The wait for more Final Fantasy VII is almost over for North American gamers, as this week's biggest drop is arguably Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. It joins a pair of well known ninja in the week's new releases, which is also heavy on action and real-time strategy. A slew of Wii shovelware hits, excluded from our list of new releases, but there's something for everyone!
Let us know what you're picking up this week in the comments.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (PSP)
This fanfic fodder prequel to the PS One classic Final Fantasy VII makes its way stateside.
Dark Sector (PS3, Xbox 360)
Sci-fi. Third-person shooter. Black ops. Krull.
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword (DS)
Team Ninja brings stylus stabbing action to the DS.
Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath (PC)

The RTS harvests a 360 port.

The waggle puzzler with a Puyo Puyo pedigree.
Harvest Moon DS Cute (DS)
More farming, role-playing fun, with extra cuteness for girls.

Hmm...Dark Sector first person? Nice. And by nice, I mean wholly inaccurate. Reference aside.
since when is dark sector an fps?
Hmm, finally got a job again, it's nice to know that when I get around to buying a psp that crisis core will be out, looked pretty good from previews I've been seeing.
Ok. So. Get Crisis Core. You won't be disappointed. Promise. No, Go. NOW. Or...Tuesday rather.
cc:ff7, dark sector and kane's wrath for me. also dark sectors a third person shooter just thought i'd point that out.
I might pick up Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, but I haven't decided yet.
I have been playing through Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for about a week now and it is amazingly done. I suggest every one who likes rpgs to grab a copy.
CC: FFVII, I'll finish it one setting.
Damn it, I want Crisis Core! Can't really shell out any cash at the moment, so I'ma have to wait.
It is cool to see both the PSP and DS get a big title each. Question is....Zack or Ryu?
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword BABY!!!
They even gave it the DS subname!! ah bless!!
oohh looks like my friend might get his PSP stolen for a few days with crisis core coming out...no coincidence
Yea, i am picking up Crisis Core and Viking. Play mag gave it a 9.5 which is probably high but I love Norse Mythology and it looks pretty fun.
I'll be getting Crisis Core. Got a $20.00 best buy reward zone giftcard, might as well use it for that.
Octomania
brought to you by the people who've made such classics as
Action Girlz Racing
Anubis II
Billy the Wizard
Cocoto Magic Circus
Counter Force
Mini Desktop Racing
Monster Trux Arenas SE
Ninjabread Man
Dark Sector is a third person shooter...
Crisis Core snuck up on me, didn't realize it came out this week.
Of course I never finished FFVII, so I probably shouldn't play it anyway....
Yeah I had an N64 when I was a kid, I only bought FFVII a few years ago and never got around to finishing it. Go ahead and scoff...
@excel_excel:
What are you talking about aren't those games amazing.......mmmmmm.....portzzzz...
I'm sooooo giddy about crisis core. Should I be? Maybe not. But alas, YIPEEEE!
Two great must have handheld games on competing systems. I am excited to get both titles and of course im not referring to Harvest Moon!!!
@ghnvt: Oh instant classics
@JimElNino: well crisis core is a prequel so it could fill you in on some FF7 stuff
Just bought a PSP this week. And I couldn't be any less interested in CC than I already am.
Square is trying my patience. How do you know when you have milked the cow too much? When the cow itself gets sucked into the milking machine.
Forgot Kane's Wrath was coming out this week... looks like I've got something new to play! Fun!
Crisis Core is basic. Only get it if you're interested in the sub-story, because gameplay-wise, it's very dissapointing.
No brainer for me, Crisis Core baby! Ninja Gaiden for ds can wait till May and i still need a little convincing for Dark Sector and Viking: Battle for Asgard both for PS3.
@JimElNino: Bah dont worry Crisis Core is before regular VII so it will gie you the back story and that could help motivate you to beat regular VII.
I KNOW for a fact that i will get Crisis Core some time this week along with that little UMD cover.
OR GOD help those poor poor little bastards at the store where i shop if i dont get my fanboy needs filled.
So I pirated the game already, and it's actually a lot better than I thought, even having tried the Japanese version previously. The combat is more fun now that I know what I'm doing (though it's not exactly Kingdom Hearts), and the story is very well presented, though a little baffling at times. I would have liked to play as the other SOLDIER members, and having the same sword through the entire game is a little weird, but nevertheless, it's hard to have any real complaints about Crisis Core.
Like so many others have already said, this is one of few games that make it worth having a PSP.
9/10
@Draylorn: You've pirated it already?! Man...couldn't you just save your pennies and buy it?! Sheesh.
@Ashurahori: Yea, I also think the gameplay was lacking, very repetitive... But hey, almost everything else was EXCELLENT. Voice acting, FMVs, story.. Awesome.
So, if you're a fan of FFVII, I really recommend the game. The story tells alot and tells it beautifully.
I can't wait to unveil some more of the C&C storyline next week. KANE LIVES!
Oh god, the title makes me crave another Gradius game. :(
And maybe I'm the only one, but I think the new Ninja Gaiden looks awful.
So...Darksector looks pretty sweet, after i checked out the guide book.
Hmm, Crisis Core. Last year I looked at it as being the reason for me to finally get a PSP (It reminded me of Kingdom Hearts and I'm a KH whore). The graphics are absolutely scrumptious but I'm hearing it's a one-, no, Win-button game. I think I'll pass. Gameplay trumps graphics when it comes to handhelds for me. I think I'll be playing Dragon Sword this week when not playing Brawl and CoD4. The touch controls are intriguing and I just have to see it they work.
Yup, looks like I'm still not shelling out for a PSP just y-*Remembers sweet-ass red PSP coming soon*
I'll be picking up Crisis Core myself. I am really happy with all the positive reviews it has been getting.
I just bought a PSP yesterday from a friend, but oddly enough not for Crisis Core. Spin-off stories in general don't float my boat. To me they come off as forced.. and I can never shake that "Cash in" feeling. It's a feeling that hit it's peak around the time "Dirge" came out.
But I digress, Patapon here I come!
I am getting Crisis Core but recently I also have been looking at Viking. At first it didn't interest me but I can't say that is the truth now.
Crisis Core... It's fun at first but then you start realizing it falls short on many points: poor level design and no "exp" system, instead it revolves around the DMW, which is the worst idea I've ever seen in an action RPG...
Well i'v been eyeing Viking for a while now so i'll probably pick that up this week. I'll wait on Dark Sector and Universe at War though.
@JimElNino: Scoff? Never. I've played all of the eleven "real" Final Fantasies. Finished none, came close on a few. And I consider myself pretty "into" RPGs. That is, I have played numerous other RPGs to completion.
I'm getting NG:Dragon Sword. Thanks to whomever gave the heads-up on "free Dragon Sword with purchase." Pre-order, rather.
No love for command and conquer? must have been outted by dawn of war and sins of a solar empire...
I like the DMW to an extent, but I really have to admit... I MISS THE EXPERIENCE POINTS, MY FELLOW PARTY MEMBERS, AND EXPERIENCE POINTS.
@Yeux de nouilles:
Glad i'm not the only one who got that lol Good one. I imported Crisis Core and it's a really solid game. Like someone stated, it does get rather repetitive, but it's a worth addition to the series. It tries something new and i think it worked out really well. the game looks phenomenal as well. Those guys at Squenix are Texture Gods.
I've been sold on Dark Sector lately. If the reviews don't thrash it and average an 8 or higher I'll definitely be picking it up for PS3. The PS3 game drought is finally coming to an end!
also, Koei is releasing Warriors Orochi for the PSP this week
So can anyone confirm if Ninja Gaiden:DS is only a 4-hour game. If so, I'll pass.
Ya know I'm actually really interested in Universe at War. It looked kind of interesting if not unique but my interest for something like that's really been piqued with all the SC2 media out there lately. Hopefully the controls have really nailed it as tightly as some have made it sound.
@cebukid: The early reviews from like IGN weren't saying quite that short I don't think but I remember it definitely was single digits.
Dark Sector of me this week
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP, there is a special secret at the end that is very temping to hope and see.
I'll be picking up Crisis Core this week. I'm always a stickler for good RPG-ness, regardless of platform. We'll see how long it holds my interest!
@cebukid:
Reviewers are saying 4-6 hours for easy mode... then you unlock hard mode. And it's replay factor is one of the highest on the DS (or so I've heard).
for
Mental note published on the internet: look up what "first-person shooter" means.
If I had money, I'd be checking out Gaiden on the DS, just to play with it and see just how well the touch controls are. And, even though I absolutely disliked FF7, I'd probably check out Crisis Core too, just to see if a much more updated look and a (hopefully) more finely honed story/characters would make me change my mind about FF7 as a whole.
I'm just glad it doesn't suck, like the rest of the FFVII spinoffs.
