Metal Gear Solid Mobile On Verizon

mgsmobile.jpg Metal Gear Solid Mobile? Why post that? Well I figured that thousands of you out there plunked down $600 for a console on the mere promise of a new Metal Gear Solid game, so you might just be interested in a mobile version, especially one that only costs $10.99 ($4.99 monthly). Available today exclusively to Verizon Wireless customers (dammit), Metal Gear Solid Mobile is a full on MGS game, promising dramatic 3D art and camera work never-before-seen in a mobile game. Along with your standard stealth espionage action, the game also utilizes camera phone functionality, allowing you to take real world pictures and use them in the in-game camo system. It sounds pretty damn nifty, and the game has already won two awards at the 2008 International Mobile Gaming Awards. Unfortunately I am not a Verizon customer, or I'd let you know how it played. I'll just be hiding under this tiny little box until my carrier is deemed worthy.

METAL GEAR SOLID® MOBILE NOW AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY TO VERIZON WIRELESS CUSTOMERS

Popular Video Game Franchise Hits Verizon Wireless Phones With
3D Graphics and Original Game Play
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., and EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, and Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc., a leading developer, publisher and manufacturer of electronic entertainment properties, today announced Metal Gear Solid® Mobile is available for purchase exclusively through Verizon Wireless.

Metal Gear Solid Mobile is an award-winning game, having recently received the Grand Prix and Operator's Choice awards at the 2008 International Mobile Gaming Awards. Metal Gear Solid Mobile features never-before-seen dramatic 3D art displays and camera work that greatly surpass the current standard of mobile games and allows players to shift the viewpoint from first to third person and to control a variety of weapons. The game also takes advantage of the camera functionality - for example, Verizon Wireless customers can use their camera phones to capture images and the game will incorporate the image colors into the players' camouflage system.

Designed by the same team behind the Metal Gear Solid console games, Kojima Productions, and developed in conjunction with Ideaworks3D and utilizing its Airplay™ 3.5 SDK, Metal Gear Solid Mobile is an original game designed specifically for the mobile platform. Players face the same extreme tension of solitary infiltration that fans of the classic tactical espionage action game have come to expect from the Metal Gear Solid series, previously released to the PlayStation® and PlayStation®2.

Verizon Wireless customers can purchase Metal Gear Solid Mobile in the Get Fun & Games shopping aisle in the Get It Now® virtual store. The game is available for $4.99 monthly access or $10.99 for unlimited use purchase. Verizon Wireless customers can get Metal Gear Solid Mobile on more than 20 popular Get It Now-capable phones, including the Voyager™ by LG and the LG VX8700. Download charges for Get It Now applications vary and airtime or megabyte charges may apply when browsing, downloading and using certain applications. Customers need a Get It Now-enabled handset and Verizon Wireless digital service to access the Get It Now virtual store.

For more information on Verizon Wireless products and services, customers can visit a Verizon Wireless Communications Store, call 1-800-2 JOIN IN or visit www.verizonwireless.com. For more information about Metal Gear Solid Mobile, please visit www.konamimobile.com.

  • I bought the cellphone version of Guitar Hero 3, big mistake. I can't see this one being much better. My damn fat fingers end up hitting multiple buttons.

  • I bought Castlevania: Order of Shadows. That was the last cellphone game I will buy. The only really good one I've ever gotten was Doom. Everything else has been totally and utterly shitty. Orcs & Elves was *okay* but I got stuck partway through due to a bug and it's not worth replaying.

Cellphone gaming will always suck until the controls work better, or the games are designed to work with the limitations of the controls. Turn-based games would work okay.

  • Oh, and I wanted to mention Castlevania: OoS because it's also a Konami product. I don't know if it's the same studio doing this game, but I've played three cellphone games by Konami now (the other two were the DDR games), and they've all been terrible.

  • too bad i have a blackberry anyway so i doubt this crap is compatible.

  • After Call of Duty 4, I am leery of mobile games without reviews. That game sucked so fricking hard.

  • megaman 2 was the last cellphone game i got. i'll stick with that, thank you... it's pure gold.

  • I couldn't imagine playing this on a cell phone. DS port, anyone?

  • I guess if your crazy for MGS its cool, i mean i love the series maybe enough to buy a collectors edition? but to just get a game cause it says MGS no thx :(

  • Odd--I was offered this just today, and I'm on AT&T, not Verizon. It was also $6.99 instead of $10.99, and I've already confirmed it's the MSX/NES game ported over.

I buy cell phone games constantly, but most are ass. I've had a few big winners--Assassin's Creed, God Of War: Betrayal, Resident Evil: Genesis, Super Hero Guy--with a lot of stinkers.

And yes, Castlevania: Order Of Shadows unseats Castlevania 64 as the black sheep of the family.

  • I hate cell phone games. Why wouldn't I just play games on my DS?

  • Sounds cool, but I'm not falling for it.

I bought Oblivion once for my phone; biggest piece of retarded shit I've ever played.

Back on the topic of Metal Gear though...I think MGS: Essential Edition should be available today. Gonna attempt to go out and pick that up; I'm sick today, and this would make a nice 'stay-in-bed' game.

  • @Foggynotion:
    lol,

    sorry.

  • @Linnard: That's weird, it's like it was a different game...completely.

  • The cellphone game market has a looong way to go here. Most games are going to be designed around the 'average' handset to make the most sales. Until that 'average' handset downloading these games is not the free Razor you got with a tank of gas, the games are going to be crap. Hopefully the iPhone game news and the possible release of a Sony PSPhone will change this. Until then, I'll stick with my DS, PSP, and my spider solitaire on my Blackberry. :-)

God damn it. I JUST bought Metal Gear for my phone like a week ago. If I'd have known this was coming...

@the wheel: Yeah, MM2 is gold on a cell phone. Even though you can't use Metal Man's ability to its full potential due to not being able to press two buttons at once.

  • If you thought controls in MGS games are tough, try them on a dial pad :D

I can only wonder how many times you'd have to yell "FUCK! SNAKE! DONT CRAWL! RUUN!!!!"

  • Unfortunately the only games I can ever seem to bear playing on a cellphone are usually puzzle games and strategy games that don't require a lot of fast paced button control. Cellphones don't typically have good control surfaces for anything else.

  • Lumines Mobile is a great mobile game. Mayhaps the only one worth playing up to this day.

  • pfft just wait till gaming on the iphone to really take off. It will redefine what we think about gaming on phones.

  • When are you guys going to stop saying the 600$ console? geez its now 399- 450$ Also as a side note related to the actual topic. Who wants to play a full game on a 3 inch screen?

  • @Linnard: Yea, I have that one, too. Except on Verizon and it's not this game. It's kind of frustrating trying to play Metal Gear on the phone, though. I get so impatient and try to run through rooms too quickly. The AI is stupid.

Just downloaded it. Pretty impressive for a mobile game - the graphics are better than the PSone version (because of the small screen), and the story takes place between MGS and MGS2.

  • Oh, God -- it's canon?

Kojima, why have you forsaken me?!

  • @Linnard: THere are two Metal Gear games on Mobile the one you were offered is a remake of the original game. THis game on Verizon is a new gamne. With an original storyline and fits into the Metal Gear History.

  • Why didn't they just bring this to the PSP? A canon MGS game between MGS1 and MGS2? Who wouldn't play that?

  • Castlevania Order of the Shadow was done by some American studio if i remember correctly. i hear its awfully shitty. I had a port of the original Castlevania on my old phone, but i remember the framerate being a powerpoint presentation(due to my phone i guess) and it sucked.

  • No mention of the fact that Kohima himself lent a hand in the design and overall making-sureing that this game doesn't suck? Weak.

  • @Lijik:
    Erm, *Kojima

  • I just downloaded it thanks to you guys and it fawking rocks music is awesommmmmmmmmmmmmmme (Killer Instinct announcer voice).

  • We are YEARS away from any decent 3D games on a mobile phone. I wouldn't touch the mobile version of MGS with a ten foot pole.

  • FUCK Verizon.

But damn, I'd really like to play this. And it's canon?
WTF??? This is kinda dumb. I'm buying a PS3 for MGS4, but there's no way in hell I'm getting Verizon for MGM. I'll just wait for someone to put a walkthrough on youtube or something.

This better get a PSP/PS2 version. This is seriously dumb.

  • Cellphones are just not good gaming platforms, period. Esp. in the US where most of us have larger hands, I cannot imagine trying to WASD (or rather it's cellphone equivalent) through a 3D game. I thought the N-Gage would teach companies that people don't want a cellphone based gaming system.

Oh well, it will only be a few years time when handheld platforms will take over. You can already use Skype to dial landlines if you have a wifi connection and a newer PSP model. Thrown in bluetooth for a headset and GSM support and there you go.

  • I bought this while I was waiting at the Doctor's office this morning. I played through a couple of the VR missions. So far so good.

  • I love Metal Gear Solid as much as the next guy but 10.99 is RIDICULOUS. Hell, the only reason I even play cell phone games is that due to some weird technical glitch, I'm never charged for them. Considering most cell phone games are 6-7 bucks, in addition to being absolute trash, cell phones need to be considered irrelevant gaming platforms to developers. You have nothing to work with except a minuscule system architecture capable of very little, four directional buttons and one teeny button in the middle and if you're lucky, two soft keys. There is only one good cell phone game that has ever been made. It's called Tetris, and that's because Tetris has kicked ass on every single platform that is has ever existed on.

The other blow here is Verizon Wireless exclusivity, at least temporarily. First of all, AT&T is a bigger AND BETTER carrier. AT&T should have gotten it if this was an exclusivity deal. Second of all, if it wasn't an exclusivity deal, EVERYONE should have gotten it. Third of all, what is this subscription bullshit? I've never seen any MMORPG's on these phones. What are they doing thinking they can rip people off with some kind of subscription model?

  • Image of ca$h ca$h at 02:38 PM on 03/19/08 *

Wow, lots of bitterness/hate coming toward a game no one except me has admitted playing. There's a bunch of ingnoramuses here. For example:

@YUYU: That's an awful long post for someone who doesn't know what the hell they're talking about! =P

  • Having played the game today I must say that I am impressed.
The game rus well and has some cool features. One major thing is the first person perspective which makes headshots much easier. This is no port, it is a whole new game. The graphics look very good and everything is nice and crisp; the textures are about ps1 quality. The controls take some time to get used to though. If you have verizon and a phone that runs it well and you love MGS, download it now! I bought the monthly rate since I can't see myself playing it for more than a month and MGS games aren't known for their high replay value.

  • Well, at least they didn't revive a great PS1 franchise and then put in on the cell phone.

    Oh yeah. Parasite Eve.

  • @peAr_nectAr: Because, in Japan, mobile gaming is a huge market and probably the fasted growing video game platform -- one which IS NOT going away.

All of you guys should just be thankful that it's getting ANY domestic release at all, because there are about a thousand other mobile games that will probably never see the light of day outside of Japan, including games fitting into several series such as Biohazard, Devil May Cry, Rockman DASH (Mega Man Legends), Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Mana, Parasite Eve... And that's just a tiny sampling from Square-Enix and Capcom.

  • I picked this up for my voyager yesterday and played it at the barber shop for 20 minutes so far so good. But it is awkward playing with the right thumb. Looks great and has a cool story.

  • Wow, would you believe this is actually awesome?

Controls are way forgiving. I just downloaded it. It looks better than the original Solid on playstation.

It's got the codec conversations, vr training, and everything. Can't believe this is on my cellphone and it's not even 2mb.

  • LMAO AT&T being the BETTER. Verizon doooookieeeees hard on all phone carriers best service best customer service puhlease Verizon was the only carrier that had service during that one bad hurricane season in Florida. If I had those other guys my family would have been worried since they can not get through to me. Verizon owns all we got Metal Gear exclusive Konami knows who is the best phone provider. *Goes back to rocking Metal Gear

  • damn, I am using at&t

  • @Gagamus: You mean the shitty Tetris that ends up kicking me out after only one line cleared to cough up $7 for a game, and that not including the taxes and 1 cent per kilobyte download rate to DOWNLOAD the game after I pay for it?

Screw companies who won't let you install applications any other way than using their data network to put more money in the shareholder's pockets.

And being Verizon-only doesn't matter. It'll hit pirate sites with JAD/JAR cracks and such pretty soon.

  • IF YOU'RE GETTING TO THIS PAGE THROUGH GOOGLE, READ THIS. IF YOU LIKED METAL GEAR SOLID FOR PS1, and remember it fondly then get it. Obviously the story is not the same, but I will say that it was pretty fun. The game is about 2 to 3 hours, depending how difficult you made the game. I say it is worth the 10 bucks if you like MGS.

  • all cell phone games are good for is wasting precious battery power. to hell with innovative 3d mobile graphics just pick up a DS or PSP - lets see a battery that can last 2 weeks on one charge then come talk to me.
