The battle for weekly first place hardware showings in Japan went back to Sony this week, with the PSP outselling the Wii one more time. With just a few thousand sales setting them apart, however, the contest is almost a dead heat. DS Fever seems to have cooled a bit over the past few weeks, with the handheld resting quietly in third, presumably waiting to strike back before the end of the year. Quiet times on the hardware front make us look forward to new marquee releases. Until then...
- PSP - 57,651
- Wii - 55,845
- Nintendo DS - 53,266
- PlayStation 3 - 14,934
- PlayStation 2 - 9,930
- Xbox 360 - 1,744

OMG what´s the good stuff that I´m missing on psp?
Are they all down?
PSP IS THE BEST SYSTEM EVER.
God. What are all these people playing on their Wiis? It's almost insane. I mean, except Brawl.
@Wyld:
color.
Jeanne D'Arc, MGS: PO, GoW: Chains of Olympus, Wipeout Pure/Pulse, Patapon, FFT: War of the Lion, Syphon Filter series, should I go on?
I'm telling you... Japanese people can't possibly live in their own homes! The only explanation I have for the Wii is that it's just small enough that they'll lug it around. I'm no analyst so I have to resort to strange reasons as to why Japan loves portables so much.
high def gaming platforms seem to be tanking...
Yeah PSP!!!!!
i give xbox 3 to 4 months in japan, any takers?
@okenny :): Please don't infer that analysts have any sort of credibility.
Say WHAT
@okenny :): They play practically all their games while on the go. On the train, it really seems as though everyone either has a DS or a PSP.
Pretty crazy when the numbers are low. DS two week win streak. CONgrats.
wow PSP - well done! and with only two titles in the software top 30 it's actually a little kooky for it to be #1.
Go PSP, GO! In fact, go handhelds, GO!
Im curious to see if the next MHP2G will effect the PSP sales any.
@Xcite79: Somehow I doubt Japanese audiences are gobbling up God of War, Syphon Filter, and Wipeout.
So confused. This does not compute.
PSP has so many pwnsome games :P not to mention haxoring it to play tons of old shit (or PS1 games on it and such)
PSP still selling well off of the strength of a new color. DS is somewhat saturated, but not nearly enough to make a major splash once DQIX is released. PS3 numbers are deplorable. No need to mention Microsoft. Smash should outsell Yakuza next week. Smash is no match for uber-casual games like Wii Fit.
@Stormrider:
That is true but to see there is no worthy games to purchase a PSP game is crazy. Patapon and Crisis Core are good enough reasons.
Good job PSP. Seems that the only consoles that didn't do so hot is the PS2 and 360. Normal week, kinda.
@Witzbold: I'd say there'll be a lot of dinosaur steaks being cooked in the coming months, Witz.
PSP still selling strong due to the new color. DS sales will skyrocket later this year when DQIX is released. PS3 sales are disappointing. Smash should outsell Yakuza next week. Smash is no match for uber-casual games like Wii Fit.
All the people that want and have a DS have now saved up enough money to get a PSP too.
Is the core out in Japan now? I could have swore I heard some analyst saying the 360's sales will increase significantly after it's released there. This is among the lowest numbers I've seen for the 360 in Japan.
And by "core" I mean "arcade"
@Witzbold:
I almost picked up a PSP just for that. Decided to wait for the next inevitible release on a next-gen platform (or maybe the Wii release) instead.
@Neer'mo: I am VERY worried about the Wii version.
I have a feeling any good memories of the series will be the ones had before the Wii version. :x
know what would make PSP better? GTA San Andreas stories. to bad it won't be made :(
@Witzbold: I agree with you there. Something smells of gimmick...are they using the wiimote for all the combat actions?
@Witzbold: I think MHP2G will affect the PSP in a big way. probably double or more what it sold this week.
@Witzbold: I agree about the Wii version. the ps3 version seemed more popular at least on Famitsu. not that a game can be judged by its popularity.
Poor Xbox 360 wedge...it must be feeling just a tad claustrophobic there :(
Nice to see PSP on top of the Premiersh... I mean on top of the video game charts. Please, 360. Don't be relegated :(
@Aethyr: Brawl. Add me.: The boa constrictor of counterpart console sales are tightening around it...soon, red lights will flash...then they'll stop...and the jungle will be silent once more.
ps3 is really tanking
"DS Fever seems to have cooled a bit over the past few weeks, with the handheld resting quietly in third, presumably waiting to strike back before the end of the year."
Dragon Quest IX?
@subnet6:
No it isn't.
Ouch. Those 360 numbers are brutal. I think that's the worse it's been in the past few months. And the PsP is overshooting everybody's expectations. Don't get me wrong, I love mine, but these numbers are amazing.
@ErskinPig: He implies, you infer.
@Stormrider: they're probably eating up the RPGs tbh
Why is the PS3 doing so bad, Yakuza 3 is very high on the software charts still! Alternatively are people realizing all the old games they missed on the PSP, because they aren't buying any new ones.
Look, closer, closer, again, yeah you see a green task
;)
Xbox 360 is for dirty white devils.
=)
Ha got to love the Japanese love to export but will never import. Microsoft should have gave up the ghost along time ago over there. It's a perception they will never beat.
PIty that whenever the PSP is on top it only leads by a really low margin
Im betting the DS will be in the 50k lead again when DQ9 is out
but yeah, Go handhelds! since I have them =D
@Superstar90 lieks mudkipz: Because newer PS3s dont have BC compounded with the fact that the PS3 still doesnt have exactly an established library yet to justify folks dropping down the mad $$$ for it.
I never see these but its pretty fascinating to see this. If you look on a macro level in terms of market share Nintendo and Sony are fairly even. Sony almost seems to prevent growth with hanging onto the PS2 so long. Potential sales are lost on an older system like that. And its nearly equal to the PS3 sales. Why is the PSP overperforming so much? Are the capabiltiies beyond a platform or are the games making it do so well? It seems to be Sony's ace in the videogame war.
What people don't realize is that every person in Japan already has a DS (and Wii). If you can find a total sales chart you will be able to see that. Why buy a DS when you already got one?
@Witzbold: Why exactly do you say that? Have they even shown anything about it?
@todde7:
Hyperbole, if you look at the sales charts you'll see that only a third of Japan has a DS, not everyone. Of course, a third is still a ridiculously high percentage, but still...
I don't know why they compare handhelds with counsels. It seems to me that they are two different things. The first next gen system that I bought was a Wii, but the first handheld that I plan to get is the PSP. That doesn't mean that I favor Nintendo over Play Station, and want them to win the counsel wars. They both just excel in different areas. One comparison that comes to mind is the sale of schooners and kayaks. No one compares them, they each have their own niche, just as handhelds and counsels have their own markets.
@gulyman: The thing is, we're not comparing PS3's to the original Gameboy. Handhelds nowadays are advanced enough that you can enjoy a game on a PSP/DS that has tons of gameplay, and might even provide more hours of entertainment than some console titles. If we were still dealing with early generations of handhelds, then sure, but nowadays handhelds have shown they're more than capable of having good games, and could definitely compete for some game time against some console titles. (Especially in Japan, where handhelds seem to have become the favored sons of the gaming scene.)
@Ampillion, now with the hair stylings of TVs Frank: Trust me with the work ethics / creativity / progr
