Today's piece of inane trivia is brought to you by Warhawk, the little online game that could. Turns out that over the past week or so the game registered it's 500,000th ranked player (it's at 510,927 at time of writing). That's not the number of people who've bought and/or played the game, just those who played a game on a ranked server. When you consider the profile of the game and the install base of the PS3 (especially at the time it was released), those are some impressive numbers.

I used to LOVE Warhawk until they screwed it all up with their patches, and reseting all my scores, badges, medals, etc. that never came back. This game just pisses me off when I play it now. And the expansion pack was a waste of money I think.
Hey I'm on of those people :)
I got Warhawk near the beginning of March.
(I got a PS3 in February)
I feel special.
Half a million online players for an online only game. Impressive is not the word I would use.
Got my used copy last week. Great stuff. Expected more from DLC though.
I haven't been able to play my PS3 in like months. My 7 year old has taken it over with Burnout and Pain. By god though I will get it back and play Warhawk.... someday :(
@xvitium: Half a million for a console online only game is what i would call pretty damn impressive. Keep in mind warhawk isn't halo or anything but 500k is pretty decent sales.
Anyways if you wanna play against me on warhawk my psn is Another17. I'm not terribly good i'm ok but i play alot :p.
@PSN ID: Kadaj24:
They restarted it because ranking system was not working, so you got your worthless ranks with no time, stop moaning.
Imagine the numbers if it had single player mode...
@Snappywave: Imagine if they could actually measure that...
@Snappywave: the extra players wouldn't make up for the cost of producing a worthwhile campaign mode.
Those are pretty impressive numbers. Glad to see the game doing so well!
Just next time I do wish the devs release a SP portion of the Warhawk franchise too. D:
I heard alot of great reviews about this game, would people here still recommend this game even if I hate first person shooters and not really crazy about third person shooters?
If so is it too late for a newbie to catch up to all the experienced players already?
Thank you in advance for whoever responds =)
@Dir_en_grey: you can spend the whole time in a warhawk if you like. definitely the most fun way to play IMHO. also the ranked servers ensure you won't get your arse handed to you.
@Dir_en_grey: I would definitely recommend this game even if you are not into shooters. I see this title as more of a real-time strategy shooter rather than an actual shooting game. It is more concerned with which base to defend, to capture, and such rather than which part of enemy to shoot, where to hide, etc.
The learning curve is quite steep though, so be prepared to lose a bunch of your free time. But once you get into it, its worth it.
@Dir_en_grey: The game is pretty damn fun. I bought it the first day it came out way back in like September and the fact that it is still garnering my attention 6 months later is a testament to how good it is. And I usually get bored with a game pretty quickly.
Warhawk is fun to play as hell. I love this game, I can say that this is one game that I play on a regular basis. Sure you had cheaters on there, but at least they are cracking down on it. It's great when you play with people who knows what they are doing. I'm not a stat freak who just wantS to rank up...I play just for fun so I mostly play ctf. I find that there's a variety of things you can do in warhawk so it hasn't got old yet, and they update it with new stuff. Stuff that aren't just to steal money from you like EA, the extra stuff are actually worth the update.
This game is absolutely the best shooter on the console market so far this generation. Variety of gameplay + strategy + solid mechanics + gigantic maps + epic war-like feel + great graphics = one hell of a game.
That, and the Kotaku Clan. Come on guys, get on once in a while. I'm still there.
Just got this game this week very awesome and underated game people need to check it out!
@Dir_en_grey: I hate fps also, this is third person which is the way I like it...I think you will like it, you can fly, drive tanks, jeep, use turrets, plant mines....there's quite more things to do besides fire a gun.
i really dig warhawk. liked when i did the beta test, (i think i can talk about it now) to now. the DLC was cool. i will concede that the new map i almost too huge for it's own good, but i still like playing it with a full 32 player game.
for an online game. the nubmers are impressive. yeah, i can see how someone that has "halo glasses" could say that the number isn't good, but halo is a freakshow. no game should be put against that. halo is alot simpler to play than warhawk. alot.
hopefully, the new DLC will be cool, and it can't not be. it's free. the new paint jobs are nice touch. hope they pick mine. i say more should get the game. it was the first great game that came out for the PS3. well, that and resistance.
@PSN ID: Kadaj24: I guess you were one of the cheaters that got your stat wiped out. I couldn't care less what happens to everyone stats. It was messed up at the beginning, they should have wiped EVERYONE off when they got it fixed.
I couldn't even play warhawk without massive connection problems and constant disconnects. I always figured it was something on my end that Warhawk just didn't work with but after updating to 2.17 I haven't had a single disconnect while playing. I guess it wasn't such a useless patch afterall
Is it possible to drive vehicles forward by moving the thumbstick up/forward? I've only tried this game a little on a friend's console and it kind of annoyed me to have to hold a button to drive..
That's 500,000 people definitely playing their PS3s.
Online that is.
Having 1 million players online on release day is amazing, this is just slightly interesting.
COD4 has that many people playing it everyday.
@Harteex: Well you have to press the gas pedal to drive, the same thing here. Actually if you play a while, the control makes pretty good sense.
@PSN ID: Kadaj24: You lose your ranks and badges because you didn't actually earn them.@
Collapse The Control: Warhawk also had about 1/10th the marketing and hype as COD4
@Collapse The Control:
Cod4 is AAA title with a solid sp and mp.Comparing warhawk and COD4 is pretty disingenious.I'd say this is impressive for the game.I play it sometime, but it's not pick up and play imho.In other words,I fly the warhawks pretty bad.
Love this game. Too bad it takes so long to rank up... which of course lead to a bunch of servers where players cheat and take turns capturing eachother's flags. Why can't we all just play fair?
@enewtabie: Warhawk didn't even get a tv commercial :( Game got almost no marketing coverage at all by Sony.
@njhardcoreguy: Don't play CTF if thats what your talking about. CTF is where most of the "hardcore" go to rank up by abusing the flag captures. Zones is more balanced mode thats alot more fun and not full of idiots.
@Kyle81: Yeah, Zones is my preferred mode.
What they need to do is make deathmatch kills more valuable (like how COD4 awards 10 xp for a deathmatch kill but only 5 xp for a tactical game kill). Everyone plays CTF because if you score with the flag you get ~25 points... getting 25 kills it usually a feat in Deathmatch.
Anyone agree?
@njhardcoreguy: Well the main thing people like about CTF is they can stall the games to last longer and getting more points. Also just picking up the flag scores you a bunch of points even if you didn't score. So people just run around grabbing the flag but not capturing it as all they want are points.
It seems that no matter what the game is or what platform it is on, if it has Ranks with leveling up there will be people trying to cheat their way higher.
Yeah, Sony definitely should have gave Warhawk more advertising love. I think the closest I've seen is the "Ladies and Gentlemen" commercials, where they have a Warhawk flying with a SIXAXIS, and half a second of video of a Warhawk flying through an explosion.
They needed to give it more play. A commercial like Uncharted got (though it should have got more airtime too.) You can't expect a console with a low install base to be moved by a game, no matter how good, without some exposer.
@PSN ID: Kadaj24: Dude you realize the ranking system was totally broken before the patches. People were getting Command Marshal and General rankings with only a few thousand points and no skill. It was total bullshit and had to be fixed.
Anyways, I think the numbers are good. I believe some of you mentioned this before but it didn't have a huge marketing campaign and it released before the PS3 got its big push. I think Warhawk is the best game on PS3 in 07. I still play it to this day, starting in September 07. Personally I like the Omega Dawn level and the Dropship. Omega Dawn is definitely a 32 player level or a 24 player level if you want infinite options for strategy and a well thought out game.
@PapaBear434: I know I'm not in the clan anymore but I'm still playing and just logged in at least 10 hours over the weekend.
@enewtabie: Dude try playing the DogFight servers. When I first got the game that's how I learned to fly. That and find a consistent way to dodge missiles without using counter-measures. I played Dogfight on Saturday and had a guy chasing me. He launched at least 15 missiles at me and I was able to dodge every one of them. He must have been pissed because he chased me for a couple minutes after that. Good times my friend, good times. Add me and let me know when you're on.
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.:
Just add me..I hoping to do a review on it for my blog, but I got a few games to get to first.Burnout Paradise,Army of Two,Uncharted..I'm beggin for a copy of Fallout 3..hehe
Wow that's alot. OF the half-million, only about 3 can read the actual base numbers -even fewer know how to play zones. The expansion was pointless as not enough people bought it to make it worthwhile.
awesome to see people still playing this game.. i loved it when i played it.. maybe its time to start up again :)
@enewtabie: what's your PSN handle?
I feel that the expansion pack should be free, it's the only way everyone who bought the game can enjoy. I prefere the old maps myself. I think ctf is a good game to play because it's not mindless like deathmatch but requires less teamwork than zone. Lets face it, not everyone has a good team and comunicate with the mic. I'm in some clan that I don't even see people playing. I'm too lazy to be in a clan anyway. So that's why I like ctf. I don't play it to rack up points...as you can probably check my scores on warhawk site.
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.:
enewtabie
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: Hey man, if you got some pointers on dodging missles let me know. I've gotten pretty good with everything exceept dodging missles. I'm no good without chaf.
@enewtabie: cool, adding it now
@nxp3: yeah, It was the same for me until I teamed up with some guys...real hotheads, in a game of Dogfight and the maneuvers they were pulling off were sick. Some people dodge differently depending on which control scheme you use but I use Pro-Flight, dual analog controls suit my style of play better than motion but surprisingly, motion controls are pretty damn good too.
Anyways... when your warning alarm goes off when someone is locked on to you push both analog sticks in a the same direction left and right left and right or vice versa sort of like a snaking pattern. Be sure to move up and down too while you're going from side to side. It looks kinda crazy when you first do it but that pattern can be combined with other maneuvers. I like to barrel roll while doing that pattern or climb and then dive depending on the situation. There's a video on youtube that illustrates it pretty good.
+ Watch video
The guys I were playing with used different control schemes and one guy in particular was really good at boosting and barrel rolling to dodge missiles. Still can't figure out how he does that. I get smoked when I try his method. If you want to practice it just add me and let me know when you're online and which server you're on.
warhawk was the reason I bought my ps3. Played it at a friends house and had to get my own!
theres just so much to do in this game. i still play it a lot. from the cramped quarters of small on foot skirmishes to huge epic battles with everythign going on around you.
My PSN is gl1tch3d if anybody wants to add me.
The patches have made the game better. I will gladly pay for any expansion pack for this game. I dont miss the single player because that probably would have given me 8 hours and i would have forgotten aobut it, where i have prolly 100 hours of playing multiplayer.
500k isnt sales, its people who have played on a ranked server.
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: Wow, that guy in the video is really good at dodging. I'm going to have to try it out. I did use proflight for a while but switched back, I guess I'll have to learn it. Another useful thing I see some are doing is being able to ram vehicle with the warhawk or lifting it. Great for knocking them into the water. My PSN is nxp3. I'll add you when I get home. Do you play on a particular server all the time....cause I don't.
Warhawk is a blast it's probably the first game that got me hook into an online game.I enjoy capture the flag the most especially if your team all has a mic and communicate well. Telling a couple Warhawks to fly over the flag base and drop bombs and Electrical Charge Rockets to clear it of mines and troops then sending 2 tanks to clean up and 2 jeeps to capture the flag is priceless.
You can play strategically or just go around killing. There are a lot of ways to play the game. Some people just love to fly the Warhawk or drive the tanks around and cause destruction. It is very versatile.
If you're expecting a COD4 or Halo type of experience then this game is not for you. A couple of my friends just recently bought Warhawk because I talk about it a lot but when they played it they said it sucks because the graphic is not as good as they expect and they can't shoot for shit because they're FPS type of guys but the real reason they hated it is because they suck at the game. They both returned it before giving it a chance. Sucks for them.
