by unlimited streaming for free.
Wish I could afford some stock!
@ErskinPig: This is absolutely unrelated to Blu-Ray; what film studios does Sony "have" with regards to digital distribution?
Sony affiliates like MGM are already on the Marketplace by the way. Having Blu-Ray support of a studio has no bearing on digital distribution.
What game rentals. Gameznflix sucks so hard. I need both fixes of movie and game. please netflix
Already have netflix. The streaming is awesome, but since my desktop is hooked up to my TV... I have no need for it to be on consoles.
@Snuffbox: Well I'm no expert on the subject, but I thought they were heavily involved in the film business, which you'd think would give them an obvious advantage over MS with this sort of thing...

If M$ can pull this in exclusivly.. then it gives them some arguement vs the Blu Ray.. depending on your preference..
hear that its the sound of the last few nails being pounded into Blockbuster's coffin
I really want Netflix on my 360. I don't want any videos off of M$' crappy video marketplace.
@pot3ntial2suck: It's not that natural on PS3 as the streaming that Netflix does works specifically w/Windows Media Player 11 and IE6 or higher on PC. I was actually messing around w/the PS3 browser last night and it handled like molassas.
@smitty1123: It would be nice if it worked w/Firefox and it may after IE8 comes out since MS is finally going to conform to the web standards everyone else agreed on long ago.
This is a no brainer. I thought the XMB news would have been a netflix integration news.
I have both a PS3 and 360, so Netflix streaming on either platform would be very nice. Though it would seem to me that the PS3 would be the better fit. I mean, it's a slightly more open platform, and, well, last I checked Sony wasn't doing video rentals, while Microsoft is.
Course I could be wrong about that. I haven't spent too much time poking around at the online store on my PS3.
@DARTH_TIGRIS: Nice point.
@ErskinPig: LOL. That statement shows you don't know how fucked up Sony is internally as a corporation. It's almost more likely that XBL may have a better chance then PSN with Sony Pictures.
@okenny :): As I said, I'm no expert, but I seriously doubt that. 8-)
@Billkwando: They will never offer subtitled anime. ChaChing for MS if this goes through.
Oh, and don't forget, Netflix founder, chairman and CEO Reed Hastings is part of the 10-member board of directors at Microsoft.

The big question is what's TAKING this so long???
@DARTH_TIGRIS: exactly what's the hold up. i have been watching tons of HD movies since the begining of video market place. So if i could just have an unlimited service program i'm there on day one. hope we can get this before HOME movie theater lauches. lol
For a couple of bucks extra on my Netflix subscription i'd be fine with this, but for some reason i bet it's going to be too expensive and pretty restrictive. I have nothing to base this on except for my general knowledge of how MS works, but i'd put money on it.
They already do this online but it's limited. If they can stream new movie releases, that would be interesting. But I can only watch streams of The Office and Letters from Iwo Jima so many times.
