PlayStation 3 owners who attempt to play their copies of The Orange Box tonight will be greeted with a required update, bringing the EA published collection to version 1.10. The 128 MB download unfortunately doesn't come with a changelog, nor can we find a shred of information on what's changed on the internet. Digging through Valve's Steam forums, EA's support site and game forums, and the official PlayStation web site have revealed nothing about the download. We're pestering EA to found out what's up.
During my initial play time with the new version, testing out Team Fortress 2, Portal and Half-Life 2: Episode Two, nothing was immediately noticeable, although connecting to a TF2 game did seem to be rather speedy.

hmm well if they fixed the hickups then all should be clear am i right fellas?
Hehe >_> I bet that the patch was a placebo.
Well is this to just make things speedier, or to fix the crappy porting??
@okenny :): Trust me, the problems I've had with TF2 won't disappear with lies.
Good. I'm almost done with Ep. 1, this patch comes right on time.
Just fix the load times. I got annoyed with how long it took to load on Portal.
That, or add in Accomplisment points.
@excel_excel: The "crappy porting" on TF2 had the effect of a ridiculously poor framerate. So if things are speedier, I daresay that they are fixing it.
With the CoD4 PS3 patch a few days ago, this one today and UT3 next week, the Kotaku patch watch is under heavy pressure currently.
I sent the tip that this was coming a couple weeks ago...
None of my tips ever get posted...
Oh well, hope this improves the game somehow.
@okenny :): Do you ever post anything positive that isn't one of your weird sexual tirades?
Quicker load times please...
@TheCleaningGuy: He's a troll. Got the naked and the hair and everything.
See? [en.wikipedia.org]
He's here to be a troll that's useful, not just annoying.
Very good news. Now, only if we can find out what this actually fixes.
Would this fix frame issues? can a patch do that? that would be great.
@TheCleaningGuy: Yeah... about three accounts ago :( I find that the real me does fine though with my opinions. The sexual things are because am sick in the head though since I have have fetishes for penguins, Master Chief urine (known as game fuel) running down my supple nipples. All this might have something to do with the testicle poisoning I received years ago.
...
On topic, I find it really weird that the patch seems so big... the first thing that came to my mind was that they were working on a long list of laundry items and some of it may have made them liable hence the hush-hush on the change log. Thought this but passed on commenting about it because I didn't want to be seen as a negative person. I went with my second option which was clearly a low hanging fruit (my favorite (probably has something to do with my insecurities about my one sagging testicle (the poison you see))) but since this was pointed out as being negative as well, it seemed I failed :( I'll try to be less sexual and post more positive things like "good job" or "awesome!", or maybe even "It's about time!" next time <3
@ Polywhirl: what an interesting choice of picture there.
@TheCleaningGuy:Right, because placebo is always related to sexual innuendos :/
I have been avoiding TF2 on the 360 due to lag issues. I've been more then happy to steam it on PC. Is this a new patch or just the one that 360 people got earlier?
@slomo788: Sorry brain fart! I meant speedier as in connecting to online games, which wouldn't fix the overall problem of poor framerate, but we'll see what happens
So uh...can people stop complaining about patching at the slightest mention of the PC TF2? Because that would be lovely.
Okay, just did portal, framerate seems to have been resolved
@Polywhirl: @okenny :): Okay. I'll be more accepting next time, I apologize. =]
@Fyren: Actually a calling a patch a placebo wouldn't be sexual but negative.
@Ahsayuni: But, Portal never had framerate issues. It was only Episode 2. How was that?
@ sascha23: when you do the distant portal flings
Well, it hasn't stopped the grievers from flying around in the air and building sentries in the damned sky. I wish they'd get cracking on that one...
:\ So when I want to play tomorrow I have to download something first...
I'm glad I play PC games, so I don't have to put up with the hassle of patches and updates.
I've been waiting for this for awhile. I play TF2 on PS3 all the time and this is great news!
@ExplodingKayNine: LOL> I_R_O_N_Y at it's greatest!
@ExplodingKayNine: you are being sarcastic here, right?
@DigiMish: Good lord I hope so.
@ExplodingKayNine: Whats that? I couldn't see your comment with all the PC games I was just patching. :D
@ExplodingKayNine: Nominated. Oh so nominated.
...I hope to god you're sarcastic, or I'm going to look so dumb.
@excel_excel: Brain fart? So you have to call people names to get a point across? How pathetic... You know you could have just clarified your words normally without looking like a douche right?
@slomo788: Dude, before you start a fight, realize what he was saying.
It was just a typo.
He was saying "Sorry, I had a brain fart." Not that you were a brain fart.
Been waiting for this -- sad thing is the games were so good that I could deal with the longer loading times -- and the frame rate issues were there on HL2, but they were overrated and hardly made them unplayable. Still happy this is over.
i just want some downloadable maps for TF2.
@Furious_Liver:
More like hear you over the sound of the PC Battlefield (Insert Year Here) franchise, where every standalone release is a $50 beta with $30 (expansion) patches which includes content that should have been in the initial release.
@Polywhirl: Ah. Now I do feel like a fart. :(
It wouldn't kill the numbnuts at Valve and Infinity Ward to throw in a little Dual Shock 3 support with these patches.
Well I found two definite fixes. Some users (i.e like me) were having issues with the EA servers for TF2: 1) Friends weren't appearing on Friends Leaderboards and 2) Certain accounts were unable to connect to EA Servers to play TF2.
Just Google "tf2 cannot connect ps3" and you'll see that people have been whining about this stuff for some time.
Anyway it looks like it's been fixed now!
@Gagamus: Yes, but it shouldn't be tacked on either. I own UT3, Uncharted, but I never realized how I missed rumble until I played Warhawk.
@Polywhirl: It would help if PS3 had Accomplishments in the first place.
I thought the update was for the new maps in TF2 haha
Oh, and load times still haven't been fixed :(
I don't know if it's a placebo or not, but it seems to me that the framerate probs are gone, not that they were so bad in the first place.
i will be firing this up tonight, downloading the lovely patch and hoping that TF2 joins me to a game a tad quicker than before.
Oh yeah - quesiton to people here - does this apply in PALville?
you know I the only problems I had so far were in Half-Life 2 on 3 different occasions I could get a black screen but i could still see my self and i could just simply walk left or right and return to normal
All of the orange box games have frozen on me at one time or another. Maybe they fixed that?
Patch or not, I'm still buying the PS3 version of said box over the 360 one.
As I've said before, I'd rather have all my multiplatform games on the my PS3 just in case my 360 goes tits up one day.
Too little, too late.
If Valve actually cared for its customers, there wouldn't have been this ridiculously shitey port in the first place.
Then they take *four* months or so to fix it?
That's rubbish - to put it politely.
Word of mouth or no - I will *never* play any Half Life, Portal or any other Valve game again, because you simply cannot trust their products to come out as playable.
when will Bully be patched for the 360?
Keyboard + Mouse support? Anyone wanna give it a shot for us? Oh man, oh man! Please let this be, oh man....
Either way, I can't say that ANY of the load times were "excessive" on my PS3 OrangeBox. I also /barely/ noticed any of the "stuttering" - but coming from the PC world, some "stuttering" is acceptable when you're taxing your PC to the limit....
Still no 5.1 audio over optical :(
If this fixes the little problems with orange box PS3, I'll finally pick it up. I've been itching to play this
'Por-tal' the kids keep talking about.
@KenogaBrave: People do that on the PS3 version?
I've never seen that in the 360 version but sometimes I hear other players talking about similar glitches.
@PooPooKaKaBumBum: The PS3 version wasn't a Valve product, though. It's not really fair to blame them for its quality.
I tried it last night, it seems to have improved load times, and maybe a more consistent frame-rate. BUT...
FAIL FOR NO RUMBLE! YOU FUCKING FAIL! HOW HARD CAN IT BE!??!?!?
@ATimson: True. EA was technically responsible for the port. Though you can't really blame Playstation fans for being angry at Valve for not developing or porting any of their titles to the Playstation 3. It really just chalks up to Valve being too lazy to really take the initiative to work on the PS3. Or perhaps they just don't have the manpower. Either way, it's bullshit that they haven't even attempted to develop for the platform.
