Yes, Europe, you pay too much for games. I feel your pain. If your purse-strings are pinched too tightly to allow for full-price gaming, though, you'll be interested to know that SCEE have announced some price-cuts for some of their older PS3 games. No mention of whether or not this constitutes the PS3 debut of the European "Platinum" range, but looking at the list of titles, I'd wager that's a "yes".
Eight titles will have their prices cut to €40 sometime soon (only date we have is "fall"). They are:
- Resistance
- Genji
- F1
- MotorStorm
- Heavenly Sword
- Lair
- Folklore
- Ridge Racer 7

WOAH!! where'd this come from! hmm, well I've always been intrested in folklore and resistance particularly with the sequel looking so awesome
And with each passing generation, the budget line of games increase a bit it´s price... 40€? C´mon ¬¬
Genji? Did that game even sell? Whatever, nice, the more people that buy the better :)
Yeah, 40 quids would have been the price to pay for games on the first PS...
Also, it's nice and all to slice price down on games, but what about mimicking that move on the hardware itself?
When will Australia get price cuts? bluray game cost 100 bucks here.
@Albanian_Killa: Oh it sold unfortunatly, the allure of 'real-time weapon change' was too much for some
@Vany: Agreed, the hardware needs a price cut badly (with current dollar level: $615 in most of Europe, about $740 in Scandinavia...) good to see the older games getting cheaper for once I actually can afford to get the console.
40€? For those?
I paid £18 for Lair, brand new & sealed. That's less than 25€. Paid £25 for Resistance and £30 for Heavenly Sword. Those two I got 6 months ago(!).
These other titles you can grab for 20 or less as well.
Ah, at least the people who buy in stores might benefit from this. GAME still sells those games for more than that I'd imagine.
40€? lol thats what i pay for new released import games with shipping and handle inclusive.
Great move Sony; Go root in to hell.
Good ,it seems a good moment to pick up Folklore and Lair.
@excel_excel:
Many games *don't have real time weapon change. Have you ever played modern Ninja Gaiden or about any other action game? I like to smack this down every time I see it. That feature was worth talking about, since it was a major change in Genji's gameplay. Most games let you pause to switch in that genre, so you can take a break. It's not new or innovative, but fans of the series were interested to know that. Most people play that title for the kamui time anyway, which a lot of game designers like to ape -- good or bad.
@DoggStyle: Where'd you get that?
And yes, the prices for Europeans are terrible. Haven't bought a game in months now. I can't afford to keep my consoles if I am to buy new games.
*sob*
40 pounds is worth how much in canadian/american money? i mean, some people say, oh, thats like a bajillion dollars! but then you guys all make a bajillion dollars an hour too, so it ends up being worth the same.
@Mongoosekun: Well Devil May Cry 3 did, plus Genji was still terrible
I noticed this yesterday.Bought myself heavenly sword and folklore.Absolutely loving Sword,mostly for its cut scenes (andy serkis is hilarious)
in fall? I think you mean autumn, there's no such thing as fall in Europe
@joelface: I'd say that €40 is $61, roughly. And that is for a "budget" game.
But let me break it down for you as well as I can.
We don't make a bajillion dollars an hour. I'd say a full work day is equivalent of a game if you work as a regular Joe. I happen to live in Scandinavia where prices are way, way too high for really any human being. Check this out and see for yourself [en.wikipedia.org]
But for what Sony thinks is a budget game (a bargain?) you would (where I live) be able to buy the following:
19 double cheese/bacon burgers (McDonald's)
30 litres (8 gallons) of gasoline
2,5 newly released DVD's
1,5 copy of 300 on Blu-Ray
62,6 kg (137 pounds) of potatoes
Oooo, my GF wants some Heavenly sword, these prices better carry over to NZ dammit, I'm sick of paying $130 for games (that's US$103 for those too lazy to google)
Here in Sweden we already get great prices for some of the games:
Motorstorm €10
Timeshift €20
Conan €20
Transformers €10
So basically they increase the price on these rubbish games? That's a good idea - if you want even more games settle dust on retail shelves. Most of them are already sold for less than $40 anyway...
At the moment the exchange rate for Pound to Dollar is rounded at 1.98. Take 40 X 1.98 you get 79.2 so this "budget" title thing is a joke at best, as you can see.
Also this is when the exchange rate is slowly coming down it was up to 2.21 which is crazy high.
Hmm, this isn't really big news.. Most of the gamestores or sites in the Netherlands already have the same prices. Actually, most of them are lower..
anyone who even wanted these games has already played them through.
not to mention that two of them are included in the original starter pack that sold over a million and is still in stock in some places (i know a few, but it's not worth the 620+ €)
Most of those games are already 40€ or less.
@sevink:
Erm, the prices are in Euros, not pounds. The exchange rate is 1.57 dollars to the euro, which still leaves these games at $62. But considering us Europeans have been shafted for years, I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.
Either way, converting these prices into dollars is somewhat a pointless exercise at the moment considering how fucked the American economy is at the moment.
OK now bring this to Canada, and fix our Playstation Store prices!
wow after A year these games should be 30$ max
@sevink: That conversion would apply if the price were in GBP. However the price in this article was in Euros, and the exchange rate for those is 1.57 currently.
You also need to remember that these prices include outrageous amounts of sales taxes which are completely outside of Sony's control.
I'm not defending anything. I was brought up in the UK and know exactly what it's like paying over the odds for games and electronics, but this is hardly new. In fact, things have gotten significantly better. They used to just swap out the dollar sign for a pound sign.
@ "anyone who even wanted these games has already played them through."
WRONG!
I only recently picked up a PS3 (£299 40gb) with uncharted and ninja gaiden thrown in from play, I was interested in motorstorm but based on the reviews of it not being that heavy on content felt that that full price was too much. I noticed last week Amazon had cut uk prices on that and resistance to £19.99 at which point I felt it WAS worth the purchase (esp with the updates/addons on PSN).
So it was a very welcome move and I can't wait for more to join it in time as I don't have to own every game in it's week of release as I have too many already on various formats.
And I think Motorstorm is stunning and it's an 'old' game still worth picking up to new PS3 owners of which there will be plenty now BluRay has 'won' the HD war and the console has had and will have more price cuts and great exclusives.
Obv games like GTA4 and GT5 I will be buying asap, the rest can wait for a price cut unless they are really special.
Oh I will also probably pick up folklore as I really enjoyed the demo, but again felt unsure @ £40 but £20 is a far better price to pay (I think £25 should be the price of games anyway but that's another matter). It doesn't bother me that a game has to be a year old to be the price i'd prefer to pay as if anything it IMPROVES due to the accumulated patches and addons over that year. It's certainly good to see Sony doing this and as it's common practice there's no way to put a negative spin on it really - when you consider brand new DS games cost £25-£30 and you get very little content or wow factor £20 ps3 games seem like a bargain by comparison.
Tasty, folklore here I come.
Uh, Australian prices.
The real bummer is, it's not the distributor's fault but the retailers'. It seems to be standard for Australian companies to inflate prices insanely.
I betcha' if you look at Australia, a large percentage of the gamers pirate the video games. Being from Australia myself, I know many that do it. I personally don't, honestly, but look at it: Super high priced games (~90US) and legalised mod chips. Of course, pirating games is still illegal, but still, it's like giving a starving dog some meat...
@joelface: Well, I'm in the EU, and my salary is $400-$500/month. That is also the case in other EU countries. And then we see games cost $100 here.
In Europe, there are huge differences in salaries between countries. Also, in many countries here real-estates cost a lot, and most people just rent their place. So, their salaries go for paying high taxes/fees, rent, much more expensive electricity,... in the end most people have just $100-$300/mo left afaik.
Feels strange for someone like me to own a PS3 and half a dozen games :P
Maybe thanks to this extreme segmentation, piracy here is OK by the law (as long as one doesn't resell/earn money from it).
that's a lot!

Those games do not a price cut. They rot in bargain bins already since shops clearly ordered too many of them. At Gamestop most of them will cost 15€ and they will have 20 and more of them.
Heck, I'm not even going to go into what e.40 will buy in Amsterdam. Let's just call it fun.
On the downside, second hand games and consoles (or even dedicated game shops) are thin on the ground here.
The pre-owned market in Britain and France makes me weep with desire. Went to Paris for a few days, and happened to get a hotel slap bang in the middle of the videogame arrondisment - at least a dozen shops where you could buy every game and console going back to NES (and even 2600, if you're so inclined).
Swings and roundabouts.
Genji: Days of Blade?
finally! I always wanted this epic, but could not afford it.
thank you, jesus christ.
40 euro is still too expensive.
Is this European PS3 games as in...Europe minus the UK?
@lasttimeyouaskedme: My pleasure.
This is good news now that the PS3 is moving units... people can have more pumpkin/stocking stuffer. I do find announcing it this early the paramount of foolishness as the typical gamer who was about to tip over the fence just got 8 more reasons to wait.
@73mike: Dude, Amsterdam is WAY more expensive than that.
@sevink: Once again, it's 40 euros, not pounds you moron.
@Cchrist: Do you know?
@hefferj05: I only live a small busride away but even that busride costs me 10 euro so thats 30 euro left. Now what do you want to do? Want good pot? Then you're in the wrong city. And everything else is just too expensive. Well 30 euro might get you a few propper pints in an english or irish pub but thats not enough to get you intoxicated.
Good luck on more price cuts European Brothers~
It will be interesting to know what games get the price cut come when the release of this years big hitters get released, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze and so on.
Looking on the aforementioned list, i may be interested in checking up Folklore and Ridge Racer 7. Even though neither of these two games are big hitters they seem to be fine games for keeping me going until i get my hands on this years bigger games.
Bizarre move. Sounds like a good way to neuter sales of newer titles if you ask me.
We should stay one week without buying any games.
I bet retailers will shake on terror.
@excel_excel: I imagine the allure of Giant Enemy Crabs was also pretty great.
Their accurate representation in games has been very much neglected, much to my chagrin.
I can easily see these being the platinum titles for the UK.. I'm guessing at £25 for em, like xbox 360 classics were this time last year. It's almost a sony tradition to have the launch titles go platinum first. The next round will prolly be Ratchet and Clank, which is tempting.
@rich8606:
dude your answer to that price is import. much cheaper if you ask me
Cheaper games are always good, w00t for us :)
The best part of this is that it will drive down the price of preowned copies too, since they'll need to be cheaper than new. Here in the UK some of these titles are still fairly expensive used in games stores.
@joelface: about 80USD atm so not really a price cut, I mean we'd pay nothing if we got American prices, also bear in mind that the average British person earns nearly 11USD an hour, not gonna work it out for the under 18's I don't even know how much they get paid in Pound Sterling.
@Gambia: EDIT!
So it still works out at a day at work for most people to afford a game which is still shit, games aren't worth 8 hours of my time just to buy them, granted I have spent more than a few days playing various games and consoles.
Time have changes and games cost a couple of twenty million more dollars to make. So, deal with it and enjoy the savings.
All this "back in my day we used to pay $10 for PS1 games and we did all while walking barefoot in the snow" speeches get tiring. I feel your pain too, but this is how it is.
S
^ I meant "Time has changed..."
;)
@Cchrist: Actually, I live in Leiden and I know exactly what €40 will get me in A'dam. Two-thirds of a night out...
Good move! New PS3 and 360 titles cost about 60-70 Euros here in Austria in the shops.
No complaints here, though i have three of them already, its an attempt to spur sales of dying games a
