  • All of a sudden the Bioware game is the one looking silly.

  • Yet another RPG transformation we DON'T need.

  • Will there be a meter showing your 'tude going from Goodie-Two-Shoes to Bad-Boy hedgehog? Maybe at his worst, Sonic transform into Shadow D= And then the game gives you a gun!

...oh wait, that would be great!

  • Dark brotherhood eh. I suppose all the jokes relating to the Oblivion Assassin's guild have already been done to death, right?

  • Just does not look good. Not one bit...

  • See the reason I liked sonic, was because it was a fun fast platformer...

    NOT A STUPID RPG

  • I was never behind this. I could always imagine, "Yeah, remember that HORRIBLE Sonic RPG? What were they thinking?" a year after it's release.

So yeah. This can go away. Unleashed, please.

  • This game will be far better then Unleashed. Believe it.

  • hey mario pulled it off as an RPG (5 times!!), so why not Sonic?

  • That should be a bet/poll/competition/TAB.

Which will come out on top, Sonic Chronicles or Sonic Unleashed?

Hmm... i dunno, i'd say it's a touch choice... Sonic Unleashed LOOKS good and has a good basis but it's a horrible reputation company versus Godly RPG making company...

  • Dont knock it until you try it. This is Bioware you know, they know a little something about RPG's. Its amazing the buzz there is over Sonic Unleashed, how soon we forget...

  • Finally! I've always wanted to explore the deep, fascinating, multi-faceted characters and incredibly detailed world of Sonic the Hedgehog. Now I can finally do that, without having to worry about silly things like speed or reflexes.

  • @rich8606: Every Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2 has been terrible.

  • I'm surprised at all enthusiasm I've been hearing toward Sonic Unleashed.

I don't have anything against 2D platformers, or Sonic for that matter, and I grew up with the Genesis, so I can understand the appeal should it turn out like any of those games, but from the footage that's been shown (granted it's only a glimse, so hopefully there will be...more) it looks much more like the whale and truck scenes, from Adventure, and Adventure 2, repectively - gameplay just shy of 'on rail', where all you do is hold right (and occasionally forward! Yeah!) and hit jump now and again to leap those arbitrary holes. I'm assuming the excitement is from a cross between nostalgia and the mindset of 'as long as they ditch that human kissing tripe'...but I remain wary.

  • @Jackablade: No, they haven't...why've they called it the Dark Brotherhood, does the Night Mother talk to Sonic, and his foes invoke the wrath of Sithis?!

That aside, it does look pretty interesting!

  • I'm just not really feeling anything about this game yet. Maybe if they manage to find some screenshots that have something even remotely interesting in them it'll stir up some sort opinion on this.

  • @Foxstar Sixtail:

Hell yeah to that. Never bet against Bioware.

  • It looks like a gameboy advanced game.

And not in an awesome 'Castlevania GBA' way.

More like a 'Crash Bandicoot GBA' way. Ugh.

  • @smartpatrol: Mario didn't have either of those things, and that turned out fine. I like this idea better than Unleashed and that werewolf crap. Where'd companies get the idea they need crazy gimmicks in order to "spice up" gameplay? And it's always some stupid "not your grampa's Sonic TROUBLED ANTIHERO" garbage.

  • All I see is Sonic and his shitty friends. You sure there's a game in there?

  • i really wonder how they can make an rpg (which is usually about interacting with lots of characters) with the sonic universe, i mean all characters besides 2-4 totally suck, i´d be happy if i never see em in a game again, not if i have to talk lengthy with lame characters like shadow or everything else that came out after sonic, tails and robotnik.even those aren´t hugely likable characters but compared to the rest they are pure genious .

  • @Krytha: No.

  • @Bobby McPresscott: How does a Sonic RPG not ALWAYS look silly?

  • i am still exited-but this screens seem a little dull and boring-everything looks the same..and looks gba-ish

  • @tomsamson: If you can make a RPG of Mario (Like @rich8606: said, FIVE TIMES) and have almost all of them be highly playable and great little games, then you can make a RPG of Sonic. Honestly, for as twisted and fucked up as the Archie comic is, you could build a hell of a RPG around that alone.

  • Aw let you hate flow, you wonderful trendycore gamers you.

  • I'm looking forward to it... I guess I'm in the minority here...

  • @Platypus Man: I'm looking more forward to this then Unleashed because my trust in Bioware is stronger then Sonic Team ATM.

What i'm not looking forward to is the flood of porn that's going to come if any new 'friends' are put in the game, or furries claiming Bioware is staffed by furries when they find some text that can be taken in a sexual content.

  • You guys do realize this is an RPG made by Bioware, right? And that there's therefor a 90% chance it will be excellent, right? All these nay-sayers are going to loook pretty silly when the game comes out and totally rocks.

  • I always like to speculate about future releases, but where does all that hate come from? I mean, there's like 15 still screens of the game and we have no precedents of a sonic RPG or portable Bioware games...

I'll know if I like it when I play it.

  • @eastx: Well, on the other hand, Sonic hasn't fared quite that good with spinoffs like Mario did. And Bioware hasn't really made itself a name on the DS yet.

Bottom line, I'm sceptic, but I'll probably pick it up because the DS could use some RPGs that aren't remakes or worse than their GBA prequels.

  • Well, it this game bombs it will definitely be Bioware's first failure.

That being said, who ever is blasting this game is a moron (no offense).

    1. Is is a DS game. Dont expect next gen graphics, IT IS A DS GAME! And for a DS game and a 2D RPG game, the graphics aren't amazing, but the scenery looks really artistic and actually really good.

    2. It is made by Bioware on a familiar story. Unless you are just biased against Sonic because all of the shitty 3D games SEGA has made, you should have no objections to this game. You should be blasting Unlimited more then this game due to the history of crappy SEGA 3D Sonic games.

    3. The game isnt even out yet! STFU about how much it is going to suck until it comes out. I believe Bioware knows what they are doing, and judging by the games they release, I wouldnt expect a terrible game. They just would not put their name on a complete failure bringing down their average score on their games.

  • Wait wait, it seemed before everyone was happy for this game. Where did the hate come from? Personally, I can't wait. Bioware and Sonic, sounds like a good combination to me. It's on the DS, so I'm hoping for an awesome old school-esque RPG.

  • @Foxstar Sixtail: sure, a good game developer like bioware could get the rpg gameplay side of the game right, what i meant though is that i have a strong dislike for pretty much all sonic characters and it seems like there´s generally few fans of other characters than sonic, knuckles, tails and robotnik. Sure,in the mario franchise/universe there are meanwhile various "not that great" (heavily uninspired) characters, too, like "waluigi" but on the other side there is a huge array of likable characters, so more than enough to make a game where many of em can appear in chameo roles and that is loved by millions. Sonic on the other side, dunno. I feel like in both the Sonic and Mario franchises they´ve somehow mostly lost the creative touch when its about creating many new additional likable characters per game, its just that in the sonic games there were was a way smaller amount of good characters in the early games, too,so going further downhill from that level isn´t really any good.
Well, maybe Bioware can come up with some cool new characters :) Too bad they will probably have to keep all the crappy ones, too.

  • Seems the hedgehog might FINALLY be turning the corner back to respectability and, dare we hope?, platforming greatness. It seems someone at Sega finally realized how polluted this franchise had become and are looking for help from the West. I really like the look of thisthing so far. Just like with Superstar saga and Mario, a RPG with Sonic can potentially be cool just because of the world and characters. I have to admit it makes me chuckle that the stuck the sub-title "Dark Brotherhood" in there. Cue the Sonic in Oblivion mods!

  • I'm betting that this will be a far better game than the upcoming 360/PS3 Sonic game. Nice screenshots mean nothing... the last "next gen" Sonic game was one of the worst games in recent memory. Sonic games on Nintendo handhelds and Bioware both have good track records.

  • @tomsamson: After HK-47, I'm willing to let Bioware create all of the new characters they want.

The question, I guess, is how many of the Sonic characters will be important in the game. We know that Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy are almost guaranteed to be prominent, but beyond that...well, that's about it. If nobody likes Big the Cat but his only appearance is in a fishing minigame or behind the counter in a shop, is that really so bad?

This game is going to be completely different from any of the other Sonic games we've seen so far, so it's not fair to compare it to a series of platformers. I'd probably get ripped apart if I tried comparing Super Mario RPG and Super Mario World because the two games have nothing in common but the characters, and that's going to be the case here as well.

  • Jeez guys c'mon! its fucking Bioware!! It seems to me that if this was a Mario RPG developed by Bioware everybody would be looking forward to it but since its Sonic "oohh noes he,z abot runig fast loz suckz" Well you tell me who'd you'd rather make this make?

Sonic Team Japan who since 2002 have made:
Sonic Pinball Party, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Puyo Pop Fever, Astro Boy, Sega SuperStars, Puyo Pop Fever 2, Phantasy Star Universe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary

    Orrrr Bioware:
    Neverwinter Nights
    Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide
Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark
    Neverwinter Nights: Kingmaker
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
    Jade Empire
    Mass Effect

Well I think the answers pretty obvious

  • That screen there made me look at it and go, "Sonic Crossing?"

  • Hi, i'm an idiot
i will write that this game is going to suck
    i am an idiot
    thanks

  • I'm looking forward to this despite all the flack it seems to be receiving from Kotakuites...*not surprised*

  • Bioware can do no wrong.

    Bioware is making this game.

    This game cannot go wrong.

    ...end of story.

  • @spiderweb1986: yeah, that Bioware is doing it is the one thing that gives me hope there *could* be some cool new characters and the gameplay could become nice :)
you know what would be really cool? if the story involves that one of the really ugly old characters dies (and sega really never brings that one back later then). Like shadow the hedgehog ;)

  • Oh and just for the record I count at least SIX Mario RPG games: Mario RPG (SNES), Paper Mario (N64), Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga (GBA), Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Gamecube), Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (DS), Super Paper Mario (Wii). I'm not going to count "Mario is Missing" or other terrible spin-offs, but I do personally believe that Bioware is capable of making an awesome Sonic RPG. Here's to hoping...

  • @goomba478: Mario is missing was horrible edutainment. Super Paper Mario wasn't That much of an RPG, but an RPG nonetheless.

I saw some screens in Play Magazine, don't know if those are new are not... Guessing not.

  • I'm glad to see it's not an pseudo-real-time turn-based battle system. I'm hoping they keep it simply (but interesting... like Mario RPGs do with the timed hits).

Also, I hope the writing and story isn't too serious. Good, but funny and original, like Paper Mario's... but different still, obviously.

I also hope there's not TOO much dialogue and shit to read. I mean, it's Sonic... I'm only going to care so much no matter what.

  • I've no idea why everyone is so worried about this Sonic RPG. Everyone gets that he's not. . geared towards that genre, but neither was Mario up until 1996 when it was proven that he could handle it. I mean. . it's from BIOWARE. If that's not enough to give one confidence, I don't know what is.

  • Sonic's tarnished name can only go up if it's in the hands of Bioware. I mean, sonic's really hit rock bottom. If there were a "the later years" for sonic at this point in life, he'd be living beside a dumpster chugging back a bottle of booze wrapped up in a paper bag. Such a great mascot killed in his prime. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to crying myself to sleep.

Took awhile, but the people who know Bioware finally enter this post.

Seriously... Its Bioware... Expect DS GOTY... possibly.

  • Looks ugly, but then again, I didn't get a DS because of super awesome graphics.

  • I'll probably pick this up since I'll try any RPG at least once and since Bioware is doing it I'm hoping its going to be good. On topic with the screen shots the first one with Sonic standing in front of a house reminds me of Mario's house in all his RPGs.

  • I seriously can't wrap my head around how a game like this could be anything but crap, on the other hand Bioware is making it so i know its gonna be atleast decent... *head explodes*

  • I have high hopes for this game. The atmosphere looks good with two screens. If you look at just the bottom screen, you'd probably think it's dumb, but with a map displayed on the top, it looks pretty cool.

Also, Bioware has a good reputation for a reason. They release good games, end of story. Even if this game doesn't do much good for the Sonic franchise, I think it may be one of those games that could be made without the name stamped on it and be good.

  • I enjoyed "Partners in Time", sort of. I decided I wasn't going to play another jrpg, but I did enjoy my time with it. Given that, and the fact that this is developed by Bioware makes me interested in this game, if not "excited" about it. I'm certainly more interested in this game than "Unleashed".

  • This game creates such conflicting emotions within me. The thought of ever playing another Sonic game without a blood oath from a close trusted friend assuring me the game is good makes me want to curl up and die...but its an RPG by Bioware. As unnecessary as this game is, I will probably give it a shot just because of who is making it.

I suppose this makes me a Bioware fanboy.
Let's just hope they don't screw it up.
    *Sigh*

  • damnit, theres a human present. There goes my enthusiasim.

  • Bah!

I would have loved to have seen Bioware themselves make a new cast of characters.

Rouge the Bat and Big the Cat can suck my leftie.

But still........ I soooooooooo want Sonic to be good again. You'd think Bioware can do it. But these screens don't exactly fill me with hope.

  • Bioware has never made a simple, "handheld-friendly" RPG before. I really have no idea what to expect from a game like this. I love Bioware's games, but I can't see how this will resemble their other games at all.

The reason for the hate is obvious though: who the hell wants an RPG starring Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends? The only ones who want to learn more about Sonic and Pals are furries and men in childrens' bodies who haven't matured past 7th grade.

  • @Robbotron: It's a DS game and Sonic titles are about gameplay, not graphics.

  • Looking forward to this one, very much.

Love Bioware. Love Sonic. Sounds perfect to me. And yes, Mario has pulled off the RPG, why not sonic?

As it stands, Unleashed just looks like a prettied-up version of Secret Rings. I'll reserve judgment until
    a) We see some actual confirmed gameplay and
    b) Unleashed is actually confirmed as nothing more than a fanboy creation.

  • Bioware. I'm buying it.

  • It's Bioware, so I'm buying it probably. But while I have confidence in their RPG abilities, I'm worried about adapting the otherwise fast paced Sonic the Hedgehog into a game where you can sit there all day and decide the best course of action.
