Turns out that poor sap who had his Xbox 360 viciously cleaned during a routine repair might now perceive that horrible incident as the best thing that's ever happened to him. In addition to an over the top make-good package from the boys at Bungie, Microsoft has heeded the call for reparations, shipping off a handsomely worthwhile package to Nathan, victim of a wild rag-man.
His prize? A personally signed photo of Bill Gates, who also lent his signature to an Xbox 360 faceplate. Oh, sure, Nate also got a new console and hundreds of dollars in brand spanking new video games, but a signed picture of Bill? I'd be hocking that free copy of Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom for a bulletproof picture frame, right quick.

What's with the caption :)
So where are all those people that demonized Microsoft for not "Caring" like Bungie?
lucky i need to start drawing on my xbox 360 if i had one
@JustOneFix: Last.
Good on Microsoft.
Awwww. Feel the sugary wub.
@JustOneFix: To be banned?
@Jaysunli: They gave the guy a picture of Bill Gates. I think that just added fuel to the fire.
@JustOneFix: Yeah, you seem to be eager to be the first in the banhammer's path, right?
Those drawings remind me of Ctrl+Alt+Del.
I just hate the fact that this guy was bitching because they cleaned his 360 and they reward him for bitching!
This situation reminds me of the times my friends would say ("I wish I had insert disease here) so I could stay home from school!" With all of the cool stuff he's getting, I almost want to have a disservice done to me.
Well, maybe not. I just want all the free stuff.
@JustOneFix: hammer please
I can't think of anything I would want less.
McWhertor, you're on a run today with your picture captions. I really like it. Go ahead, go ahead. :D
I need to quickly find a way to scare Micro$oft before I get my 360 back! Someone want to help?!
Good on Microsoft. Now they just need to issue a stern directive to their repair people to actually read and comprehend letters that are included with the consoles that people have made their own, and their restitution will be complete.
I think some things, such as this, get blown way out of proportion.
now all mircosoft needs to do now is make it so they don't break with the red rings so we don't have to go through sending them back in the first place! eather that or this kid should tottally buy a differnt xbox.
What's Bill gonna do if this box red rings as well? Cut off a finger, sign it and attach it to the new box? :D
(no console bash intended at all)
I am still sticking with my original story, www.scam.com/thisguy
..damn
A signed picture of Bill, wow the joy, he can hang it in his locker now.
I just wish my 360 did not die an hour ago right when I was downloading the Rock Band update with the new store, man that easter holiday will be Rockbandless, if only I could fix it like a regular PC I'd be running outside getting myself a new CPU and fan right now.
Who cares, it was the right thing to do. Now if they can just fix their terrible hardware.
You can't possibly categorized these events as MSFT 'caring'. The compensation is a given, but all he got was a helmet with signatures and goody bag here and there.
I still think the compensation was underwhelming, I was expecting lifetime Live or something of similar value. Guess my 'after-service' mentality from the Far East far exceeds American standards
It still is not enough for all the original J.Hancock that got erased.
Tons of 360's are breaking down left right and centre. Most people are treated with a month long wait and this guy gets everything. Why? PR.
Pretty awesome if you ask me.
Come on! A signed pic of Bill??? He's not even the richest man in the world anymore!!!!
At least give him something thats priceless to repair something priceless. Not a signed pic from the third richest man. How about money from the third richest man. That's priceless.
@Fyren: Yeah, it's more PR than anything else.
@JustOneFix: Hey, guys? It's a bandagger now, right? Didn't I hear something about retiring the banhammer? Well, in that case, make with the stabbin'.
@Shiloa: yeah the next time my xbox dies i should make a huge stink about it being the 5th time and over do it enough that makes mircosoft go DUDE SHUT HIM UP GIVE HIM STUFF! lol
but yes pure PR.
@Jaysunli: This isn't Microsoft "caring", this is Microsoft doing a PR stunt. Nathaniel knows. The point isn't compensation to the one guy, it's the fact that these people are completely incompetent.
"I WAS AN IDIOT AND LOOK WHAT I GOT!!"
I hate stupid people.
@Jaysunli: Of course. You're right. We should be apologizing to Microsoft.
I know how I will.
I'm going to send them an autographed picture of myself.
@Covert_Knight: he didn't do anything what are you on about?
I wish my damned PS3 wasn't black and shiny!
It's like impossible to draw on.
@Gladman: lol my freind imported that white 40gb one or what ever so he could have all white consoles...>.> i called him weird.
A signed photo of Bill Gates? That's like God bowing down and kissing your hand.
@Rockwallaby: he failed to observe the buddhist tenet that life is pain, and physical objects breed attachment. If he were properly aloof from his xbox, then sending it in and getting it back clean would have been a blessing--for he would have been able to contemplate its spotless white shell, and heed the words of the universe. Instead, he has now become burdened with even *more* possessions, ultimately jeopardizing his enlightenment and achievement of Nirvana. Which is just like... tcha... *so* stupid.
I love the alt text on the pic :)
Good and I hope MS support has learned a valuable lesson from this.
Bill Gates has the signature of a second grader.
LOL @ "...routine repair..."
Nice one ;)
@Covert_Knight: Replied to on Kotaku?
@Fyren: I would be happy with all the compensation from everyone. I do understand two years worth of memories with the xbox is hard to get over but microsoft made up for some employees mistake. oh boy, that employee mustve got it, and got it good.
Hmm, something tells me that if my console bit the dust, I wouldn't have the ignorance to say that I was a "proud owner" of it.
@JustOneFix:
dang..I'm relatively new and I know not to do something that dumb..
I really really hate that my 360 with the girls from vivid signatures was wiped.I need some compensation.
Yes,this is PR,but the guy is lucky.Bungie really hooked him up and then MS decided to follow up.
Who on earth would give a damn about a signed photo of bill? Put that thing up on E-bay right now and let's learn exactly how worthless it is.
Pretty harsh caption on the picture there Mr. McWhertor.
That really should be made an official face plate; Microsoft could have easily capitalized on it. *evil plots*
I totally wish I had scribbled all over my Elite with a silver sharpie before sending it in.
@deathbunny: thanks for clearing that up for me.
A signed picture of Bill!
IN HIS OWN ROBOT OIL
If MS did this with every console, I'd be begging to get my Xbox RRoD.
Jokes aside, Great story, thank you MS :)
someone get JustOneFix a signed copy of the Ban Hammer STAT!
@Ruglia: No, Cortana's face is not B^U.
I'd check under the picture - maybe Bill left him hundred-thousand dollar bill. I don't know what denominations American money comes in, but I imagine that'd be one them, nowadays
That's my point entirely. Everyone praised Bungie for giving this kid a bunch of shwag he didn't deserve. It was a P.R. Stunt just as much as microsofts is.
Difference is, however, that Microsoft has some ridiculous Stigma that fan boys love to encourage.
The kid was a moron, he sent in something custom made expecting to get it back the same way? That is just idiotic. Then Bungie rewards his stupidity with a gang of shwag and people praise Bungie... It's outrageous.
Sorry, that last comment was directed @ Roto13
This is amazing... for the gamer in the story, but I have to give a big "what the fuck?" here...
One unbelievable success story and thousands of people still suffering from downright shitty support? Now we're supposed to pat MS on the back for treated the rest of us like dog shit? Fuck that.
Sorry, I RRoD'd recently and I'm finally seeing how fucking INSULTING Microsoft is with this sub-performing product.
@Fyren: Did you not read the article? They gave him a new 360, signed by all the original people who had signed his other one, and then some, with artwork from the same guy who did the artwork before. Plus a bunch of games. Plus he got all that other stuff from Bungie.
He ended up better than before. How is that not compensation?
LMAO Microsoft. That is so not adequate. Just because Bungie already did your job for you doesn't warrant a half-assed attempt at reparations.
so if i draw a doodle on a dead xbox and send it in then make a big deal, they'll give me free stuff? im game!
@JustOneFix: nice knowin' ya.
and holy crap. Thats an unbelievably great compensation.
Hopefully this one doesn't die and he sends it in as well. Did Bill Gates sign, "Don't erase this time on it or you're fired."?
It is a PR stunt but a very nice one at that. This guy is better off than before and he has a lot of dedication for this product and the people behind it.
I can haz autograph?
Even though I dislike Xbox and think this is mostly a publicity stunt, that was extremely hardcore awesome.
