Xbox Live Arcade Gets TiQal Ish This Week

Is this the week of Ikaruga for Xbox Live Arcade? Hell no! It's TiQal's time to shine. This Wednesday, the Slapdash Games created puzzler hits XBLA, bringing color-matching, block-clearing gameplay with a Mayan theme to the masses. It's 800 Microsoft Points and is "sure to delight fans of the puzzle game genre" according to the press release. I have strong faith in press releases and haven't been lied to by one yet.

This Wednesday also brings with it an update to Switchball, promising improved graphics and buttery smooth gameplay. Okay, great, now make with the Ikaruga already.

  • Err.....so in other words Ikaruge isn't out yet

  • Thank God. Ive been asking myself weekly "When is XBLA going to get a good puzzle game?"...............{crickets}.....................................{tumbleweed}

  • I really miss Ikaruga. GTA:SA's Duality, anyone?

  • I think the really important question is: When is Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball coming out?

  • press releases also do not lie to me, because they are inanimate objects, however, the people who write them tend to :)

  • T_T
I wanted some songs for Rock Band, so I decided to hit myself up with 400MS points, but I accidentally chose something higher, so I'm like, "Oh well, I guess I'll hold off on spending and see what the arcade brings this week"

Fuck it, I'm spending these points on something else.

  • Meh, it's not Crecente, but close enough. Here's a Battlefield: Bad Company Beta key. Grab it quick!

    @Lixie: I would if I had a 360. :P

  • @Lixie:
I typed that in so freakin' fast....
    On the drums too!
( I was in the middle of a kick-ass rock session)

  • Is this the kind of crap those two guys were bitching about last week?

  • Were you the first?

  • @scotty: The download will take awhile. And how were you reading Kotaku during a rock session?

  • Why would anyone make a puzzle game? I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but they're so boring...there are exceptions, yes (Meteos was a blast), but I'd rather play a decent sidescrolling shooter/platformer or whatnot.

Indie games can be neat, but...sometimes I feel like they're either trying too hard (Srcewjumper...I mean, what the hell?) or not hard enough (Aegis Wing, but, to be fair, that was free >.>;).

If I remember correctly, Geometry Wars has been the only non-port XBLA game I've bought and enjoyed. Does that mean every game on there should be a port? Probably not, but damn, at least take a page from them. Simple, tight controlled fun. And let's get some more 2d games. I can't be alone in prefering a well done sprite to a crappy model.

  • Hey, I like Switchball >:( I take offense to that!

  • @Modus_Operandi: Damn, you beat me to it.

Someone needs to get these developers to broaden their horizons and think beyond matching three in a row of X (cards, blocks, gems, bunnies) with the only variation being the way pieces are played onto the field.

Of course then they'll move straight to a twin-stick, Robotron-style shooter. (urg)

How about some nice strategy/board-game type games? Who do I have to see about making a version of Battlelore, Memoir '44, Ra, or Domaine for XBLA? Or you could mine wonderful, neglected IPs and bring us slick HD versions of classics like Guardian Heroes or Blaster Master. How about one of the classic Genesis Disney games (Aladdin) - think of the crossover casual appeal.

    C'mon people!

  • @Lixie:

I was in the middle of "When You Were Young"
(There's nothing to do in the middle)
    Good song, really.

But yeah, I was first. Download is taking forever just like you said.
Thanks alot man, you really surprised me with that comment.

  • @diablodevil2:
Yep, just checked. The only non-port game I bought other then GW was Small Arms, and I haven't played that in a looong time. Lame.

  • Can't argue with buttery smooth gameplay! That's my favorite kind!

  • Oh, another puzzle game. Look at that.

  • Give me Duke Nukem 3d live now!

  • Am I the only one who saw TiQal and immediately thought of Method man?

    Just me?

  • @diablodevil2: "Why would anyone make a puzzle game? I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but they're so boring...there are exceptions, yes (Meteos was a blast), "
You could say that about every game genre "All FPS's are boring...except for this really good one". You can actually say that about most things. "Why would anyone make a movie? There almost always crap...except for the last good one!" Think of it this way- half of everything is below average.

  • errrr....

i'm so ready for Ikaruga to come out on XBLA!

i've been LF it on GC for the past 2 years with no luck.

  • Isn't "Tical" like Method Man's catchphrase?

    Totally unrelated I'm sure

  • Hey, you guys need to stop with all the hate for this game! This can not come out quick enough. Can't wait to buy it!

I kid, I kid. I actually really hate puzzle games. You know how much I hate them? I hate Tetris. Didn't think there was some one in this world that hated that game did you?

  • Image of Scazza Scazza at 05:59 PM on 03/24/08 *

Man, enough of these gawdaful puzzle games each week. Yeah, casual gaming is nice, but no casual gamer needs 300 different versions of tetris or zuma.

If you ask me, I would prefer no release every Wednesday to a puzzle game each bloody week.

  • I could have sworn Switchball has already been updated. I remember downloading one a while ago and all the very, incredibly noticable screen-tearing was virtually non-existent now and general performance was vastly improved.

I guess more improvement isn't a bad thing.

  • I saw Ikaruga and my heart jumped in excitement.

Damn you, McWhertor! Make it be here yesterday!

  • @Dioxen: I downloaded it this weekend (my girlfriend thought the ball was 'cute') and it was fine, seemed glitch free. It's a cracking little puzzle game as well.

  • why don't you guys play the game before calling it tetris jr? this game is so much better than tetris in every way. for the folks who simply play the demo, it gets MUCH MUCH MUCH more difficult (the pieces are not just the 4 block tetris clones every schmuck has claimed), the power ups you earn get much cooler, the co-op is a blast and overall the game becomes addicting and extremely challenging as you progress. yes, it takes awhile for the game to climax but once it does it hits you like a ton of bricks. This is a MUST-download for anyone who enjoys a well-developed puzzle game. THIS IS NOT A ZUMA OR TETRIS WANNABE, IT IS ITS OWN ENTITY.
