As alluded to yesterday, here is a screen clip from the Fuji TV nationwide network news attempting to draw a link between the senseless multiple stabbings by suspect Masahiro Kanagawa in Ibaraki Prefecture and gaming. Fuji TV flashed a clip of Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword and wrote this at the bottom of the screen:
Found in the suspect's bag was this katakana hack and slash game software—
Keep in mind that Kanagawa first murdered someone on March 19th and that Dragon Sword didn't go on sale on March 20th. Days later, he then proceeded to stab 8 bystanders, killing one, on March 23rd. As commenter Muu has pointed out, Kanagawa also apparently had several Eye of Judgement cards on him as well. Truth is, his reasons for doing this run deeper than any pixelated ninjas. Nothing like dime store Freud to help explain complex tragedies! Makes everything all better.

Told you people Japanese news is no better than Faux news in the states.
This country is one of the biggest alarmist countries right next to the US of A.
Wow. I honestly thought that this kind of excuse to blame games only existed in the USA.
At least they can't blame it on the foreigners this time... -_-
Meh, I guess they have to blame something.. Cuz pressures of society, or a mental issue couldn't have had anything to do with this..
Even though they don't know about the release date, I think they're trying to link violent games in general to this behavior.
I still haven't forgiven the Japanese media for crucifying the first group of Japanese hostages in Iraq. And every damn student I had just buying it hook, line, and sinker, absolutely amazed when I presented the alternative theory that photojournalists and medical volunteers in war zones were heroes.
@bapfap: Well with Japan they got the idea from the US during the time when the GTA blame game was running rampant due to those kids who were "mimicing" the game. Then all those reports hit here which they started to go after videogames even more as a cause for the rise in violent crimes with young people.
TOTALLY not the lack of parenting that goes on so much in this country.
Wow, Itaki is gonna be pissed.
I guess people cant be held responsible for their own actions anymore. Solution: blame everyone else. Seems like the cool thing to do now.
Something like this doesn't happen here in Germany.
People buying, possessing or even looking at violent videogames are sent directly to jail, like they should!
Thank God!
Ahh, it's good to see posts where we are all cooperating/agreeing =D!!
Since Gaming is a newer form of media than others, people will antagonize and scapegoat games until something newer comes out. Internet, they can't touch that. Mwuahaha. Why can't people just observe and see that any media can be influential.
Sidenote: anybody see the Corny american Ninja Gaiden DS commercials? Itagaki isn't saddened by that?
@Zerozaki Ishiki:
Oh my god... I was so pissed off at that I could barely think straight. I mean, what the fuck were they thinking. How the fuck can a human being blame somebody for trying to help kids in a war torn country. I know that Japan has some very unconventional attitudes towards civil disobedience, but Jesus Christ, that was ridiculous.
Sad scapegoatism. Looks like hating on video games really does transcend culture.
They see how well it works in the US... why not give tabloid, false media coverage a try.
@TheBagofSand: Itaki?
@doing: Yeah, blaming rap and hip-hop was getting old.
@slomo788:
He's the creator of Ninja Gaiden.
Everybody in Japan games to some extant. The remarkable thing would be if they found NO games or paraphernalia on him.
"That's it. I can't take it anymore. I have to admit it. In the last few month's I have murdered several small children, ripping from there bodies various organs. In the process I also managed to murder each and every one of their father's."
"Oh ya. I played Bioshock for a while . . . Wait! You mean all I have to do is say I played a video game and I'm all free? Awesome!"
"And before you Pigs try and pin it on me, yes, I did set my mother on fire and beat her with a rolling pin but that was AFTER I played Cooking Momma."
"Suck on that you Bitches!"
@TheEngineer: Rocking the Goggles:
Oh yeah, but he spelled the name wrong.
A japanese person with a ds game, no way!
@TheEngineer: Rocking the Goggles: Live here for a while and you will get used to the media shafting its "own". They do it quite often to up ratings and what not, plus to drive the general public into frenzies over issues they know little to nothing of.
Then again isnt that the whole purpose of the mass media in the first place? :D
@TheEngineer: Rocking the Goggles: And on the grounds that they brought shame to their country.
David Spector earned himself a lot of respect for being the one motherfucker I ever saw challenge that. The other talking heads all just blinked at him and went back to their talking points. I have no idea how he stayed so calm.
It was a good thing only my brighter students tried to talk about something like that, or I'd have gotten myself fired.
"Katakana hack and slash game"? I think the 'katakana' part is a typo.
@Zerozaki Ishiki: How unimaginably infuriating.
Im tired of this sudden beat down of the Japanese culture? When have we ever cared about Japanese news casters? Ever heard of Fox news? Yeah I would be so quick to the jump to bash a countries news people. No disrespect to you Ashcraft
@Zerozaki Ishiki: David Spector is a totally cool guy, met him in town once and he actually stopped to talk for a bit when I recognized him and said hi.
Did he stab people because he liked to play Ninja Gaiden?
Or did he play Ninja Gaiden because he liked to stab people?
@TheFinalMario: We live here you dont.
This is pretty much what the fucking news does here quite often.
All news stations pretty much = Faux news in Japan.
@Witzbold: good one, lol. "Faux news" never gets old.
Media is dumb. Except maybe BBC.
@Chris3000: I dunno, the BBC has kinda dropped in quality since the whole Iraq situation began with Blair and Bush riding in the same boat. :x
I still prefer it to CNN though, but not as much as I used to.
@Witzbold: Really? CNN got just as bad. I got so tiered of yellow journalism I pretty much just stopped watching the news.
@psycoking: CNN was always bad personally.
@psycoking:
Hey, watch that kind of racist talk here, young man. It's uncalled for.
@Witzbold: Yeah, but compared to CNN, it's like, actually news. I mean, how much can you cover the governor getting a hummer? Seriously? There's real news happening around the world, that but gets a whole of 5 minutes of air time. Eck.
@DarknessMyOldFriend: Im assuming he means yellow as in spineless.
@DarknessMyOldFriend: ??????
@Kinketsu: Suddenly I have images of a 'Let's Learn Katakana with Ryu Hayabusa' for NDS, where you write the letters as they appear on-screen, Typing of the Dead style.
You hear me Tecmo, get to work! DOA5, Code Cronus, and DOAX3 can wait.
Do the PC rape sims over there come get the same treatment from the media?
@Witzbold:
Yeah I have to agree with you that the quality of the news here in Japan is pretty darn low. In fact, I'm impressed you manage to watch much Japanese tv at all. The quality has dropped so much over the past few years imo.
The main difference to the US is, I think, that theres no moral crusaders or 'family' groups driving media anti-gaming bias here. All the media outlets just seem to jump on the bandwagon. Its like an internal memo goes out to all the major news and talk programs.
Actually, knowing how Japanese companies work, that probably IS what happens...
@Witzbold: He means yellow journalism as scandal-mongering, sensationalism, or other unethical or unprofessional practices by news media organizations or journalists.
(Thanks Wikipedia!)
This is why I don't watch the news any more. Mass media sucks.
I get all my news from Wonkette!
@DarknessMyOldFriend: how is that racist????
@MetalGearMax: Heh, good point. Nah, that would require some actual, researched journalism. We couldn't have that!
@deathsyth8888: Yeah basically spineless, since nobody seems to have the BALLS to report real news.
@Gwynna: Yeah Japan is totally about following the crowd. That and theres so much coorporate incest going on over here pretty much all the stations are connected in some way or another. So to be on top you gotta report what everyone else does, whoever does the reporting first though wins is what it seems. The same went on when Japan had a load of its reporters over in Iraq. It was pretty much a "gold rush" for whichever station could get the coverage the fastest.
That was information given from the apparent situation by a private contractor who was hired to watch over one of the Japanese reporters as his PSD.
Based off of that and how they do things here, its not suprising. With news reporting in general its the same anywhere, but for Japan it seems to be an even bigger stressing point put on the reporters by the news stations back home since the whole situation of the JSDF being in Iraq was a big political problem which had caused mass unrest with the people, and the news stations Im guessing had pressure from the govt to make sure as much news came out to help quell the fires back home.
@MetalGearMax:
In a word, no. But there was a case a few years back (quite a few, actually) where a guy killed an elementary school student and, when searched, was found to have an apartment full of hentai and other more moe stuff too. The media had a field day with that. Remember mate, 'otaku' still has plenty of negative connotations here (unlike, ironically, its usage in English) thatnks to cases like that and the influence of the lead-by-the-nose-band-wagon-jumping media.
Very sad thing, but in Germany it was the same when a teenager has gone rampage. Then in the media they blamed it all on Counter-Strike and such games although perpetrator hasn't played the game since years. But somehow the countries want to have an argument to justify their bans for many games in Germany... and entitles every shooter as "Killerspiel"(Killergame). Well, what can we do against the state that tries in every way to convince his people that games are bad for their children. But are they really bad when handled in a right way ? Because nowadays many parents aren't really interested if the games they buy for their children are really suited for them. That is way I think somehow the ratingsytems are good for nothing when many don't consider them when they purchase games for their children. I've seen it to often that a parent have bought a 18+ rated game for his propably 12 or 13 years old child. OK it is their decision, but is it also right ? That's why I think they should blame the games for what poeple have done and I think games can't make "Killers" out of the poeple when they are mentaly sane. The government must always show his real social background and then mostly you see things like. He was bullyed by his classmates and such and the mostly his real motive for his actions.
