Hey, new GTAIV screens. If idyllic moments of calm and tranquility are your thing, this isn't your thing. But if your thing's angry faces, men holding guns and explosions, wll, today is your lucky day, my friend.

Color me excited. *Jazz hands~!*
I give thumbs up to Agent 47 replica SS.
I've never liked the GTA games *that* much. Sure, they're fun for a while, but I don't think I've played through a whole game, and I own the trilogy box...
And all theses screens don't look that good, really. Do they?
I hope they nail the game play, so I may give it a chance.
@Aglet: I wasn't a fan of GTA until San Andreas, but that has to be (as far as replay value goes) one of my favorite games a few years back. So, I'm looking foward to that.
Nice smoke effects!
GTA isn't about graphics. Although, these look much more awesome than their ps2 brothers. Gameplay is always amazing.
I've sandboxed away only in GTA. Now with multiplay and actual people playing in the city with you, not the craptacular PC mod, the entertainment value just increased 10 fold.
Psst: Luke, you forgot an "e" in well...
@Aglet: Well technically they kind of look like balls, but that's Rockstar's way. In terms of narrative the shots definitely have my attention.
I don't have a huge amount invested in this game, but I will be happy if it turns out well. I'd say I'm about ready to play another GTA.
I was never a fan of GTA once it went 3D, but I must say this newest incarnation has my attention. Well, at least it did when they announced a plethora of multiplayer modes/options.
@mackincheese: it was the best sure. But I was never convinced of their awesome story-telling like many reviewers seemed to be. Although I remember a few missions as being pure fun.
@frostcircus: ball-graphics noted. The thing that still keeps me interested is the increased power of the consoles which could result in some interesting AI. I really like Assassin's Creed's world which felt really alive. One can only hope that Rockstar nears that level of fantastic-ness.
As if I needed any more reason to leap on this... :D
Guns, explosions, and chases! Oh my!
will this game run in 1080P?
PLEASE tell me it will.
I can once again live out my cinema fantasies in a next gen balls to the wall re-imagining of Liberty City. I'm thinking a perfect blend of Eastern Promises meets the Goodfellas with equal sprinkles of Heat & Reservoir Dogs.
* Blasphemy I forgot to mention a good dose of Ronin.
That guy at the ATM is about to get fucking rocked. That'd be sweet if you could rob those for cash in the game.
Looking forward for this game. The big choice though is PS3 or X360? I really don't care too much for DLC on X360 (don't want to deal with "points"). Wonder if PS3 will have anything "unique" that differentiates itself?
The only thing I'm not liking is the facial shots. Everything else looks great. The facial shots...Oblivion says hi.
Niko's looking more like that guy who shot himself in slo-mo in CoD4 with that tracksuit on.
The site also got updated. They have WKTT (talk radio) and the disco K109 up in the music section.
@Aglet: GTA has never really been about the graphics. It's so the lag doesn't kill you when 20 cars explode at once.
@SumDum_Guy: Well, the PS3 version has the ability to never get that DLC. Otherwise, no extras. If you have the choice, it seems silly to permanently lock yourself out of the ability to get the expansion.
I haven't been this excited about a game in a long time...
And given the scope of the game the graphics are phenomenal! 16 players online!!!
I wonder if there will ever be a game that will unite gamers in a unanimous vote of approval.. it seems there will always be someone that will call a game "ass"..
Actually there are a few exceptions... Super Mario Bros would be one I guess?
@Astrofox: Super Mario Bros was ass.
Mmm, ruination.
@Frank: Thats it... that was our last hope :(
I've been on board with the GTAs since Vice City. I never tried GTA3 until after I'd played through San Andreas, so it never held that special place for me like a lot of others... It seems like each time they blow the previous one out of the water on some level. In VC it was the story, the period theme, music and voiceover stars! In SA it was the ambitious size and the variety of vehicles and missions, and capturing that John Singleton/Hughes Bros vision of inner LA. This time it looks like interaction, gameplay and sheer environmental realism... it just looks damn amazing. I'm going to disappear for awhile when this hits the streets...!
This maybe my first GTA game.I've played them some on my friends PS2,but I've never owned one.I played the original top down version .
I like looking at GTA "screens". Unfortunately, historically these end up being "the game sorta looks like this, but not as good".
Nice looking "screens" anyway.
I'm old! I've been playing GTA since numero uno. And eveytime i try to not get too exited and everytime i fail. Can i has video futuge?
I think all the people complaining about the graphics should try firing up San Andreas on an HDTV. When you see how awful it looks blown up to what is fast becoming today's standard (on my 50 inch plasma TV San Andreas has been known to make eyes bleed), you will find yourself greatly looking forward to any HD GTA endeavor.
Yep its almost about that time.
Please sir, I would like some more.
@Thimble:
Ah who cares, GTA's always been about the gameplay.
Cant wait...im so hyped...
I just hope the game isn't as grainy as the screenshot...because its awfully ugly
ware iz de hoes!?1111
@Thimble: Historically since when? Usually, when they release screens this close to the release date, it's usually what you get. In fact, it'll probably look better when you're actually playing it.
Anyway, I'll echo others' sentiments: Who cares? It may not be the prettiest game, but it's certainly not the ugliest. It definitely has a great style and tone, and for being so huge, it does amazing things with the graphics. Can't wait for this game.
I think these shots look great, considering the scope of the world and the openendedness of it all. If the game really is as immersive as the previews have made it out to be then these graphics are more than enough to satisfy me.
ya know these screens are all good and all. But CGI graphics don't impress me much. why is it they rarely show gameplay screens? unless..... these ARE gameplay screens (highly doubt it) all GTA games have looked fairly good, but lets ace it. The only time you will see these are during the 20 second cutscenes. I wanna see pics of the cars, the scenery, the people and the lighting when I am actually running around the city.
I think i will spend these 38 days waiting for the game to do 38 different things.
Day 1, seen as this is my first day i will chill out and do nothing possibly drink some alcohol.....hmm this is a good idea. i may see a pattern emerging for the last 37days
This game really is looking better and better.
@xBETAx: im pretty sure GTA uses the in-game engine for the cut scenes(just like the last three, IIRC)
oh, and [kotaku.com] is my new background
@xBETAx: These are NOT cgi graphics. If they were the animators should be fired as they don't even look nearly as good as Drakes Fortune's actual gameplay.
Cutscenes in this game are done with the ingame graphics engine. Cuts scenes may be slighlty enhanced with some filters but for the most part almost exactly like the normal game.
The reason why most find these shots suspicious is because of the odd camera angles "Proof they are not ingame because why would the camera be in front of you" is what is said. Reality is that the game has a built in "cinematic view" button. Push it and the camera turns to a zoomed in shot that is angled to capture the action better (it also slows down time as well, like bullet time).
I personally think it looks great for a sand box world. Maybe not top of the line next gen but for this kind of game, it is incredible.
This game looks incredible. Why are so many people saying it doesn't look good? Don't forget this is a game with a huge city on it, be thankful we've got this level of detail.
I think the graphics are fine, but like what has been said before, its not all about the graphics.. i'm happy as long as the story is good and the gameplay is as fun as in the past games. Yeah GTA games the graphics weren't the best, but they sure wasn't the worst and it was all about the open end of it all, being able to go anywhere and do anything. I can't wait for this game.
It's funny how many posts there are that start with "I was never really into GTA", yet somehow it's one of the most popular franchises ever conceived.
Show some damn gameplay screenshots already. I want to see the HUD. Am I the only one who wants to see some gameplay shots? Seriously.
is looking so good, I cant wait.
Show me some god damn gameplay pics already!
I want the 3rd person perspective with HUD and everything!
If u cant do that R*, then atleasts provide me some gameplay videos..
@xBETAx: Yeah, where have you been? GTA has always done in-game engine cut scenes since it went 3D. Plus, are you serious? Like Rockstar would release so many screens that weren't in-game. Just because it doesn't show a HUD it doesn't mean it's not in-game.
Plus, these screens don't exactly look like the best graphics on the 360/PS3 it's not like you can say 'Omg!!! These graphics are too good to be real!!!11!!'.
Seriously, reality check. The release is just over a month away and, as far as I'm concerned, ever since the first trailer it's been in-game engine. There's absolutely no reason to suggest otherwise apart from the lack of a HUD. Rockstar likes to promote stuff the cinematic way. A HUD in screenshots and trailers would just ruin the whole atmopshere of them.
Sweet bejeebus. I think I'm going to have to take a sabbatical next year to have the time to play this game.
This game is looking better every day.
It would be much nicer if they can provide some actual in-game shots.
@Nosignalinput: Umm you know that the game has actually been reading since November but ummm errr "something" errr, held them up. These are in engine and most if not all screens have been coming from the 360 build since the get go.
Too much pessimism about this game coming from the people on this article. Too much "it doesn't look pretty enough!" and "I wish I had three balls to be able to comment on this game I haven't played yet!". Frankly, the screens are awesome. Oh, and for all those nit-picky naysayers, R* has always given you 'in-game screenshots'. The statement itself is redundant knowing that all the cutscenes in the Grand Theft Auto series, not to mention this one, which is almost guaranteed to not be any different, because they all rendered in game. So the lack of the precious HUD shouldn't bother you that bad. You won't see actual "gameplay" shots until you play it, like they want you to.
Now, having said that, I'm sure these, as most games go, are touched up a bit, but it's a lot different to grab screenshots from a game in motion. They usually have some odd effect from the motion on screen that doesn't translate well into still frame. That is usually blurred so that we all get our giddy half inside a-kickin' for the game, regardless of some choppy edges you won't even notice 99% of the time anyways, as you will be laughing aloud with your friends as you run down an old lady with the new Euphoria engine.
"DUDE SHE GRABBED THE HOOD AND SCREAMED UNTIL I HIT THAT TRUCK!!!"
All I'm saying is that we should be more excited, less morose about the coming of this game. Should be fun for all. All of us over 17 of course...
I CAN HAZ HUD NXT PLS?
How about that blood decal on shot 19, eh? Can you get shot and bleed on your clothes this time around? Will there be entrance/exit wounds on enemies?
That would be a cool twist to the series, I have to admit.
i hate everyone for not answering my question!
@xBETAx: How are you gonna say this doesn't look in game. and Rockstar has always used the game engine and graphics for cut scene which means when you play the game always looks the same in or out of a cut scene.
