Activision have announced that they'll be re-releasing the 360 version of Call of Duty 4. The upcoming "Game of the Year" edition will include the full game, new box art (to show of all their shiny "best of..." awards) and - strangely - a token for Xbox Live that will let users download the new map pack, which is due in April. Why not just include the maps on the disc? Eh, whatever. This "Game of the Year" edition will be out in April.

Hi guys
lets milk the game for all its worth
These re-releases they are always doing now, reminds me of DVDs and the many re-release versions that follow after.
Not the best of trends. But easily ignored.
I can't imagine anyone who already has the game will buy this. Also, they should probably drop the price if they're coming out with these "Game of the Year" editions...
And where's the PS3 love? (I know I'm enticing the 360 fanboys)
>Why not just include the maps on the disc?
Haven't we gone over this issue before...?
I think I'll wait to get the re-release of this re-release.
I predict, like Halo 3, that unless the title maintains "attention" with increased "DLC" (aka playable Maps) and more often, the title will fall once GTA IV, Rainbow 6v2, MGS4, and a few others are release within the next dozen weeks.
I am seeing a pattern where games that are a hit are released, and then after 30-60days of playing, it peaks unless the game writers provide something to sustain it.
(Whether that is add-ons, maps, new features...)
I hope that the people who bought the normal version of the game will get the maps for free, if not I will get extremely mad.
My original comment didn't appear so:
I hope that the people who bought the normal version of the game will get the maps for free, if not I will get extremely mad.
@2SBs: Not everyone can be Valve.
I always disliked changes made to the original versions of games, for example, platinum editions.
@Setzer IIDX: Yeah Valve rocks! I knocked my Xbox over while playing the OJ box and the sent me a free replacement, even though I was totally at fault for messing my disk up.
OMG what is wrong with the server today my comment didn't post second time in a row.
I think the token is for the used market. If they trade in the game it will not include free maps. And any one who cries about having to pay for the new maps.....freakin get over it , it's the best selling most played funnest game in a long time! They deserve more funds to pump into COD5:future weapons! lol
That game deserves to whore itself out with as many GOTY emblems as it can. Thanks for making me wrongfully ignore Mario Galaxy, DMC4 and No More Heroes, Infinity Ward!
@njhardcoreguy: This obviously isn't being designed for people who already own the game.
I've been meaning to pick up a copy of COD4, but for whatever reason haven't yet. This is the perfect incentive for me to finally do so.
Is there even anyone playing the PS3 version? lol, i'm sure they are....
New maps in April? Hmmm... That gives me a few weeks of tearing it up in Vegas 2 and then back to COD4 to play new maps up until GTAIV. It's going to be crazy. Especially since I still have Condemned 2, Frontlines & Bully begging to get played.
Ahh token for DLC. This is so if you buy the GoTY edition game used you still have to buy the maps because the code has already been used. This way IW still gets money.
@Collapse The Control: What does the PS3 have to do with this?
@Collapse The Control: Did Sony run over your dog or something in the past?
Activision milking another franchise *gasp*
Will PC players get the maps for free as there is not set method of selling content to the pc users? The PC game already has a bunch of custom maps being played but are we getting actual retail map support?
@Kyle81: My dog...
@jun581: Yes.
IW knows the numbers of how many 360 versions got sold over PS3?
I would hypothesize that they would probably be able to reuse the existing version of the game, and thus, not have to go through a new approval/certification process with Microsoft for a version with the maps included on the DVD.
Or, the pessimist will say that the disc is already full and the maps won't fit.
Or, the cynicist would say that Microsoft forbids them from including the maps on the disc so that 360 owners that want them would need to get the hard drive/memory unit to store the data.
@Collapse The Control:
Regardless of the fact that IW may or may not be able to tell which console had more sales, they both broke over 1 million. That alone makes it GOTY worthy for both consoles, especially with one having the lower install base atm. Logic- "Alot more fun than fanboyism"
wait 800 pts for the map packs?
@muu: Beats me, but I'm guessing:
1. They aren't on the disc so the maps can be tied to the account.
2. They are already getting ready to master the discs and the maps haven't gone through XBL QA yet.
3. There isn't enough room for the new maps on the disc.
4. Some combination of 1,2 and 3.
5. Something else that I haven't thought of.
Even if the maps WERE on the disc, it would most likely have to be treated like downloaded content, which would probably still require a token, so why not have the customers download them anyway?
@2SBs: If the downloads are requiring a code, I'd bet you that the downloads will not be free. Why else would you need the code?
@mikeloxlong:
Yeah it's a ripoff. Cod 2 map packs are still $10 too.
They probably arent on the disc because of space. Although honestly, with xbl id rather download it because it is tied to your account. I like the feeling of security.
@Jechticknight: True.
Having more competition (more gamers) on said platform is great as well.
@sudz: Correction: Let's Milk all those X-Boxers for all their worth.
PC Gamers... get it for free.
@mikeloxlong:
They haven't announced a price yet but 800 points is likely. IW's community manager hinted on his blog that they may even end up being free. I'd be happy even if they released them at 400 points. I don't like the trend of decreasing the number of maps in these packs and then raising the price on them.
@EnigmaNemesis:
Not really. There's no extra stuff on the disc, you're just getting the extra maps included. Would you really have wanted to wait 5 months to get COD4 just to get the new maps for free? In fact, seeing as you could have gotten COD4 for $40 at one store or another at any given point since November this release (if they charge $60 for it) will actually cost you more overall.
@SigmundTheSeaMonster:
Agreed on earlier comment. I keep coming back to Halo 3 just to check out the new stuff (New Maps, Grifball, Rocket Racing, Team Hardcore, etc). Even then, once GTAIV is out, they'll have to do something big to pry my attention away.
@Collapse The Control: Was that a Jeff Bell summoning?
Yay, the maps will be out in April!!
To compete with GTA's 16 multiplayer modes and RB6v2 multiplayer onslaught
You know, I can't wait till the rumor starts of a co-op patch for cod4
@okenny :): Jeff Bell was the only guy who tried to save my dog...
@NateN: No silly!! It's so you can be exposed to the opportunity to impulse buy. The same reasons why stores put items on sale when they are clearly loosing money.
@2SBs: Its always like that. Well more reciently that normal, due to the tech gnomes being hard at work fixing and breaking things. ;D More fixing though.
Son of a bitch! I just ordered the game no more than two days ago! Gimme my mapz!11!
@SigmundTheSeaMonster: I believe COd4 has been #1 on XBL for 5 weeks running now.
@2SBs:
Why? It's the premium people pay for getting things upon release. It's like when someone bought a DVD player when it first came out for $500+, then a year later the prices dropped significantly.
I just read over at CVG that the pack of four maps will be 800 points:
[www.computerandvideogames.com]
fourzerotwo.com doesn't mention a price though.
If the pack came out a month ago I probably would've considered it, but in between Vegas 2 and GTAIV? Not gonna happen at 800 points. I'll download the Halo 3 Heroic Pack since it'll be free and mess around with that if I want a change from Vegas 2.
Game is getting tired after a 5 month diet strictly composed of COD4 MP. I needs some new maps.
The faithful purchasers get slapped by an awesome developer. Not that I really care. Anyone who hasn't bought the game yet is missing out on some awesome multi-player game play and a thrilling (albeit short) single player campaign. Outside of Earthbound, this is my favorite game of all time.
So we have to pay $60 ($70 for me for the special edition), then most likely another $20 for maps? While people who didn't support launch get to spend $60 flat for new art, game, and the maps? I think I might just stop playing video games. First Lost Planet now this? It will end up being just like DVD re-re-re-re-re-releases, with their counter-spawned special editions and criterion collections. It's hard enough to afford these games as it is. I for one will boycott buying the new maps and probably end up selling my copy of CoD.
P.S. - To those who were talking about valve, the TF2 maps might not be free either. Microsoft has say in price.
Stupid. Even EA doesn't milk its franchises this badly.
Maybe they include the token because it can't fit on a DVD :*
Sorry, had to do it!
No, seriously, as for PS3... yes, there are plenty of players, and yes, it is one of the greatest games ever. My friends and I all own it (except for one, and we will soon force him to purchase it) and our wives/girlfriends hate it when we get together because all we talk about is COD4... create-a-class setups, funny kills, etc.
It's really... sad, actually.
If the DLC ISN'T free for people who already own COD4, how will Activision or Infinity Ward or whoever is taking care of it going to accommodate those people who don't want to buy it? Will there be a DLC hopper like in Halo or are they going to just integrate it and pair people with maps together like in the ranked Halo hoppers? Just curious!
Also, with the DLC is there any chance for new achievements, new challenges or (and I doubt this but I REALLY WANT IT) split-screen coop OR split-screen online play?
@beckerist:
I ran into this problem with Resistance: Fall of Man... I bought the map pack, and was one of the very few among a very small online community that did... thus, it was a waste of money.
Personally, while I'll probably buy the maps anyways when they hit the PSN, I won't count on playing them much... but... that's ok because this game is just so sweet-ass-sweet.
@beckerist:
Oh, as for your "requests", I'd really like to see some more challenges. I've gotten Boot Camp, Operations, Killer, and a handful of Elite challenges done after 1 day 22 hours of play time, and have found them VERY entertaining. I'm sure it pisses off my teammates when I was working like hell for the "Misery Loves Company" challenge and kept blowing myself up.
@beckerist:
This is exactly why I don't buy premium maps, no matter what they do you're still splitting the player base up between the have's and have not's. It's nice when they make it easy to not want them by charging too much for too little.
I'm really curious to see how they handle the maps for the PC release. No one charges for maps on PC.
I mean, we're at the point where PC players could miss out on maps because they're charging for them on 360 (COD4) and console players are missing out on maps because they are *free* on the PC (Team Fortress 2). How insane is that?
We always hear the propaganda that it costs money to develop these maps so they have to charge for them, yet smaller studios like Epic and Valve have no problem with supplying more content for free than Bungie or IW will make at a premium. Something doesn't add up.
@muu: Don't be stupid. it's lazy, not due to "constrained disc space".
I am 100% sure its the same disc we've seen for the past couple months, but with "GOTY" on the package.
@whiptcracker: That's a hell of a prediction skill you and Sigmond have, you mean new popular games will take the place of older popular games? Never heard that before.
