It doesn't take much to impress the folks at the Guinness Book of World Records, I guess. They deemed the gathering of 80 cosplayers, each dressed up as a video game character, "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" that they've ever had on record. The GameSpot report on the matter points out that the record wasn't officially recorded prior to the event, so it wasn't exactly hard.
That certainly doesn't mean that the 30 kids sporting Mario outfits from Argyle Primary School, Kings Cross aren't adorable. We're just expecting the record to be smashed by the weekend. There's surely a con happening somewhere.
UK cosplayers set Guinness World Record [GameSpot]

lawl. the one in the middle is grabbing his warppipe.
Obviously the Guinness Book of World Records people have yet to attend an anime convention. I'm sure many a record can be found there...
I hope he doesn't have any Piranha plants in there, or those other kids are in trouble. LOL
eighty huh... that's pretty impressive. go britain - world record for crappy cosplay! yeehaa
@MushroomBoy1022: That has to be the most embarrassing thing EVAR.. I wonder if the guy who was taking the picture was trying to be a dick, or was it simply an accident.. =\.. Or was the kid just cold?
Uh... what is Guinness smoking?
Surely Akihabara has larger gatherings of gamer cosplayers on a daily basis. Not to mention all the conventions that take place every year all over the damn place.
Double-digits?
Pssh!
The only reason Guinness hasn't recorded the hordes at cons is because they know they'd get mentally traumatize by the fat man going as Peach.
@MushroomBoy1022: He's trying to use the mushroom in a non-intended way.
There's a con in Boston. Someone should tell the Guinness people...
@MushroomBoy1022: lol that pose is just unforgivable.
Does that kid have his hand down his overalls?
*uses spray bottle*
No, no! Bad! Your pockets are lower. Lower!
@BambooCactus: Just what I was thinking. I think they could see that many Cloud characters in the first hour.
Actually, this should destroy it: [www.sakuracon.org]
I live in Seattle and remember seeing at least 7 or 8 Kingdom Hearts characters walking out of Cheesecake Factory last year during Sakura-con weekend. I wish I could've got that on camera. It could've made for some great captions!
I went to my friends private school for an anime party thing, they had way more then 80 kids cosplaying.
i'd laugh if this record can hold until TGS
I looked in the latest Guinness book. There's now a world record for the largest gathering of furries .__.
Let's face it, there's so many places we can go with this, I request that we have a contest for the best caption. Here are mine:
Looks like SOMEONE'S got a case of the poison mushrooms!
At this Mario Party, someone hid all the Goombas.
Watch out! Johnny will shoot star bits all over you!
It appears his is tossing his Shy Guy.
@Zamzoph: haha. What is it at?
Now I want to find some obscure "largest gathering" record to break!
Guinness is pretty much garbage. I wonder if anyone really cares about the 'world's largest national flag made entirely out of cake' or 'world's largest national flag drawn entirely with crayons' or worse yet, 'man who has regurgitated and reswallowed his own vomit the most times using a single glass and straw'
has it been done before with a Super Mario Bros. 3 video game commercial. link:

@SolInvictus:
1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes
I agree though, it seems that Guinness has lowered its standards and lost the "respect" it once had.
The last con I went to must have had double that many ... however, the Spyro costume is pretty good, I have to admit! And, if that Sonic was homemade -- nice job!
@bangbangblah: "Largest gathering of people: 2, me and my editor. I have no friends." Lol!
@bangbangblah: At some furry con, obviously. Worst yet, the record was important enough to warrent a picture, which is how I took notice in the first place.
*Japan*
That country has to have the most cosplayers. I heard you can just find people walking down the streets in cosplay.
Why would Guinness host such an event in Britain?
Finally I can sleep... After all, everyday until this moment I allways tought before sleeping "When will they register some cosplay record in guinness?" And now I have fufilled my duty in life...
Actually no, but I allways think about osmething when I see those records: "They've got nothing else to do right?"
At least it's kids doing it & not adults shaming themselves.
HEY! Show some love for these cosplayers. Do they have to be at some major overpriced con to exhibit their gamer pride. And sure, Guinness is a bit out of touch, but they should at least get brownie pints for recognizing this subculture.
And that Spyro costume is awesome!
@dexterr: Sorry they are not dressed like Mario plus all of those people are not real. Computers have tricked you again. So the record is 30 people? World Records sure are not what they used to be.
@indiemike:
Haya looka I found a Tiny Mushroom!
Gordon Freeman is looking a little overweight.
80? Thats it? Thats gonna be broken real quick
The kid in the middle....too funny!
I'm sure this gathering was beaten...oh..like yesterday in Japan I bet. Seems like a waste to ask people to gather around. Just go hunt for them in conventions. You'll find tons more. So simple!
I actually went to the site to see the record holds for games.
Its quite interesting. I suggest you check it out.
@jackal888: the cosplayers don't even got the (M) hat logo. There something attached below there neck. When did mario were sport shoes or pink shoes. Mario has brown standard dress shoes or boot shoes.
My question is...
WHY... is that kid has his hand inside of his suit?
it's not only inside, it's right in the middle of his... beep* AND!! Look at his face.. He is moaning
i just noticed that theres a mario wearing what appears to be a burka under her/his cap...
@mossberg: or a hijab i forget the correct name
The kid to the right of Warp Whistle Boy has a smoke behind his ear, and the kid on the far left is wearing pink, flowery shoes.
This picture's kinda like a Where's Waldo minus the hint of satisfaction for getting to the next page.
Aww, look all those tiny Marios...and not a Luigi in sight.
@dexterr:
Beat me to it, that was the example I was going to use. Nice job.
That's not a Warp Pipe or a Piranha Planet it's a Chain Chomp!
wtf is up with that guys face on the 4th pic over at gamespot?
I bet the Guinness judge's kid was one of those Marios.
Apparently, these judges have never been to Comiket. Literally hundreds of cosplayers, many from games, gather there.
Goto a anime convention, and you can find at least 80 Links alone.
Love how they just paid a bunch of kids to show up and handed out Mario costumes.
How about the world's largest gathering of games characters without a single Final Fantasy character? You could set that record with a few friends and be confident that it would never be broken at a convention, although it could possibly be broken at Blizz-Con.
Eighty...
For fucks sake! Show some goddamn effort next time. I could break this with a few phone calls and e-mails.
I was the adjudicator for the attempt yesterday - maybe 80 is not so many by Harajuku standards but the whole point of world records is breaking them, duh!
Anyway it's still a decent number & at least we're certain everyone was actually dressed as a game character, which is much less clear at anime conventions because for the costume to qualify it has to be from a character that appeared in games first. (i.e., Cloud Strife is fine, Son Goku is not)
For this one we had to weed out, like, 20 x Haruhi Suzumiyas, 10 x Light Yagamis, and 1 Ranma 1/2(!) because they aren't videogames characters.
So quit moaning and send your stuff to us at [gamers.guinnessworldrecords.com]
Anime Boston IS this weekend...
I've seen more cosplayers than that in a single room.. Seriously, this isn't a record for most cosplayers, it's the record for being the first douche-bags to try and claim that record.
Send a single Guinness World Record representative to Japan with a camera. They'll have that record beaten before they even leave the airport.
That's exactly why I don't give a flying f for Guinness World Records anymore.
When I was a kid, Guinness World Records were about almost impossible to reach records and titles. Impressive stuff you just don't see everyday.
Nowadays it has become more of a variety show or something. Anyone can break a record. It has become meaningless.
