How'd You Find Kotaku?

ALL YOU BASTARDS EVER DO IS TAKE, TAKE, TAKE. Now, it's our turn. We're introducing a new semi-regular feature here on Kotaku called "Tell Us Dammit." How it works: We ask a question, you answer it. Simple and no strings attached! This isn't some marketing survey or whatever. It's an emotional investment in you. Yes, we're interesting in knowing you, Kotaku reader person. You probably know fucktons about us — more than you even want to, we're sure. But, hey, we'd like to know about you. That way you won't be some faceless blob — and we might feel a tinge of guilt when we ban your ass. Or not, because really we're incapable of human emotion. Whichever!

Question: How'd you find Kotaku?

Me? At one time, I was a Kotaku reader. Found the site through Gizmodo. Like, back in 2004 or early 2005. You know, when the site was pretty much just Crecente. Good times!

  • Kotaku found me.

  • going to the art institute... a friend recommended it.

  • i think someone on the Gametrailers forums put a link up to one of your articles last year and I found the site. I didn't come back until I found another link to your site later that week.

I realized that you guys are the shit and I've been coming back ever since :-)

I found it back around the middle of '06 thanks to Deadeyereborn.

  • For me, it was when the Wii Remote was first revealed. I was completely intrigued by the concept and did a web search. Kotaku was one of the first results. I started looking around the site and liked the style. Hooked ever since.

  • Ummmmmm... I think I was linked to it through some random videogame blog back when I was following E3 2006.

I stuck around because it was awesome. Bashcraft, Mrs. Bash, and mini-bash should be proud of what this place has become :)

  • Penny Arcade. Constant linking and referencing, and I trust those guys, and those guys trust you, therefore vicariously I trust you.

  • People on the PS3 Gamefaqs Message Board always linked info to here. I enjoyed the writing so much, I started checking this site first. Now I'm addicted to Kotaku like cocaine, hitting F8 every time I get a chance.
    >_>

  • just put a survey banner,we can take it...

    *rolls eyes*
    anyway:
I found kotaku through a link, that was in some forums, that had a Kotaku article, with de link!!

  • Through a story featured on...joystiq. Yeah. Friend hipped me to it, wasn't really my bag, but found a story they referenced you on and I've been here ever since...I love you, man.

So March Madness, huh? Yeah! SPORTS!

  • I found out when a few of my dev buddies constantly viewed it back in school. It wasn't until my first job that I started reading everyday.

  • I can't really remember how I found it. I think it was a link off of a link off of a link somewhere.

It was right around the time that the post about the RE4 game and watch mock up was posted.

    Yeah... that rocked. ^_^

  • I kept hearing Cheapy bang on about the site during the CAGcast so figured I should check it out.

  • During the E3 '06 press conferences, someone on another forum (CheapAssGamer, maybe) linked here saying they had realtime updates.

  • Found it thanks to all the links from the site formerly known as thelastboss.com. I kept noticing that other sites were also linking or talking about your site so I started coming.

  • Found it through Apache's site, voodooextreme.

I shunned current gen for awhile and was pc exclusive. Kind of ironic that I would end up getting 2/3 current gen console which started from a pc game website.

  • When I found this site, it was right after I stopped using qj because of all there crappy adds. Kotaku is a mecca for me compared to qj...

  • Edge credited the site in a news item sometime in 2006. Started scanning articles, realised it was just what I wanted from a gaming news site, and been reading daily ever since. While wowing my less wise friends with my unbelievable cutting edge-ness.

  • Investment in people. Made me think of David Brent from the Office...
Boringly enough, I found the site through Gizmodo as well.

  • I find it to be a very rewarding experience! ;-) ..... Was shown it by a mate.. since then it's been nothing but love.. I check almost every 10 minutes! Waiting for all the lovely news to unfold

  • I had been an avid Deadspin and The Consumerist reader for about a year. I looked at the links of other Gawker Media blogs, found Kotaku and have been coming back daily ever since.

  • At church the priest was like "lol kotaku has this awesome article up" and he brought it up on the Plasma screen... and there was tubgirl right on the homepage.

  • When GT had a Bonus Round interview with Kotaku, Destructoid and Joystiq, I decided to bookmark all three.

  • One day I noticed Penny Arcade name dropping some funny named site. That's pretty much all it took! I am easily manipulated. Now if you'll excuse me, I see something shiny.

  • Honestly, I kept hearing this site getting bashed in forums so I decided to see what all the hate was about. I couldn't figure it out though. I liked the style and the fact that it is updated at least once every few hours...

  • Listening to the 1up podcasts, I heard this site mentioned now and then, and then I made a thread there on the 1UP boards (username - duhbeyuh) asking about other good places to hit up for game related news, and again this site was recommended.

    So that's my story.

  • I found out about Kotaku from Epileptic Gaming, an edgy video game talk show.

Penny Arcade. I remember a news post (early 2007 or late 2006) where Tycho mentioned Kotaku as a place of "hardened men and women, most of whom lost good friends in the Console Wars of the 90s" or something like that (I'm paraphrasing, I'm sure somebody will post the link here shortly). I was highly intrigued, and I find his description apt. We have a few youngsters here, the more intelligent of which have not found the hammer's wrath, but for if I had to guess I'd put the average age of Kotaku readers in the mid 20s if not a hair higher. Not to say we're a bunch of old farts just yet, but most of us were Sega, Nintendo, Sony, SNK, PC, etc players way back into the early 90s if not further, and have at least some appreciation for just how far games have come.

I love this place, don't know what I used to do without out it. Well I do know, but I prefer not to think about it ;)

  • Through some collegues at work in the qa loc trenches...

  • Argh...I mean F5.

  • I heard those penis wrinkles at Joystiq talking about how awful it is and had to see it for myself!

  • I didn't really read video game blogs that much until I stumbled onto gaygamer.net. I noticed they had linked from you guys before but it wasn't until Flynn pointed out that he worked here (back when the site got hacked) that I came over here. The general lack of dickery I found over here and the support for the gg site made me stick around :)

  • If you like games how can you not find Kotaku? Most video game searches on Google bring you here.

I did have the unfortunate pleasure of mispronouncing the name of the site for a while till a friend corrected me. I was saying it cot-a-cew... oops :)

  • I guess someone on a forum I regular linked here as a source for a news post, and... I've been coming ever since! : )

  • One of the guys at work spends every morning filling our inboxes with tidbits of info from Kotaku.

  • Penny Arcade's Downloadable Content.

You could never pay me enough to write for this site; you folks must be crazy and have caffine drips. :S

  • Stumbled across the name in an article, checked it out, and it's all downhill from there.

  • A buddy linked me to an article here.

  • Penny Arcade for me as well. They've mentioned you guys a few times, so last year I thought I'd check it out. I'm sure my boss is pissed about that little decision, but I'm sure glad I found a great timesink!

  • was checking digg.com gaming stories and the website kotaku kept popping up again and again.

like most times, i resisted, because anything popular is obviously evil, but after i while i decided to check it out.

found interesting and casual writing but with a passion to detail and video games that matched my personality perfectly. now, i just need to get a job here (since i'm already writing about video games in my day job...).

  • Found it through a Digg post about 6 or so months ago. There were a couple news items or feature stories that on Digg that all linked to this site. I noticed how fast gaming stories appeared here, and that we got the odd/cool stuff here also and so I immediately put it in my bookmarks.

  • I know how I found Kotaku... through the Guardian Games Blog. What I can't remember is how I found the Guardian Games Blog :(

  • I literally searched for gaming blogs one day. I was tired of gamespot and IGN and I knew there had to be something more focused than even Arstechnica's gaming forum. So Google lead me here among other sites. After about a year, the others have fallen away except Kotaku and Joystiq. I lurked long before I "auditioned." This is the only one I post on though. I love everything except Luke's fat jokes and hearing about Bashcraft's family life.

  • I think it was a combination of Penny Arcade and my brother (here's a secret: he's Doomstalk). I think it was a couple of months until I got a commenter account though.

  • I don't really remember, but it must've been through credit for an article in a forum.
I'm glad I clicked on the link.

"The GameFAQS boards are simply a must for that ability to see a fandom in its primordial state. The fan culture one finds on, say, a Kotaku is much more entrenched. It's sardonic. These are hard men and women who lost friends in the second console war. On GameFAQS things are much more unicellular, which makes it an optimal environment for study."

    -Penny Arcade

  • Links from other sites back in 2005. Damned if I remember what was the story exactly but I think it was a link from RPGintelligenceagency or whatever it was called (a now defunct site made by Adrew Vestal of the original unofficial square page before it became rpgfan).

  • Noliferuin was talking about Kotaku and I checked it out, ended up reading it whenever I can

  • ...this is Kotaku?!

Aw man, have I been misled all these years.

No, no. Just browsing, really. You're bound to bump into something related to Kotaku when you're a gamer and have an internet connection.

  • Can't really remember, possibly a link from like insertcredit or something.
And I keep coming back because of the constant updates. And also pointing fish. He should have his own feature and graduate from that Maximum Risky stuff. He needs to cover more serious issues! (pun intended, sadly) :D

  • Was a reader of Gizmodo and checked out the other blogs and been an avid reader since.

  • A friend told me that he checks Kotaku everyday, and that I should check it out, been here ever since.

  • Honestly? From Fleshbot, I think.

  • After seeing "Kotaku Sucks" on a public toilet wall I was intrigued by this supposed proposition. On asking a gentleman by the name of Jeeves i was directed to your humble site.

Much to my surprise the site featured neither sucking or public toilets, but i stayed anyway.

  • Like many others have said already, I found the site through Penny Arcade.

  • I was trolling for information on the PS3, and this site came up frequently. That's right, I was trolling. I'm not proud of it.

  • G4... It used to be fun, you still are. Well, time to get back to spending all day watching "interactive" Cops and Cheaters. Maybe I will luck out and get a Morgan Minute in a few hours to remind me of the good old days when they actually were about gaming, and not just USA circa 1993.

  • Shit, lemme think. It was a while ago when you had to get an invite to sign up for comments or something. Ummm.... damn. I'm not 100% sure. Maybe a Penny Arcade link? Though that might have just been the point that I became a regular. I may have visited the site before then.

  • I used to read Google News, keyword Nintendo, and I found the site a couple times that way. Of course that's when I wanted nothing but the Nintendo Power perspective of gaming (over this now), so I didn't get into the site. I started reading the blog daily only last year when I started to break from my Nintendo fandom, probably after a enough redirections from sites like Penny-Arcade and from friends.

  • Thru the Giz (also how I ended up getting hooked on Lifehacker and Consumerist)

  • My mate was always one of those people in the know about games, and he showed me Kotaku. I have been on every day ever since!

  • Long time vicarious observer, long time gamer, so Kotaku was an easy "find" so to speak. Then about a year ago, I felt compelled to open my mouth/mind and post something. At some point I even made it into the "comment of the week" section. Now I'm no dv8godd, or Witzbold, but I have enjoyed getting involved here in the comments section.

Glad to be here, thanks to all the staff of Kotaku!

  • Kotaku lured me into the Darkside.....

  • I wanted a free PS3 back then, Found Kotaku when you guys had a free PS3 competition, kept reading and I was hooked.

  • This seems like as good a time as any to make my first post.

Someone on Gamefaqs posted a link to Kotaku having to do with the controversy between Kotaku and Sony. I checked out the site (guessing it was around April 2007) and have been coming here ever since.

On an unrelated note, with a little work I think Crecente could pass himself off as Borat.
