Commuters arriving at Shinjuku's Kamiigusa Station in Tokyo see this: A large Gundam statue! Kamiigusa is home of Sunrise, Inc., the anime studio behind Gundam (among many other super famous anime series). Makes sense!

but can it defeat the optimus prime statue in china?
I need one of those in my backyard.
wow. you don't see something like that everyday (unless you live and commute by there of course). I don't quite understand what the Gundam's left side is suppose to be. Is that just there to help hold it up? gun?
pretty cool.
Awesome, I'd like one of those. In Shinjuku station? They sure take prode in their Gundams.
@Chanaluss: Nothing, other than another Gundam, can beat a Gundam. And don't even say "Batman with prep time" because Batman with prep time would just build a Gundam to fight the other one.
Amazing statue by the way.
Wow.... I wonder how much Sunrise, Inc. paid for that. o.o
We need more giant robot statues. Definitely.
Oh man, only in Japan, only in Japan.
GUNDAMU!!
@Chanaluss: No.
That's it Gundam! Reach towards the new tomorrow!
I think the final shooting scene from Encounters in Space would have been a more iconic pose for the statue, but this is cool too. People in Japan really love them some Gundam. (btw, I do to, in case you couldn't tell.)
To anyone that's wondering, that thing cost 20 million yen (about $200,000), with 2 million ($20,000) coming from Government subsidies.
Let's fighting love!
That old guy (by young people standards) in the background looks disgusted =P
@namesRhard: yah, heh thats the first thing i noticed
@Chanaluss:
[i73.photobucket.com]
HEAVEN OR HELL? LET'S ROCK!
@ErskinPig: Daisuke protect my balls!
"Fuckin' nerds." That is what he is thinking.
Thats cool want very much.
Does anyone know what its made of? From the looks of it im guessing they carved it out of 1 giant rock. If that is the case that is some damn fine work.
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2: Probably fibreglass or bronze casting. Doubt its actually carved from rock.
And Japan gets one step closer to creating Gundams to police Japan and eventually take over the world.
@Amuro1X: Winsauce. XD
My money is all on Gundam.
@dmitsuki: Actually, methinks its something like "Taisetsunomono." Or at least thats what it sounds like.
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2: It's bronze.
Wow, it looks like it'd go well with a disco ball...
... just saying.
@Amuro1X: It's awesome.
I wonder if the Bee Gee's "Stayin' Alive" song is playing in the background? Just look at that Travolta pose!
lol, erected.
cactaur: & Amuro1X: Ah thanks
and Amuro1X: thanks for the awesome new PSP wallpaper d^_^d
@ChunkOFunk: no not at all we have stuff like that in america as well. I know in the town where the guy who created Snoopy there are statues of all the penuts character over the place. Its just in Japan one of their favorite cartoon characters is a giant Mech
I aplaude this iniciative.
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2: No problem. I have this crazy huge collection of Gundam images and I instantly remembered this pic.
Now they'll have to build Char's Zaku II or Zeong somewhere.
Needs to be bigger. Much bigger.
I'll take three.
Yes. YES! A THOUSAND TIMES YES!
all this effort to have him waving at the sky?
@namesRhard: He's all "20K of my government yen went to this and I'm living in a 2 tatami flat?"
@Journey: support i assume
Pfft, mine's bigger... And its flaccid! *giggles*
they are now that much closer to erecting fully functional gundams.... I'm going to home depot to get bomb shelter supplies, I suggest you all follow suit.
@clintonskneecap: The town is called Santa Rosa and is in CA. And the statues are quite small and easy to miss really.
FUCK YEAH RX-78!
I would live to high five it everytime I went went to work. Great way to kick off a morning
I would love to be able to see that in person everyday.
You know that its only a matter of time till someone would steal it. Although it would be pretty easy to spot the thief with a gigantic Gundam statue in their front lawn.
when i get to japan (one day damn it....one day) i'm definately going to check this out and/or high five it hehe
this is pure win.
@Pickens:
Voltron would kick a Gundam's ass any day.
zig zeon
I was like wtf, why is there a gundam statue for gran turismo. Then I realized that I just read Gundam Train as Gran Turismo.
I need one of these for my backyard. I can tell all the kids in my neighborhood that if they misbehave, it might come to life and scare them.
@Fonic: actually I was thinking of the ones in St. Paul MN where Charles M. Schultz was born in. But if there are some in Cali well that only proves my point even more.
oh also there was the statue of Rocky in Philly not sure if they still have it though since they got a new stadium.
All we need is a Bumblebee (film version) statue in Rhode Island (Hasbro HQ), and we can call it even.
@clintonskneecap: I thought he was born in Minneapolis? Anyway, yeah, Santa Rosa was where he lived for a long time and where he died so I guess that's why they try to lay claim to him or something. Kind of lame of them really.
@Fonic: yeah I think Miniapolis has them as well He was born in Minneapolis grew up in St. Paul so everyone tries to jump on his money train.
@Chanaluss: Actually they wrestle at every family reunion.
oh and Sieg Zeon!
@Chanaluss: Nobody defeats Prime! Even Gumdam Zero knows when he's beat
This is super cool! I just wish they had that up a few years ago when my wife and I went. I also dig the Keroro Gunso banners on the streetlamps. Gotta love the Japanese!
Now... just make a subtitled version of IdolM@ster for the US and everything will be square.
HIGH FIVE!
You remember this quote:
"The Agriculture Ministry is not in charge of Gundam"
[www.gizmodo.com.au]
Apparently the Ministry of Transport is.
Apparently, this Gundam's theme is either restaurant diner trying to get service, disco, or gay.
"Erected" indeed.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
That is a nice statue but it is no full scale Big O statue
@Pickens:
Depends what you mean by beat, because there's a good few examples of where mobile suits have pushed back and defeated a Gundam. However I'm not sure there's any precedent for a Gundam being destroyed (completely) by anything other than another Gundam.
@dmitsuki:
As pointed out earlier you probably want to mean "Taisetsu no mono, protect my balls" which loosely means: This is important, protect my balls. Rather than "Daisuke protect my balls" which uh loosely translates as: I love protect my balls.
The thing on his left side is the shield.
Wow, I hate Gundam but even I'm impressed by this.
Hell yeah!!! Oh and no single mech can defeat a gundam except another gundam (unless the pilot is a newtype). I would say siege zeon but zeon=scum. Go feddies!!! EFSF will always win. BTW AEUG > titans but it was zeon's fault that there was so much corruption to begin with.
God, to any non gundam fans that whole paragraph must have sounded ps
