When EA released a new software update for the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box last night, it was annoyingly silent on what exactly had changed. Finally, the gang at has given up the info goods. But don't expect too much in the way of excitement, because as you know, new maps like Badlands and Well (CTF) for Team Fortress 2 weren't stashed within. It's mostly bug fixing, memory leak plugging and server connection smoothing—and almost all TF2 related. The full list of changes is after this.
Oh, and hold tight Europe. Your update is coming soon-ish.
* Fixed a graphical issue whereby a player would have the explosion effect left on the end of their Rocket Launcher when attempting to Rocket Jump.
* Fixed a memory leak to improve single player stability.
* Fixed an issue whereby the players name would not appear on the Stats comparison screen.
* We have fixed an issue that would cause the vote tallies to disappear when you viewed the scoreboard between rounds.
* Fixed an online server issue.
* Fixed an issue that caused a crash when a player that wasn't in Division 1 entered 'Your Leaderboards.
* Fixed an issue with players not always being added to the 'Players Met' menu on the XMB.
* Fixed a bug where a player viewing a friend without an EA account would have an empty entry in the friend's Leaderboard.
* Fixed an issue where it was not possible to connect to the EA servers if you had more than 30 friends.

Comments
cause this is really what the fans wanted out of a patch
"Fixed an issue where it was not possible to connect to the EA servers if you had more than 30 friends"
Probably one of the weirder glitches I've ever heard of, what on earth, in terms on coding, could cause that to happen?
Cool. The PS3 version needed an update. Hope it hits Europe soon.
So no fix on any of the issues with the other games? Kinda lame, but cool for TF i suppose. Still waiting for the other patch
Stability translates to framerate improvement? there were moments where the game was nearly unplayable
By the way, what if I played the game on a US PSN account? Would that let me download the patch? I never tried it with other games because they seemed to get patched simultaneously.
They made a mistake. That's not an Orange Box patch fix. That's a TF2 patch fix.
Name update required.
Waiting for a framerate patch or new maps, but at least TF2 is better!
* Fixed a memory leak to improve single player stability.
So does this mean the framerate issue has been fixed? That's kind of what I'm waiting for to buy the game. Then again, at this point I guess I might as well wait for a price drop as well.
wtf? no stability improvement on Episode 2?
I'm happy for PS3 users. Still no TF2 360 patch. Still barely playable (horrible lag, lost connections), half a year after release. Ridiculous.
@Xiedo: Just imagine how bad the ps3 servers are, it's run by EA not good at all.
Ironically, I had a crash in Ep. 1 right after installing the update. I wonder if it's an unfixed bug or if it came with it. What a mess...
@c-lin' Fanboy: you should just get it man, i finished ep2 recently and all i can say is the issues are blown WAY out of proportion.
Least they fixed a lot of the TF2 issues. Though I'd really like to see the framerate issues fixed in Portal and Half-Life.
@B33: I never ran into any frame rate issues in Portal, just the long load death time. But in Half-Life i have not too terrible, but i pushed passed it and it stabilized.
@c-lin' Fanboy: Like nolifedopestar said, if you don't have a 360, you should still get it for PS3. I bought mine and could have returned it several times, but I'll still keep it. If they patch the bugs successfully it'll be even better but it's still a very good game. The framerate in TF2 can be very annoying though.
Put patch here!
How the hell do you rocket jump with dual analog anyway? Actually, TF2 as a whole seems like it would be pretty unfriendly to consoles.
This is one of the few games I opted to buy for the 360. Hopefully next time Valve will take on the programming duties for the PS3 version. Especially since Sony's sales have been pretty damn good as of last Fall.
I know this will induce a few eye rolls, but I can't believe so many people on a supposedly hardcore gaming site would opt to play this on a console(?). Don't you people have PCs?!
@ErskinPig:
Owning a PC and owning a gaming capable PC are two very different things.
@ErskinPig: Kinda thinking the same thing. Although, I can understand the 360 owning Halo crowd wanting something different and picking this up. I guess if that's all you've got it's better than nothing, but it sure as hell isn't the true experience.
@ErskinPig: play half life on the PC? what is this, 1999?
oops :)
Was gonna say that must be a seriously bad pc when i have a 7 or 8 year old kt 266 with a amd 2000xp cpu, 512mb ram and a radeon 9800pro that plays oblivion and doom quite nicely at low res,1024x768.
I dont consider it a gaming pc but it plays them games just fine.
Of course i never tried any of the half life games so i could be wrong but as the half life engine was quite easy on a pc spec wise i assume the will run ok.I seem to remember doom 3 being harder to run than half life 2.
@UFO: hmmm i don't think so man, i remember having to upgrade to run HL2 smoothly, while i could run doom 3 easily.
@NutManIV: Indeed, but it's not like you need a cutting edge system to run this. Anything up to 4-5 years old would do. Basically, if your PC could run HL2, it'll run this nicely.
@huffdaddy: Yeah, it's better than nothing. But still, console = compromise.
@nolifedopestar (PSN: noliferuin): I'm going to interpret that as a joke, in which case heh. The alternative of course is that you were being serious, in which case oh dear.
@ErskinPig: Console = comprimise? And the ability (in splitscreen games) to play with non-gamer, or console only friends. That's a benefit in itself.
@bobtheduck: and to show off your mods on UT3, even if you can't (yet) play them with friends offline.
@ErskinPig: i meant it as a joke, however, i definitely prefer being able to play on consoles (having played HL2 on PC and PS3). sitting on the sofa taking turns with a friend beats sitting alone at a PC.
@bobtheduck: In the case of this game and more generally the FPS genre at least (although it applies to other things too), yes, consoles absolutely = compromise.
@nolifedopestar (PSN: noliferuin): Yeah, I can respect that point of view, but playing FPS games with a controller, no thanks. That, and the superior online stuff for TF2 makes opting for the PC version a no brainer imo.
Additionally, (something people often seem to overlook with PCs) you can get the whole sitting-on-a-sofa-playing-on-a-tv experience with a PC. You just need a TV out cable, a bluetooth mouse & keyboard and a board to lay across you lap. I frequently do this. It's a bit more hassle to set up, but you only need to do it once.
blown out of proportion my ass. methinks the people who are saying it "isn't so bad" don't die too often. the death load times in HL2:Ep1 are ABSURD. the more you suck, the worse the game experience gets. also, the framerate in the elevator in the first chapter of episode 1 was to a crawl. I didn't know if I was playing HL2 or Gradius 3. an embarrassing effort that should have never been let out the door. "yes, i missed the era of PS1 load times."
anything that makes a game PLAY better... is a GREAT reason for a patch.
although shame on ANY company that puts out a game that doesn't play well in the first place.
but its sure as hell better than not getting a patch at all!!
@nolifedopestar (PSN: noliferuin): At this point, it's more that I'm holding off because I think it's late enough in the game's lifecycle to just wait until it drops in price. Also, COD is still keeping me busy with its online, Warhawk fills in the gaps, I have games that I haven't even played once yet, and I already have MGS preordered.
nolifedopestar (PSN: noliferuin):..ok so you got me thinking and i was sure my memory served me right so i ripped half life 2 episode one over to the old amd 2000, 9800pro machine.
Verdict, yeah it runs great just as i thought, better than doom 3 ever did.
1024x768, model detail medium, simple relfections, no AA, HDR full, textures medium, shadows high, trilinear filtering and shader high.
These were the recommended settings chosen by the game.
Not bad for such an old pc with only 512 mb of memory.
Remember this is a 7 year old pc with a 9800pro stuck in at a later date.
Awesome, so multiplayer gets the love and single player gets...what exactly? "improved stability?" Does that mean the load times aren't bordering on 'Absurd' anymore?
I own the Orange Box on the 360, so this really doesn't affect me, but it is very disheartening to see multiplayer being to push out concerns over single player more and more. :(
Out of all the problems with The Orange Box, this is what they fix?
I agree with UFO, I find it slightly humourous that the the port is so horrible that the PS3 struggles to run it when 6/7 year old midline PCs can run it just fine.
Not insulting the computer power of the PS3, just the quality of the port.
I forgot to add that I suppose that is the differnce between something programmed by valve and something done by EA.
PC version (which does not involve EA at all) is one of the games by which I judge how well code is optimized.
PS3 version...not so much
Too little too late.
The damage you've done to your reputation (in my eyes) is unfixable Valve.
I will never, ever be buying one of our shoddy, unreliable products again - because I know that you won't give a damn about releasing a product that works properly and/or fixing the issue in a timely fashion.
Oops - I meant *your* shoddy, unreliable products.
@PooPooKaKaBumBum:
Yes, because Valve made the Orange Box for the PS3. *rolls eyes*
Take a glance at the PC versions of any of their games and see how much effort Valve actually do put into giving a near perfect experience.
@PooPooKaKaBumBum:
Surprise surprise, the PS3 version was ported by EA.
No dolby digital 5.1? Now that sucks!
@ChunkOFunk: Coding whilst drunk. It's never a good idea. It's how they made Army Men: Sarge's Heroes
I'm glad that both IW and Valve have addressed that "Players Met" bug. It was getting annoying to always have to ask people what exactly the characters in their PSN id's were (sometimes text is small, yknow?) and then have to keep a pen and paper handy (I know, sounds lazy, but it seems like it should have worked from day one...).
RUUUUMMBLEEEEE! I just don't understand why nobody is adding it.
@RaepGoblin: Not many PS3 users have rumble yet. Though there will be a larger install base once the controller is released and bundled.
So Now its worth buying?
Did they fix all the slow downs & long load times?!
