On the fence about which version of Sega Superstars Tennis to grab? Then you'll "love" this trailer. Get it? Tennis! Not sure if I'm frothing for essentially another go at Virtua Tennis, but maybe I'm just bitter about Shadow and Pudding taking up valuable slots in the roster. At least they got Gilius Thunderhead and Alex Kidd in there. My inner Sega fan is being torn apart by the struggle...

My god! This does look quite awesome! :o
Actually, this looks a lot more appealing than I originally thought.
Where are the Virtua Fighter characters.....
=O!
This game kinda surprised me, it sounded dumb at first but now I can't wait to pick it up.
I want to love this game.. But Sega has disappointed me for probably the past 2 console generations. Their Dreamcast games were the last ones to be memorable IMO in a general perspective view.
On the other hand, Virtua Tennis has stayed a solid title, so hopefully this game shares some of the gameplay from it.
the DS version looks terrible...
also, is it being sold full price for wii/ps2 and cheap on psn/xbl?
I might have to buy the 360 version of this!
Although I must say that there is too many sonic characters after having looked at the main HP of the game... D:

When is sega going back to making innovative games?
Is it me or does the frame rate look might wicked in this game?
I was under the impression that this game was going to be your average horrific Sega abomination. Now I'm genuinely interested, and I'm not really one for sports or Mario sports style games.
@hass: uh, nvm, i just misinterpreted the trailer.
This could be a good game. On the PS3.
The last tennis game I actually liked was Super Tennis for the SNES. I loved that game.
I feel as though I may throw up. That was some seriously stinky shit.
MUST BUY!
@snakepliskin:
I think you missed, The Club, Valkrie in the Battlefield, and a few others.
I don't understand, Sega is making good games and you people still whine. Sega didn't just make 'OMG INNOVATIVE' games. BTW you can't use that word, its owned by Nintendo.
This title is running on a modified version of the VT engine.
@fruitsofherwomb: I'm sure by "modified" you mean "Completely FUBAR".
Ah, see! Now that sentence of yours makes more sense.
@hass:
The bit with robotnik looks ugly cause its replicating space harrier, only with tennis, and therefore looks outrageously sweet.
The bit with actual tennis didnt look ugly at all. I may, depending on whether that space harrier bit is included on the home console versions, be forced to buy both console and ds versions....
well, i generally dont like tennis games, but this has JSR characters in it, and I LOVE JSR, soooo, now the question is wii or ps3? i think hi-def-ier Beat will be sweet...but maybe waggle Beat will kick ass too... damn tough.
Jesus, the PS2 version looks like a freaking original Playstation game.
@Redface
Have you ever played VT? This is basically VT with Sega characters.
Sega hit its peak, creatively, from 2000 to around 2004, when the DC was rocking the house, and they spun off their dev teams and told them to do whatever the hell they wanted. That all-too-brief era spawned games like Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5, Rez, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Super Monkey Ball...hell, most of the newer games represented in SST.
Yup. This game over R6V2 this week.
@ratix240sx: This looks like a cheap attempt to make a quick buck. This looks like it'll never be as fun or as nuanced as VT.
This looks pretty sweet. I may pick this up.
dude id love to see a new alex kidd.. im actually kind of excited about this game now that i hear hes in it...
@Redface
I've seen sega's cheap attempt's to make a quick buck *cough* Virtua Quest/Seven Samurai 20xx/Amazing Island/The Golden Compass/Alterd Beast PS2 *cough* and this looks like they actually took some care to make it.
I wanna play as Ethan Thomas!
I am disappointed that the Wii version doesn't look better than that. I think it would be a lot more fun to play with family and friends, but I can't deny the 360 version looks amazing in comparison. I imagine it would probably be easier to find people to play online in the 360 version also. Like I said, it makes me sad.
Was it just me, or was there a House of the Dead stage in the game? I hope it's on the Wii version as well. I mean, it's reported of being screwed out of online multiplay in that version, but it's what I got given how the PS3 still isn't in my price range, and I'm still waiting on Microsoft to put out a reliable hardware makeup of the 360 before getting one. Of course, may never happen, but here's to the hopes of one day being able to play Dead Rising.
Sega is sitting on so many goldmines it isn't even funny. They need to bring back some of the old team to bring them back into the game, make some money and reissue the Dreamcast :)
I'd call it a game...but I wouldn't call that tennis. I'd prefer it to me more like tennis than not. I hope at least one mode resembles tennis.
@ Aresef:
Umm, no dreamcast in 2004. Ill help you out. 1999 to late 2001 and the rest was history.
Ugh, it's disgusting how much I care about this game. I hate tennis, I hate "party games" and I hate the new Sonic game, but somehow seeing this trailer fills me with a mixture of irresistible lust and crushing self-loathing.
I just know that on launch day I'll walk into EB, see this game on the shelf, and suddenly everything will go grey and staticky like the Ring. As blood runs from my nose and ears I'll look up and see the Sega Superstars Tennis box growing to consume my whole field of view, before I pass into unconsciousness.
When I wake up, I'll be lying on the floor of a trashed hotel room with half a dozen consoles playing every format of SST on a stack of screen-rolling CRTs...
My inner Sega fan is too hurt to care after the "Sega wants to know if you still own a Dreamcast!" debacle.
Thanks, Kotaku. ;_;
this is online for both ps3 and 360 atleast, right?
I might want it... VERY tempted after seeing the HOtD mini game and the JSR one... More JSR please?
@eviladrian: wow, you're quite the creative one aren't you
this game will blow like all other tennis games featuring maskcost characters... Get Hot Shot Golf or something...
Alex Kidd!!! My first video game!
@snakepliskin: Ever Play Yakuza?
Condemned?
The Club?
Medieval II?
Crush?
Universe at War?
Didn't think so.
@Aresef:
2004 was Sega's worst year as 3rd party. This year alone is better with Valkrie in the Battlefield and Yakuza Kenzan! Not to mention Viking Battle for Asgard looks awesome.
Pwnmaster, Virtua Tennis is superior to hot shit golf, not thanks.
The PS3 and 360 are both online.
@TheCleaningGuy: On topic, this actually looks like a fun game!
If I wasn't picking up the MGS collection, I'd be all over this.
@fruitsofherwomb: sweet, i hope enough people pick it up to actually enjoy the online.
Crap, I didn't want this at all until the trailer ... I'll probably get the 360 version. I loved seeing Space Harrier in the DS version, though.
space harrier tennis!! that is fucking sweet!. ok this shit has my vote!
I'm saddened that it's not going onto PSP. It'd make a great PSP game...but then again, the PSP does have the VT games.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: OK, I'm new here and I'm not sure how you denote irony so I'll take that as a compliment.
I'm serious though, everything about the underlying game of Mario Party meets Tennis is repugnant to me, but the thick outer coating of Sega heritage... it's like knowing that my childhood teddy bear is full of killer bees but I can't stop going in for a hug.
I was surprised to see Jet Grind Radio characters in this--pretty awesome! They really could have blown me away if they had added the default hunter from Phantasy Star online (the chap wit the yellow suit and beam saber you always see on the covers) and a camea from Valkyrie of the Battlefield would have been awesome and a cool way to get people intrigued, but alass.
@Afore Notation: Ah, and a Shinmue cameo would have been great as well, though I have no idea what his power would be, besides maybe inspiring that dude Sisqo to put athletic tape under his eye.
Where the hell is Axel from Streets of Rage? Why does that series get no love from Sega?
Regardless, I'm still getting this game...
So did they make a tennis game and put completely different chrs and stages in each version of the game? If thats the case then i say F* it, as that trailer was awesome, and would want to play ALL those variations (virtua cop? Space Harrier? Holy Boshingo!) If not, then stuff it...
What kind of tennis game has "mild blood?"
@Teh Emo Penguin:
The good ones
@Teh Emo Penguin: did you see the "Tennis of the Dead" mini-game? Much <3 for tennis + zombies.
nxp3-
The game's main mode is regular tennis,albeit it with some special "super shots" or whatnot. The House of the Dead or Space Harrier stuff is just icing.
@Witzbold: That's like saying there's too many Mario characters in Super Smash Bros., don'tcha think? I mean, Sonic is Sega's mascot; of course his series will have the most characters.
I'm in just for the Space Harrier mode they showed in the DS shot.
is this stuff really platform-specific? if so, that bites the big one. if this means that i am stuck with green hill zone on 360 and can't play in tokyoto, i'm out. i hope they were just showcasing different levels for each system because they don't want to repeat stuff.
No PSP = No sale.
I gotta say, that's a fantastic trailer. It definitely beats those "let's watch the players' expressions" kind of promo clips. I hate those.
@bugashi:
This is my sentiment exactly. I won't ever be able to afford a PS3 (any version since there's like 6 now) and I'm afraid to buy an Xbox360 because I'm still scared to death of the RRoD.
@VergessenHeld: I dont think anyone gives a shit about Shadow, not to mention most folks hate Tails due to the wonderful trauma that was brought on in game when he first appeared.
Where's the REZ thing? where's Akira?
