IGN has the scoop on the controller for the eagerly anticipated DS version of Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero: On Tour will come with a Guitar Grip that plugs into the GBA slot of your DS and allows players to fret along with a song while strumming digital strings on the screen. The Guitar Grip includes a hand strap and a little storage compartment for the specially designed stylus pick.
IGN reports that the microphone will also be used, probably to activate Star Power mode with a Jack Black-esque rock scream.
On Tour, due this summer, will support both co-op and competitive multiplayer using the DS' local wireless functions, a battle mode and come packed with more than 20 songs.

I can already picture it ...
hand cramp x 10000000
But it does look cool tho.
Still no chance of completing through the fires and flames though :( this is awesome though!
looks really annoying to use :(
But awesome idea!! :D
Or would that be:
wrist cramp x 10000000
4 buttons... hey, this is made for my Medium skilz.
"IGN reports that the microphone will also be used, probably to activate Star Power mode with a Jack Black-esque rock scream."
Now you're just asking me to play it outside.
looks like "Hand Killing Hero: On Tour (of breaking your goddamn hands)" really. Also whats with that "On Tour" font, makes me think 1990s and Nerf toys.
I just sent this in like, 5 seconds ago :\
Heh, anyways, The peripheral really made me smile, since it looks like something I would never come up with.... If it's not too expensive for a DS game, I'll buy it
Meh...
Thats going to kill your wrists
That shape looks like the DS Phat people won't be able to play it...
If this works, I might consider buying a DS in the future, the design looks well thought out. But I'm also a little sceptical about the hand cramp part but I guess it's part of what GH stands for. :)
The Guitar Hero DS commercial that is embedded in the link makes it look like you'll look like a retard playing this game.
That better come with a tube of Ben-Gay for those hand cramps. >_<
If this works and works well I will pick this up. I'm not big on Guitar Hero but this is just interesting as hell.
@jay427: Exactly what I thought, and if they make it only compatible with the DS Lite I'm gonna be really pissed off.
Guitar hero will be way too easy now.
@Queasy: As opposed to looking super cool while playing the real thing.
=D
i never would have thought of this. innovative design. i'm worried about the sound quality though.. motley crue or motorhead coming through those tiny speakers?
in what social situation would it be best to play this game?
How are they gonna fit songs on a tiny DS cart?
Ok this looks cool but now you have to imagine yourself playing this thing. Playing Guitar Hero with a mini plastic banjo makes you look like an asshat as is, but its acceptable. This thing scientifically increases your asshatness by a whopping 230%. If you want to EVER get laid do not let any human see you using this. My suggestion is you use the included stylus to gouge out their eyes and swear them to secrecy.
Oh and screaming to activate Star power? You must accept the fact that people may slap you complusively if you do this anywhere near them.
tell me this is a early April fools joke...
talk about hand cramp
@MasonL87:
Judging from the way it appears to fit flush to the case of the Lite there it does look to be only lite compatible. Shorter gba slot strikes again.
Also, if this is like 50$ or something stupid like that then no dice.
Now that looks cool, but not surprised. The DS is a superbly designed piece of kit.
Daaaaaaamn.
I still can't figure out how you're supposed to strum. Yes they put in a pic-like stylus which, I guess, means that you strum the bottom screen with it, but that doesn't seem accurate at all and sounds uncomfortable as hell. Not to mention how are you supposed to use the wammy?
Nonetheless, I'll probably end up buying this. Le sigh...
Check out the ultra-cheesy trailer: [videogames.yahoo.com]
Oh no... that looks so clunky, and only 4 buttons! I may grab it if it features all new songs though.
But it looks like there is better "guitar" playing in Pinky Street: Kira Kira Music Hour for DS, and faaar better rhythm gaming in DJ Max Portable 1 and 2 for PSP...
BTW, after Pinky Street, nothing digs a groove in your screen/protector faster than strumming one spot a zillion times, so stock up on scratch covers!
Sweet jesus. My carpal tunnel is going to come back with a vengeance.
@Modus_Operandi: The only thing more pathetic than a nerd is a nerd that's ashamed of being a nerd.
Believe me, there is NOTHING remotely cool about playing guitar hero, on a Fisher Price plastic toy or otherwise. Just embrace the fact that you'll look like a tit.
Will this be an issue for left handed people?
Does look cool, but I can also see it being a pain in the ass to play. I keep trying to picture how I'd handle that thing and can't think of a single comfortable way!
@Demonbird: how is $50 bad for a DS game that comes with it's ow cotroller? I paid $40 for FFXII for DS, it's only $10 more for the super gay looking addon...
This just looks bad though, I can't imagin how bad this will play.
How do you hold it, strum, push down on the "frets" and see the screen all at the same time? I just can't see this thing working in such a small space.
I see alot of unintentinally simulated masterbating motions while someone uses this. I also see alot of intentionally simulated masterbating motions while someone is using this.
that seriously looks like a bitch to control.
"COME'N ON YeeeeeeaaaaaHAH!" Will be the cry I use to activate Star Power...on my train ride to work.
Wicked?
Did you spend any time in Massachusetts?
It actually looks pretty uncomfortable.
@Gadgetron: but these kids seem to be enjoying it [www.videogameszone.de]
@Sinnbox:
Maybe it isn't worth 50$ to me for inferior sound and cramped controls?
This looks like a joke.
@scotty: As did I.
The lack of the orange button disappoints me. Unless they somehow ramp up the difficulty for the hard/expert players I doubt I'll get it. Although I probably won't get it anyway, since it'll most likely be $40 and incredibly uncomfortable.
@ErskinPig: Oh I dontmind people knowing Im a nerd but I didnt realize this meant I had to make a public spectacle of myself. This is a portable device. Am I really supposed to "jam" to Enter Sandman on the train? Does anyone remember those "Hit sticks"? The drum sticks that came attache dto a tiny speaker you clipped on your belt. Youd hit the air and its make a noise. Ok. Thats cooler than this thing.
@Setzer IIDX: I don't know about you, but I look pretty cool playing GH. With my thousand yard stare and slacked jaw, coupled with the beautiful, almost rhythmic clicks of my strum bar the ladies know where to go when they want some action from an Expert player. This game will only expand the exposure the world gets of my flying fingers on the fretwork. What else could they want?
you better be able to activiate star power some other way than vocally. On a plane? a bus? in a public venue? Not gonna fly, sorry. Why even bother with a vocal function on this game? What were they thinking?
Wow, that's actually really clever. I was wondering how they'd pull it off.
Looks really cool to me. The picture instantly reminded me of this great toy of days gone by:
[www.dustygizmos.com]
Couldn't they have gotten that fifth button in? I fear that this will be too easy. Then again, the hand cramps are sure to double the challenge instantly.
@Crosswayboy:
Holy shit. That is seriously cheesy. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Really, Guitar Hero is the perfect game for a portable. You can play a song, save and quit. BUT, and this is huge, I do not see people playing that in public. If you are my age and playing that you might as well have a slap band on and be wearing those roller-shoe things.
@sanyo:
The DS is a very casual portable gaming machine, and I think that they made Guitar Hero DS to fit that. You dig?
@Erwin: Looking at the vid, the mic seems to be used to "blow out" your guitar when its on fire...
Looks Tedious.
i really hope my DS Phat can use it =x
As someone who's been playing GH games since the first (and on expert), this looks like a lot of fun
One of the main attractions of Guitar Hero is that you feel like you're playing a guitar. The DS format reduces GH to a rhythm game with a tie-in. It'll sell well, but it waters down the whole rocking experience. Makes me a little sad for the franchise.
A DS karaoke game would be a better fit, donchathink?
Hahahahahahahahahah.
It really does look like a poor April Fools joke.
Who strums a guitar sideways?
Yeah. I'm okay with Rock Band for now. OOH!
Note: Rock Band for the DS. Good idea or best idea?
@Chanaluss:
Oh damn, that's a good point. I wonder if this will work with the DS Phat?
@John-irl: That's a disappointment. I can still do it anyway!
