I'm drooling everywhere....somebody get a towel
I may have to bust out my ps1 and snes star ocean and give em a quick playthrough just in fond memories.
Second Story was the one the anime was based on disc 1 of, right?
I would actually consider getting a PSP for this, which says a lot.
Now if only Square would stop side-stepping around those FFVII, VIII, and (maybe) IX remakes.
Hopefully, this will get a US release. I have to admit, though ... Star Ocean for the PS2 is still sitting on my shelf unopened; I'll get to it someday, I promise!
Man, I didn't even know this existed until now. Star Ocean 2 for PS1 was my fav of the series and one of my fav rpgs on the system outside of the FF games. This better be making its way across the pond.
Unlike a lot of JRPG's this game was really different and fun. I can't wait for a US release.
Please come out in the U.S., Please come out in the U.S., PLEASE COME OUT IN THE U.S.!!!
Loved this game on the PS1, I'll make a double dip for it!
The original is fantastic. Very much based in enjoying the characters you played with via the optional events.
Also Chisato was extremely for the win with some Blood Armor and the Funny Slayer. UNF.
Everyone knows Ashcraft loves doing game translations. He loves it when readers mass-mail him for them. =D
can't wait-i hope square remains true to their word and tries to release it in us soon not like crisis core which came out a billion years later....
Square is really into portables these days while their AAA titles for consoles get delayed over and over. :(
Never got a chance to play any of the Star Ocean series. I might just pick this one up along with its predecessor.
@DigitalHero: Hahah yeah thats true. At this rate KH for the PSP and DS will come out before FF XIII.
Please US version and while you are at it a PS3 version wouldn't be that bad
why are the good PSP games never ported to Wii?
really liked the first game. very early ps1 jrpg that really delivered in terms of length and depth. hopefully this sees a stateside release.
@Sandbox_Emperor: You just made me cry cause that made me think about locoroco for the wii...waaaaaah
That... was absolutely gorgeous.
I... I actually cried just now, it was so beautiful.
Can't wait....I actually want to go bust open my PS1 copy again and play it. The voice work was horrible then. Still, it is one of my top 3 favorite RPGs. Any news on when it is coming stateside?
@Sandbox_Emperor: Probably because of the hardware limitations LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL oh God, I don't even mean that. I HAVE a Wii.
...
::looks at PSP::
You've been soooo good to me...I love you.
I really like the old rpg games that are out there like Lunar and Star Ocean so its good to see them being remade with some updates to them making them more appealing to a wider range of people.
hahah they called him crawd. what an weird name. fantastic.
other than that i can't wait for this to come out in the states (it better >:( ) especially since after moved, a box of ps1 games went missing, this game included in that box (along with lunar silver star story complete and lunar two eternal blue complete :( )
but yeah i hope this comes over looks like good times >^.^<
"At this point if you are a JRPG fan and don't own a PSP you are missing out on an amazing crop of games. "
I'm a JRPG fan AND psp owner, and I'm not sure what games are in this "amazing crop". Besides Crisis Core and the remakes of Final Fantasy, what exactly am I missing?
I loved the original version and will most definitely pick up this game when it comes out. And yeah, I noticed the Crawd thing too. It's supposed to be Claude Kenny. Oh well.
...April Fools? Nah, they wouldn't be THAT dochebaggy.
@Ichidou: Disgaea and Brave Story: New Traveler. Ys VI: The Ark of Naphishtim can count too, if you don't own it on the PS2 already, though it did suffer a bit in the port.
I'm probably forgetting a few. But with Star Ocean 1 AND 2 coming out for the PSP (Hopefully in the US), the crop certainly got a bit sweeter.
@Ichidou: Same here.I've owned a PSP since it came out and there hasn't been JRPG games worth buying on it.
@PTTSeven: Valkyrie Profile! Don't forget that ;)
"10 seconds" and "I'm so HAPPY!" are easily some of the greatest lines ever in Star Ocean 2. I never really liked that game, but I'll give it a second chance if (when) this remake comes stateside.
With the Production I.G - the great studio behind Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, IGPX and Blood+ - created intro, the parallels between Star Ocean and the Tales Of series are becoming more evident than ever. Those franchises truly are "cousins".
Looks nice. Wish Square would announce this and the first one for localization soon. I'm not fond of the new art style but I'll live. The anime had the best designs in that regard though.
Rocket punnnnn-rocket-ro-ro-ro-ro-rocket-rocket punnnch-rocket puuunch!!!
Crawd has advanced forward!
Rena getting possessed by a Japanese woman saying tractor beam~
Bunny shoes ftw :(
I always thought the spell combining and leveling up thing was neat ._.
I still gotta beat the first star ocean on the PSP. D:
Its nice to see Production I.G. heading up the animation in game tho!
I spent so much time with the original manufacturing, cooking, etc, that to go back to it through this version now I just wouldn't be able to do justice to the whole product :(.
If these two remakes came to the US I would probably buy a PSP.
I LOVE this game. Took me forever to beat it but it is one of my all time favorites. They seriously need to do a US release. I lost disc one for this game somehow, and have beendying to play it ever since.
I want so much... The characters look a bit more... wide than I remember (from both the game and the anime) but not that I care. Can't wait to getting back to 'Tear into pieces!' or however that went. Godly once you got maxed it. Hope that we get Japanese voices, or at least new English voices. I'm sure we all remember just how horrible the original was. Hoping that if they port this over here, it won't go the way of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and stick back in the same old crappy voices...
Man, I'm so psyched! Really crossing my fingers for a quality port to America!!! Either that, or my Japanese education will have to take a step up so I can read it as well as I understand it...
Star Ocean 2 is one of THE BEST RPGs I have EVER played, and I've played a LOT. Watching this trailer almost made me want to cry. I'm sure the new animated scenes will help make it even better. Cant wait, but damn, First Departure isnt even out in the West yet :(
Star Ocean: Second Story is a wonderful game, especially with a skill system that isn't purely combat skills. The only think I don't like about the game is that later bosses are just ridiculously hard.
Wonder what animation studio did the cutscenes. The style looks like Gonzo or Bones. Though it could be Madhouse seeing as Last Order was done by them.
Looks like the same studio who did the Star Ocean anime.
@Black-Dog-Howls: Did you not see my comment about it being Production I.G.
Damn, I really need this and the remake of the original. Square Enix really needs to get on the ball with these translations. These, and the DS DQ remakes would make me a very happy Magic Emperor.
I would love to relive kicking the Ten Wisemen's ass.
@Witzbold: Actually, no. XD I spent most of my night catching up with One Piece up to chapter 493 from 350 so I'm a bit out of it. Days off are fun.
Wow, just seeing the cutscenes makes me want to buy the game. . .
For those of you who have played this, I loved this game. unfortunately, I couldn't beat it. The "final" bosses are RIDICULOUS. Like, you are fine the whole way through, and you would think you would only have to level a little bit to beat the bosses. No. I was level 70ish and reading a guide online suggested I should be like level 150+. I will never understand that. If I had a PSP, however, I would definitely purchase this game.
@skitzogreg: Same here. This is probably the only JRPG I've ever played (out of like 50) where I didn't beat it, for that same reason. I loved the game, but I don't know who thought it was a good idea to tack on an extra 20 hours of level grinding once you get to the end just to beat the bosses.
I loved it when I used the medal of a hero trick to get claud to lvl 100 early on so i could fight dias in the tournament. Also the fact i never knew you could save outside until halfway through, caused me many problems. lol
If this game comes out in the US, I just might buy a PSP for it. There have been a lot of games coming out that have been getting my attention. I feel like I might... Might need to take the plunge.
Hell, I already own 4 PSP games but I don't even have a PSP.
I have Tales of Eternia for my PSP (There's a UK release in English... so, yay.) but I would much love to have a great RPG like Star Ocean 2 on there... in the states. As well as Star Ocean: First Departure. If it's the case that First Departure comes to the states, it's likely that Second Evolution will follow, and probably a while afterwards build up to Star Ocean 4 maybe? Like the release of Valkyrie Profile 2 and VP: Lenneth on PSP? I wonder... Anyway, I love Tri-Ace's stuff.
Dear Squeenix,
Let's be honest, we haven't hung out lately. I get it. I totally miss you too. I mean, I'd pick up a PSP and all, I'd still take that shiny, slim bullet for you. No problem.
It's just not the same. We've grown apart. Half of you knows that I played the hell out of this game back on the psx (damn kids still calling it "ps1," or "psone"). I loved it. It's in my top two favorites. I know you aren't going to work your ass off to port one of these psx gems to the DS, if it would even work. That's cool I understand it.
I just can't see us hanging out anymore. You've been tough to read. Those anime cut-scenes, I can deal with that. It IS an rpg, usually comes standard. But don't ever pull that Dias BS on me again. I saw it, don't try to hide the fact that you "Sephiroth'd" him in front of the fire in that town. I watched the clip seven times, I just couldn't believe you'd do it.
Do you not have faith anymore, Squeenix? Do you think this game won't sell or something? Does EVERYTHING need the FFVII treatment now?
Look, I know if we both worked at it, we can make it through this. But we BOTH need to work. Maybe you can start with a better selling handheld platform, that I actually own. It's like you're asking me to go cosmic bowling in hell. Come on man, I love cosmic bowling, but it's HELL. You've got to understand these unrealistic expectations.
-Mike
PS: I won't even get started about The World Ends With You, but you're getting lazy, man.
Please oh please bring this one over... Patapon and FFT need a friend.
I find it funny that the only thing that sold me (and seemingly many others) on the PSP is the remakes/ports of older games such as Tactics, Castlevania X, and a few others.. but I still love you Sony, donut worry.
My username can only contain 5% of my excitement for this game. It and MHFreedom are the reasons I brought a PSP.
I CANNOT WAIT.
Why tease us with these when stateside release isn't even mentioned :(
Please remember the Star Ocean fans in the US when you are considering releasing this stateside. Please. We love you long time if you do.
The bilinguals live for our wants and needs. It makes them feel like real people.
I've always had mixed feelings about this title. On one hand, new voice acting, animations, and improved visuals, would be very very nice. On the other hand though, some of the characters have been redesigned in a manner I do not like.
Specifically, the new Rena design is was bothers me. She looks much younger, and she already looked young to begin with. Claude looks about the same in terms of age, but with Rena looking so young, the relationship between those two goes from, being rather cute, to being rather creepy.
To be frank, this is my biggest concern with any remake. A good remake is worth it's weight in gold, but the prospect of radical changes in art style, and characters being re-designed, tends to erk me on a real purist fanboy level.
Though, of course, some redesigning is necessary. This is especially true when you're taking 2D sprite based characters, and trying to bring them into a 3D realm. However, it's a balancing act, because while changes are often necessary, if you take them too far, they start bugging people like me.
Still, lots of nice looking new features in this remake. Even though I have the original, I might have to give the remake a spin, if it ever comes to America.
