Anyone still playing the game online should know this isn't really an optional deal; if you don't get it, you won't be able to play in ranked Big Team, Social Big Team, Team Slayer and Rocket Race matches.

I just let my XBL account, that I've had since Halo 2, run out, and I have no plans on returning to the service until it's free.

really? you do realize that paying the measley $50/year keeps xbl running as smoothly as it does, yes? go out and buy a wii (if you haven't already) and try playing smash bros online using the free service (just bring popcorn, because you're in for a slideshow.) you pay for quality and, personally, i'll be happy to keep on paying.

Actually, the fee has nothing to do with the smoothness of Live. Live doesn't use dedicated servers. It's all hosted by the individual gamer.
That's what you pay for: The ability to host stuff for people/play on people's hosted stuff... and for the servers to host content.
Looks like they're finally free, according to a very recent comment on the above-linked Bungie forum. It'll be nice to have Standoff and Rats Nest on Big Team games... nice to have more than 3 Big Team maps in general.
