Here's the first set of screenies for the upcoming sequel to Persona 3, the aptly named Persona 4. Between these and the trailers that popped up last week, it doesn't look like Atlus is straying too far from the formula that made P3 such a success. Just some subtle graphics tweaking and interface style changes, wrapped around a whole new story and 60-70 hours of gameplay goodness. I would have been satisfied with them simply adding bonus material to P3. Oh wait.

It still looks oh so lovely though <33
is this coming to the PS3? If not i have no way of enjoying it...
Atlus ftw!!
Why are the talking lips from the Dairy Queen commercials attacking that kid? I bet they got fired.
Ahh I'm so excited! Persona FTW
all that yellow looks very tacky.
@ArmyofJuan:
Playsation 2 :)
@ArmyofJuan: PS2, can't PS3 backwards-compat? Saddy if it can't.
I'm glad they tweaked the graphics when I heard they were using PS2 for P4 I thought for sure they would just use P3 Graphics with new character models but it looks a lot better. It also seems like the anime Cut scenes having higher production values as well. I can't wait. Only thing that has me worried is the 60-70 hrs of game play Persona 3 was about 100hrs at a brisk pace and I thought it was great at a time that most RPG's fear to be to long. I hope we don't have to wait to long for P4 it would be great to go from P3 Fes right into P4.
@Reibooi: Apparently the crew that's doing the trinity soul series is doing the cutscenes for P4.
Also, the game is supposed to be one-and-a-half times as long as P3.
Hey there PS2, I thought you died. Well, guess I was wrong. Life support feels good eh? ;)
I got the special disc that came with the famitsu, didnt watch it yet tho.
I was hoping that during the conversation screens, they would add more animation/movement to the character art. But all they do is blink.
I'm glad KISS made it into the video game.
@Witzbold: It's the same stuff that was shown here a few days back, I believe. A high-rez copy has been posted on the usual forums.
@onidavin: Some can, some can't. And then some can do it really well through hardware, and then some do it through emulation which is somewhat spotty.
It's a messy situation.
Oh, Persona 3. It's such a crime that I've had you for months, and have yet to play you. I'll do so eventually. Especially before Persona 4 comes out. Damn, my lack of time for good RPG's.
Man, after 2007 was so underwhelming, 2008 is such an awesome year for JRPG's. I'm going to be so broke and without any amount of time for all these once grad school starts...
Persona 5 better on the PS3, I love this series so much I need it in HD!
@onidavin: Yeah I know the disc has the trailer on it. Not sure what else though.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: @onidavin:
hot damn. it can, but mine can't. i bought the 40 gig where backwards compat is a no no. Maybe one day it will be in the PSS
Certainly one of the top 3 ps2 RPGs and I'll definitely go back a gen to buy this.
As far as it being too long and things changing in the world of RPGs -- Atlus is still old school -- and thank god for that.
Excited. Much excited.
Probably won't be getting this till Christmas or even into 09 though.
At least i'll have FES to hold me over.
When's the new P3 out? Never played that.
@Setzer IIDX: FES comes out April 22nd.
Goody, another MegaTen timesink. I always need more of those!
Now here's hoping the personal stat boosting activities aren't as monotonous this time. I really got sick of having to give up nights of dungeon crawling to go sing karaoke. At least some kind of amusing cutscene every time I did that would have been nice!
*drools*
...
...
...
er, huh?
P4.....
*drools*
anything like the P3 it should kick ass.
I'm down with this. I'm just hoping they have as good a soundtrack as P3. The music added a lot to that game for me.
OH CRUD! LANGOLIERS! RUN!!
The weather feature looks like a nice change-up. I must say I'm not enjoying the character designs as much as P3's, though. Everyone looks kind of...dull!
Do-not-like that new menu. Everything else looks great, but that battle menu keeps glaring out at me. I hope it's just a placeholder in the current build.
Do-not-want that new menu. Everything else looks great, but that battle menu keeps glaring out at me. I hope it's just a placeholder in the current build.
I liked the circle like command prompt better, but as long as it plays good, I wonder if that *command* around the main character's avatar means we can take control of more than one character
Aren't these magazine scans?
@Jim Reilly: And?
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
I'm not sure I like the interface.
It reminds me of a magazine layout.
I kind of like the new design, Persona 3 cought my attention for many reasons and one of them was its menus and battle menus even were artistic or diffrent even if it was just the simple pills comming down at the medication store in the mall it was a graphic look. The circle is pretty intresting as thats what should catch your attention and what you are allways going to look at for the most part but its kinda simple way to have forward thinking in design instead of just going with the simple box design all rpgs go with. Myself loving art and being who I am this serise and the design of the clothes grabs my attention.
I REALLY want one of these on my PSP. I feel like I have more time to play RPG's on my portable systems as opposed to my TV now that I'm married.
I think for whats out crisis core sounds like the way to go for psp and with ds I would say etrian odyssey or ff3
@NegativeGhostrider:
YES. I have so much dead time when commuting and between classes/during slow days at work that I've sunk dozens of hours into my portable RPGs but almost none on my consoles. I've been wanting to play Persona 3 but can't really justify buying it when I still have FF12, Eternal Sonata and Mass Effect sitting around.
@concrete_d: Story-wise and gameplay-wise, P3 beats FF12 and ES quite easily. Do yourself a favor and play it!
The wait begins... Will North America be seeing this game before 2009?
Today I wanted to spend some time with P3, but after another hour of random battles without noticable progress in the story I just had to stop because of this nagging feeling that I´m wasting my life. :D
So please, please, no more endless random dungeons, okay? 30 hours of unique gameplay beats 100 hours of repetitive dungeon-crawling.
@cio:
What about Europe? EEEUROOOPE!!!!!
Mick Jagger's lawyer could not be reached for comment.
@onidavin: Do not like trinity soul! I don't know its not very appealing. I'm talking about the writing however, which im sure will be done by whoever did p3, and that's fine by me. OH HELLS YEAH
@Witzbold: Littering /and/!?
The year is Q2 2008. I know this is "only" a PS2 game... but will they at last go around to make this series in widescreen mode?
My bottom dollar says no.
This looks so awesome. Atmosphere feels really polished from the screenshots! I agree with what some people said about the new battle menu, though: when I glanced at the screenshot I thought it was a giant yellow sticker or something. I suppose it makes it a bit clearer to select the command you want, but I really liked the icons of P3! Can't wait for this, if an English localisation comes out within this year, I'll be super happy.
OMG, cant wait!
Is anyone else reminded of Oblina from Ahh! Real Monsters?
