In the upcoming PS# shoot-fest you will only be able to play as a member of a special forces unit if you are in a clan, solo player will be relegated to playing as either a commando or mercenary. Clan folks get their choice of these special forces units, as well as all of their uniforms, gear and weapons:
* Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEALs, United States)
* Special Air Service (SAS, United Kingdom)
* Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK, Germany)
* Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (UOE, Spain)
* 1er Régiment de Parachutistes d'Infanterie de Marine (1er RPIMa, France)
Interesting way to try and push gamers to team up more permanently.

1er Régiment de Parachutistes d'Infanterie de Marine FTW!
Thank you for making my decision to stick with COD 4 even easier, Sony.
Seriously, what a crock of shit that is for adults like me that play casually and have no desire to be relegated to playing with a clan.
I want a PS#.
*gets in line*
I want this game SO bad.
I can't hold still.
Only have an XBOX #^) unfortunately.
That's cool as shit if you play with the same people, but most of us don't have that luxury and will end up getting stuck with the dregs.
@jslay012: Yeah, keep your pants on there. They're not really clans so much as they are classes.
They're only calling them "clans" to appeal to the hardcore SOCOM players.
For me, it's all about SAS and SEALs. Man, I loved the SAS in SOCOM II. I can't wait until this game comes out!
*yawn* am i awake yet?
Nothing like encouraging cliques, bowling teams and isolationism. "If you don't belong then you must be an individual" :p
No ownder no one is my friend...(snarf)
This is an interesting move, but probably a poor decision. In understand the desire to reward team play but locking solo players out of a good portion of the game isn't the way to go.
I have never been a fan of clans, mostly because I never really know if they're any good or if the people are fun, which to me is more important than being dominant.
But this game, which I am almost surely purchasing, seems to have a good way to make me choose and actually try to play with the same team over and over.
Usually, I pick and choose friends but it can be hard to get everybody together. Props to Sony for at least trying something different and hopefully adding to the experience.
That's cool. I'm definitely joining up with the UK SAS or French G...wait. "1er Régiment de Parachutistes d'Infanterie de Marine"? What the shit? GIGN ANYONE?
@ShirtGuyDom: Ah, that may be better then. As long as I am not forced to play with a set group of people to have access to better weapons & equipment....
What?? No Green Berets/Rangers??
I don't care about playing as a sailor,but it's still a neat idea.I've never really played any socom.Is there a cover system or just run and shoot 3rd person?
is this an fps?
@jslay012: Not necessarily better (or worse, for that matter), just different. I see these "clans" more like classes in WoW or Diablo (for instance) where you have exclusive access to some equipment while no access to others.
I doubt the assault rifle the SAS use in the game won't be better or worse than the assault rifle the SEALs use.
And I highly doubt you're going to get screwed if you decide to play without a "clan."
I mean I love fps and some of the past fps clans I've been in. Problem is... ALL BUT TWO OF THEM, kicked me out because they can't understand that I had to work, dedicate time to family, girlfriend and friends.
I'd like to join a clan called "Laid Back SAS"...
@Agies:
I agree. Locking solo players out of a good portion of the content is a bad thing to do. People will join the first random clan they find just so they can experience the content. Also, I expect there to be a lot of clan hopping since no one will want to be solo at any point in the game.
I'd hate to pine after Socom 2, but the series really hasn't ever lived up to it.
Confrontation still looks decent from what they've shown, so hopefully we'll get a decent game in the end.
Nice idea for those who like it, but I play on my terms so screw this community crap.
I hope you can choose a female character like in vegas
I don't play SOCOM myself, but I think that sony's strategy is really cool. Maybe it will turn off some gamers, but at least it's being proactive. I'm really happy with the growing focus on co-op and multiplayer gaming...so long as it doesn't lead to the detriment of single-player experiences overall.
@comedy: You'd best be trolling. Wait. No you shouldn't be.
@Solidsky: Hey, you make it, I'll join with you.
Too many gamers on PSN just take Call of Duty far too seriously. I'd be down for making a casual gaming crew. I've got a girlfriend and a full time job, so god knows I can't be online every day until I crash.
And since it's be in a clan, I'm sure these requirements can be filled if you make your own clan, for those upset.
For hardcore SOCOM fans, this is pretty awesome. Fresh news ideas like this is what SOCOM needs. Now release this game already!
this feature seems kinda cool but then again if u only get to have those guns for each military then i can see people whoring out just 1 division. for me SEALs with the Boonie hat ftw...
SAS all the way baby.
But will there be voice chat?
what a great idea. I'm going with SAS...
Damn EGM, always hording the screenshots... =) die paper media, die!
Bring on the strong Essex accents, I'm getting in with the SAS.
@Tyber_Zann:
+1
Woot! Socom 1 was the reason I bought a PS2 network adaptor, can't wait for a new one.
Just make a 1 man clan <333
that picture looks fucking amazing. this game should turn out fairly well, i don't really care about what skin I am because I will probably join a clan anyways.
@hamandcheeseUK: lol same here. this is the 1 game Ive been waiting for besides gtaIV. CoD can lick socom's balls.
Ahh the SAS the regiment even the USA turns to when they absolutely have to get a mission done.
PSPOUND
Sounds catchy, but it might be taken to mean a heavier version of the PSP.
@TACOMAN2442: Did the GameFAQs forums close this morning or something?
Could be fun... Just release it already
I'm gonna get this game one way or another, but I hope it comes with a PS brand blu-tooth headset.
@dsmx:
The SAS training style is used for sure..
@Setzer IIDX: if you think that COD4 players are "serious", then you obviously have not played much SOCOM before...
SOCOM is infinitely more enjoyable in a clan...especially when you can vote asshats out of your rooms. Hopefully that function stays with this version.
someone's gonna claim that shot was in-game. That person will have a bag full of coins with Ken Kutaragi's head on it. He will be stabbed by woman in front of the council, and we will tell his treachery by the blood money which falls to the floor.
@jslay012: Hmm... Alright? You could probably just find a "casual clan" on gamefaqs message boards for the game. One that will allow you to be a part of their team but it's casual enough that you can just play whenever you and they are online at the same time, no schedules, no requirements, just play when you can. It's no big deal. I'm sure it's plenty fun to play the game without being one of those specialists, too. Remember, if you're playing as the regular character, then so will everyone you're playing against, because you won't be in a clan match, so nobody could use the specials.
I'm looking forward to this game, surely.
@Knight-Zero: Doesn't it? I thought read somewhere that it will come with a PS brand blue-tooth headset.
Will not compete with COD4 online. wish so. but won't. Period. Hell Halo is in second place. Wouldn't be surprised if micorsoft gets their hands on SOCOM. Having "exclussives" these days is like telling your high school girlfriend you love her. just doesn't mean as much.
I'd rather play a Mercenary.. c'mon, they're the coolest.
@thechain212: So obviously you've played SOCOM Confrontation before. Or you're talking out of your ass. I opt for the latter with your MS buying SOCOM fantasy. Will happen when Sony buys Halo.

Yea do some research before you post man. SOCOM is owned by Sony so untill pigs fly SOCOM will never be on Xbox. So next time ya post do some research n00b.
How's that going to work on such a disjointed online service.
@thechain212:
That has about as much chance as the next Major Nelson PSN podcast.
@baked ham: What's wrong with the one that comes with Warhawk?
@Candlejack: Nothing. That's the one I use. But that guy said he wanted Socom to come with a Playstation branded headset, and I was informing him that I thought it did (and I looked it up to confirm, and it does indeed, according to Wikipedia anyway).
