Hammer Comes Down On Xbox Live Cheaters

Last year, MIcrosoft's Larry Hryb issued a stark warning to Xbox Live users in the wake of some issues with identity theft and achievement tampering. Today, Microsoft have taken action against those found to be in violation of the service's code of conduct. A number of accounts have been "affected", with punishments ranging from a resetting of gamerscore to public shamings (above) to permanent bannings to all of the above. Those caught, you have, oh, none of our sympathies. Those unaffected, nothing more to see here, move along.

    Virtual Penis Smash!

  • HAHA Thats great!

  • Hehe, awesome.

  • Never too early...

  • Is this in effect yet?, if so, can anyone actually link a dirty cheater/gamertag?

    Win and another win.

  • or, checking out StripclubDj shows 0 gamerscore.

  • lol..awesome..How about a negative score?

  • Microsft lacks style. You don't do that!. Theres always false positives, and you don't want to insult false positives. Just ban the cheaters, and go. Insulting gets nowhere.

    "I am a dirty cheater". <-- lame.

  • @tei: It's Microsoft's service, they can do whatever the hell they like. People agreed to that when they signed up.

  • I'm imagining "Home"-space raids on PS3 in the not too distant future. Cheater's avatars will be hung in the central plaza and virtual tomatoes can be purchased to throw at their rotting corpses in a fun minigame.

  • @El-Suave:
I'll sign up for that! or you could just ban in game XMB for each person..It's like a knife!

  • @El-Suave: I'd like to have a false beard, a few of those big stones and a bag of pebbles, please.

  • oh god it'd be hilarious if that was like almost 2 million of there live base.

  • @Dioxen: Is not about laws or private contracts. Is about what is wrong and what is right, and what is lame. And this is wrong and lame. There will be false positives.

  • In dubias proreo.

  • Oh noes this is going to give Witzbold ideas D=

I don't want to be turned into a lemon!

  • I personally think this is fanfuckintastic. For the longest time it was a worthless deal, the achievement.
    But now...
    it's only slightly less useless.

I find it's a step in the right direction, but personally I use the achievements as a nice gauge as to whether or not I'll actually play a game long enough. Single Player achievements are my focus at times simply to give me something to do. I think the problem here was when people took being a douche to another level and made that achievement that was so hard to get seem worth less.
Consider it the whole, "if everything is art then nothing is" concept, only brought to where you enjoy yourself.
If any schmoe can get certain achievements, then what did anyone achieve. It keeps gaming competetive and still enjoyable. That's what achievements should be. I mean, anyone here NOT gauge an "opponent" based on how well he or she accomplished particular achievements and whether they go certain ones before or after a particular order you did? Just some food for thought.

  • I wish they did this banning to the people who cheat in COD4.

  • This is the first example I've ever seen a company enforce punishment on artificial inflation of points in a leaderboard system. >_>

Although, if they truly want to publicly humiliate them, best if they have a list of said people so it's easier to amuse ourselves by perusing their info.

@Lixie: Until we get "proper" servers that aint gonna happen. :x

  • @tei: Not really. Live keeps detailed information about usage statistics. People being banned are those that have earned achievements with means other than playing the game itself. Reading the "Find out more" page would tell you that.

If someone has a full gamut of achievements for a game but have never played it beyond putting it in the 360 then something is very suspicious.

  • Premise 1: Internet = serious business
Premise 2: Videogames = serious business
Conclusion: Therefore, videogames + internet = super, extremely, mega, serious business.

  • @Lixie: Or Gears of War. Had a match the other night where the Supreme Douchenozzle decided to hop outside the Mansion map and play grabass with his little Locust friend. A half hour match turned into a 1.5 hour match.

  • Sweet. I support it.

  • Not that anyone's gamerscore effects me in any way, it is great that they will ban those little nerdy fucks who like to waster their time cheating a personal gaming recording system.

  • @El-Suave:

If Sony implimented that I will immediately buy a PS3 and sign up for Home, it would be epic.

  • @tei: so... you're a cheater and you don't like being called out?
    jk

  • I am fairly certain that the image above is a mock up not showing that Microsoft changes any of your gamer tag info, but instead showing what the "What happened to their gamer score?" dialog box looks like.

But feel free to freak out without actually looking into the issue, that's totally sweet.

I died laughing when I saw Stripclubdj's account. I would have LOVED to have been a fly on his wall when he turned his 360 on and saw the damage.

  • They don't change the motto, or your gamertag. The only thing that will change is the gamer score and the added section at the bottom. MS will not change your motto to I am a dirty cheater.

  • @Dioxen: If someone has a full gamut of achievements for a game but have never played it beyond putting it in the 360 then something is very suspicious.

Here's an interesting (and quite realistic) scenario. I was over at a friend's place this weekend, I transfered my Gamertag to their 360 while I was over there and a bunch of us played Halo and Rock Band. I got a number of achievements in both.

Then I went home and recovered my GT on my "home" 360. Halo 3 has never been used on that machine...yet I now have roughly 450 points from it on my GT.

This same friend didn't have a 360 until after Christmas this year. But another guy in the apartment did. So his Gamertag was originally created on one machine and then was transfered over once he got his own.

So now there's roughly 2000 points worth of achievements in his tag that are from games that have never graced his box.

    Is that cheating?

  • Damn. That's like...e-penis shrinkage. Good, fuck 'em.

  • I mean, anyone here NOT gauge an "opponent" based on how well he or she accomplished particular achievements

I don't. But the games I play online right now are RB and GH primarily. So not seeing "beat game on Expert" could mean anything from they haven't even tried to being stuck on Green Grass & High Tides (one song from finishing it)

  • As Nelson would say: "HA HA!"

    [achievements.schrankmonster.de]

  • @TRT-X: A valid point, but game usage is tied into a gamertag. For your scenario to be valid, the console would be linked up to live in both cases (to upload the updated gamertag and to redownload it back at home)

No matter which system the game is played on, the fact the game was played is still registered. The only workaround I can see is if you do not access live at all, at which point it wouldn't really matter.

  • Quote from the FAQ: I've heard of other players getting banned. Why don't you just ban these gamertags?
We believe in players reforming themselves, which is why gamerscore correction only applies to previously earned achievements. This allows these players to earn achievements like other "fair" players without having to get banned from LIVE.

Nothing to do with the £40 subs they get a year then ;)

  • For me, gamerscore only matters amongst the people on my friends list (I don't populate it with random idiots I meet in a game - good people only!), especially amongst those who, like me, often get a game when it just comes out. It's an unspoken competition, especially in multiplayer, but when one of us calls out, "Just got an achievement!", you can pretty much feel the hate flowing through the headset (albeit friendly hate), followed by the need to step up your game and get more bagooks than the other guy. The overall score means nothing, but the achievements for a particular title is where it counts.

  • I was the only person in my friends list to have a full 1000/1000 gamerscore in CoD4, and I let every damn one of them know about it. Until I got a voice message from one them saying "MILE HIGH CLUB MUTHAFUCKA!" and I felt tears of pride well up in me.

  • @El-Suave: And virtual tomatoes would only cost 80 Microsoft points each!

  • @TRT-X: game usage is tied to an account, not the the xbox.

  • It's kinda funny, because these people bring it upon themselves. I'm sure almost all the people caught had those ridiculous gamerscores that no one could ever obtain on their own.

    What a vicious cycle.

  • @TRT-X: Your account on MS's end would still show gameplay time in those games. This isn't cheating. The issue is when a player spends an abnormaly short time playing a game, when someone is continually transferring accounts, or when someone sells their Live account.

  • I could never understand cheating in general. What the hell is the fun in cheating. I would rather know that when I bitch slap someone I did it for real.

  • That is hilarious. I bet they're going nuts over at 360gamesaves, what with everybody using their "gamesave resigner" tool.

@Fyren: This explains him trying to sell his live account a couple months ago. He obviously has an inside contact (there are other reasons).

  • Now if they could only incorporate a 'I'm a dirty exploiter'...

I'm sick of people taking the bomb up on the second floor of the garage on Crash in Call of Duty 4.

  • @-EDGE-:

Unless you are talking about cheating in GTA. In which case more weapons = more fun and destruction.

  • Awesome simply awesome!

  • Yeah, hammer em right in the nuts! Fucking cheaters.

  • @Agies: "The issue is when a player spends an abnormaly short time playing a game"

    ... but how about Avatar?

  • Maybe its just me, but why does anyone care so much about gamerscore cheats? as far as i know, no prizes or rewards are being given out to people who have high gamerscores. Seriously, i just dont get it.

  • @tei: Did they wipe out your GS? You sound rather bitter.

  • @Agies: when someone is continually transferring accounts

Thanks for the clarification. Though I have a friend who bounces between one or two 360's (the same guy who didn't have one for a while) in the same apartment. I think he finally got an MU to store the Gamertag on (more to avoid the hassle of constantly recovering).

  • @meltyman: I agree. I do like having the little xbox sign appear to say I have got an achievement but apart from that it's uses are null. Hopefully, when Sony finally releases it's take on achievements it will be something a bit more...rewarding.

  • Image of Doomstalk Doomstalk at 07:26 AM on 03/25/08 *

@TRT-X: Unless they've got an extremely high gamerscore, I'm assuming they'll be fine. The people Microsoft is likely to target are the ones with abnormally high scores on top of suspicious behavior.

  • @Bearskopff: but apart from that it's uses are null.

For me they're goals to shoot towards. I don't think I would've stuck with Run To The Hills are Hard Drums or GG&HT on Expert Guitar if it weren't for the fact that they were the only songs keeping me from a few achievements.

That and going solo through the Endless Setlist. There's two motivations for me to try something or not to give up when I'm struggling. 1) It unlocks content. 2) Achievement.

I've found that they keep me playing games I may have otherwise given up or set aside. As well as encouraged me to try new methods of playing (or new characters I may have otherwise not used).

  • @cocomo:

Well I equate that type of thing to masturbation. Hear me out…

Your significant other catches you rubbi'n one out to the person next door…CHEATING!

Your significant other catches you rubbi'n one out to person next door "magazine", it may be a bit awkward, but it's OK.

The moral, playing with yourself is one thing, playing with another (when you shouldn't) is another thing entirely.

I have no idea what I just said...

  • Image of jayntampa jayntampa at 07:30 AM on 03/25/08 *

So ... did anyone else here check their gamerscore, you know -- just in case :P I knew I had never cheated, but I just wanted to verify I was ok. Whew!

Anyway, I think it's fine that Microsoft is doing this. It's not like they're taking away an actual resource.

  • When does the "I'm an ignorant racist" or "I'm a bigoted homophobe" shaming happen?

  • @shikaningen:
Truer words have never been spoken, my friend. ;-)

  • Image of Doomstalk Doomstalk at 07:35 AM on 03/25/08 *

@meltyman: I think the real question is why people cared enough to cheat. For legitimate players, it's something neat to show your friends what you've done in games. If a large portion of the players cheat, though, it cheapens the effect. Also, for the record, Microsoft has handed out prizes for achievements in the past.
