Gamers have purchased more than six million songs for Rock Band since its November launch, Harmonix reports in a release that also details an upcoming patch for the music game that will include an in-game music store.
"Thank you to the music lovers who have helped Rock Band reach an incredible milestone of over 6 million purchased downloads at such an early stage," stated by Paul DeGooyer, SVP DVD, Gaming and Audio, MTV. "The success of Rock Band downloadable content to date firmly reinforces our vision and its potential as a platform for music discovery. By empowering players with the ability to customize their Rock Band library with a rapidly growing selection of rock artists and songs on a weekly basis and adding great new features such as the in-game music store, we are thrilled to give fans more ways to enhance and enjoy their Rock Band experience."
The free update for the game, set to hit Xbox Live and the Playstation Network this week, will include the music store as well as quite a few tweaks.
Music Store: The store will allow you to preview and purchase new songs from within the game, viewing and previewing songs as well as difficulty ratings for each instrument.
Revised Fan Caps: The number of fans a player can earn in easy, medium and hard settings have been increased to let players progress further in the Band World Tour.
More diverse songs in Band World Tour: Harmonix has fixed a bug that caused the same songs to pop up multiple times in teh same our of Band World Tour play.
Improved phoneme recognition: The detection and scoring for phoneme recognition has been tweaked.
Microphone Latency on PlayStation 3 improved: The microphone latency on the PS3 has been optimized.
Xbox 360 Band Logos are now visible through Xbox LIVE: A problem with parental controls was blocking them, now custom band logos are visible.
Faster loading of downloadable content: Load times have been sped up and DLC is now cached.

Nice but would it kill them to add voice chat to the PS3 version?
Nice but would it kill them to release the game in EU already ? =/ Can't... wait... want... Rock.. Band...
You had me at sex.
Oh wait, wrong thread
So, so nice. Thanks Harmonix. But what's a phoneme?
Nice but would it kill them to release muse hysteria for downloable content?
Well, the more diverse song thing will make me go back to world tour, and the other stuff's good too, but...gimme full albums already!
Six million paid for downloads, I'm happy to hear this. That's leverage to convince more record companies to allow their music to be used (hopefully original artists not covers). A closed online network where there's zero piracy and people are buying. Rock Band is a dream come true for the music industry.
Sweetness! I hope "Still Alive" will be available soon, too.
somehow i get the feeling parentalcontrols were doing its job with the logos on the 360...not looking forward to playing with a band with the name the 'flying phalluses' and their phallus related logo on the drum...
Good for them, imagine how well it will do when they acknowledge the existence of Europe.
Bass solo career would have been nice :(
@Rez23: Agreed, my wife and I love playing online but the lack of voice (or text) chat really sucks.
Cached DLC is a godsend! I hope contacting the server after every gig in BWT is sped up too.
@Tyrannical: Ditto!
None the less the updates are important ones and will further improve an already great game.
Solo Band World Tour would be nice. Makes no sense solo players have to do the crappy solo tours that consist of going through 50 songs with no random set lists or ability to gain buses, planes, vans, etc or anything else along those lines. Add one person and the computer picks up for the missing two. Why can't they just make the ocmputer take over for 3 of them and have it 1 player already? So annoying and completely retarded on their part.
Sweet! This is just the update we've been waiting for. The roommates and I have already finished BWT on Medium and were pissed how hard it was to get more fans on Hard. That and buying songs from the PSN Store was a PAIN IN THE ASS (as I'm sure it was through Marketplace), so this in-game store, that acutally lets you hear the song no less, is a Godsend.
@creid: Simply put, it's the sounds you make in a language.
@Verge: It should be obvious by this point that they really don't have to. At least when you guys get it it will be the updated version (most likely with more songs on the disc too), so you won't have to go through the same BS we've had to deal with for the past six months. Be grateful you won't have to play 'Wanted Dead or Alive' or 'Say it Ain't So' 8 times during the first hour.
There's still more work to be done I'm sure tho...
(for example: How bout letting people with that nifty controller keyboard thing actually USE IT to enter quotes for your musicians? :P)
this patch is made of pure Awesomium. The store is perfect addition and really helps. The fixes are very cool and shows that they're paying attention to the fans.
UK motherfuckers :(:(:(
Will be interesting to see the numbers once the game is available in ALL regions.
can i use my GH3 guitar now???
An odd idea, but what if you download a song that you DON'T want? Is there a way to delete DLC?
I Desperately need this patch. My game takes an extra minute and a half to load because of all the DLC I had. I know that's not a lot, but when I wanna rock, I don't wanna be waiting.
Also, full albums woooooooooooo!
WTF? No online band world tour?
this is so awesome!
Great update and all, but where is the World Tour online patch!! The marketing team pushed the World Tour Mode as the best part of the game, but yet failed to launch with the ability to play the World Tour Mode online with friends. I understand it wasn't quite ready at launch, but it's been out for 4 months now. Great game, but they really dropped the ball on that part.
Improved phoneme recognition: The detection and scoring for phoneme recognition has been tweaked.
Microphone Latency on PlayStation 3 improved: The microphone latency on the PS3 has been optimized.
Oh, thank GOD. These two things in conjunction are pretty much what have been killing me in Expert vocals. As it is, I've gold-starred almost everything... except the songs with the talky bits. And trust me, I know how to pronounce the phrase "just take it easy", you stupid, stupid game. *hits PS3 with microphone* ;)
Now I might actually be able to get through "Sabotage" without totally sucking... what a concept.
@janai:
Or be able to sing "I think I'm paranoid" without having to sound like an effeminate loser >>
In all seriousness though, this update is exactly why I bought Rock Band. Harmonix so delivers with their games.
@Rez23: If it was as easy to add as it is on Xbox LIVE, I'm sure they would have already done this. The fact is, the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band really is the "premier" experience for this title (as well as most 3rd party efforts).
i just bought about 15 songs for rock band, which i'm sure put them over the six million mark. you're welcome, harmonix.
This is a pretty sweet patch.
Now if only we could create personal setlists... or at least create our own filters (perhaps a "favorites" tab) when playing in Quick Play.
I hate having to scroll down 120 songs to reach the hard songs.
@aurahack: Well, being a woman with pretty much exactly the same vocal range as Shirley Manson, that's not my problem in particular. I have to do some ridiculous mid-song octave leaps to get through, say, "Wave of Mutilation", though. ;)
@knickers: Yup, you can delete it from the main Xbox menu, where you'd delete any other demo/movie/whatever you've downloaded, and then redownload whenever.
It's nice if you don't want, say, Thrasher to come up in a random setlist when you're playing for fun with a bunch of drunk people. Or, you know, ever again.
@Tyrannical: seconded. Bass Solo career should be added for sure. Also, waaay more songs, I'm getting bored. 3 measly songs a week is like a cock-tease from Pam Anderson..
That is what happens when you don't over charge for DLC, you sell a ton. And these improvements are a very welcome addition, always felt that a Music Store would be a great fit.
@Boy Howdy: Sorry for the momentary lapse there... I've got a PS3 and not a 360. Shoulda been more precise about that.
Rock Band is pretty much the best purchase I've made in a long time.
@RemyDuvalle:
Yah, I am waiting for the improved music selection screen. I will need it laid out like a music player soon. Once they release albums they HAVE to improve it, right? I hope so. Grouping by artist, playlists, and shuffle play would be amazing.
