The house of Final Fantasy is bringing its Square Enix Member program stateside, starting March 24. However, if you want to pre-register, securing your username of choice, you can do that right now. What do you get for submitting all your personal information? We're not 100% sure, but Square Enix is promising access to "exclusive interviews, blogs, giveaways and more."
We don't think that the service will be substantively on par with Square Enix's Japanese equivalent, which gives gamers access to stuff like Virtual World and other desirable membership benefits. We'll see. I found the registration process unusually clunky, but if you're a Square Enix diehard, it may be worth your three minutes.

"I'm a member of Square Enix and all I got was this stupid keychain"
i signed up cause i was pretty bored earlier today. hopefully i'll get something cool out of it
now if only Nintendo brought their club to the states
If I get anything out of it, I'd be happy.
Registered! It can't hurt. Much. ... I hope.
This announcement was too boring to absorb. It's like my mind closed the blast doors to protect itself against a disasterous influx of boredom.
"What are your favorite Square Enix game series?"
Is one of the questions during the registration, and there's no Chrono on the list.
F...
@Valaris: I like how they broke Final Fantasy up in to about four different choices as well.
@Nirolak: Well..they are traditional different games on their own.
I mean I can see someone liking the Tactics series and disliking the "Final Fantasy compilation series."
@Dr.Chocobo: Correction "Final Fantasy 7 compilation series."
@Valaris: I thought the same thing. WTF. And the "Do you play games online?" didn't have a choice for PC games online. It had Console or nothing.
I sign up. I mean, Free is free... until it isn't.
here's an idea square, why don't you actually release something without taking 5 years to do so? Hate to sound bitter, but I am. >.> <.< Signed up too.
What the heck is the difference between a logon ID and nickname and why can't they be the same? :\

Great, Squenix-Land doesn't seem that far off now...oh crap, I forgot! Kingdom Hearts! FF could be part of 'licensing-gone-wrong-fantasy-land', it would be incredible!
Is it only for U.S.?
So I should start reserving usernames like cloud_strife and sephiroth, right?
@henhowc: Yeah, that's pretty perplexing as well. I suppose it's an added (and unnecessary) layer of security.
@badmoogle: Open to Canadians as well! Yes, I'm a sucker for Squeenix... ^^;;
I signed up. [Waits for tommorows announcement that this was a phishing scam like that Dreamcast one.]
[Waits for Squre Enix store to have products and for this sign up to mean anything]
[Dies of old age.]
Please put a nasty tasting energy drink and a plastic figure I could have gotten at the comic store 3 years ago on my gravestone, sonny.
If they give me information about when Chrono Trigger is coming to the Virtual Console, PS Store, or any other medium where I can either download\buy\own it (that doesn't include dusting off my old SNES and trying to find a working SNES cart), I'll do it.
Otherwise, they can fuck right off.
Hopefully, this'll be like Nintendo's club in Japan. >___>
@badmoogle: works for canada.
@SmilingPolitely: &@QC8472:I was wondering about Europe...
@mossberg: When I signed up for PlayOnline YEARS ago before it had anything to do with, ya know, playing...online...Square sent me a free stuffed Vivi plushie, so who knows, we might get something cool.
signed up. lots of cool usernames are still available, so gogogo
@superbagman: I signed up for PlayOnline back then and never got mine. To say I was a bit peeved at them was a nice way to put it. I still wnat that stupid plush.
It's not for Europe/Australia, but I signed up anyways. <_<'
I'm signing up, but for some reason I have this dread that it's going to be another Dreamcast scam thing.
Well, I'm not going to be so hasty to sign up just yet until this is proven real. Even if it's real, which I'm sure it most likely is, I really haven't had an interest in inside information about what Square-Enix has in store for gamers down the line in a while. They really have to be offering something nice for me to register.
Free stuff is great, but I have enough junk cluttering my apartment. I'll just wait patiently for what they announce like I always have.
Fairly sure that it's real, considering that even the main page ([www.square-enix.com]) for Square-Enix NA mentions it. Unless of course, someone bothered with the convoluted plan of not only hacking the main site, but also setting up an entire sign-up page complete with a false VeriSign seal plus accessing the autonomous Square-Enix mailing system for a perfect image.
Eh, I suppose paranoia might be justified in this situation...but it has its limits as well. =P
@KeroseneClimax: Oh Crap!
I should have thought of that...
@superbagman: Maybe we'll get something here!
Not bad took no time to sign up at all.
I registered for the Japanese version pretty much when it premiered. You get email about once every week or two. Some of them are just, "Hey, here's some new CDs and games coming out, here's a bit of info on some manga in the latest issue of Shounen GanGan."
However, some have more neat stuff. Exclusive desktop wallpapers and calendars are pretty common, and they also have other desktop goodies like alarm clocks and things. About once a month they have a feature on an upcoming game, usually including a mini-site with interviews and other info you might not be able to find on the official site. They also sometimes create fan zones with additional info related to games (right now they have an FFIV fan zone with stuff dealing with the GBA and DS versions, and a bit of stuff on the sequel).
Beyond that, they have limited time offers for things like posters and other goodies, exclusive trailers which they show behind closed doors at game shows, and I'm sure you get the idea.
Why is Einhander not listed as a favorite?
Boo-urns.
@GOLD5: LOL! awesome post!
I signed up and will probably forget that I was a member in 1/2 a year from now... whatever
I signed up, but I wish that they would have included ActRaiser on the favorite's list. Chrono is obviously a worse omission, but I doubt that it would be putting them out to include those two in the list.
Right on time for Crisis Coar. I hope they have something Tactics-related though.
(still doesn't know why he spells it like that)
They would have to hijack the entire square-enix domain in order to pull off the hack that the dreamcast one had. No I believe its real. I've already gone through the Japanese registration before for their members site and its pretty much the same.
I think the system may be linked with the JP one because the ID I wanted still wasn't available.
registering now
OK smartasses. Who took Spoony Bard? Not cool...
blah blah blah members coming blah blah blah
Poorly worded.
They keep sending me e-mail registration confirmations even though I completed th process.
